This flight represents not only the first international hybrid-electric flight ever conducted, but also the furthest north a hybrid-electric aircraft has ever flown.
Ampaire was initially funded under ARPA-E’s CIRCUITS program to develop a testbed aircraft that other ARPA-E projects could use to deploy and test their technologies at high altitude in actual flight environments. Their “Electric EEL” aircraft allows ARPA-E teams to test several different high-impact technologies, including power distribution systems, high-power electronics, inverters, motors, propellers, ducted fans, batteries, fuel cells, and high-efficiency combustion engines either directly or as a generator.
Ampaire received additional funding through ARPA-E’s SCALEUP program, allowing the company to further develop its electrified propulsion technology which may ultimately lead to certification and commercialization. This technology could save up to 50% on fuel and emissions (up to 90% emissions reduction with SAF), and 25% on operating costs.
This flight is truly a tremendous achievement highlighting Ampaire’s innovation and significant persistence along with our dedication to support their efforts.ARPA-E Energy Innovation Showcase on the HillARPA-E2023-08-25 | On July 18, 2023, Chairman Brandon Williams of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee’s Subcommittee on Energy, Bipartisan Policy Center, and ClearPath hosted the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Showcase on the Hill in the Rayburn House Office Building.

Scaling up a start-up or small business presents multiple challenges. This is particularly true when commercializing hard engineering technologies due to the investment required to demonstrate cost and performance at commercial scale sufficient to address market adoptions risks. Through the SCALEUP program, first launched in 2019, ARPA-E has endeavored to help address these challenges and accelerate deployment of promising technologies previously funded by ARPA-E. In this panel you will hear from leaders of a few of the companies from the SCALEUP 2019 and 2021 cohorts. They will describe some of the key technical, commercial, and team development challenges they have confronted – and continue to confront – in their scale-up journey and how they are addressing them.

For more information on the ARPA-E Summit, visit arpae-summit.comStarted from the Garage, Now Were Here: Next Generation Power Electronics from OpcondysARPA-E2023-03-23 | Co-founded by the husband-and-wife team of Dr. Stephen and Kristin Sampayan using equipment accumulated in their garage over lifetimes dedicated to electrical and mechanical engineering respectively, Opcondys was built to enable the next generation of power electronics. Their device - known as the Optical Transconductance Varistor, or OTV - could fundamentally change how power is switched across the U.S. electrical grid and enable greater penetration of renewable energy sources.
----
Opcondys will develop a high-voltage power converter design for energy storage systems connected directly to the power grid. Opcondys' converter design will use a modified switched multiplier topology that will allow connection to utility transmission lines without intervening step-up transformers. It uses a photonic, wide bandgap power switching device called the Optical Transconductance Varistor. This is a fast, high-voltage, bidirectional device which reduces the number of circuit elements required for charging and discharging the storage element. By operating at 100 kHz it is possible to increase efficiency to 99% compared to 95-98% efficiency of traditional converters. The system also reduces the size of the passive elements by 50% and, because of the optical control, mitigates electromagnetic interference issues. The elimination of step-up transformers further reduces system size, and can enable a lower cost than existing systems. If successful, project developments could open the door to increased integration of grid-level energy storage.Going All In on Methane Emissions: Gas Mapping LiDAR with Bridger PhotonicsARPA-E2023-03-23 | Through the ARPA-E MONITOR and SCALEUP programs, Bridger Photonics, Inc. (Bridger) has developed the next generation of methane leak detection and quantification, Gas Mapping LiDAR™ (GML). This innovative technology is transformational to the environmental effects of oil and gas production, transmission, and distribution, scanning oil and gas infrastructure to detect, locate, and quantify methane leaks throughout the entire natural gas value chain. Bridger uses a proprietary laser sensor that is attached to the underside of an aircraft to scan hundreds of oil and gas sites a day, streamlining the methane mitigation process with the most sensitive aerial leak detection and repair technology available.
Through ARPA-E funding, Bridger has been able to (1) fully automate job planning, data processing and management tools, (2) finalize second-generation hardware designs with improved sensitivity and accuracy and scale manufacturing, (3) advance predictive algorithm capabilities, and (4) begin to integrate its technology into customer operations.A Future for Fusion: Realta Fusions Magnetic BottleARPA-E2023-03-23 | Realta Fusion - a company spun out from an ARPA-E-funded project at the University of Wisconsin - will develop a fusion energy technology that confines plasma using high-powered magnets to create and sustain a fusion reaction.
In this video, you will learn more about Realta Fusion's innovative approach from experts in the field, including ARPA-E Program Director Dr. Ahmed Diallo, Realta Fusion CEO Kieran Furlong, and University of Wisconsin professor & Realta Fusion CTO, Dr. Cary Forest.
The University of Wisconsin/Realta Fusion project will leverage advances in the stability and confinement of the mirror fusion concept, innovative plasma heating, and high-field superconducting magnets to demonstrate a potentially transformative development path toward a low-cost linear fusion device. Two mirror coils will be constructed using high temperature superconducting material. Hot and high-density target plasmas will be created using high‑frequency electron-cyclotron heating from modern gyrotrons. Fast, sloshing ions will be created and energized by a novel radio-frequency heating scenario in which neutral beam injection is used to fuel ions, which are then accelerated in situ to high energy by high harmonic fast waves. The project aims to demonstrate a novel “end cell” that confines stable, heated plasmas at the end of 24 months. If successful, the plan is to demonstrate electron temperatures exceeding 1 keV and a fusion triple product in the end cell exceeding 10^18 keV s/m3. Success in this project could justify pursuit of the low-capex HTS Axisymmetric Magnetic Mirror Reactor (HAMMiR), which would use two of the end cells at either end of a longer central mirror cell to pursue breakeven conditions and generate thermal energy. An El Dorado of Clean Energy: Millimeter Wave Geothermal Drilling with Quaise EnergyARPA-E2023-03-22 | Quaise Energy is leveraging a high power source originally intended for fusion energy - the gyrotron - for advanced geothermal drilling applications. Quaise's millimeter wave drilling rig would essentially vaporize ultrahard rock down to previously unexplored depths to tap into "an El Dorado of clean energy".
-----
Quaise Energy will overcome technical limitations to deep geothermal drilling by replacing mechanical methods with a Millimeter Wave (MMW) directed energy technology to melt and vaporize rocks for removal. This approach could increase drilling speed by 10 times or more, reducing costs while reaching higher temperatures and greater depths than those achievable with the best current and proposed mechanical technologies. Project R&D will include benchtop testing as well as larger scale demonstrations of directed MMW drilling at unprecedented borehole lengths and power levels. A detailed modeling and simulations campaign carried out with the experimental work will provide the basis for the design of larger, commercial-scale systems.Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm Invites Energy Innovators to 2023 ARPA-E Energy Innovation SummitARPA-E2023-02-01 | The Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) will host its thirteenth annual ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit from March 22-24, 2023, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
