There are 12 numbers retired in Jazz history. But even with his impact on and off the court in Utah, the former Jazz star does not believe his No. 45 jersey deserves to be hanging in the rafters retired at Vivint Arena.

Welcome back to Athelete District. Daniel Ricciardo acknowledges it was “not the ideal circumstance” having to continue with McLaren after learning of his exit, but he was determined to show his “fighting spirit”. After months of speculation, McLaren and Ricciardo announced back in August that this past season would be his last with the Woking team, the two having agreed to part ways two years into his three-year deal.
That announcement came as Formula 1 returned from its summer break meaning Ricciardo still had nine races left with the team knowing full well he was leaving. And it wasn’t because he wanted to, it was because the previous 18 months had been a struggle in which the partnership had failed to live up to expectations.

Welcome back to Rory McIlroy CALLED Cam Smith BEGGING Him To Stay On PGA Tour..trict. Cameron Smith has revealed how Rory McIlroy phoned him just days after he won the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews, urging him to remain on the PGA Tour instead of jumping ship to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour, according to an interview with Sydney Morning Herald. Smith, 29, had been heavily linked with a move to LIV Golf all summer, and the rumor intensified further when the Australian was asked about it all just minutes after etching his name on the famous Claret Jug this July.
Cameron Smith is hopeful his enhanced pulling power can secure a LIV Golf event for his native Queensland. The world No.3 and Open winner will aim for a third Australian PGA Championship this weekend at the event's new Brisbane home at Royal Queensland. Smith returns for the first time in three years as a force in the sport thanks to a season that included a controversial defection to the Saudi-backed rebel tour that remains at loggerheads with the PGA.

Welcome back to Athlete District. Cameron Smith holds the winning trophy while posing with runner up Peter Uihlein, far left, and third place finisher Dustin Johnson after the final round of the Invitational Chicago LIV Golf tournament at Rich Harvest Farms. Open champion Cameron Smith has won his first LIV Golf trophy and $4million in prize money in just his second start in the competition. The Australian, who left the PGA Tour for the controversial Saudi-backed tournament after becoming number two in the world - the highest-ranked player to join, closed with a three-under 69 for a three-shot victory at the Chicago Invitational.
The 29-year-old was briefly threatened in the third and final round at Rich Harvest Farms but he restored his lead with a birdie on the 17th to ensure neither Dustin Johnson nor Peter Uihlein could catch him. The Americans tied for second after each made birdie on the par-5 18th hole. Johnson finished with 70 while his compatriot Uihlein finished with 69 - both earning $1,812,500 from the 20-million-dollar purse. Johnson is the only player from the 48-man field to have finished in the top 10 at every LIV Golf event and he remains one of the most significant players to sign up. The next LIV Golf event is in three weeks in Bangkok. As well as Smith and Johnson, the Saudi-backed rebel tour has attracted Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.

Welcome back to Athlete District. Woods has not played since missing the cut at the 150th Open Championship as he waved an emotional goodbye to St Andrews after missing the cut in what was likely to be his swansong at the Old Course. The 15-time major champion continues to recover from the high-speed single vehicle crash in February 2021 that almost left him unable to walk. Woods required emergency surgery after suffering multiple leg breaks amid serious doubts he would never swing a club competitively again.
But he made a remarkable return at the Masters in April, making the cut at Augusta National despite visible levels of discomfort. But he was forced to withdraw in the third round of the PGA Championship and was a shadow of his best as he limped around St Andrews. The 82-time PGA Tour winner plummeted to a career low 1,206th in the Official World Golf Rankings in October after dropping over 600 places during an inactive year.

Welcome back to Athlete District. LIV Golf star Patrick Reed has claimed that his DP World Tour login credentials 'haven't worked for two weeks' as golf's ongoing civil war rumbles on. Reed made the controversial switch to LIV earlier this summer and has played in four of the series' five events this year, but the DP World Tour has since confirmed his login is working as normal. Most recently the American teed it up in Chicago alongside his fellow LIV Golf defectors finishing in a tie for 12th, after shooting five-under-par for the tournament across three rounds. In the team event though, Reed and his 4 Aces teammates once again came out on top as they won their fourth successive tournament.
Reed's 12th-placed finish saw him collect £291,000 in the individual event which means he trousered a cool £941,000 for his efforts in Chicago. Following his celebrations at Rich Harvest Farms, the former Masters champion addressed the media and revealed the ongoing saga with the DP World Tour and PGA Tour had taken a new turn. Reed revealed to GOLF.com's Sean Zak that his login details for the DP World Tour had been down amid the recent tensions between the tour and LIV golfers. He said: "It [the credentials] hasn't worked for two weeks, which is interesting. It worked a month ago." This comes after the 32-year-old made a return to the Wentworth-based circuit just one week prior, finishing in a tie for fifth in the tour's flagship event - the BMW PGA Championship. Whilst out competing in Surrey, Reed and his fellow defectors were slammed by both Rory McIlroy and Billy Horschel for making a contentious return to the DP World Tour. In related news, LIV Golf rebel Patrick Reed has described the treatment he has received from the DP World Tour since making the Saudi switch as a 'slap in the face'. Reed made the move to LIV earlier this summer and has competed in four of the series' five events, winning £5.4million in the process. Reed - alongside the rest of his fellow defectors - has received plenty of criticism, especially when he and 17 other LIV golfers made a contentious return to the DP World Tour this month to compete at the BMW PGA Championship.

Welcome back to Athlete District. There’s the potential that Alex Noren isn’t even aware of what he “accomplished” on Sunday at the CJ Cup. An even-par 71 to close things out at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, S.C., left the 40-year-old Swede in a ho-hum tie for 37th place, earning him a respectable if unremarkable $46,830. However, Noren’s payday in his 137th career PGA Tour start allowed him to become the latest member of a discomfiting club. Added to the $9,982,706 he had made previously, Noren passed the $10 million mark in tour earnings but became the 13th player to reach the milestone without having won a tournament on tour.
Looking at the PGA Tour’s career money list to determine the relative success of a player’s career is mostly a futile endeavor. Sure, Tiger Woods at No. 1 with $120-plus million makes sense, but Jack Nicklaus with $5,734,031—which ranks him a mere 326th all time—does not. The clearest evidence at how skewed prize money has become in the modern era is this simple statistic: There are 13 golfers who have earned $10 million or more in their PGA Tour careers without ever winning a tour event. To put that in perspective, Ben Crenshaw (19 wins, two majors) earned a little more than $3 million in his career. Lee Trevino (29 wins, six majors) about $6.5 million. Johnny Miller (25 wins, two majors) around $7 million.

Welcome back to Athlete District. The fate of Greg Norman In the last 48 hours, Greg Norman's name has been bouncing around all over the media. But not, as usual, because of some statement he made or some new frontal attack he suffered. This time the topic is his possible resignation. The Telegraph also proposes the name of his replacement, Mark King, former CEO of TaylorMade. King met Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Saudi Public Investment Fund that supports the circuit. During the season, he attended several LIV Golf events, and last September he said he believes the new Tour will find its place in the pro golf ecosystem within five years.
The PGA Tour is trying to gain supremacy over the golf scene with Norman and the rest of the squad trying to fight the competition, but they know they have a tough task ahead of them in order to accomplish this goal. In spite of this, the fact that they have huge amounts of money, given that the tournament is financed by Saudi Arabia, already gives them an advantage over their competitors. There was a rumor circulating a few days ago that Greg Norman would no longer be the CEO of LIV Golf, however, the rumor was quickly denied by that very company. "Greg Norman is our CEO and Commissioner. Any suggestion that changes are being made to Greg's title or role is patently false," LIV Golf managing director Majed Al-Sorour said in a statement to Sports Illustrated. In related news, LIV Golf’s Australian arrival “is official with confirmation of a tournament” to be held in Adelaide in April 2023, according to Jacob Polychronis of FOX SPORTS AUSTRALIA. Adelaide won the race to host LIV Golf’s Australian debut, “edging out Sydney and Brisbane, which were previously rumoured as the frontrunners.” Grange Golf Club will host the event on April 21-23 and is a “part of a four-year deal.” The tournament will be part of the core 14-event schedule in next year’s LIV Golf league. The prize money for the event will be about $25M (all figures US) with the winner taking home about $4M. LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman said that he hopes his home nation "can play a big role for LIV Golf as part of a multi-year commitment.”

Welcome back to Athlete District. Rory McIlroy has once again spoken in favor of a peace talk between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. LIV Golf’s inaugural season came to an end amid strong noise. The newly-introduced Saudi-backed league concluded despite legal and verbal fights with the PGA Tour. Following this, Irish golfer and PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy has now come out to state that the two tours must entertain a “compromise” for the “sake of our sport”.
McIlroy, who has been strongly critical of LIV Golf ever since its inception, has now called for resolving the rift between the two organizations. Speaking to the Italian publication, Golf & Turismo, this week, McIlroy said: "I believe there is no more time to waste... PGA Tour and LIV will have to find a compromise and speak for the sake of our sport… I don't know when this can happen, certainly not tomorrow, but of course, we will have to find an agreement.” Rory McIlroy, who seems to have softened his stance in the golf civil war, stated that the two tours could co-exist. The world number one even cited examples from soccer and said it was possible for the two organizations to exist in the same sporting ecosystem. In related news, Rory McIlroy regained the world number one ranking on Sunday — 10 years after he first rose to the top — with a one-stroke victory in the US PGA Tour’s CJ Cup. Three late birdies helped the Northern Ireland star hold off American Kurt Kitayama and return to the top of the rankings for the ninth time, and for the first time since his most recent spell, there ended in July of 2020. He supplanted American Scottie Scheffler, who finished tied for 45th to see his 30-week stint at the summit end.

Welcome back to Athlete District. It’s every average golfer’s dream to take on a PGA Tour pro in a round of golf. There’s so much to learn from playing against the best — their swing, their mental acuity, or the way they navigate their way around the golf course. So what was most interesting for former NFL first-round pick and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel? Manziel, who now travels in some of Arizona’s biggest and best playing circles, has had the opportunity to tee it up with two of the area’s best PGA Tour pros: Jon Rahm and Tony Finau.
He even played with both of them in the same week. And what he learned from teeing it up with the two of them he says can’t be replicated by any other golf lesson. “I got to play with Rahm and Finau in the same week, one at Silverleaf and one at Scottsdale National. And of all the guys I’ve played with, those guys are on just such a different level,” Manziel told hosts, Colt Knost, and Drew Stoltz. According to Manziel, Finau was the most enjoyable playing partner, largely because the former QB got to ride shotgun with him throughout his round. “Tony was the most fun just to go sit, and I rode with him throughout the day,” he said. “To watch that all the way is mesmerizing. His swing is so sick. It’s so tight and compact and effortless, almost.” “He’s one of the greats. I truly enjoyed being around him. What a solid dude.” In related news, Ryan Fox and Viktor Hovland will tee it up alongside Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Jon Rahm at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai from November 17-20th, the final Rolex Series event of the 2022 season. Joining world No 1 Rory McIlroy and US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick in the field, Fox and Hovland remain within touching distance of McIlroy, who has led the DP World Tour Rankings in partnership with Rolex since July, as the four-time Major Champion bids to win both season-long competitions on the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR in the same year for the first time in his career. The former University of Texas star who turned pro after wrapping up his college career by helping the Longhorns with the NCAA team title, had a brutal three-putt on the final hole of regulation on Monday. But he regrouped to make it through a playoff and earn a Thursday tee time.

Welcome back to Athlete District. It’s a question many have asked themselves: could I run quick enough to lead the London Marathon from the gun? Richard Lee-Wright decided to answer that question with an emphatic ‘yes’ on Sunday, sprinting off at the start to the delight of those watching. As the pre-race favourites settled into their early rhythm, the runner from Devon was seen tearing away behind the official race vehicle. Once he realised he was clear of the field, he began punching the air – making good on his promise to friends some six years earlier.
An amateur runner from Devon made national headlines at the London Marathon. It comes after he fulfilled a six-year pledge by speeding past the elite runners to lead Sunday's race in the early stages. After Women's Euro 2022 heroes Leah Williamson, Jill Scott and Ellen White sounded the horn to get the mass start underway, one man in particular was keen to grab five seconds of fame. Richard Lee-Wright from Uffculme, set off at a searing pace, sprinting ahead of the elite runners to briefly lead. Wearing a blue vest, black shorts and eye-catching yellow socks pulled up to his knees, Lee-Wright lapped up the moment as he raised his arm in celebration to the crowd. He could then be seen punching the air as he made it to the front and briefly led the race. He was soon caught of course, but not before taking centre stage on the TV cameras in Blackheath.

Welcome back to Athlete District. Maybe you’ve seen Alan’s beard. It’s a nod to his other life, as a rugged northern California outdoorsman. He’s camping with his four children, and his cellphone is either lost, off or both. If he’s lucky, he didn’t even hear Phil’s recent comment, at a LIV Golf event in Saudi Arabia. Mickelson said on Thursday that he never “did an interview” with Shipnuck. And that post-election call Donald Trump made to the Georgia secretary of state, looking for 11,780 votes, was a “perfect” call. Yes, this all relates to Mickelson’s description of the Saudis as “scary motherfuckers” and other comments Mickelson made to Shipnuck during a phone call last November, the ones that shook the golf world when they were released a couple of months later. Shipnuck, by way, never said their conversation was an interview either. He treated it as Mickelson venting for public consumption, and that’s how he used it.
Phil Mickelson and three other golfers asked to be dismissed as plaintiffs in LIV Golf's federal antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour, according to a notice of voluntary dismissal filed Tuesday. Talor Gooch, Ian Poulter and Hudson Swafford also asked to no longer be plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit, which accuses the PGA Tour of illegally suspending them for playing in LIV Golf events and using its monopoly power to squash competition. Mickelson, a six-time major champion, told reporters at the LIV Golf event outside Chicago two weeks ago that he was considering removing himself from the lawsuit. He reiterated that stance following today's proceedings.

Welcome back to Athlete District. By the time Team Trump reached the 10th tee, the acolytes were waiting in line. “That swing looks like another four years!” bellowed one as Donald carried the water with a decent drive. “You think Biden could do that?” asked the 45th president of the United States. “He wouldn’t even reach the [ladies’] tee.” Neither could Eric Trump, who topped his shot into an alligator-infested pond. The War on Drugs blared out in the background, secret service agents patrolled the fairways. We really are experiencing the wildest and weirdest of golfing times.
Trump said the PGA Tour is making a “big mistake” by not finding a way to co-exist with LIV and chief executive officer Greg Norman. “The Tour mishandled it so badly. The people at the top … something should happen with them. They mishandled it so badly. They not only had an advantage, they were dealing with very good people [Saudi investors] with unlimited money. “They’re good people with unlimited money. Welcome back to Athlete District. Phil Mickelson continued to blast the PGA Tour on Thursday by saying that the Tour is “trending downwards” and that he believes he’ll be on the “winning side” with how the professional game is set to evolve. Though he made incendiary comments about both the Tour and the Saudis earlier this year that threatened to torpedo the upstart league, Mickelson ultimately made the move to LIV Golf and has been arguably its most high-profile advocate. LIV has claimed 12 of the top 50 players in the world – Mickelson is down to 138th – as it winds down its inaugural season. The full league concept is set to begin in early 2023. Phil Mickelson rocked up at LIV Golf Jeddah where he was awkwardly asked to clarify his comments about his bosses being "scary motherf******". As you would expect, Lefty battered away the question fairly swiftly, claiming that he never did an interview with the author who published his comments that led to his brief exile from the golf world. "I find that my experience with everybody associated with LIV Golf has been nothing but incredibly positive and I have the utmost respect for everybody that I've been involved with," Mickelson said.

Welcome back to Athlete District. On Sunday, Patrick Cantlay missed a birdie putt on 18 that would have seen him shoot a course record 59 at the PGA Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas.
A day later, Cantlay, the world No.4 and someone who has won seven times since 2019, had a triple bogey on 18 to let an eighth victory slip through his fingers. Australian Jason Day finished eighth, shooting an eight-under final round to soar up the Leaderboard and finish at 18-under. Records tumbled in Tiger Woods’ wake when the prodigious amateur turned professional in 1996 in one of the most breakneck accelerations to the summit that golf has ever seen.
So when, 26 years on, a 20-year-old is matching the early feats of the 15-time major winner, it’s probably worth taking notice. Kim “Tom” Joo-hyung accelerated his meteoric rise with victory at the Shriners Children’s Open on Sunday, becoming the first golfer since Woods to win twice on the PGA Tour before turning 21. The duo are the only players to achieve the feat since the Second World War, according to ESPN Stats and Info. The South Korean carded an unblemished 24-under 260 to secure a three-shot triumph over Patrick Cantlay in Las Vegas, making him just the third player since 1974 to win a stroke play event without making a single bogey.

Welcome back to Athlete District. Here’s some news for you about Phil Mickelson. It is no secret that Xander Schauffele and Phil Mickelson share a special relationship with one another. Mickelson is one of Xander’s mentors, friends, and practice partners. So obviously, when the fight between PGA Tour and Mickelson got worse, so did Xander’s tension. It is true, that this is a tough choice for Xander. However difficult it may seem, Xander did choose his stand from the middle of the ongoing fire.
Xander Schauffele is one of those golfers who have had good relations with both LIV rebel, Phil Mickelson and the PGA Tour. The Tour is important for Schauffele’s career. Whereas, Mickelson is someone who helped him shape his career. So clearly the choice Xander was posed with was not an easy one to make. Apart from this, the pro golfer’s views were also widely expected by the general public considering his closeness to both the conflicting parties. Phil Mickelson is unable to play in the new era of the PGA Tour, mentioned Xander. Phil Mickelson is one of the most well-known golfers of our time. His skill is unmatched by probably anyone in this generation. So obviously, when he defected to LIV Golf, it made heads turn. Phil Mickelson explained the reason for his move by saying, “This new path is a fresh start, one that is exciting for me at this stage of my career and is clearly transformative, not just for myself, but ideally for the game and my peers. I would like to think that I have given back as well but now I am excited about this new opportunity.” In related news, The move of Phil Mickelson to LIV Golf has been received with a lot of heat since the news was made public. Moreover, the golfer has passed a lot of unsettling comments about the PGA Tour. However, the American Tour had changed in their way of work since the exit of Phil. A PGA Tour pro recently disclosed his feelings about Mickelson missing out on the latest changes in the 92-year-old Tour.

Welcome back to Athlete District. Today on the channel we are going to check out Ryder Cup status for LIV Golf players divides European teams + other related news. For Rory McIlroy, it’s a flat-out “no.” U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is open to having LIV Golf players on Europe’s team at next year’s Ryder Cup, because, as he said, “I just want to make sure that we win.” Europe captain Luke Donald, meanwhile, is toeing the official tour line when he says he’s in “limbo” waiting for the conflict to be decided in the courts.
As several of Europe’s top players prepare to play this week’s Italian Open on the Marco Simone course outside Rome that will host next year’s Ryder Cup, the pre-tournament discussion has been about who should and who should not be included on the 2023 team. “I have said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: I don’t think any of those guys should be on the Ryder Cup team,” McIlroy said Wednesday of the players who have joined the Saudi-backed breakaway series. Litigation is ongoing on both sides of the Atlantic involving the PGA and European tours after LIV golfers were excluded from events, and the divide between the players sticking to the traditional tours and those who have joined the lucrative breakaway series is growing. But Fitzpatrick, who won his first major title in June, is taking a more neutral stance. “I just want to win the Ryder Cup. ... I want the 11 best guys we can get,” said the Englishman, who lost all three of his matches when the U.S. romped to a record rout in Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, last year. “I’m not really too bothered about where they are going to come from." Fitzpatrick even went so far as to reach out to a LIV player at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last week. Stay tuned as we share more about the Ryder Cup status for LIV Golf players, the European team and other related news.

Welcome back to Athlete District, today on the channel we are going to check out why Cameron Smith won’t take Cameron Percy’s phone calls falling LIV Golf reveal + other related news. Cameron Percy has opened up on the fallout from dropping Cameron Smith firmly in it when the Australian revealed the World No.2 was signing for the LIV Golf Invitational Series. In an interview with Jamie Hall of Bunkered, the pro has explained that Smith nor Marc Leishman are returning his phone calls at present. We're not sure exactly what he would say to either. At the time it was probably the WORST kept secret in all of professional golf.
To catch you up, Percy went on the radio in August where he confirmed Leishman and the Open champion were LIV players even before it was made official. "Unfortunately, yeah, they're gone," he said. When he said that, Smith responded by saying that any news of his future will be provided by "Cameron Smith and not Cameron Percy". "I'm a man of my word and whenever you guys need to know anything it will be said by me," Smith said. A few weeks later, Smith stayed silent as LIV Golf announced the signing of their biggest asset to date. Smith has now made his debut, at LIV Golf Boston. Smith is in an all-Australian team alongside the aforementioned Leishman, Wade Ormsby and Matt Jones. He picked up $1,012,750 for finishing T-4 in his first event as a LIV player. He has reportedly signed a $140m deal with Greg Norman's league. Percy, 48, told Hall that after he gave the radio interview he woke up to "300 text messages and missed calls." Meanwhile, Cameron Smith gets $6 million payday with first win on LIV Tour. Australia's Cameron Smith has wasted no time making his mark on the LIV Tour, claiming victory in the Chicago leg this morning and banking the biggest cheque of his career. Welcome back to Athlete District. Here’s some news for you about Patrick Reed. Patrick Reed has hit back at Rory McIlroy and Billy Horschel following their comments about LIV Golf players competing in the DP World Tour's flagship tournament of the season at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last week, following an interview with The Times. McIlroy claimed it would be "hard to stomach" seeing the 17 LIV Golf Tour players aligning on the West Course, while Horschel considered a number of the LIV Golf players should not have been there and that they were "hypocrites".
"Let’s be honest, I’ve [played the DP World Tour] more consistently than some of the Europeans on the PGA Tour, so for them to take shots at other guys, especially Billy and Rory taking shots at the LIV guys saying they shouldn’t be here — I’ve done more for this Tour than Billy has and I’ve played almost as much as Rory has for the past five years. "I was able to talk to a bunch of DP World Tour players [on Tuesday] and not a single one of them had any issue with me being here because of the support I’ve shown this tour throughout my career, throughout Covid and at smaller events as well as big events. "These other guys sitting there and talking saying you can’t play two tours, that’s hypocritical as ever, these guys are playing the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour." Reed went on to finish a very respectable tied fifth in the tournament after closing with a stunning 63 to finish 14-under par. Shane Lowry won the BMW PGA Championship on 17-under par finishing one shot clear of McIlroy and Jon Rahm. Horschel, who was defending the title, finished tied ninth on 13-under par. As an Honorary Lifetime Member of the European Tour, Reed intends to return to play in as many DP World Tour events as possible moving forwards, despite having joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour. In related news, Rory McIlroy birdied the par-5 18th in darkness to take a one-shot lead heading into the weekend of the Italian Open at Marco Simone. Despite the hooter sounding to a suspension of play, McIlroy's group were already bounding down the last and so they had the option to finish and avoid an early return on Saturday morning.

Welcome back to Athlete District. Sergio Garcia is enjoying his new life as a LIV golfer. But on the DP World Tour, where he became one of Europe’s biggest stars of the past two decades, the Spaniard is predicting some tension when he and more than a dozen other LIV recruits return next week for its flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. On Saturday at the LIV Golf Invitational Boston, 2017 Masters champion joined fellow European Martin Kaymer in anticipating a degree of friction at the $8 million BMW PGA at Wentworth. That’s because 18 LIV Golfers are competing in the DP World Tour event in England due to a U.K. legal decision.
Garcia’s comments come days after two-time major winner Kaymer said he would skip the event due to ongoing friction. But Garcia, a 16-time winner on the former European Tour, will join fellow LIV golfers teeing it up at Wentworth, including Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell, along with Gooch, Patrick Reed, Abraham Ancer and Kevin Na—all in the field courtesy of their place inside the top 60 in the World Ranking. While LIV Golfers are banned by the PGA Tour, DP World Tour bylaws prevent such long-term punishments. DP World Tour officials did initially fine and suspend members who left for LIV for three summer events, but a U.K. arbiter temporarily lifted the suspensions pending a full legal review that is set for February 2023. Those tensions include DP World Tour chief Keith Pelley circulating a memo to members stating LIV golfers wouldn’t participate in the pro-am or the TV broadcast featured group while he also requested LIV golfers “consider not wearing LIV Golf-branded apparel” at Wentworth. Rory McIlroy, a member of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, said after winning the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title last week that it would be “hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing them there.”

Welcome back to Athlete District. Here’s some news for you about Cameron Smith. The question was whether Cameron Smith would add legitimacy to LIV Golf after leaving the PGA Tour and signing on as the World No. 2 and reigning Open Championship winner. While that may take time, one thing was immediately clear in the Smith’s first round on the lucrative rival tour—the mullet-wearing Australian adds considerable entertainment. Smith shot a 64 to open the 54-hole event at six under par, one shot behind co-leaders Matthew Wolff and Talor Gooch. Smith wowed the Massachusetts gallery early with three birdies and an eagle in his first eight holes, before falling down the leaderboard courtesy of a bogey, a birdie, and a double bogey in his next six.
Smith and LIV’s five other new recruits, including Joaquin Niemann and Harold Varner III, have faced criticism from major winners Gary Player and Fred Couples this week for defecting to a tour that features 48-man fields playing no-cut, 54-hole tournaments. The Player said LIV was “never going to compare to the regular [PGA] tour”. But six-time PGA Tour winner Smith said he didn’t feel any added expectations in his first 18 holes with LIV. “I don't think it was any added pressure; I just wanted to go out there and do my thing,” he said. “At the end of the day, we're all competitors and we’re trying to do what we can.” The fourth LIV tournament of its eight-event debut series began Friday with chief executive Greg Norman parachuting onto the first hole and music blaring—efforts by LIV to create its own identity.“That was something that I haven't experienced before on the first hole, but it was cool,” Smith said. “It was just a good way to start a tournament. [Today] kind of had a bit of everything; it was very up-and-down. It probably wasn't one of my best driving performances. In related news, The question coming into LIV Golf’s fourth event was the same one asked and unsatisfactorily answered in the nascent tour’s three prior starts: Could a no-cut, 54-hole tournament ever feel like a real competition? The controversial new circuit was certainly hoping so this go-around, having bolstered its 48-player roster at The International with six more PGA Tour stars including World No. 2 Cameron Smith.

Welcome Back to Athlete District. The PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been in conflict since the creation of the Saudi-backed tour. Davis Love III believes that LIV Golf never intended to cooperate with the PGA Tour. “They targeted that early on,” Love said for GOLF’s Subpar Podcast, as quoted by golf.com “So I don’t think there was any way that they wanted to get along or that they wanted to sit down and partner with us”.
Knost, who is also the host of the podcast, believes that Norman would not accept the offer to cooperate, with the aim of 'revenge' on the PGA Tour. Love III shares the same opinion. “You can hear it in what he says,” Love said. “They say we’re here to shake it up, to take over, to change golf. He says things that are so untrue. He gets up there and says, ‘We’re a closed shop’ a few weeks ago. No, I know three guys and what you’re offering them and they’re begging him to come. It’s not a closed shop. And then he says — I could see — you’ve seen it in the text messages that are released with Sergio. But he tells players they can’t suspend you for one day, much less a year. That’s a lie. Guys get suspended all the time,” Love said.
