Petroglyphs of Huanacaure | PART 2 | Petroglyphs in the Amazon of Satipo, Junín Peru - 2024
updated
The Cachipuquio salt mine is formed by two wells where the water is deposited. One is saltier than the other. since colonial times, the wells have been baptized, one with the name of San Pedro and the other with that of Santa Catalina, designations that persist to this day. The meaning of the word "Cachipuquio" comes from 2 Quechua words: Cachi which means "salt" and Puquio "spring". Filmed on location November 13, 2023 in the high altitudes of the central Andean Highlands of Peru, Jonathan W. Alexander is your host presenting the first ever report given in English from this site and relating the fascinating legend of Cachipuquio in an all new episode of 'Mystic Places, Magical Mystery Tour'.

*Due to the extreme altitude and the current seasonal weather, we found this site to be most unhospitable with high winds freezing rain and hail, therefore we were only able to take some brief video and a few photos which will be released soon, hopefully we will be able to visit this breathtaking site again in the future perhaps in the dry season of July. We are going to have to call off any further investigations in the Pasco region for now due to the seasonal freezing rains and the extremely high altitude!

Brien Foerster explains how “All ancient Native Peruvians supposedly trace their ancestry from 4 haplogroups: A, B, C, D; however, recent DNA testing of the Paracas has shown the presence of such haplogroups as U2e, H, K and J1b1, which can be traced back to the Black Sea and Crimea" And also "Many of the older, of the elongated Paracas skulls appears to be much larger than normal, and thus is unlikely to be an example of cranial deformation, but could very well have been born like this." The buildings of Ichugán are made of stone along with clay mortar. These constructions found in Ichugán belonged to the architecture of the Yaro society, present in the 9th century in the area, however, the presence of towers with Inca characteristics is considerable.
In the buildings of Ichugán, we can appreciate the presence of circular buildings, which are attractive because they have two floors, reaching heights of 5 and 7 meters, in addition to having a circular shape, similar to those found in the complex of Chumpinvilca. These buildings possibly would have had residential purposes. It is presumed that these homes would have been surrounded by a kind of wall, which disappeared over the years.
In this archaeological complex of Ichugán, you can see in a large part of the site the presence of stairs, which were intended as a means of access to the different areas of the place. In Ichugán you can also find a viewpoint or observatory, which allows visual control of the areas surrounding the complex. In Ichugán, the discovery of structures that would have been intended to be ovens and that demonstrate the ceramic knowledge of this culture is also notable.

This archaeological site is made up of anti-seismic palaces (rectangular, quadrangular and mixtilinear buildings) formed from stone with mud mortar, interconnected by means of rectilinear openings (doors) characteristic of the Yarush culture, and open-air patios.
Exterior view of a typical Yarush palace. These buildings were interconnected with openings (Yarush style doors) and open-air courtyards.
Yarushpampa was a centralized urbanization in which functions of daily life were carried out. From this place, links were established with the countryside and their respective agricultural and hunting activities on the slopes and plateaus of the region.
At this archaeological site a very precise information sign is displayed, which shows: “Yarushpampa: YARUSHPAMPA II archaeological site established between 800 – 1400 AD. in the humid plain of the right bank of the Huarautambo River. It is a town of the Yarush culture phase II, whose phase I we have discovered in the Yarush ravine and its plains of the Huayhuash mountain range, where we have discovered its origins that date back to the early intermediate. It is made up of palaces with patios built from medium-sized edged stones and small slabs that, like a mosaic, complete the facings. They have a rectangular or quadrangular plan with Yarush-type entrances in the center of one of its walls. They are characterized by presenting a rectangular tomb roofed with long lithic beams and ornamental niches on the interior walls, some palaces have small altars in one of their internal corners and others a line of worn fulling mills for significant Yarush festival use. With the passage of time this sign has been demolished, currently there are very few news media that show any relevant data about the archaeological site, in situ.
Taking into account the excavation and identification works carried out from 2006 to 2008, as well as the archaeological investigations established by an agreement between the UNMSM (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos) and the Gorepa (Regional Government of Pasco) between 2007 to 2010. It is It is possible to affirm that this place was inhabited by the Yarush culture (Yarush phase II) until the year 1000 AD and then by the Yacha ethnic group until the end of the year 1400 AD.
The construction of this archaeological site would have occurred during the year 800 AD, this date has been placed by some archaeologists in the Middle Horizon period while others, such as Luis Guillermo Lumbreras, place it in the Regional Cultures period. It would be on this date when the Yarush began the construction of the enclosures, which would continue during the period of the Huari Empire, until the year 1000 AD. Later, this place would be abandoned by the Yarush and taken by the Yacha who lasted until 1400 AD.

The Inca bridge built by Pachacutec and still in use 500 years later, the bridge is considered unique in the history of Tahuantinsuyo and is built from polished stone up to 2 meters high. The archaeological complex is linked to the cult of water, The Huarautambo Bridge was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the National Institute of Culture in 2003. 12 years later, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru put the one sol coin into circulation which has on the obverse the drawing of the site, which has become a tourist attraction, as part of the numismatic series 'Wealth and pride of Peru'.

One was embedded in a façade and another in the wall that surrounds the plaza of that town, in the Daniel Alcides Carrión province. The relation between Chawin and Chavín could be evidence of interregional interaction involving the Peruvian central highlands during the late Initial Period.

About Kotosh Monumental Archaeological Zone.
The archaeological center of Kotosh, located near the Higueras River, 4 kilometers west of Huánuco, has one of the oldest temples in America, which is the temple of "Las Manos Cruzadas" This place was discovered by Julio C. Tello in 1935, carrying out excavations in the area with a Japanese delegation between 1960 and 1966.
Kotosh would be 4 thousand years old and lasted until 200 AD. It consists of three temples: the White Temple, the Temple of the Crossed Hands and the Temple of the Nichitos and they date from the Kotosh myth period, from the beginning of this culture.
The Kotosh Religious Tradition is a term used by archaeologists to refer to the ritual buildings that were constructed in the mountain drainages of the Andes between circa 3000 and 1800 BCE, during the Andean preceramic, or Late Archaic period of Andean history.

The White Mantle is a jewel of Peruvian textile art from the Paracas culture. In this video we visit the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology UNMSM – Lima, Peru and take a detailed look at the Paracas White Mantle which was acquired by renowned archaeologist Julio C. Tello and delivered to the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. The Paracas White Mantle was collected by Tello on one of his expeditions to Pisco, between 1913 and 1920. This valuable piece is part of the museum's early collections. The textile technique used for its preparation is the plain 1x1 fabric with decorative edges and perimeter fringes, made from cotton. The decorative technique is based on back stitch embroidery. To do this, use previously dyed colored threads. The decorated area of the structural part of the piece presents designs of characters that carry trophy heads or sticks in their hands and are arranged alternately, in order to maintain horizontal, vertical and diagonal symmetry. The border designs present the same characters, but their arrangement is aligned and continuous. The decorative technique is based on back stitch embroidery. To do this, use previously dyed colored threads. the paracas culture used the colors green, yellow, red and black. Designs of mythological beings represented in textiles from Paracas Caverns.

The figure refers to the ceremony of the legend of El Dorado. It represents the ceremony of investiture of the Muisca chief, which used to take place at . During this ritual, the heir to the chieftainship (zipa) covered his body with gold dust and jumped into the lake along with gold offerings and emeralds to appease the gods that lived underwater.
The Spaniards started calling this golden chief El Dorado, "the gilded one." The ceremony of the gilded man supposedly ended in the late 15th century when El Dorado and his subjects were conquered by another tribe. But the Spaniards and other Europeans had found so much gold among the natives along the continent's northern coast that they believed there had to be a place of great wealth somewhere in the interior.
The piece has a base in the shape of a log boat with dimensions of 19.5 cm x 10.1 cm and various figures on the raft, the largest figure that stands in the middle apparently represents the chief, which is adorned with headdresses, nose rings and earrings, measuring 10.2 cm and is surrounded by his soldiers who carry banners.
The raft was found by three farmers in early 1969 in a cave in the village of Lázaro Fonte in the municipality of Pasca (Cundinamarca), Colombia, in a ceramic pot, adorned with a human figure whose face has sharp teeth. The priest of the municipality protected the piece until it was acquired by Bogota's Gold Museum and where it has become one of its major exhibition piece.
Composition
The Muisca raft weighs 287.5 grams. It is an alloy of gold with copper and silver. An analysis using X-ray fluorescence has revealed breakdown of the composition as detailed in the table below:
Thus, the raft contains approximately 7.38 troy ounces (229 grams) of gold.

The name of the pucará derives from two Quechua voices: "Rumi" (Stone) and "Cucho" (corner), by concatenating the voices you get "Rumicucho" which means "stone corner"; although formerly it was called Lulumbamba from "Lulum" (fertile) and "Bamba" or "Pampa" (plain) which means "fertile plain"
It fulfilled diverse functions such as military, religious and immigration control, although of all of them the most important was the first. After the conquests of the surrounding areas, the Incas built this pucará as a way to consolidate their positions. Researchers and archaeologists deduce that Rumicucho fulfilled the military function not only because of the strategic location in which the pucará was located, but also because of the architectural form. that is, by the distribution of spaces and objects found. As for the religious function, the architectural form of the third terrace is well known and as an observation of the La Marca and Cayambe hills, hills that are arranged horizontally in an east-west direction that at the equinox the sun travels in that direction and taking into account It is said that the pucará is located a short distance from the equatorial strip, so it follows that Rumicucho was also a place of worship for the inti and an astronomical observatory. It also served as a checkpoint between Quito and the northern towns, the Incas controlled the entrance and exit of Quito through Rumicucho.
Rumicucho belongs to the mixed architectural style (combination of Inca architectural styles with local architectural styles), is of the pirka or rustic type and corresponds to the imperial or expansion phase.[citation needed] It is around 380 m long by 75 m wide, made up of 5 terraces following the pyramidal shape of the hill.
These terraces have different shapes (rectangular, quadrangular and circular) and different sizes. The distributed shape of the pucará is elongated in a north-south direction. The distribution of spaces is as follows.
First terrace: Ritual place and food consumption.
Second terrace: Ritual place and food consumption.
Third terrace: Ceremonial area.
Fourth terrace: Unknown.
Fifth terrace: Domestic and residential area
Lateral spaces: Domestic and residential area

Paredones de Molleturo is what is traditionally called the archaeological remains located in the branch of the western mountain range, from the province of Cañar to the south and more specifically between Azuay, El Oro and the north of the province of Loja, near the parish of Molleturo, characterized by large foundations, gates, cushion stone bases in the purest Inca style, scattered over an approximate area of 200 hectares.”115
On the Cuenca-Molleturo- Naranjal road, 67 km from Cuenca, we find the hamlet of San Pedro de Yumate, 6 km in front of Molleturo, heading south-west, along a bridle path, until reaching a vast esplanade, where it is possible a vision and being able, with good weather, to see the snowy Chimborazo from the ruins.
The construction of these huge blocks is solid based on boulders and blocks edged and carved in andesite rock in the pure classic Inca style, which are on top of others, forming parallel rows joined with clay mortar. yellow, typical of the area. The walls are 2.40m high and 0.80m wide, this type of construction is called "pirca".
It is within the Inca tradition to build Andean settlements in places of strategic location and high visibility, but not everything is Inca in these ruins, traces of a Cañari settlement prior to the Inca period have been found, it shows us the expansion of this culture, according to some researchers one of the towns that offered the most resistance to the expansion of Cuzco, precisely Chideleg, in the Cañari language it means narrow plain, as opposed to Guapondeleg (current Cuenca), the community of Molleturo has organized to defend the integrity of this archaeological monument, rich tourist potential and undoubted identity stick.”
In the 16th century, Cristóbal de Albornoz already referred to the Molleturo huacas, giving them a relevant importance. "And another was in Molleturo, a very important guaca of the Cañares Indians, it is a very large hill where Topa Inca Yupanqui placed a large number of guacas of many names."
Villiers is one of the first informants of the place, having published his work in 1931. He considers that one of the possible meanings comes from a plant that is in the place called folletín or mullintini (Muhlemberchia Tamnifolia)."
The site has been considered as a large fortress, where the Incas lived for some years, as it is strategic for the connection with the Coast and with Peru through the path of the avocados or Túmbez and Palta, having left testimonies in the place and on the old road to Naranjal, of fine works in andesite stones from the same place and in others of diorite and porphyry, brought from distant places.
Villiers says that he picked up a legend about the permanence of Cañaris and Puruháes who were preparing for war there.
In 1985 the archaeologist Jaime Idrovo made a new description of the ruins, reporting the existence of cultivation terraces, which according to investigations actually correspond to housing foundations.
Antonio Carrillo, one of the most important archaeologists, considers that this area is one of the most important, since it has an area of 100 hectares of ruins and is considered a city and is called Chideleg because of the area where it is located.
The word "Chideleg" comes from two words Cañaris Chi which means small and deleg valley; that is to say “small valley”.
The set of ruins is found on the high plateau between the peaks of the Chideleg mountain Paredones de Molleturo mountain range that emerges from the Western Cordillera in an East-West direction towards the Pacific Ocean. These ruins are accessed by a 4km-long bridle path, starting from San Pedro de Yumate, a hamlet that belongs to the Molleturo parish.
The aboriginal vestiges and settlements found in different places are known by the name of Paredones together with the name of the place where they were found."
The fortress, located at the top of the Chideleg hill, has an entrance, a guard room, corrals, platforms, remains of houses and barracks, baths, a shrine, a food store, stairs and retaining walls. There are also remains of aqueducts and constructions to overcome the unevenness. In short, the ruins of Molleturo are extensive and have many of the units that we have observed in Pumapungo or Ingapirca. Of the constructions, most have been destroyed and the ashlars have been reused in the houses of the inhabitants of the place; however, there are still walls, artificial platforms and fences of possible llama corrals and crop terraces. The main traces of houses correspond to a house of 10 m. by 5m., to another of 10m. by 10m., divided in half and above all, to a large building, covered with weeds and with quinoa trees, the typical plant of the area (polylepis sp).

In Inca times, Qorikancha (Quechua for 'Golden Courtyard') was literally covered with gold. The temple walls were lined with some 700 solid-gold sheets. The religious complex of Coricancha (Qorikancha) in the Inca capital at Cuzco contained the Temple of the Sun which was not only the most sacred site or huaca in the Inca religion but was considered the very center of the Inca world.
Originally named Intikancha or Intiwasi, t was dedicated to Inti, and is located at the former Inca capital of Cusco. Most of the temple was destroyed after the 16th-century war with the Spanish conquistadors, as settlers also took it apart to build their own churches and residences. Much of its stonework was used as the foundation for the seventeenth-century Santo Domingo Convent. It was built after the 1650 earthquake destroyed the first Dominican convent. To construct Coricancha, the Inca used ashlar masonry, building from the placement of similarly sized cuboid stones that they had cut and shaped for this purpose. The use of ashlar masonry made the temple much more difficult to construct, as the Inca did not use any stone with a slight imperfection or break. By choosing this masonry type, the Inca intentionally demonstrated the importance of the building through the extent of the labor necessary to build the structure. Through the arduous labor needed to construct buildings with ashlar masonry, this form of construction came to signify the Inca's imperial power to mobilize and direct local labor forces. The replication throughout Andean South America of Inca architectural techniques, such as those employed at Coricancha, expressed the extent of Inca control over a vast geographic region. Pachakutiq Inca Yupanqui rebuilt Cusco and the House of the Sun, enriching it with more oracles and edifices, and adding plates of fine gold. He provided vases of gold and silver for the Mama-cunas, nuns or cloistered women, to use in the veneration services. Finally, he took the bodies of the seven deceased Incas and adorned them with masks, head-dresses, medals, bracelets, and scepters of gold, placing them on a golden bench. The walls were once covered in sheets of gold, and the adjacent courtyard was filled with golden statues. Spanish reports tell of an opulence that was "fabulous beyond belief". When the Spanish in 1533 required the Inca to raise a ransom in gold for the life of their leader Atahualpa, most of the gold was collected from Coricancha. The Spanish colonists built the Convent of Santo Domingo on the site, demolishing the temple and using its foundations for the cathedral. They also used parts of the building for other churches and residences. Construction took most of a century. This is one of numerous sites where the Spanish incorporated Inca stonework into the structure of a colonial building. Major earthquakes severely damaged the church, but the Inca stone walls, built out of huge, tightly interlocking blocks of stone, still stand due to their sophisticated stone masonry.

Astronomical complexes were first identified at Uaxactun, and are identified throughout Mesoamerica as “E Groups”. The formal placement of these structures allowed the Maya to observe astronomical events such as the solstices and equinoxes, which in turn help to determine agricultural, seasonal, and ritual events.
There is a modern village and an old airstrip that are located among the ruins. The air strip divides the site into eastern and western sectors, and the whole site consists of 6 main groups.
HISTORY
Uaxactun traces its settlement back to the Middle Pre Classic and was continuously inhabited until the end of the Late Classic (600-1000 A.D.). Stone architecture began appearing at the end of the Late Pre Classic (300 B.C.-200 A.D.) mirroring the development of nearby Tikal. Both these sites were dwarfed by the great city/state of El Mirador whose influence extended throughout the Peten.
In 378 A.D. the dynastic rule at Tikal was altered by the arrival of Siyaj K’ahk,”Fire is Born”, a royal warrior from Teotihuacan. He assumed control of both Uaxactun and Tikal, and proclaimed himself king. This began a dynastic succession of kings who greatly expanded the city and its fortunes.
Tikal suffered a crushing defeat by Calakmul in 562 A.D., and this had a negative effect on Uaxactun. Little building activity or stela dedications were noted between 554 and 711 A.D.
After this hiatus the city began a resurgence with restoration and expansion of its structures. By the end of the 9th century the general area-wide decline of the Maya reached the city with the last recorded inscription dated to 889 A.D. This monument records a Katun ending ceremony (10.3.0.0.0./May 2, 889 A.D.) and was erected by the last king, K’al Chik’in Chakte, with the king of Tikal, Hasaw Chan K’awiil II, in attendance. The city was abandoned not long thereafter.
In 1916 Sylvanus Morley rediscovered the site. This was one of the first sites to be systematically explored, studied and excavated. In the 1920’s the Carnegie Institute identified the purpose of a group of structures in an area known as Group E as an observatory.
STRUCTURES
The old air strip, now an open space, divides the site into two distinct zones. Groups A-C are located to the west of the airstrip, while Groups E-F and H are found to the east. There are impressive Pre Classic structures underlying a number of buildings in Groups A, E, and H.
The oldest group is Group E. This area dates back to the Pre Classic, around 600 B.C., with continued building and expansion through the Early Classic. Temple E-VII-B was found with a decorated platform and large stucco masks. It is a flat topped pyramid with stairways on all four sides. Similar structures from the same time period appear at Group H in Uaxactun, at El Mirador, and at Lamanai and Cerros in Belize. These consist of large stucco masks flanking the stairways of the terraces of the structures, and represent mythological gods with astronomical associations.
This Temple fronts the west side of a plaza. Directly across is a platform with a triadic arrangement of pyramidal structures that align to the solstices and equinoxes when viewed from Temple VII-B. Two small complexes fill out the plaza, with the south complex hosting 3 small temples on a raised platform.
Group H, another Pre Classic group, is located to the east of Group E. It consists of two plazas oriented on a north/south axis. The South Plaza contains some fabulous early structures that had been buried beneath later construction, and featuring large stucco masks and decorative facades.
This complex contains six temples built atop a small acropolis. Structure H-Sub-3 (east side), is a three tiered temple that has large stucco decorations of the Witz (mountain) Monster flanking a central stairway to an upper level. On the north side of the acropolis is a small platform containing a triadic arrangement of three small pyramidal structures. Group H was buried and abandoned in the second century A.D.
Group A, on the west side of the airstrip, is the largest group of structures at the site. The buildings that are seen today are mostly from the Classic period (200-900 A.D), and are clustered around the Main Plaza.

Legends among the local natives suggest that these petroglyphs could have ben inspired by yagé or ayahuasca, a psychotropic visionary concoction that is used to this day by the Shamans or Yachak of the area. Many aspects of the ancient way of life and beliefs of the Pre-Hispanic Cultures of this area have been memorized in the drawings made by the hands of the Yachaks (Shamans) in these petroglyphs which constitute, respectively, the heritage and cultural transmission of a people, for future generations and thus warrant study and preservation.
The glyphs refer to those aspects related to the life of the tribal group, their way of perceiving the world and their historical reality to which they belonged, namely: Origins, Mythological Representations, Totemic References, Religious Symbolism, cultural and magical-symbolic representation, Institutionalization of rites and memory of local facts, Sexual Physiology (fertility, procreation, growth, incest, etc., Marriage and tribal laws, Exogamy, alliances, tribal or territorial limits, guides for migrant groups and indicators of the best hunting and fishing areas, ecological adaptation and food, Aboriginal meeting center and Yachaks (Shamans) Center, Astronomical (registration of constellations, planets, stars, etc.), Meteorological or atmospheric phenomena, Death and cemeteries indicators.
According to the early investigations carried out by Father Pedro Porras, in which he presents a detailed study of all the petroglyphs found and first documented by him, both in Cotundo, Archidona, Tena and Puerto Napo, the investigations manage to identify the existence of four styles of glyphs and that he was able to date them thanks to the comparisons he made between petroglyphs and drawings found on clay pots and other artifacts found in the province of Napo as the following styles pertaining to dates as such; “match stick” style to 300 B.C. Preceramic and Formative Period. “closed contour” style 300 B.C. to 300 AD Preceramic and Formative Period. “abstract” style 300 AD to 1200 AD Integration Period. and “figurative” style 1200 AD up to Colonial Period.

The city is thought to have been established around 100 BC, with major monuments continuously under construction until about AD 250. The city may have lasted until sometime between the 7th and 8th centuries AD, but its major monuments were sacked and systematically burned around 550 AD. At its zenith, perhaps in the first half of the 1st millennium AD, Teotihuacan was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, with a population estimated at 125,000 or more, making it at minimum the sixth largest city in the world during its epoch. Teotihuacan began as a new religious center in the Mexican Highland around the first century AD. This city came to be the largest and most populated center in the New World. Teotihuacan was even home to multi-floor apartment compounds built to accommodate this large population. The term Teotihuacan (or Teotihuacano) is also used for the whole civilization and cultural complex associated with the site.
Although it is a subject of debate whether Teotihuacan was the center of a state empire, its influence throughout Mesoamerica is well documented; evidence of Teotihuacano presence can be seen at numerous sites in Veracruz and the Maya region. The Aztecs may have been influenced by this city. The ethnicity of the inhabitants of Teotihuacan is also a subject of debate. Possible candidates are the Nahua, Otomi, or Totonac ethnic groups. Scholars have also suggested that Teotihuacan was a multiethnic state.
The city and the archaeological site are located in what is now the San Juan Teotihuacán municipality in the State of México, approximately 40 kilometers (25 mi) northeast of Mexico City. The site covers a total surface area of 83 square kilometers (32 sq. mi) and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It is the most visited archaeological site in Mexico.

Palenque (Spanish pronunciation: [pa'leŋke]; Yucatec Maya: Bàakʼ [ɓaːkʼ]), also anciently known as Lakamha (literally: "Big Water"), was a Maya city state in southern Mexico that perished in the 7th century. The Palenque ruins date from ca. 226 BC to ca. 799 AD. After its decline, it was overgrown by the jungle of cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees, but has since been excavated and restored. It is located near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, about 130 km (81 mi) south of Ciudad del Carmen, 150 meters (490 ft) above sea level. It averages a humid 26 °C (79 °F) with roughly 2,160 millimeters (85 in) of rain a year.
Palenque is a medium-sized site, smaller than Tikal, Chichen Itza, or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Mayas produced. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the city-state's rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná. The most famous ruler of Palenque was K'inich Janaab Pakal, or Pacal the Great, whose tomb has been found and excavated in the Temple of the Inscriptions.
By 2005, the discovered area covered up to 2.5 km2 (1 sq mi), but it is estimated that less than 10% of the total area of the city is explored, leaving more than a thousand structures still covered by jungle. Palenque received 920,470 visitors in 2017
History
Mythological beings using a variety of emblem glyphs in their titles suggests a complex early history. For instance, Kʼukʼ Bahlam I, the supposed founder of the Palenque dynasty, is called a Toktan Ajaw in the text of the Temple of the Foliated Cross.
The famous structures that we know today probably represent a rebuilding effort in response to the attacks by the city of Calakmul and its client states in 599 and 611. One of the main figures responsible for rebuilding Palenque and for a renaissance in the city's art and architecture is also one of the best-known Maya Ajaw, Kʼinich Janaabʼ Pakal (Pacal the Great), who ruled from 615 to 683. He is known through his funerary monument dubbed the Temple of Inscriptions, after the lengthy text preserved in the temple's superstructure. At the time Alberto Ruz Lhuillier excavated Pakal's tomb, it was the richest and best preserved of any scientifically excavated burial then known from the ancient Americas. It held this position until the discovery of the rich Moche burials at Sipan, Peru and the recent discoveries at Copan and Calakmul.

A bas-relief in the Palenque museum that depicts Upakal K'inich, the son of K'inich Ahkal Mo' Naab III.
Beside the attention that K'inich Janaab' Pakal's tomb brought to Palenque, the city is historically significant for its extensive hieroglyphic corpus composed during the reigns of Janaab' Pakal, his son Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II, and his grandson K'inich Akal Mo' Naab', and for being the location where Heinrich Berlin and later Linda Schele and Peter Mathews outlined the first dynastic list for any Maya city. The work of Tatiana Proskouriakoff as well as that of Berlin, Schele, Mathews, and others, initiated the intense historical investigations that characterized much of the scholarship on the ancient Maya from the 1960s to the present. The extensive iconography and textual corpus has also allowed for study of Classic period Maya mythology and ritual practice.

MURALLA PACHACUTEC

ENGLISH-
El Mogote Archaeological Site is located on the beach of the town of Colán in the province of Paita located in the department of Piura in northern Peru. An area of 4.84 hectares. They consist of an artificial sand mound or Moche pyramid that was built and used as a ceremonial area in pre-Columbian times by the Moche culture. The site retains little resemblance to what it would have in the past, yet the site is littered with countless pottery shards and human and animal remains. Unfortunately the site has been nearly destroyed in years after due to extreme weather and grave robbers, it should also be noted that the site is today extremely full of modern trash and has recently been invaded by illegal land sales and occupations.

Setting out from the small Amazonian town of Gualaquiza, on the local transport called a ranchero for an hour long rough ride through rural Amazonian farm lands up and down green mountains covered thick in Amazonian vegetation. This was the second set of petroglyphs we were headed to this time in this area as we had been to the Petroglifos De El Empalme the day before. However we were fast discovering these were a bit harder to locate and no one there hardly even knew the word Petroglifos! Much less even as to where to find them. After the hour or so ride out to the dirt road that lead off to them or where our bad directions seem to lead us, we got off and me with maps and papers in hand I start asking people along the roadside awaiting buses to various locations nearby on local public transports called rancheros. Finally a drunk one legged man selling slices of watermelon on his bicycle gets the attention of a Taxi driver passing by... then we finally, from this man receive some assistance from someone who did not turn my map or papers upside down to try and read them, He said it was just up the main road a short bit off another dirt road and then down a trail. He offered to give us a ride closer to the sight and for free of charge. We drove a short bit then he stopped and said go down this long dirt road about 3 km. Then take the trail to the left, So we walked in the searing sun and humidity for about 3 hours searching various trails asking the very few and scarce people we would hardly ever encounter! No one knowing anything about such a rock or of the property owner of which I had the name! Finally after 3+ hours of searching right near a trail I was really felling was the one we were looking for, we encountered a young guy on a motorcycle passing by and I flagged him down and he said yes he knew of it and it was just down that very trail of which I was nearly standing at the entrance to. We followed the trail for about 15 or 20 minuets deeper and ever deeper into the sweltering jungle as I distinctly recall with one of those pesky bugs that fly around and around your head until you fell like you will go insane! But eventually in the beautiful and dense emerald green Amazon Rainforest jungle we came upon a little wooden shack of a farm house surrounded by many and various farm animals and citrus trees, I hollered and asked for assistance with greetings most friendly in Spanish and just than a middle aged woman appears and I introduce us and what we are doing and show her the info I have on the rock and archeology in the area and I explain my plans for filming and photographing the petroglyphs, It turns out she is the daughter of the property owner of which I had the name of and she said it was on her fathers finca (farm). The kind lady took nicely to our plan and agrees to take us to see it hacking the way out through the thick undergrowth ahead of us with a machete as she leads us ever deeper and deeper into the denser and denser green Amazon jungle. Finally we reach it! I believe it was one of the least visited, undisturbed, natural, magical and mystical places we have ever visited! The rock and ancient carvings in its moss and fern covered surface were impressive and seem to have been likely an ancient alter of sacrifice most likely dedicated to a sun deity or perhaps purely the sun itself. with the sound of howler monkeys in the distance and the sun setting we set with the rock and studied, filmed and photographed it in all detail. while slapping mosquitoes, the lady returned to her home leaving us with the ancient rock covered in petroglyphs. Eventually we made our own way back out of the dense jungle most pleased in the fact we had seen and photographed another hidden archeological treasure of South America from an ancient and forgotten lost civilization.

In this case, the mummy retains it's dried skin intact. Her hands are flexed toward her head, covering the left side of her face. Traces of the wrapping textile have remained imprinted on her skin. The deformed skull is of the elongated type, which traditionally it is believed that this is the results of such practices as cranial deformation that were carried out starting a few days after birth, using bandages, boards and cotton ropes. This type of cranial deformation was common among the Paracas culture and is believed to indicate a possible status, social or ethnic differentiations.. However according to author and investigator Brien Foerster, “The head appears to be much larger than normal, and thus is unlikely to be an example of cranial deformation, but could very well have been born like this”... There is more and more emerging evidence for this theory that some of these ancient peoples were indeed perhaps of a different sub-species of human and were possibly the remnants of a lost race or even could have been examples of possible human-something else hybrids!?

It is not known for sure who commissioned the building of the temple, but archaeologists have narrowed it down to Huayna Capac, emperor of the Incan Empire (1493 - 1525/1527), or his son Atahualpa.
According to the publication Archaeology, the site was known as an historic area by locals, and excavations in 2006 revealed a large ceremonial pool stretching approximately 33 feet by 55 feet. It was uncovered four to five feet below ground level, and had three-foot-high walls around it. Both the walls and floor of the pool were composed of precisely cut and well-fitted stone. Archaeology reports that “Inca ruler Huayna Capac had concluded a 10-year war of conquest against the local people, the Caranqui. Legend has it that Huayna Capac had every adult male Caranqui executed. Their bodies were thrown into a lake known today as Yahuarcocha, or the ‘Lake of Blood,’ on Ibarra’s northeast edge. Spanish chronicler Pedro Cieza de León estimated the conflict left 20,000 to 50,000 Caranqui dead.”
Archaeologist Bray and Echeverría think that in the aftermath of that bloodshed, the Inca built the pool as part of a construction project that was meant to demonstrate their power to their new Caranqui subjects. The ceremonial pool would have represented a considerable investment of wealth and labor by the Inca. It also would have showed their skill as engineers by bringing water from as far as five and a half miles away and demonstrated their mastery over a resource with powerful religious symbolism.
Dubbed the Templo de Agua (the Water Temple), the pool outsizes other constructions by far. Stone canals would have circulated the water around the site, and stone steps at the corners allowed access to the water for ceremonies. The water was channeled from the slopes of the nearby Imbabura volcano, five miles away, via stone canals. It would then empty into the pool through spouts, and would finally drain through carved holes, writes Archaeology.

Colombia, Department of Cauca, in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Inza, in the “corregimiento” of San Andres de Pisimbalá
Date of UNESCO Inscription: 1995. GPS Location: - N2 34 60 W76 1 60
Explore this exciting site with photographer and documentary maker; Jonathan W. Alexander in this installment of the series; Mystic Places, Magical Mystery Tour- which takes you on a virtual video walk through of this difficult to access and rarely known mountainous historical area which is now a national archeological park in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Inza, Department of Cauca, Colombia. The park is located 100 km away from the capital of the Department, Popayán.
Tierradentro culture is related to the neighboring San Agustín culture which we will feature in yet another up-coming episode of; Mystic Places, Magical Mystery Tour..
The area is very well known for its pre-Columbian hypogea, which were found in several excavations, and are divided in many archeological places. some of them are: Alto del Aguacate (Avocado Hill), Alto de San Andrés, Alto de Segovia, Alto del Duende and El Tablón.
The typical hypogeum has an entry oriented towards the west, a spiral staircase and a main chamber, usually 5 to 8 meters below the surface, with several lesser chambers around, each one containing a corpse. The walls are painted with geometric, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic patterns in red, black and white. Some statues and remains of pottery and fabrics can be seen scarcely due to grave robbery before the hypogea were constituted as protected areas.
The pre-Columbian culture that created this funeral complex inhabited this area during the first millennium A.C. Tierradentro Archaeological park features hypogea dating from 6th to 9th centuries AD. The details in the sculptures and pictographic patterns are similar to the San Agustín culture.
The park generates significant revenue to the local economy due to the high volume of tourists, both Colombian and foreigners. These sites form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site was listed on the World Monuments Fund's 2012 World Monuments Watch list of 100 Most Endangered Sites.

Possibly Aypate would be an administrative center and the only Inca vestige found in the Piura region. It is part of the Inca Trail.
The structures of the site were built with stones.5 6 It is distributed sparsely within a radius of 2 km. The complex is made up of a concentration of main buildings and peripheral areas.
The first is made up of a terrace 500 m long and 300 m wide. The buildings are distributed around it. To the southeast are the enclosures associated with two squares for possibly administrative use. To the east, it would house a ceremonial center with a pyramidal trunk (Pyramid of the Moon).
The peripheral area houses domestic buildings and storage centers, as well as control buildings and main accesses.
Aypate has been declared archaeological capital of the department of Piura by the National Institute of Culture through R.D. No. 042-96 / INC-DP on May 26, 1996. Also, through Agreement No. 042-2003-GRP-CR of the Piura Regional Government, it has been declared a regional historical sanctuary and archaeological capital of the Piura region.
The archaeological site is in a vulnerable state in the face of the rainy season and the overload of visitors.
In the western part there is a cloud forest mainly of the species Hedyosmum sp., Miconia sp., Vallea sp. and Podocarpus sp. and secondary forest of species such as Myrcianthes sp. and Chionanthus pubescens. In addition, 67 threatened and endemic bird species have been reported.

Huayuri are the ruins of a vast pre-Inca settlement on the coast of Peru. It is estimated that it was operational between the years 1100 to 1476. The city was established by the Poroma ethnic group during the Ica Chincha kingdom. The ruins are located in the Quebrada de Santa Cruz, Province of Palpa, Department of Ica, near the Santa Cruz River.
Of the ruins, it is estimated that Huayuri had a population of about 5,000 inhabitants, and the ruins include various constructions among which temples, squares, administrative buildings are identified, all of them in a layout of narrow streets. The archaeological studies carried out indicate that it is probable that the city had its heyday after the Nazca culture died out and before the arrival of the Incas. The material found suggests that the site was also occupied by the Incas.
