Kromer Protector (Patent-Post-Kassetten-Eingerichte) Picked and Gutted WestLockPicking 2022-10-15 | This is the first video on youtube of this lock being picked. Due to accidentally revealing my face, the raw video is uploaded but unlisted - there is a cut at 48:13 due to this, at the end of the reassembly - the raw has been shared with a number of skilled pickers. There are no other edits.The tools used are a piece of custom tubing, a strong adhesive, 3 bent wires in the shape of a standard lever pick, and 2 deep hooks. A 2mm metal rod is also needed.The serial for this lock is 178926, indicating it was probably made in the 1910s (not certain). This model is called by Kromer as the "Patent-Post-Kassetten-Eingerichte", which roughly means a lock mounted on a lockbox (being less than 30mm in depth). It was often installed on tabernacles. It would typically have an actuating "band", but this is missing from mine. This particular one often requires multiple key turns to throw the bolt, but there exists an easy method to turn the lock multiple turns once it is in the open position. This model has 8 wafers, 3 less than the standard Protectors (though there exist models with as few as 6 and as many as 16 wafers). It makes up for the reduced wafers with tapered edges on the outer core, and by having false gated wafers, which are extremely difficult to deal with. Modern protectors do not have these features, and instead have other related challenges to solve (particularly the curtain wafer in the BP55K, but again this can be solved with slightly different picking wires in theory - however, most other later protectors simply have 3 more wafers (some split) at the cost of no tapering and no false gates, which in the cutaway I have I was able to defeat with the same method - as yet no luck without visible wafers, but the technical difficulty seems similar) - this method provides a framework for defeating them all, and since they all have the same hardened drill pin, it will work on all. A New Method for Impressioning and Decoding the ALC Bilock. WestLockPicking 2022-03-07 | A new method to impression the bilock. Requires a 3d printer, a thin pick, a tensioner and a lot of patience. Can be adapted for NG by using a removable interactive element and cutout in every printed blank, and can be adapted for exclusive if facepin heights are known. This defeat takes weeks at least to do (print times, etc) so this is a summary of the method. It cannot feasibly be demonstrated in a short format video.The method could be more reliable with a thinner pick (.3mm or so) and with a better key blank design (the current one allows for some forward play in the key depth, which is undesirable.
