To help the next generation, Beltrán decided to create a mentorship app
called Ask the Latina, which connects Latina professionals to Latina
students hoping to start careers in STEM and law. As Beltrán points out,
Latinas are underrepresented in those fields. “I felt like that needed to
change,” she says. And although Beltrán runs two thriving media and
marketing companies, she turned to Verizon Small Business Digital Ready to
gain valuable skills she needed to create the app.
A one-on-one session with a Verizon Small Business Digital Ready finance
expert helped Beltrán realize that launching the Ask the Latina app would
necessarily be different from her other ventures. Her businesses are
service-oriented, and after the finance session, Beltrán realized, “This
was a totally different area … I’m going in and developing a product this
time, not a service.” A financial structures course helped her create a new
business model for the app, and additional self-paced and live courses
helped her hone her social media strategy to target mentors and younger
mentees.
Beltrán found that Verizon Small Business Digital Ready offered new
learnings she could apply to all three of her current ventures. “It’s
actually great for anybody in any stage of their career, any stage of their
business, whether they’re startup or further down the line,” Beltrán says.
“[T]here’s something in there for no matter what stage you’re in."

“One thing that I enjoyed about the program was it really encouraged you to think strategically about your business—and holistically—so that you could actually work on your business and not be enmeshed in the running of it,” Webb says.
Webb says the Creating Financial Projections course on the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready platform helped her understand how to prepare for the sizable expenses associated with selling to a large company, and to anticipate how manufacturing, profit margins, and the time spent developing samples would impact her bottom line.
“Working through those numbers, I was really able to think through the
choices and the decisions I'd have to make in my business on a daily basis, which was incredibly helpful,” she says.
For Webb, who worked with Verizon Small Business Digital Ready experts both in group courses as well as 1:1 sessions, the human element is the true strength of the program. “The presenters were experts in their field and had a wealth of knowledge that they generously shared with all of us,” she says.
“People are the magic of the program,” she adds.

They produce storefront signs, vehicle lettering and banners as well as printed flyers, business cards, stationery, custom T-shirts, laser-engraved products and company uniforms. Today, Fisher Signs & Shirts has two locations and has grown to 12 employees, including current co-owner and business partner Jerry Smith.
Fisher first learned about Verizon Small Business Digital Ready through a partnership with the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce. The course offerings, he says, immediately resonated.
“I knew that social media marketing was really important for my business, but I didn't know where to go to learn it,” Fisher explains. “When I found Verizon Small Business Digital Ready, I saw courses that really spoke to me, that were titled [with] exactly the information I was missing.”
The Basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) taught Fisher that he might need to hire an outside vendor to help strategize for SEO. ""When I was meeting with potential vendors to offer that service to my business, I knew what to ask for, I knew what to look for,” Fisher says. “And I printed out the [Verizon] course guide, and had it right there as a resource.”
He also redesigned the company website and learned how to use free analytics tools from search engines and social media platforms. “It allows us to tailor our content to what’s working, what's impactful and what inspires people to reach out to us,” he says.
The results have been clear: “Since initiating SEO and the website revamp, we have seen a 25% increase in customers taking action by emailing or calling. Our web traffic is up 57% and we’ve passed one of our competitors in [search engine results] ranking,” Fisher says.

Tirado, who previously worked in a factory, said the idea to start a cake business came to her one day while she was cleaning. “I called my sister Karol [Laguna] and said, ‘Karol, do you want to make cakes?’” With help from Burgos, the sisters co-founded Paradise Cakes, initially working out of Laguna’s basement. Today, they sell a variety of desserts including tres leches, carrot cakes, and cheese and coconut flans in more than 40 stores in Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania.
“I thought that it was going to be small, but as the months went by, I said wait, this is going to be big,” Tirado says.
As demand grew for Paradise Cakes, Burgos decided to ramp up his business acumen to help the bakery reach its potential. He turned to Verizon Small Business Digital Ready, which he’d learned about through the Northeast Ohio Hispanic Center for Economic Development, and started taking the self-paced financial and marketing courses. Soon, Tirado did as well.
For two people who were busy creating desserts and cutting hair, the structure of the online courses was crucial. “We don’t have time to sit down for long classes,” says Burgos, who appreciated the concise but knowledge-packed Verizon Small Business Digital Ready offerings. “You can do it at your own pace. You can go back and check videos on things you’ve forgotten,” he says.
Tirado, who had managed her business’s invoices and expenses entirely with pen and paper, found the finance courses most helpful. She learned to take advantage of accounting software, to track profits and losses, to use a designated business account for all company finances, and to set aside funds for future expenses and investments. “If an emergency happens and a piece of equipment breaks down, then I have a place where I can get the money,” she explains.
Verizon Small Business Digital Ready also taught the pair new digital and social media marketing strategies. Tirado began posting photos and updates several times a day, and Paradise Cakes went from 300 to over 1,000 social media followers. Nito took advantage of search engine optimization and 5-star reviews to draw more customers, increasing business by 30%, he estimates.
“I’ve received a lot of help,” Burgos says of the Verizon courses. “The more you know, the more you can understand your business and be attentive to certain details.""
Nito and Zuleyka’s entrepreneurial spirit has rubbed off on their son, Michael, who is taking business courses at college while also working at Paradise Cakes. His future plans? Michael now wants to open his own gym and become an entrepreneur, too.

“It has built my confidence 100 percent,” Goode says.
Verizon Small Business Digital Ready is a free, online portal designed to help small business owners like Goode succeed in today’s digital world. The portal offers self-paced courses led by successful business owners, in addition to personalized coaching, networking and incentives such as grants to eligible businesses.
Before taking courses in the portal, Goode was doing everything by herself. And while her business was successful (she says she’s known for her mouthwatering breakfast platters), she often felt stressed. “I felt like this business was running me, not that I was running this business,” she says.
Now, with 10 courses and coaching sessions under her belt, Goode knows how to track her finances, write a business plan, attract corporate catering gigs, target social media influencers, and infuse search engine optimization (SEO) into her website redesign.
“[What I’ve learned in the program] made things smoother, less stressful,” she says.” I’m up earlier now. I’m promoting more now. I got a new assistant. I’m getting invoices faster, booking faster. My catering is already booked until 2022.”
Goode now feels empowered to take her business to the next level. Her five-year plan includes owning a commercial kitchen, doing corporate catering and hiring more employees. Most importantly, Goode wants to leave a legacy.
“In the beginning, [this business] was just to get my son through college,” Goode reflects. “But now I know that this is something that I can leave a legacy behind with. When I go, my children will have something to carry on. My family will have something to be proud of.”

Miles Park School is a PreK-8 school on the city’s southeast side. Many students’ families cannot afford internet access, says school principal Tamika Taylor-Ivory. When she arrived at Miles Park School eight years ago, there was little technology or digital learning. Teachers relied on textbooks and administered pencil-and-paper tests.
“I wanted our school building to be the feeder to the community,” adds Taylor-Ivory. “We educate the kids and provide them with the resources that are necessary to become 21st-century learners. The goal was that if we taught them those skills, they would go home or go into the community and be able to educate others.”

“The Aurelia app goes over the features of fish, including size and shape, discussing adaptation across three different ecosystems in the ocean,” says Roberto Padron, Verizon Innovative Learning Lab Mentor at Rubén Darío Middle School in Miami.
With their tablets in hand, Padron’s students wandered the classroom, enthusiastically exploring the deep-sea world they created through Aurelia. Unlike just reading in a textbook, these lessons jump off the screen, Padron says. “The Aurelia app has such depth to it, yet it’s simple. It just kind of constantly keeps catching their attention,” he says. “So for me, it’s just a win-win.”
His students agree. “It’s pretty fun,” says Gabriella Herrera. “So [the lesson] gets stuck in your mind, and you get smarter—but like, you're also having fun.”

Grace’s mom, Jenny Lester, is an administrative assistant for Big Sandy’s Lineman Training program. While Jenny was brainstorming ways to advertise the program, Grace piped up with a thought: Why not create a VR video, using those same 360-degree cameras she had access to during the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program? They could attach a camera to a lineman’s helmet and film him climbing a utility pole.
With the footage from the camera-mounted helmet in hand, Grace developed her video. “I stitched it together to create a VR experience of what it’s like to be a lineman,” she explains.
Grace’s innovative idea and practical application of next-gen technology is what the STEM-focused summer program is all about. “Grace is a prime example of how we’re trying to empower students with Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers,” says Jarred Gibson, program director at Big Sandy.

With devices, data plans, and technology received as part of Verizon Innovative Learning, the media club was transformed. “We got all this amazing equipment from Verizon,” Winzenried says. Using a green screen and a microphone, students create videos in the style of public service announcements but with middle school style and flair. In one video, spearheaded by students Jordan Williams and Pablo Vargas Urbina, a rapping middle schooler encourages his classmates to get vaccinated so they can come to school. “They were able to demystify vaccinations for the community,” says Julia Glees, Verizon Innovative Learning School Coach at Berendo.
The videos also allow for English language learners, who represent a sizable portion of students at the school, to practice speaking skills and use their creative talents, says Glees. Students that Glees previously had to usher to class now jump at participating in educational opportunities involving technology.
It’s clear that the Verizon-provided tech is making the difference. “I never made a video before, but when I saw that iPad with that mic in my hand, I felt like I was on top of the world—I really did,” says 7th grade student Anela Herrera.

The Verizon Innovative Learning Lab program is a multi-year initiative that integrates emerging technology, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and 3D printing, with a student-centered curriculum in a custom-designed lab. The Lab curriculum encourages students to adopt a design-thinking approach to problem-solving: to empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test (and often retest!) an innovative, multi-disciplinary and human-centric way to create deeper understanding, uncover insights and develop effective solutions to challenges.
Verizon Innovative Learning Labs, along with an associated curriculum developed in partnership with the J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovative Institute at Arizona State University, empower schools all over the country to become hubs of innovation. The Lab helps students reach the heights of their own creativity, says Seaman.

But the STEM enrichment program is more than just tech lessons: The students learn essential life skills, too. While credentialed teachers lead the tech classes, high school and college mentors guide the kids in exercises on self-identity, personal growth and character development.
At the STEM Achievers program at Cal State LA, mentor Ivan Martinez practiced mock interviews with rising eighth grader Angel Gutierrez and his classmates. “The lesson today, it forced me to contemplate the future,” said Gutierrez, who thinks he might like to work as a machine learning engineer—or an artificial intelligence engineer—when he’s older.
“We know that during adolescence students are really building their identities,” says Dr. Jessica Morales-Chicas, co-director of Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers at Cal State LA. “So it’s a really important time to be able to have them reflect on who they are: What do they value? What do they see themselves to be in the future?”

Dawson’s passion for continuous learning motivated her to complete eight micro-credentials in one year, thanks to online offerings through Digital Promise and Verizon Innovative Learning HQ. Micro-credentials are digital certifications that verify an individual’s competence in a specific skill or set of skills. These free professional development courses can then be applied in some states as continuing education credits (CECs) or units (CEUs), which are required to renew teaching licenses. “I find that the best teachers I’ve worked with, the best leaders I’ve worked with, never stopped learning and growing,” she says. “And that is crucial to me as I go through my career—to never stop.”
Dawson then incorporates all that she learns into her work as a coach. From one professional development course on Verizon Innovative Learning HQ, for example, she learned about leading through coaching. “Once I took that microcredential, I was able to infuse that into my professional development for my teachers,” Dawson says.

Today, that group has expanded to a full classroom of parents, who get to try out some of the same tools and programs their middle school children are discovering in the Verizon Innovative Learning Lab. These include a range of emerging technologies like augmented and virtual reality, 3D printing, artificial intelligence and robotics. These Labs are hubs of innovation that provide students – and the larger school community – with the opportunity to leverage technology, design thinking through project-based learning, and social innovation to design solutions to make a positive impact. “That enthusiasm for technology-based learning is contagious with the older generation,” says Campbell. “Here’s something their kids are learning and they do it and they get so excited.”
Students also have the chance to play professor at the sessions, and they relish the opportunity. “I like how I got to be the big one, and get to show people how to make stuff with their own ideas,” says Jazmyn Singleton, of teaching the adults Tinkercad, an online app used for 3D digital design.
