The film was directed by Robert Gordon and Robert Day, who directed the previous film, "Tarzan and the Great River". The costars were: Rafer Johnson as Nagambi; Aliza Gur as Myrna Claudel; and Steve Bond as Jukaro (aka Erik Brunik).The film, which was shot in Brazil, used a lot of the same sets as "Tarzan and the Great River" and the principal villain in both films were played by the same actor, Rafer Johnson, a talented sportman. Johnson won the gold medal in the decathlon at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and numerous other sporting awards. Both films also climaxed with a lengthy violent confrontation between Tarzan and Johnson's character.The attractive and buxom Aliza Gur played the reporter Myrna. Gur is best known as one of the two gypsy girls in the catfight in "From Russia With Love", Sean Connery's second James Bond film.
Sixties Cheesecake Dance No. 17 pwgr2000 2009-10-10 | PLEASE READ THIS - This clip is from the Italian peplum film, "Kindar l'invulnerabile"" (Kindar the Invulnerable - 1965), which starred the American bodybuilder, Mark Forrest. Forest, a third generation Italian from Brooklyn, was born Lou Degni. He was only the second US bodybuilder hired by Italian producers to appear in their sword and sandal epics foldowing on the success they had acheived with Steve Reeves. He can also be seen in "Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 13, which features his 1960 film, "Son of Samson". Kindar was his last Italian peplum film as he returned to the US to study opera. He currently lives in California where he sings and teaches opera."Kindar the Invulnerable" is the story of a sultan's son who possesses magical powers which make it impossible to harm him. As a baby he is kidnapped by a desert bandit who raises the boy as his own son. The film was directed by Osvaldo Civirani and also features Mimmo Palmara as Seymuth, the bandit who raises Kindar; Rosalba Neri as Kira, his mistress who has an eye for Kindar; and Dea Flowers as Nefer, the beautiful princess who falls in love with Kindar.Parts of the film were obviously shot in North Africa, possibly Egypt, but the credits do not acknowledge this. Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 35 pwgr2000 2009-10-10 | PLEASE READ THIS - The principal singer in the musical harem number aboard the space station is Rosemary Clooney, the famous aunt of George Clooney, and she appeared unbilled. The number was originally shot for the Bob Hope film, "Here Come the Girls" (1953), which also starred Arlene Dahl and Rosemay Clooney, of course. It is interesting in that it is an accurate prediction of the introduction of widescreen television for general entertainment.This sequence is from "Conquest of Space" (1955), which was also known as "Mars Project". The film was produced by the legendary George Pal, who produced a series of landmark sci-fi and fantasy films in the 1950s and 1960s that included "When Worlds Collide" (1951); "The War of the Worlds" (1953); "The Time machine" (1960); "Atlantis, The Lost Continent" (1961); and "The 7 Faces of Dr Lao" (1964). Born in Hungary, he was a multi-talented individual who rose to fame as the animator of the famous "Puppetoons" shorts which were originally made in Europe in the 1930s, and in the US in the 1940s. He was also a writer, cinematographer and director. Among the many films he directed were "The Time machine"; "Atlantis, The Lost Continent"; "The 7 Faces of Dr Lao"; and "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" (1962)."Conquest of Space" starred Walter Brooke as General Sam Merritt, the experienced space explorer who loses his moind on a trip to Mars. His son, Captain Barney Merritt, was played by Eric Fleming, who would rise to fame as Gil Favour in the popular "Rawhide" television series (1959-65) alongside Clint Eastwood. Benson Fong, who played the level-headed Imoto, appeared in numerous TV series including "Bewitched"; "Have Gun Will Travel"; "Bonanza"; and "Mission Impossible". It starred Tanya Roberts as Sheena; Ted Wass as Vic Casey, a reporter; Donovan Scott as Fletch, his photographer/partner; Elizabeth of Toro as the Zambuli Shaman; France Zobda as Countess Zabda; and Trevor Thomas as Prince Otwani. It was filmed on location in Kenya and was directed by John Guillerman, who also directed "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" (1959), "Tarzan Goes to India (1962), "The Towering Inferno (1974), and "King Kong" (1976).One of the curious things about this film is that it features shots of Tanya Roberts wearing an animal skin outfit printed with a leopard-skin pattern that was not used in the film. This suggests that this particular footage was filmed early in the development stages of the project before final wardrobe decisions had been made."Sheena" was univerally panned by critics but has developed a cult following, principally because of the the film's tanned, muscular and scantily-clad leading lady.This short promo was shown on HBO to help advertise a forthcoming screening of "Sheena". While the dancing in this clip is very brief the steamy presence of Bella Darvi more than compensates.The film starred Edmund Purdom as Sinuhe, the brilliant physician who is drawn into the intrigues of the Pharoah's court; Victor Mature plays his friend, Horemheb, who rises to power and influence; Jean Simmons appears as Merit, the shy tavern girl who is secretly in love with Sinuhe; and Bella Darvi played Nefer, the Babylonian courtesan that Sinuhe becomes increasingly infatuated with. The film was directed by Robert Aldrich, who also directed "Vera Cruz" (1954), with Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster; "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" (1962), with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford; and "The Dirty Dozen" (1967), with Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson.Stewart Granger played Lot, the nephew of Abraham, who fled, with his wife and two daughters, from the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah before they were destroyed by Jehovah; the lovely Pier Angeli played Ildith, Lot's wife, who is turned into a pillar of sodium chloride because she disobeyed the Lord's instructions and looked back at the cities as they were being destroyed (Oy vey!); Stanley Baker played Astaroth, the ambitious brother of Queen Bera of Sodom; Anouk Aimée played the cruel Queen Bera; Rossana Podestà played Lot's daughter Shuah, who falls for Astaroth; and the incoherent Scilla Gabel played Tamar, the slave girl. Sixties Cheesecake Dance No. 15 pwgr2000 2009-01-06 | PLEASE READ THIS - This clip is from the 1961 Italian Peplum version of "The Thief of Bagdad", which starred Steve Reeves as Karim. The original title was "Il Ladro di Bagdad" and was co-directed by Arthur Lubin and Bruno Vailati. Lubin was a successful director of light comedy in the US and his Abbott and Costello comedies saved Universal from bankruptcy. As a reward he was allowed to direct Universal's 1941 remake of "The Phantom of the Opera", a financial and critical success. He was also involved with both the Francis the Talking Mule series of films and the "Mister Ed" television series, about a talking horse.The film also featured Giorgia Moll as Amina, the lovesick princess; Arturo Dominici as Prince Osman, the proud ruler that vies for the love of Amina; Edy Vessel as Kadeejah, Amina's faithful handmaiden; Georges Chamarat played the magician who aids Karim on his quest; and Antonio Battistella played Amina's dithering father, the Sultan of Baghdad.I am always looking for new ideas for this series. This one, however, predates the famous Ray Harryhausen masterpiece, "Jason and the Argonauts" of 1963 (see Sixties Cheesecake Dance No. 2). However, I suspect the later inclusion of "The Argonauts" in brackets in the title sequence is a feable attempt to establish an association with that great film. Forties Cheesecake Dance No. 8 pwgr2000 2008-12-06 | PLEASE READ THIS - This clip is from "Slave Girl" (1947), which was Yvone De Carlo's first leading role. Myself, and thousands of other Baby Boomers, fell in love with Ms De Carlo when she played the role of Lily Munster in "The Munsters" (1964-1966). Prior to this she had appeared in over two dozen films, mostly in uncredited roles as showgirls, secretaries and handmiadens in films like "Road to Morocco" (1942), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1943), and "Kismet" (1944). The film was directed by Charles Lamont, who had been active in Hollywood since 1923, mostly in B-grade pictures. The film starred George Brent as a playboy loafer who ends up in Libya working for the US government. Albert Decker played the smarmy Pasha, Broderick Crawford played Chips Jackson, and Andy Devine played Ben, both captive American sailors. Humpy, the Talking Camel, provided painfully unamusing commentary throughout, principally to remind audiences not to take this ridiculous piece of drivel too seriously. Never a real danger. The film is "Maciste nella valle dei re" (1960), which translates as "Maciste in the Valley of the Kings", but was released as "Son of Samson" in English-speaking countries.Fans of sword and sandal films encounter the name "Maciste" frequently. There is a lot of disputation about the origin of the name but one theory is that it was originally a nickname for Hercules. Maciste is one of the oldest characters in Italian cinema and appeared in 26 silent films and was then revived again in the 1960s for another 25 films following the renewed interest in muscleman movies created by Steve Reeves.This film was directed by Carlo Campogalliani, who also directed the Steve Reeves film, "Goliath and the Barbarians" (1959), seen in the Fifties Cheesecake Dance Nos. 30 and 31, mentioned above. The film starred Paulette Goddard as Jezebel, the Phoenician princess who turned King Ahab away from worship of the Isrealite god towards the Phoenician god, Baal.The film was directed by Reginald Le Borg and costarred George Nader as Jehu, Eduard Franz as King Ahab and John Hoyt as Elijah. The principal dancer in this number is Carmen D'Antonio. Joe Besser, one of The Three Stooges from 1956-58 played Yonkel, the chariot man.Anyone who has seen Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 12, with Gina Lollobrigida writhing seductively to arouse the ire of Jehovah, should get a kick out of this. The principal dancer is Julie Newmar, who also appears in Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 16.Five feet eleven Newmar had an IQ of 135 and was best know as Rhoda the Robot in "My Living Doll", and as the first Catwoman on the 60s "Batman" TV series.I am always looking for new ideas for this series. Sixties Cheesecake Dance No. 12 pwgr2000 2008-06-07 | PLEASE READ THIS - Here is the wonderful multiple bellydancer sequence from "John Goldfarb, Please Come Home" (1965), featuring Shirley McLaine in a quasi-bellydance routine. In this lame farcical comedy, two Americans, a female reporter (Shirley McLaine) and a pilot (Richard Crenna), are trapped in a desert kingdom and are conspiring to help the Arabian chief's football team beat Notre Dame, with the assistance of the CIA. Notre Dame found this spoof so offensive they sued in court.The film was directed by J Lee Thompson, who also directed "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), and the original "Cape Fear" (1962). Peter Ustinov played the zany Arabian chief, and Wilfred Hyde White is great as the Arabian chief's principal advisor. Terri Garr has a small role as a harem girl and that's James Brolin struggling with the spicy stuffed mongoose. The two featured bellydancers are Sultanna, who appears first, and Nai Bonet, who follows.The writer of this turkey, was William Peter Blatty, who wrote both the novel and screenplay of "The Exorcist" (1975).I am always looking for new ideas for this series. The film was directed by Delmer Daves and starred Debra Paget as Kalua, the island's princess; Jeff Chandler as her brother, Tenga; Louis Jordan as Andre, the French foreigner who falls in love with her; Prince Lei Lani as the Chief; Maurice Schwartz as The Kahuna; and Everett Sloane as The Beachcomber.It is interesting to contrast these two clips with Thirties Cheesecake Dances Nos. 2 and 3, which feature segments from the Pre-Hays Code version of 1932 directed by King Vidor. In that film the native dancing is more passionate and abandoned, Delores Del Rio dances topless with only a lei of flowers around her neck to cover her breasts, and she is much more flirtatious and sensual than the demure Kalua portrayed by Debra Paget. Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 27 pwgr2000 2008-05-27 | PLEASE READ THIS - This dance number is from "Ercole e la regina di Lidia" ("Hercules Unchained") from 1959, one of Steve Reeves classic Italian 50s peplum films. Although Reeves is universally associated with the character of Hercules he played the role only twice. In "Hercules" (1958), and this film, it's sequal. He held a variety of bodybuildng titles, including Mr Universe in 1950. His voice is dubbed in all of his Italian peplum films. The film was directed by Pietro Francisci, who also directed "La Regina di Saba" (The Queen of Sheba) from 1952 (see Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 10). The film starred Steve Reeves as Hercules (Ercole); Sylva Koscina as Iole, the bride of Hercules; Sylvia Lopez as Queen Omphale, of Lidia (whudda gal!); Gabriele Antonini as Ulyses, the son of Laertes; and Primo Carnera as Antaeus the giant. The principal dancer, a trained ballet dancer, is also utilising a few moves from classical Indian dance, including bharatanatyam, one of the South indian dance styles. Sixties Cheesecake Dance No. 11 pwgr2000 2008-05-18 | PLEASE READ THIS - This segment is from "The Vengeance of She" (1968), the cheap sequel to Ursula Andress's "She" from 1965. About three-quarters of the film takes place in modern Europe and the lead role, now called Carol instead of Ayesha, is played by Olinka Berova (aka Olga Schoberová). She was the first Czech actress to gain foreign acclaim, principally from appearing in Playboy magazine. This Hammer Films production was directed by Cliff Owen and also featured John Richardson, recreating his role as Killikrates from the original. Among the cosstars were Edward Judd, Colin Blakely and Jill Melford. Ms Berova's wooden acting relegated her to a series of forgetable roles in European cinema. Drake appeared in numerous films during the 1940s, after he returned from the war. During an interview he was asked if he had a favourite amongst his early films and he replied, "It's definitely 'A Walk in the Sun' (1945), where I played Tim Rankin, the tommy-gunner. There were a lot of big names in that film, including Dana Andrews, Lloyd Bridges, John Ireland, Richard Conte, Norman Lloyd and Huntz Hall. It was a very realistic portrayal of combat." This time the role of Tarzan was played by Glen Morris, the 1936 Olympic decathlon champion. His female lead was Eleanor Holm, an Olympic backstoke champion from 1928 and 1932. The film was directed by Raoul Walsh and Mario Bava, as it was a joint US-Italian production filmed in Italy. Joan Collins played Esther, a Jewish concubine who is made queen by a Persian King and Richard Egan plays King Ahasuerus. The buxom Italian actress Daniela Rocca played the scheming Queen Vashti.This sequence features Daniela Rocca performing Queen Vashti's provocative dance in an attempt to entice King Ahasuerus back under her spell.I am always looking for new ideas for this series. Sixties Cheesecake Dance No. 6 pwgr2000 2008-04-01 | PLEASE READ THIS - Now here's a strange number. This dance sequence is from "La Regina delle Amazzoni" (Colossus and the Amazon Queen), an Italian sword and sandal epic from 1960. It starred Rod Taylor, the Australian actor best know for H G Wells' "The Time Machine" (also 1960), as Piro and, and sword and sandal stalwart, Ed Fury, as Glauco. They played wise-cracking strongmen who make the mistake of falling for a couple feisty Amazons on a Greek island. An actress with the inmprobable name of Dorian Gray (yes, the Oscar Wilde novel) played Antiope, Fury's love interest and Gianna Maria Canale played the Amazon Queen who becomes involved with Taylor. The film was directed by Vittorio Sala.The incongruous hip brassy score and beat style choreography add a bizarre modern touch to this piece of peplum.I am always looking for new ideas for this series.
