A search of what exists already brings up expensive devices from Critter & Guitari (all their analog devices are discontinued) - they just do HDMI now and their range wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. A search also brings up some old abandoned projects. One of the Patrons to the channel is trying to build one of these now so it will be interesting to see how that goes. There have been a few people mentioning £800 video performance devices - No. I’m thinking £50ish (that seems plenty - given the current cost of Pi type power) - I’m not looking public performance, no knob twiddling or button pushing to change the output. I’d want something that you’d just turn on and it would cycle through it’s display modes. So just to recap the idea - I mentioned the Atari Video music as it’s a consumer device that takes audio in and outputs video. However it’s not perfect it’s 40-odd years old and I already own one - that was just a base point to explain the concept of the idea. Imagine today’s cheap compact computing power being put to the same purpose. Imagine a box that can take in audio and output a Milkdrop style visualiser. You’ll see lots of people mentioning old consoles too - those get their audio from their built in CD player, they are also large and require wall power. So summary.. 2019 low power cheap tech in a box - audio in - video out - proper visualiser, like Milkdrop or ITunes Visualiser not just some glitchy random nonsense - when it’s on its on and working straight away. No keyboard, configuration, messing about with settings - a Visualiser in a box. Yes it doesn’t exist and that’s why I suggested it. You won’t find this with a google search - it wasn’t a request for someone to do google search for me - it was a suggestion of an idea for anyone with time on their hands to explore. Whilst the machines presented a front of innocence to authorities, they were often used as a means to circumvent anti-gambling laws. Can you fill in the blanks?UPDATE 1 - A patron found this newspaper article about the Soundalive company. getsurrey.co.uk/news/business/firm-brings-historic-ports-heritage-4853435UPDATE 2: - Here's what we've learned so far. *The Soundalive! company provided a variety of narration devices for a number of locations.*People remember using these devices on tours in places such as Westminster Abbey - those tapes contained narration describing details about the surroundings. *It is believed that the music tapes, such as the one I used in this video were likely not used on tours, but instead were something created just to be sold in a museum gift shop. *Some people who have used these devices remember them pausing at appropriate narrative gaps on the tape and it's postulated that in these cases it could have been the tape itself that somehow triggered the auto-pause feature. The listener would then restart the tape whenever they wanted to continue with the narration. Of course it's possible that this was a feature present on a different model. With this particular machine it's not clear how a tape would trigger a pause. The tape mechanism appears just to house a standard stereo cassette play head with nothing out of the ordinary coming into contact with the tape. Output is in stereo. *There are still questions surrounding about how, where and when the radio signal pause feature was implemented. It’s possible the radio interference pausing the machine (something which can also be triggered by holding a smartphone next to the player) is just co-incidence and it’s mimicking a signal that might have been present on the narration tapes. * It was questioned as to whether a period of silence could be the thing that stops the player. I checked and the machine will continuously play through a blank tape from beginning to end without pausing.
