JCCC Innovates: Classroom Technology in the Healthcare Simulation Center JCCCvideo 2022-09-22 | Johnson County Community College offers healthcare students — including those in the nursing program — unique learning experiences with its a strong focus on classroom technologies and healthcare simulation. From the tools used in the classroom to the student’s many hands-on experiences, innovation is at the core of the Nursing program’s contributions to student success. In the on-campus Zamierowski Family Center for Healthcare Simulation Center, students work independently as registered nurses where they practice critical thinking and decision making in simulated healthcare situations. Simulation technology includes the use of life-like manikins (with voices and reactions provided by faculty located in a central control room), IV pumps and actual hospital sounds. These give students an enhanced, realistic learning experience that enriches classroom curriculum. Audiovisual technologies allow instant replays and post-experience debriefings, which gives faculty an opportunity to provide a better critical assessment of the simulation. In addition, the Clinical Augmented Reality and Virtual Experiences Room (CARVER) uses twelve projectors to create a 360-degree environment that serves students in a variety of medical fields and better prepares them for the real world. JCCC Innovates: Supported Education Programs JCCCvideo 2022-09-22 | One way Johnson County Community College achieves its mission to inspire learning to transform lives and strengthen communities is through its supported education programs: College Learning Experiences, Activities and Resources (CLEAR) and CONNECT. These two innovative programs provide strong support for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.CLEAR Saturday provides life enrichment activities; CLEAR Expansion, a college-based, post-high school program, assists with the transition from high school to adulthood; and CONNECT, an immersive transition program, helps engage its students in the college experience on the JCCC campus. JCCC Innovates: Mental Health Support JCCCvideo 2022-09-22 | Mental health is a priority at Johnson County Community College. Through several student-focused surveys, JCCC identified student needs related to depression and anxiety. As a result, our Counselors use a holistic approach to support students through education planning, career decisions and personal issues to ensure they feel valued and cared for. Counselors use a tool called Early Alert that provides students with greater needs faster access to Counselors. The Counseling Center includes a specially designed Calm Room, where students in crisis can relax and regroup. A mental health clinician is on site to take immediate referrals when needed. And students across campus enjoy mental-health related events and information for suicide awareness week, eating disorders week, and much more, as programmed by a mental health outreach committee. JCCC Innovates: Sustainability JCCCvideo 2022-09-22 | Johnson County Community College has made sustainability a top priority, and these efforts are evident across campus. Sustainability projects include integrating LED lighting into campus buildings; completing a solar feasibility study that resulted in the installation of solar panels on campus rooftops; creating a composting system that manages food waste and composts campus paper towels; developing a bird-strike study that led to window modifications that reduced on-campus bird fatalities caused by window strikes by half; establishing Open Petal Farm where students practice sustainable agriculture; and developing sustainability modules for use in a variety of courses — not just classes with sustainability as their main focus. The JCCC Center for Sustainability has also partnered with the JCCC Arts Education Program and the Midwest Trust Center to empower young students to realize that they can actively help change the future. All of these efforts were organized and led by the JCCC Center for Sustainability and have provided JCCC students advanced learning opportunities on a more sustainable campus — and helped them maintain hope for a better future. JCCC Innovates: Student Basic Needs Center / Microtransit JCCCvideo 2022-09-22 | The Student Basic Needs Center at Johnson County Community College supports students who are facing hardships as well as at-risk students who are in emergency situations. Designed as a safe and caring place, the Center provides a variety of support, as well as financial literacy classes and workshops. It offers food and school supplies to students who need them; manages an equipment loan program that enables students to borrow laptops, hotspots and other technologies; and gives personalized assistance to students who need help accessing housing, transportation and social services. Supported by food and monetary donations, the Center also manages the Student Emergency Assistance fund, which helps students with unpaid housing or utility bills, unexpected medical expenses or other financial needs.Additionally, JCCC has partnered with Kansas City Area Transportation Authority to develop a micro transit program that provides transportation to students who need a ride to campus. JCCC Innovates: Student Agency JCCCvideo 2022-09-22 | The Johnson County Community College Student Agency provides creative services to small businesses in the community. Staffed by advanced JCCC students, the agency gives its students real-world knowledge and experience related to the career programs they are studying — experiences they may not otherwise get from their classes. In the agency, students meet with clients to understand their needs and are responsible for completing any projects. Since its founding, the Student Agency has built websites, supported video production projects, completed brand identity and logo designs, worked on social media campaigns and provided statistical analysis to area businesses. Students have also worked with cross-functional teams on independent projects, such as the Kansas Comsos App which brought together students and faculty from Web Development, Graphic Design and Astronomy to develop an educational platform to help people understand the solar system. JCCC Innovates: Continuing Education & Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding JCCCvideo 2022-09-22 | Johnson County Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education (CE) branch responded to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on community businesses. They partnered with organizations across the county to form a strike team to help decide how to use CARES Act funds, and, as a result, created JoCo Works, a partnership among Johnson County Community College, Johnson County Workforce Partnership and University of Kansas Continuing Education. Together they distributed $5 million to the community to help those who were unemployed or underemployed, and to assist businesses as they recover and, when needed, retool during the pandemic.Similarly JCCC was able to share part of their Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) monies with the Continuing Education branch to assist students, which freed up CARES funds for other uses. Recently, JCCC has partnered with NCircle and the Johnson County Department of Corrections to provide training and life skills for people who are coming out of incarceration. NCircle works with JCCC to build programs based on the skills employers need, and to purchase supplies students might need to complete their training. This partnership has served more than 120 students who have earned more than 250 different certificates and certifications.
