America's national identity is built around a kind of constant anxiety about government tyranny. But over the past fifty years, giant corporations have used that anxiety as a propaganda tool, stirring up public fears about "big government" to gut social programs, roll back labor protections, and destroy the environment -- thanks in part to the help of corporate propagandists like Dennis Prager and Ben Shapiro.
Noam Chomsky calls this "government is the enemy" idea "anti-politics," and it's become one of the most dominant forces in American media. But anti-politics isn't actually about fighting tyranny or protecting individual liberty -- it's about making sure democracy doesn't get in the way of corporate power. There's only one way to stop the world's billionaires from become actual tyrants -- a powerful, democratically elected government that fights on behalf of all of us.
Don't fall for corporate propaganda. Fight hard and stick together.

Is there anything more American... than freedom?

Build Back Better, the Green New Deal, Medicare-for-All -- anytime there's an idea to invest money in the working class, the same question gets asked: "but how will you pay for it?"
This constant fear mongering about the debt isn't an accident -- it's the result of a massive propaganda campaign by a right-wing billionaire who very badly wants to avoid paying his fair share of taxes.
So how do you answer a question that isn't being asked in good faith? How do you win in a rigged game? Some times, the only winning move is not to play.

"Critical Race Theory," "groomers," "Great Replacement" -- we are living in a time of incredible stupidity. A time when very little of what's happening in politics feels connected to what's happening in people's every day lives.
That's not by accident. Fascist movements intentionally work to turn politics into a spectacle of pointless revenge and resentment, and they succeed because they're usually backed by wealthy elites who have an interest in keeping people from working together.
Using Charlie Kirk's "Americafest" conference as a case study, this video tries to break down how "head empty" fascism works, and what we might be able to do about it.

The right-wing panic over Critical Race Theory is nothing new. It's part of a long history of race-based moral panics that billionaires use to turn vulnerable people against each other.
Thankfully, there's a way to break the cycle.

"On this earth there are pestilences and there are victims, and it's up to us, so far as possible, not to join forces with the pestilences. That may sound simple to the point of childishness; I can't judge if it's simple, but I know it's true." - Albert Camus, The Plague

It's hard to imagine defunding the police when we're constantly being bombarded with images of violent crime. But the reality is that the police aren't nearly as useful at fighting crime as they appear on TV. The media's obsession with "good guys" and "bad guys" makes for good entertainment, but it's causing us to cling to violent and counter-productive strategies for dealing with crime. The sooner we let go of our obsession with the police, the sooner we can start imagining better, more ethical alternatives. We just need to be brave enough to start.
CORRECTION: At 8:04, I described Bayley as the author of "Police And Society" -- that was a screwup on my part. He's the author of "The Limits Of Police Reform," which was published IN Police And Society. Sorry for the late-night mix-up!
In a normal country, being forced to stay home because of the coronavirus would be a frustrating inconvenience. But in America, it's creating a humanitarian disaster, as millions of people struggle to pay for their basic needs while being unable to work.
This isn't a universal problem -- it's a unique feature of American neoliberalism, which has spent decades wrecking the social safety net and is now demanding that workers put themselves at risk of becoming sick in order to pay their bills.
A lot of the media coverage around Bernie Sanders’ and Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaigns has focused on whether the candidates are “too far left” to win a general election. But that focus isn’t a reflection of political realities -- policies like Medicare-for-All, the Green New Deal, and free college are widely popular. The panic over candidates being "too far left" is actually a reflection of the media's class bias, and a corporate media ecosystem that’s naturally hostile to candidates that try to imagine a better world for the working class.
