Don & Juan - Chicken Necks Mod Zeb 2016-05-02 | One of the classier tunes on the UK Mod and R&B scenes at the moment.New York duo Don and Juan recorded this Scene club classic in 1962 as the flip to their ballad " What's your name" on Big Top. It received a release on UK London American and sold next to nothing despite huge popularity in the early Mod clubs.
Hank Jacobs- Gonzo. Scene Club Ham Yard Mod Zeb 2015-03-24 | Hank's take on the James Booker classic from 1960. Original from his ultra rare US only Sue lp. This song championed by Guy Stevens at the Scene Club 63/64.
Hollywood Argles- Sho know a lot about love Mod Zeb 2015-03-24 | The flip to "Alley Oop" and got its fair share of plays at the Scene. Later covered by the Dave Davani Four on Decca to great effect due to it's popularity on the early Mod scene.
Garnell Cooper & the Kinfolks -Long Distance Scene Club Ham Yard Mod Zeb 2015-03-24 | The flip to "Green Monkey" on London American from 1963. A track evocative of the Scene allnighters.
Nat Kendrick & The Swans - Dish Rag pt 1 Scene Club Ham Yard Mod Zeb 2015-03-22 | One of the biggest tunes at the Scene Club in Ham Yard ,London. A classic Mod dancer ,originally released on UK Top Rank and failed to chart. Impossibly rare on British release and features a certain James Brown on keyboards on one of his earliest recordings. He'd later rework this for his "Mash Potatoes USA".
Jimmy James & the Vagabonds - Two For One Mod Zeb 2014-10-11 | Classic Mod Soul Ska from Jimmy and the boys from 1964. Two iconic Mod albums ,"Ska-Time" from 1964 and "The New Religion" from 1966. Both firmly on the pulse of what was happening in the clubs at the time. Jimmy would later find chart success with 70's dico but no where near the perfection of his 60's sides. An absolute floorfiller at the Scene Club ,heres "Two forOne"
Richie Barrett - TRICKY DICKY Mod Zeb 2014-09-22 | Always a favourite of mine even though the flip to the oft covered and much better known "Some Other Guy". Oozes Mod cool and namedrops (amazingly ! ) two very old and dear friends of mine ,Sally Black from Belfast and Lucy Brown of Broxburn ,Scotland. This ones for you ladies. Tough to source on London Atlantic from 1962.
The Action - Girl ( Why you wanna make me blue ? ) Mod Zeb 2014-09-09 | Very rare demo version of the Temptations classic. Previously unreleased. Recorded in 1966 with view as a track for thier never-to-be album. Raw in it's current form it's lacking the production value of George Martin and A.I.R studios full sound. A staple track of the bands live set. From recently discovered unreleased demo tape.
The Vibrations - Daddy Woo-Woo Mod Zeb 2014-09-08 | 1964 Mod stomper from 1964. Actually the flip to the original version of "My Girl Sloopy" later recorded by the McCoys. This trumps the A side for me , which was a live recording. Tough to get on U.K press , this U.S re-issue will suffice for now. The band later went on to record the better known "Cause your Mine" , a bona-fide stomper of the Northern Soul scene.
Mighty Sam - Fannie Mae Mod Zeb 2014-09-08 | Stonkin' Mod club R&B from 1966. Mighty Sam ( McClaine) cover of the 1959 Buster Brown track. Adding more than a little Soul and raising the tempo this little gem filled many Mod dancefloors in the mid-1960's and well worthy of re-discovery
Jimmy James & the Vagabonds - Two For One Mod Zeb 2014-09-05 | One of the most popular live draws of the 1960's Mod scene , their classic original line up inspired many classic Soul and Ska sides. The 1964 "Ska-Time" album reflecting the popular club Ska sound with the early Mods , from which this superb instrumental is taken. 1966's "New Religion" ,produced by Pete Meaden and easily the 1960's most iconic true Mod album. A final 1968 lp before finding chart success and widespread fame in the mid-70's. An infectious tune , by one of my favourite 60's bands. Regularly packed out the Birdcage Mod club in Portsmouth manys a night.
Harvey Fuqua - ( Dance) Anyway you wanta Mod Zeb 2014-08-26 | Actually a B-side on US Tri -Phi records , Detroit. Harvey Fuqua ,formally lead vocalist with DooWop outfit :the Moonglows. Released in 1964 ,it's enjoyed success on Mod dancefloors for over 50 years. With it's R&B meets Latin via Billy Stewart feel it works for me. I first heard this in Belfast's mid 80's Mod club ,Richardson's, when this was championed by well known Belfast D.J David "Homer" Holmes. A bona-fide Mod classic ,rarely played out nowadays ,what with the current scene preferring the "Acrobatic Soul" of rare Northern. This oozes class and was so cool to dance to.
The End - Introspection Mod Zeb 2014-07-30 | Recent find of Bill Wyman produced UK Pyschedelia. Lying somewhere between The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" & "Ogdens". Super sound. They originally started off as a Soul orientated band before moving into a more Progressive sound. Stand outs for me are " Cardboard Watch" and " Shades of Orange" ( probably better known as a Moon's Train instrumental. Mint lp, Mint sleeve. Open to offers !! lol
Tony Allen - Stick Around Mod Zeb 2014-07-27 | A lovely slice of UK Mod Soul never officially released but included in the T.V series "Primeval". This is the longer version with the hammond break. Always a favourite of mine back in the day when I looked liked this and actually enjoyed it.
Martin Raynor & The Secrets - Youre a Wonderful One Mod Zeb 2014-07-27 | Classy UK cover of the Marvin Gaye classic from 1965. The flip to yet another cover of Eddie Holland's "Candy to Me" ( also so good I'll post at a later stage). Lead singer Clifford T.Ward later achieved solo success in the 70's.
The Dee Jays - InCrowd Hangout Mod Zeb 2014-07-27 | I thought the title sounded rather good so I took a chance on this Swedish release on SWEDISC from 1966. Nice little slice of Euro freakbeat ,flip is "Please Don't Critiscise" ( so don't!....) . I know nothing about the band other than they were very popular in Sweden , then Abba came along and knackered their prospects of world superstardom ! It also could be subtitled "Rolfie the Beatles Man) a hairdresser whose shop must've been one hell of a cool place to be.
Small Faces -1st DEMO HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ME Mod Zeb 2014-07-20 | Picked this L.P up recently in a Charity shop , albeit minus the cover. It's basically a 1972 re-issue of their 1967 " From the beginning album and on listening ,the tracks are the same ,though suffering from bad sound production. I can only assume its a bootleg. But the strange thing is and it stands out so well is the version of " ( Tell me) Have you ever seen me", I know there were two versions recorded , one for Decca and one for the Immediate album. None sound like this mix so one can only assume its the first demo
Jill & The YVerns - (My) Soulful Dress Mod Zeb 2014-01-07 | ( My) "Soulful Dress" is a cover of the Sugar Pie DeSanto track on a rare OAK Label demo. Backed with another soulful cover , Doris Troys ,"I'll Do Anything". Could find nothing on the internet about the group but well worth the 50p I spent today in Cancer Research charity shop this morning. A wee ounce rough even after cleaning but well worth posting , even for rarity value. I'll post the flip soon.
Little Billy Dean - Tic Toc Mod Zeb 2013-12-20 | Australian singer Little Billy Dean released this one off cover of the Scots of St James classic on the Miki Dallon Strike label in the UK in June 1967. Actually a b-side it most certainly lacks both the punch and drive of the original.
Jackson & Smith - Party 66 Mod Zeb 2013-12-19 | "Earworm" -a song that gets into your head that you find yourself humming or sing it all day be it at work , in bed ,or just about doing anything. This is one of those tunes for me....On UK Polydor from 1966 , Jackson and Smith with "Party 66" , a Brit-Soul homage to the Nightlife /Club scene prevalent at the time. Namechecking everyone from the Kinks to The Four Tops ,to the Stones to the Birds. Often touted as the fist recording of late Sixties Club stalwarts Root and Jenny Jackson, I'm not so sure. Difficult to find any info on this duo but a fine song on UK demo. Any info appreciated
Terry Reid ( with Peter Jay & the JayWalkers) Mod Zeb 2013-12-16 | " This Time" . 1967. The b-side to " The Hand don't fit the Glove" from Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers ( featuring Terry Reid). A classic slice of mid sixties British Soul with Terry Reid giving Marriot a run for his money. This is the guy who was first choice for lead vocalist for Led Zeppelin over Robert Plant. Pysch / Freakbeat fans would love his later cuts such as " Tinker Taylor" and "Superlungs". A massive floorfiller on the UK Mod scene albeit a little too short.
Diane Ferrez & Nicky Scott. - Me And You Mod Zeb 2012-10-23 | Swish little slice of UK Rythym & Soul from early 1966 0n UK Columbia. Session singers Diane Ferrez and Nicky Scott paired up by Yardbirds manager Simon Napier Bell in an attempt at breaking the charts. First of three singles ,and easily the best ,the others balladic and dull , Diane Ferrez would go on to join the Ferris Wheel and belt out some well known UK Soul shouters. Lovely Columbia demo , and a sound that would be emulated by Rythym & Soul band Makin' Time in the 1980's.
THE LOCATION - Im Looking For A Saxophonist C/U Mod Zeb 2012-10-23 | A Northern Irish band from Londonderry who recorded this rather nifty cover of the Artwoods instrumental in 1967. I know nothing of them other than they regularly played the province with a big Soul sound in the 1960's. From acetate. Produced by Phil Coulter.
TERRY & JERRY - MAMA JULIE Mod Zeb 2012-10-19 | Another from the guff box....I think this would do ok played out if it's not already. The nice UK London based " R&B" label..Terry and Jerry with " Mama Julie". This is actually the flip side and I prefer it to the A. I'll assume from the Class USA label credit these guys were yanks and this licenced to the small UK label. Doubbt they'd any chance of a hit with this but would do ok nowadays with the Mod / Soul / R&B crowd.
HOAGY BENSON - KANGEROO Mod Zeb 2012-10-19 | I know nothing of the artist or the song but a colourful 45 from 1967 on a rare UK label. A soul-ish / R&B song. This was in a large box of records given to me recently. Kinda grows on me after a while. UK CBM 1967
TONY BROOK - OOH POO DAH DOO Mod Zeb 2012-10-17 | A lovely little rarity this from a local boot sale . Don't know much about Tony Brook ,other than this Demo 45 came in a picture sleeve ,with Press sheet. Mis-titled on the front , backed with the Brothers ( Uncreditied on sleeve). I recognised the cover version of the Jessie Hill / Ike & Tina/ High Numbers Mod classic. A great version. On Columbia from 1964.
Spooner Oldham - Two In The Morning Mod Zeb 2012-09-17 | One of my personal favourites from my old Mod days...Spooner Oldham ,an American session pianist and producer , with " Two in thee Morning" on U.S Chess. An absolute gem never recieving a U.K issue other than inclusion on a budget Pye compilation "Rythym & Blues" in 1967. Championed by DJ David " Homer" Holmes in the Richardsons Mod club in Belfast ,86/87, the best the city had to offer at that time.This is where I first heard this and nearly requested this every Sat night.......Still love it. A cool tune.
Lee Drummond - Baby I know Mod Zeb 2012-09-17 | A classic mid sixties B- side on UK Page One. Popular on both the Mod and Soul scenes ,this Reg Presley ( of the Troggs) penned gem by UK R&B / Soul singer Lee Drummond. I can tell you nothing about Lee Drummond ,so info appreciated.
The Nocturnes -Night-Owl & Hay ! Thats What Horses Eat Mod Zeb 2012-08-28 | Manchester big Soul band of the mid 1960's ,notable for having future New Seekers vocalist Lyn Paul in their ranks. "Night-owl" and it's proposed b-side "Hay ! That's what Horses eat" was shelved by Parlophone in 1966 , lord know's why, had it been released it would have been one of the more collectable singles of the Mod scene with it's club-wise lyrics and groove. A couple of flops, ill advised recordings such as " Why( am I treated so bad) and "Fairground Man" saw their late 60's output produced by Tim Rice. A continental single " Da Doo Ron Ron " and "Carpet Man" betrayed their Soul roots. A great shame, a great band live apparently. The photo is from 1968 and not in line with the groove of 1966 but it was the only decent pic I could source.
Episode Six - Fortune Teller Mod Zeb 2012-08-28 | Rare 1966 outake from future Deep Purple stawarts Episode Six. A clutch of lame singles denied them and real success. Had they released this cover of the Benny Spellman gem ,it could have prove a minor hit ,but a little dated for 1966 tastes ,hence the move into twee Psychedelia..
Riot Squad - Everythings Gonna be alright Mod Zeb 2012-08-28 | The everychanging Riot Squad, with an unstable line up throughout their career ,and one of the most unique bands of the 60's ( Each member could play at least three instruments !) delivering such a different sound to most of the other bands of the period. Flirting with Soul, Jazz and R&B and combining this with their Joe Meek produced sound delivered such fresh sounding tunes. Yet success eluded them despite brieifly having one David Bowie and future Hendrix drummer ,Mitch Mitchell in thier ranks. Lead singer Graham Bonney had a sizable hit in 1966 with "Supergirl" . Here is an unreleased demo from 1965 of the Willie Mitchell classic " Everthing is gonna be alright"
DAVE DAVANI FOUR - BOOTLEG Mod Zeb 2012-08-27 | 300TH UPLOAD ! So wanted something really cool....Rare studio outake from 1965 of the 1964 Booker T and the Mg's riginal Mod dancefloor filler. Husband and wife team ,the Davani's ( Dave ,bottom righ in picture) knocked out some super Hammond workouts between 1963 and 1971 ,before Dave retired from the recordin scene alltogether to work in session work and producing. Check out the super-rare "Fused" lp ,now re-issued on C.D.
Josh Hanna - Shut Your Mouth Mod Zeb 2012-08-26 | Recent find by UK singer-songwriter Josh Hanna as the flip of his 1966 Decca release. I know nothing of this guy ,other than it's a rogue-ish little slice of UK R&B that'd do ok at many a Mod night.
Felders Orioles - BackStreet Mod Zeb 2012-05-28 | On UK Picadilly from 1966 ,Felder's Orioles cover of Edwin Starr's club hit from the same year. London based R&B / Soul sextet Felder's Orioles covered lots of club hits of the time including Down Home Girl ,Something you got and this gem. They included future Timebox member Ollie Hallsall on drums.
The Persuasions - La La La La La Mod Zeb 2012-05-17 | Uk Columbia from 1966. Know little of these guys except they recorded this rather Mod cover of the Blendells classic and also a cover of " I'll Go Crazy". Rough little demo copy but worthy of inclusion on my channel.
THE BUNCH - You Cant Do This Mod Zeb 2012-05-17 | On Dutch CBS from August of 1967 comes the rather super Bunch with the flip of their 3rd single. You can't do this is a great slice of blue eyed soul and is currently filling Mod dancefloors across the UK. Rumoured to be the remants of the group Bunch of Five who released a few non-starters in 64/65. I think they are a British group, dunno but info appreciated. My tune of the week......
Samantha Jones - Go Ahead Mod Zeb 2012-05-17 | UK female singer Samantha Jones had a few non-starter hit in the mid to late sixties but her version of "Surrounded by a Ray of Sunshine" on Utd Artists did find favour in Northern Soul circles. Now this little oddity I recently picked up confounds me , from 1968 on a Dutch Ford cars promo disc , know nothing about it , was it a theme to an advertisement for a car or what ? ,anyhow a lovely bit of Mod Soul girly pop produced by Mark Wirtz of "Teenage Opera" fame. Any info appreciated.
JUNCO PARTNERS - AS LONG AS I HAVE YOU Mod Zeb 2012-05-02 | Newcastle band the Junco Partners cover of the Garnet Mimms soul classic. UK Columbia 1965. Typical of the 1965 beat sound , and a flipside to boot. They played the Cluba Go-Go in Newcastle when the Animals vacated their residencey.
GARY WALKER AND THE RAIN - FRANCIS Mod Zeb 2012-05-02 | One third of the Walker Brothers , Gary teamed up with Leeds band the Rain and released 3 singles on Phillips , including " Come in.." from 1969 which included this fantastic flip. "Francis" is an amazing slice of sixties songwriting and sounds like it was recorded 3 years earlier with it's freakbeat thunder. A big noise of the UK Mod /Sixties scene and recorded to great effect by the wonderful Embrooks a few years back.
THE UNIT - Would you believe what I say Mod Zeb 2012-02-28 | The flip to their 1967 single on Fontna " Love take a little understanding". Big in the flower Mod scene " Would you believe what I say" has been filling out floor at Mod /Sixties nights for the last 20 years or so. Know little of the band other than they were the remnants of Unit 4 plus 2 of " Concrete and Clay" fame ,a big hit in 1964.
O HARAS PLAYBOYS - BLUE DOG Mod Zeb 2012-02-28 | On UK Fontana from 1968 ,comes the flip to their " Voices" single. " Blue Dog" is a wonderful soulful dancer with its trippy lyrics, I just love it. The band hailed from Mancester I think and had a single out called " The Ballad of the soon Departed" , other than that I lknow little of them. I would most definatly play this out at a Mod night if it ain'y being done so already. D.J's take note.
GORGY PHAME - RARE AND UNRELEASED Mod Zeb 2012-02-27 | Following on from my last upload of unreleased tracks from Mod God Georgie Fame comes this second trilogy of tracks unforgivably ommitted from the recent " Mod Classics" cd release by Ace subsidery BGP. These 3 ,the previous upload of rare tracks ,and " All about my girl" ," Bend a little" " I'm in love with you" plus a slew of tracks from his 1st 2 lps and E.P's should warrant a Volume 2. Compiler Dean Rudland ,take note.Give the people what they want. "Money ( that's what I want) " Green Onions" and " J.A Blues" .
Rockin Berries - Pain Mod Zeb 2012-02-22 | Quite a popular sixties pop band around 64 and 65 with hits on Piccadilly with covers of American hits like " Poor Mans Son" and " He's in Town". Not very Mod but when the hits dried up in 66 and with a change of label to UK Pye came this gem from 1968. " Pain" saw a complete change in direction , a stray from the falsetto hamonies and most certainly a harder edge ,almost freakbeat ,hence its current popularity on the Mod / Sixties scene. UK Blue label Pye 1968.
Enoughs Enough - Please Remember Mod Zeb 2012-02-21 | Very rare label that took my curiousity and so I bought it blind. Coulda been folk or jazz but it's a rather cool soulful beat number with a little tinge of pysch. Know nothing of band or label but hear for collectors point of view. On UK Tatoo from 1968.
Pattersons People - Deadly Nightshade Mod Zeb 2012-02-03 | The flip to the 1966 track on Mercury by Pattersons People. More info when I research it. A blinding slice of UK Freakbeat.
OSSIE LAYNE - Come Back Mod Zeb 2012-02-03 | I think this is the original version of the rather better known Edwick Rumbold track. I'll probably be proved wrong. On the rare R&B label from 1966 ,I can only assume this was a UK based Soul singer and I'd take a stab he was coloured at the moniker ? I know nothing about this artist other than the song is a cracker Mod dancer just shy of freakbeat.
THE SENATE - I Cant Stop Mod Zeb 2012-01-31 | What 3.99 buys you on ebay nowadays. Took a chance on this one , solely on the Ben.E.King connection. Could'nt tell you a thing about the band other than it has a Moddy soulful beat and was issued in 1966. I'll assume from theCloumbia label they were a UK band. Any info appreciated.
Tangerine Peel - Solid Gold Mountain Mod Zeb 2012-01-31 | Heres one for me oul mate Jonny Hamilton , this would be his bag nowadays and is big on the "flowery" Mod scene in London.Tangerine Peel was best known during the second half of the 1960s as a five-man psychedelic band, specializing in a slightly light but pleasant brand of the music. Their principal claim to fame was the presence of future songwriter/producer Mike Chapman in their ranks during the late '60s, when they cut records such as their version of the Bee Gees' "Every Christian Lion-Hearted Man Will Show You," cut for British United Artists in 1967. Subsequent singles included "Solid Gold Mountain" and "Talking to No One" for British CBS, and "Never Say Never Again" and "Play Me a Sad Song and I'll Dance" for British MGM. Chapman left before the group recorded its one and only LP, Soft Delights, in 1970. By that time, the group had abandoned its psychedelic influences in favor of a more conventional pop/rock sound.
PETE KLINT QUARTET - SHAKE Mod Zeb 2012-01-27 | Know nothing of the band other than this rather snazz cover of the Sam Cooke classic was tucked away on the flip of their sole UK 45 from 1967.
M.U.5 - Mrs Watson Mod Zeb 2012-01-27 | On UK Crystal ,as a flip-side from 1972 come this rather blatent early Bowie soundalike. This sounds like its been released 6 years two late and is currently big on the English Mod scene due to its inclusion on the sometimes horrid Le Beat Bespoke cd's. A great tune if out of my preferred time zone.
