Get Carter marked the film debut for both Hodges and supporting actor Alun Armstrong. Principal photography took place in and around Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and County Durham. Hodges and Caine, the latter of whom served as a co-producer, had ambitions to produce a more gritty and realistic portrayal of violence and criminal behaviour than had previously been seen in British films, with Caine incorporating his knowledge of real criminal acquaintances into his characterisation of Carter. Hodges and cinematographer Wolfgang Suschitzky drew heavily on their backgrounds in documentary films, combined with Hodges' research into the contemporary criminal underworld of Newcastle (in particular the one-armed bandit murder) and the use of hundreds of local bystanders as extras, resulting in a naturalistic feel in many scenes. The shoot was largely incident-free and progressed speedily, despite a one-day strike by the Association of Cinematograph, Television and Allied Technicians. The production went from novel to finished film in eight months, with location shooting lasting 40 days.Get Carter suffered in its promotion due to MGM's financial problems and the declining British film industry of the period, which relied increasingly on US investment. Initial UK critical reception to the film was mixed; reviewers grudgingly appreciated the film's technical achievements but were dismayed by the complex plot, violence and amorality, in particular Carter's apparent lack of remorse at his actions. Despite this, the film turned a respectable profit in the UK. The screenplay was loosely based on the contemporary Whit Masterson novel Badge of Evil (1956). The cast included Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff and Marlene Dietrich.Universal-International commissioned the film adaptation of the novel in April 1956. Albert Zugsmith was selected as producer, who then hired television writer Paul Monash to write the script. Charlton Heston was brought onboard to star in January 1957 and suggested that Orson Welles direct the project. Welles was hired to direct and star, as well as re-write the script. Filming started the next month and wrapped in April. During the film's post-production, creative differences between Welles and Universal executives arose and Welles was forced off the film. Subsequently, Universal-International revised the film's editing style to be more conventional and ordered re-shoots to be made in November 1957. In response to the new version, Welles wrote a 58-page memo in which he elaborately outlined his creative vision for the film and asked that his version be restored.Initially dismissed by film critics, Touch of Evil found popularity among European audiences and won top awards at the 1958 Brussels World Film Festival. During the 1970s, its reputation was renewed and it is now widely regarded as one of Welles's best motion pictures and one of the best classic-era noir films.
