On May 22, 2004, a powerful tornado developed in southeast Nebraska near the town of Daykin. The tornado grew to mammoth proportions: at its largest, the tornado path was measured at 2.5 miles in diameter. On the ground for over two hours and 52 miles, it hit the small hamlet of Hallam near dark (~8:39 pm). This is my view of that storm.

On May 18, 2025, a breathtaking EF3 tornado roared just miles from Arnett, Oklahoma, narrowly sparing the town in one of the most dramatic near-misses ever captured. Filmed during a Moderate risk day in Western Oklahoma, this storm’s jaw-dropping structure is being called one of the BEST of all time by storm chasers.

It was 2.6 miles wide at its largest, had winds greater than 300 mph, and moved faster than 50 mph. In short, it was one of the most incredible tornadoes of all time.

A borderline EF5 tornado leaving Criner, Oklahoma on 5/24/11.
This one is definitely in the Top 5 of strongest tornadoes I've seen.
An intense tornado churns near Quitaque, TX on 3/28/07.
Officially rated EF2, it is clear that this tornado was capable of much greater damage.
It was part of a massive outbreak of tornadoes across the High Plains.

This one formed southwest of Mulvane, Kansas on 6/12/2004 (yes, that storm).
As you can tell, we were all a little excited!
I believe there were two big reasons:
-Slightly under-forecasted low-level shear
-Significantly under-forecasted instability

Key points:
- System is moving a little faster than expected
- As a result, Tuesday is "the day"
- Veered surface winds won't hurt shear
- Moisture is still questionable
- But tornadoes are a real possibility
Strong shear, questionable moisture/instability. Big storms possible!
The storm that produced the EF5 tornado that hit Greensburg, KS was the product of 4 storm splits. The original storm split 13 times!
Models may be useless in these scenarios, emphasizing the importance of observations.
This snaky tornado traversed the prairies of Osage County, OK on 5/1/2008 for 35 minutes. No ghosts were observed.

Owing to a navigational error, we'd missed the 1st tornado that day, which was long-lived and stout. Quite the bummer. But it offered a good lesson: don't reposition unless you have to!
This circulation formed just east of Tulia, TX on 5/7/19. Earlier, we'd abandoned storms near Amarillo, TX. They were becoming less isolated, so we knew we'd have a better shot at tornado near Tulia.
It was part of a significant outbreak of tornadoes in SW KS and CO. In all, almost 50 tornadoes formed that day.
Rated F3, it was one of five tornadoes produced by the storm. And even though the funnel was narrow, it tossed a 1967 Mustang Shelby approximately a quarter-mile.
We chased another storm near Watonga, but fortunately chose to drop S when we did. This storm produced another tornado, which was anticyclonic.
Turned out to be our only successful storm chase in a very slow year!
