Тhe social spark present in Georgia at the dawn of the 20th century can be seen well in this song. It was likely recorded sometime between 1909 and 1914 - the pressing of double-sided records started in Tbilisi in 1909, while this recording is first seen in the 1914 Gramophone catalog. [Edit: according to the catalog compiled in 1996 by Alan Kelly, an English discographer, this song was recorded in July, 1910]
The song is based on lyrics by Hazira, a famous Georgian ashugh of the 19th and early 20th centuries who commonly touched social issues with his poetry. The singer is accompanied by tar. Another version of this song, with duduk trio accompaniment, also exists, recorded in 1909.
Lyrics:
It's about to dawn,
Worker, worker, rise up!
It's about to dawn,
Worker, worker, rise up!
A beautiful day will come for you,
Don't sleep,
Don't snore,
Don't sleep.
My wonderful you,
You, you - the rose of mine,
You, you - the worry mine,
You, you - the worry of mine.
The great darkness will leave you,
Worker, worker, rise up!
The great darkness will leave you,
Worker, worker, rise up!
Your work will also be appreciated,
Don't sleep,
Don't snore,
Don't sleep.
The robbery and oppression will be destroyed,
Worker, worker, rise up!
The robbery and oppression will be destroyed,
Worker, worker, rise up!
Mountains and lowlands will get equal.
Don't sleep,
Don't snore,
Don't sleep.
You, you - the rose of mine.
You, you - the worry of mine.
My wonderful you.
My wonderful you.
You, you - the rose of mine.
My wonderful you.
You, you - the worry of mine.
You, you - the worry of mine.

The Vocal Ensemble Of Kutaisi Industrial Enterprises dir. by N. Shengelia - Imeretian Humorous Song.
Although, in the late 60s, one song from this choir was included in "Georgia In Folk Song", the broadest compilation of the Georgian folk song up to that time, it is virtually impossible to find any info about this ensemble. Even the full name of N. Shengelia is an obscurity - so if anybody knows more about this choir, please, write in the comments. As for this recording, it was made in early 60s.

State-Merited Folk Song and Dance Ensemble - Shavlego.
State-Merited Folk Song and Dance Ensemble is the oldest Georgian folkloric formation еxisting today. It was founded in 1885, and after many generations and name changes, it has been called Erisioni since 1999. From 1958 to 1966, it was directed by Anzor Kavsadze, one more luminary from this famous family of folkloric singers. This recording of "Shavlego" (а centuries-old song dedicated to Shalva Alkhaltsikheli, a Christian martyr from the XII-XIII centuries) most likely belongs to the early 1960s.

In 1969, Dielo released their first batch of songs on an LP. It wasn't their debut album, though - rather it was a split release with Orera, ever-popular stalwarts of Georgian "vocal-instrumental band" music. This work, among other things, designed for export outside the USSR, features some of the best music in Dielo's discography, especially their first rendition of "Yvavilebis Qveyana (The Country Of Flowers) that clocks to almost 6 minutes. This Russian-language song was written by Aleksandr Averkin and V. Chistyakov.

Aisi (means "sunrise" in English), at least at that particular time, were a band fronted by a small female choir. Their only album, mostly composed of traditional songs and those written by Giorgi Tsabadze, presents beautiful vocal polyphony in pop context, fortified by jazz, funk and at moments, psychedelic arrangements.

Although 75's version is considered a classic, Aisi's hypnotic way of dealing with it is just as interesting.

History of recorded sound in Georgia starts right away with 20th century. Caucasus region attracted wide attention of world's leading record companies from the very start of 1900s. Starting in 1902 (although some indirect info states that first Georgian recordings might have happened a year earlier) Gramophone company undertook several large expeditions and recorded a huge number of Georgian folk songs; apart from this, they also made the wide musical documentation of extremely multicultural pre-Soviet Tbilisi. At the end of 00s, several smaller-scale sessions were also held by Pathé.
This book by Anzor Erkomaishvili and Vakhtang Rodonaia (project led by Carl Linich) researches the folkloric side of Georgia's musical inheritance amassed before World War 1. 99 traditional songs are organized onto 4 CDs, mostly containing recordings by choirs directed by Gigo Erkomaishvili, Samuel Chavleishvili, Ia Kargareteli, Levan Asabashvili (Dedas Levana), Apolon Tsamtsishvili, Sandro Kavsadze, Mikheil Kavsadze and a one from Kutaisi with the director unknown.
While this work is not the complete almanac of early Georgian folk recordings and Gramophone expeditions for some reason overlooked the traditional music from many parts of the country, it still remains the most comprehensive document on earliest recorded Georgian folklore done so far. 4 hours of music on discs that complement the book could create a festival for all who appreciate Georgian folk music.
The book contains many essential details (lyrics in Georgian and English, musical description, bios, photos) for the listener. Hard to find - but if you ever come across, remember that it is one the most valuable books ever dedicated to Georgian music.

You just cannot confuse the sound of Chabuka Amiranashvili's plaintive sax with anything else. In almost all Georgian pop records of 90s and 00s (many of which he himself produced) that feature saxophone, it is he who is playing. Having had a rich experience in jazz (collaboration with Keith Tippett in the early 90s is perhaps one of the highlights), he subsequently gravitated towards ethnic music, where he also developed a signature semi-electronic sound that were could be used both dancing halls and traditional dances. This album presents something that is right in-between his two sources of inspiration, with light, airy jazz (think of Jan Garbarek in the 90s) put head to head with ethnic-sounding, beautiful melodies.
To clarify, the world "colored" was apparently used with the meaning of "colorful".

Kartlos Kasradze (1926-2005) was one of Georgia's best-known comic performers. Having started his career during WW2, his performances were alreadly in great demand by mid-50s. One of the most iconic characters he had created was the one of Beno, father of three, an explosive tomato seller, often taunted by students loitering near his booth. These series of sketches were so popular that some of these were released on a couple of local Georgian 78rpms - an extremely rare feat for spoken-word performances at that time.

Unknown Performer - Nikita-jan, Your Cards Have Messed Up.
This lo-fi recording seems to be important because it is one of very rare examples of direct, unreserved Georgian political protest song. The rant is directed against Nikita Khrushchev and echoes the tragic Tbilisi events of 1956 when a demonstration (by itself a very rare occurrence in Soviet Union) against his heavy-handed De-Stalinisation policy was fired at by the soldiers and dispersed with tanks, killing at least 22. Other aspects of Khrushchev's failed politics are also mentioned, with the Soviet leader compared to a log, probably as an euphemism for something worse. This illegal picture record doesn't seem to be one-off: a photo of at least one more copy is located at www.x-rayaudio.com - a wonderful website that deals with this whole "music on the bones" phenomenon.
Lyrics in English:
Nikita-jan, your cards have messed up.
Jugashvili's curtains are all around you.
You dressed me in blacks, made me eat black bread,
You messed this country up and you're gonna regret it.
You dressed me in blacks, made me eat black bread,
You messed this country up and you're gonna regret it.
You've walked abroad quite much.
You're cruising, yet you're giving us wounds.
You've started a war against Stalin and Mao -
A log like you shouldn't be standing beside them.
You've started a war against Stalin and Mao -
A log like you shouldn't be standing beside them.
Envy of Jugashvili was your demise.
His guy's have messed your things up again.
When you gave our guys a massacre,
Did you really think you would get away with it?
When you gave docents a massacre,
Did you really think you would get away with it?
Nebo SSSR is yet another project featuring Kote Kalandadze, whose music in the last two decades has covered pretty much everything from hip-hop to metal. Here he and his bandmates, Bulya, Alex and Dima, explore Russian-language, grunge-influenced alternative rock that refers back to late-80s Soviet underground as much as it does to Nirvana. In the mid-2000s, this group was at the peak of popularity, with several of their songs and videos getting quite a bit of airplay and TV time. This album was their second, after the debut, a very limited-edition release.
Although the band hasn't been among Georgia's rock music mainstream for some time already, it is far from being split-up, keeping low profile but still recording sporadically.

Although Bakur Burduli's music might not be as challenging and intense as works by Lado, his older brother, the songs he writes have this unmistakable hopefulness and beautifully life-affirming quality. This album is essentially a compilation of song he's recorded from mid 1990s to early 2000s, hence the stylistic versatility. Most of the music here is centered on britpop and alternative rock, but surprising folkloric touches and sweeping balladry makes a number of songs stand out. All in all, this belongs to one of the better releases from Georgian "cassette boom" period that was in effect somewhere from 1999 to 2006.

Elene Pachulia-Chubabria joined women chonguri player's ensemble directed by Akvsenti Megrelidze in 1933. Soon she became the star performer, helping out multiple bands and choirs, also providing soundtrack to several movies. Called "Queen Of Georgian Folklore" by Anzor Erkomaishvili, she was very active to mid 1950s.
These two songs were recorded at the wake of the ensemble's success at Georgian Art Decade in Moscow in 1937. They were pressed in Leningrad at least twice: first in 1937 (second label at 0:16) and then repressed a year after as a B side of "duplex" (experimental 78 rpm format featuring two songs per side), with A side featuring Keto Japaridze's Georgian performances.
A funny note: on the 1937 label, Russian is spelled as Sab-Disho. Missing "O" is actually provided by hole on the record. Ingenious, isn't it?

Keto Japaridze is rightfully stands as something of a legend among Russian romance performers. She was first noticed in early 1920s by Zakaria Paliashvili. Then she went to Berlin for three years to study singing and upon returning back in early 30s, she took big Russian cities by storm. That said, she also recorded a few Georgian songs, two of which are presented on this 78 rpm disc, pressed by Experimental Phonographic Factory in Leningrad.
This record was pressed on an unusual, "duplex" format, which featured not one, but two songs per side. Two songs by Keto Japaridze occupy side A. Side B of the record features a women chonguri player's ensemble featuring Elene Pachulia-Chubabria and directed by Akvsenti Megrelidze.
Music by Giorgi Chubinishvili, lyrics by Vazha-Pshavela.

The word "Genatsvale" doesn't have the exact English translation. Literally, it means "let me take your place [in suffering]", but it is instead used as interjection as a sign of endearment. This is a cover of Neapolitan original, made popular by Vano Sarajishvili at the turn of the century. Georgian lyrics to this song were written by Ioseb Grishashvili, a famous poet who coincidentally also later married Keto Japaridze.
From late 50s to the 80s, Giuli Chokheli was one of the foremost jazz singers in Soviet Union, drawing large crowds anywhere she held a concert and frequenting many festivals abroad. Seven years after her debut LP and on the wave of her international success, she released her second self-titled work in 1971. On some songs, she is again accompanied by "Changi", instrumental jazz band led by Boris Richkov, her husband, while others feature variety orchestra backing. Song selections are versatile, featuring Georgian, Russian and English (covering Dusty Springfield). While the album is centered mostly on light grooves and beautiful ballads, it is closed out by dramatic Monologue Of Electra.

In seventies and eighties guitar-accompanied trio singing became something of a trademark format for Georgian acoustic music. Simebi might not have been the most popular among these bands, but they definitely stood out for good. Hailing from Samtredia and associated with its timber factory, their style had a very interesting twist: they instilled definite Western vibes to this classic Georgian format so far as some music writers started to even call their music "Georgian country". Plus, in contrast to most other unplugged formations, Simebi were songwriters themselves with excellent melodic sense and a knack for bright, dynamic arrangements. In 1990 they released their only LP, which is very poorly recorded, full with clipping and sound distortion (how did one manage to do this in the professional studio dealing with just two acoustic guitars and 3 voices?) that mars many brilliant songs there. Fortunately, two songs from that LP were also recorded for this small 4-song "minion" in 1983. These circumstances make this short record very important for the timeline of great Georgian music.
P.S. Not to be confused with "Simi", later Georgian acoustic trio

This is the live radio recording of "Qari", one of 75's most complex jazz-rock / fusion songs that opens their 1981 studio work. A rougher cut, it was most likely recorded just before the arrival of Beso Kalandadze, their trademark singer who performs this song on the album. Either Nugzar Ergemlidze or Roma Rtskhiladze must be handling the vocals here.
Based on Konstantine Gamsakhurdia's novel of the same name and considered one of Taktakishvili's main operatic works by Georgian music historians, the three-act "The Abduction Of The Moon" has inexplicably never been published. Like his first opera, "Mindia", this work is also based on Georgian folklore, but in this case music of Samegrelo region comes to the forefront, with some direct melodic citations by the composer.
Although I'm far from sure, the present recording seems to be made in 1978, featuring Tsisana Tatishvili (as Tamar), Nodar Andguladze (as Arzakan), Eldar Getsadze (as Tarash), Irakli Shushania (as Kats Zvambaia), Tengiz Mushkudiani and others. The Choir of the Tbilisi State Opera and Orchestra was conducted by Givi Azmaiparashvili.
When asked once what kind of music they played, Zumba guys answered: "we play everything except techno". That might have sounded a bit overambitious or inaccurate, but listening to this, the debut album of theirs, the listener can understand what they exactly meant. This bunch of songs cover a myriad of styles and approaches: it all starts of with a reggae, then goes to feature some rapping, then inoffensive pop rock, and suddenly some blues and fusion appears. But one thing that is constant throughout is the airiness and sense of goodwill. Zumba followed this album up only after 5 years, but established a very productive career in 2000s, with same stylistic wealth and emotional brightness.
