Taiwan’s Legislature is expected to vote as early as this Friday on a special defense budget aimed at strengthening the immediate combat capabilities of Taiwan’s armed forces. Vice President Hsiao says the matter is urgent.
The opposition KMT, however, says it wants to hand unmanned systems policy over to the Economic Ministry rather than the Defense Ministry. Hsiao says she believes national security should not be a partisan issue.
“Security and science are not partisan issues,” the vice president says, “and should not be used as tools for political competition.”
“The better Taiwan’s drone industry performs, the better off everyone will be.”
The Cabinet approved the legislation in June. If passed, total funding of up to NT$210 billion (US$6.7 billion) would be allocated for the purchase of coastal surveillance drones, coastal attack drones, and USVs.
