NOPE. The project that was originally described to me, which I agreed to participate in, is NOT what ended up airing. National Geographic is obviously not about representing things in a realistic manner. If they are not going to represent me in a realistic manner, knowing what was filmed and submitted to national geographic as compared to what ended up in the episode, what about all of the other reports, commentary, documentaries that are produced from Nat Geo? What is their excuse for this? I was grossly misrepresented. Knowing what was filmed and what ended up in the episode, it really appears as if they went out of their way to stigmatize this subject and I have to wonder why? Just because they could? Or was it simply a lazy half ass 'let's finish off the last season of Taboo with whatever footage is laying around' kind of situation, where the editor 'made it up' as he went (and the end result was so bad it comes across the way it does)?The following is the letter I sent to the production company after I was asked about what I thought of the episode which premiered August 19th: Honestly?I feel misrepresented. I do not have orgasms when I pop balloons. I felt they represented looners as being sick. Dave is not a good representation of the average male looner, popper or non popper. The looner community is very unhappy for the most part. I feel this episode only serves to promotesexual stigmatization and marginalization. With all the footage that could have presented healthy people enjoying healthy adult play- instead they focused on the subject the way they did? Even the music sounded as if Freddy Kruger was under Dave's bed and would be coming out to claw all of his balloons to death (because after all, he is just a freak right?). It's a shame that a really awesome and interesting subject gets chewed to bits and treated in a disingenuous manner, and by nat geo which I had assumed was interested in accurate reporting at least to some degree.A LOT of people were hoping to be treated with some measure of respect and dignity (myself included) and I am bummed that what could have been a really fun and interesting episode turned out to be the typical stigmatized display. I feel even more bummed that I contributed to it.Too taboo for taboo is right! (btw, I was told that this is a joke around the offices of the production company. They KNOW that it's bull but they have their lips puckered!)Nat geo should stick to reporting about death and war and disease.As the sexual healer featured in the first segment stated, this is a sexually sick world. It isn't because people are kinky, it isn't because people like to hump balloons, it isn't because people like to suck on feet or pretend they are puppies, the world is sexually sick because humans keep wanting to avoidaddressing sexuality in an honest and real manner. I decided to try to inflate a chinese balloon (40" I believe), to see if I could do it by the time the second break before the third period was ended. The nipple was really giving me trouble!! It didn't happen. The REAL bummer, is that I filmed (or thought I had) a b2p after the game that was so LOUD!!! Turned out we had not filmed it!!! That is only the beginning of my torment. This was after I had accidentally popped another balloon during the game that was so loud the entire audience at Pepsi stadium went SILENT. Pepsi stadium was almost to 75% capacity. We were not filming. However, the game was being filmed for television so I am going to try to get it. I know that pop will be on there, perhaps even reactions from anyone being filmed at the time. It was truly a strange moment doing a b2p with thousands of people reacting. Woe. It was intense for me, and very LOUD. It was totally unintentional but one of those things (knowing balloons) that certainly is always a possibility! ;-). My intention was to have fun blowing them up, and once the game was over to do a b2p to experience the acoustics of the huge stadium. I do these 'experiments' for many reasons. Most of the time it is pretty mellow even light-hearted. The fact that there were so many people, and the fact that the place had major amplification made this a very unique scenario. There were plenty of nonstop LOUD noises as you can hear in the video. I am not engaging the sexual aspect of my balloon fetish EVER in situations such as this. Which might confuse some of the more 'linear' thinking looners. Human beings often do not connect even though you might be sitting right next to one another at a sporting event for example, or in an elevator. I am that person who will look you in the eye and say hello. In this case I blow up a balloon. I have sparked many conversations and interactions with strangers through the balloons. Depending on the situation it can get really interesting! After the event on the way home, we were discussing the situation, and I thought about all the different implications. I thought about people who live in war zones and wondered if a balloon pop would make them jump or not. This led me to wonder about how vets might react to balloons popping or fireworks for that matter. I ponder many things after I do a public scenario. And no, I will not be doing this in an airport anytime soon.
