Power Word SpillI built a D&D DM screen with a built-in player facing display, without using any power tools. This was a really fun DIY build, and I'm really excited to use this to run my dnd 5e games. I'm using OBS to run this GM screen, which offers a lot of really cool options for displaying initiative tracking, monster art, and lots more. I'll be using the display for setting the scene in different environments and for showing initiative while running dungeons and dragons fifth edition combat. This GM screen could obviously be used to run any TTRPGs though, including Pathfinder, OSE, etc.

These are seven free tools I use in every single Dungeons and Dragons session. There are way more free D&D tools that I use, so this will most likely be the first in a series! The most useful one for me has been the D&D Shop Catalog. I use this every session. I find it so useful to be able to pull up consistent prices for everything. I'm currently playing D&D 5e, but these can all be used for D&D 2024, or D&D 5.5, or whatever the newest one is called. Let me know if you use any of these, and what your favourites are!
If you don't want to wait for the rest of the series to come out, you can see the full list on Patreon at the $5 tier. Thank you so much to my Patrons, I really appreciate you! patreon.com/c/PowerWordSpill

We're making some props for a dark Dungeons and Dragons campaign! These are some cheap and easy props that you can use for any D&D campaign, but they especially fit in with a dark and gritty TTRPG setting. We're making a dice launcher crossbow, a Lich's lair skull dice tower, and a magnetic blood vial tracker. These props will spice up your table, and they were a ton of fun to make!

I've tested a LOT of different D&D map makers, and this is my new favorite one! I came across Canvas of Kings back in April, and I've really been enjoying playing around with it. I used this to make the maps for my Dungeons and Dragons 5e one shot, but you could use this to make maps for any medieval fantasy TTRPG. I love the look of the hand drawn assets (that are also very printer friendly) and the functionality of being able to fill large areas with different types of assets. The animations really takes this to the next level! Being able to screen record with animated clouds, snow, trees, smoke, and automatic lighting is so cool. Also easily having a day and night version of every map is great.

Reading a full length D&D campaign before running it takes too long, and shouldn’t be necessary. I’m proposing a “no prep” adventure and campaign format for Dungeons and Dragons, or any TTRPG! With this format, you can just read the first chapter, before the adventure, and be able to know the general layout of the story, which characters are important, and what information will lead the characters through the adventure. Let me know what you think! Would you like publishers to adopt something like this? Would this make you more likely to run a longer pre-written campaign?
To run the Divine Assassins adventure, just sign up for a trial of Legend Keeper, then download the .lk file from the google drive link. Then import the adventure into your account!

I made an NPC generator where you can completely customize what it shows you, and what it generates. You can enter your own data for it to output, and then you can choose if that custom data is mixed with the default data or if the generator should only use the custom data. This can be used to generate NPCs for D&D, or any TTRPG! You could even use it to help brainstorm ideas for a fifth edition player character (or Pathfinder or any other type of character). There are also options for choosing the name generation method that it uses, including real world names, or prefix and suffix name generation. The feature that I'm most excited about though, is the ability to regenerate just a specific part of the NPC. Maybe you like the name but want a different description? Just that section and it regenerates!

Once you play a game for long enough, you figure out what you like and don't like, and what's better your your group. I love fifth edition, but there's definitely a lot of room for improvement! I tested out 14 VTTs (virtual tabletops) to figure out which was the best one! It took WAY longer than I thought to test all of these, but it was worth it because I found a solution that is great for my D&D group. You can use these to play most TTRPGs, and I was pleasantly surprised with the support for other systems that a lot of these came with. All of them support Dungeons and Dragons 5e, most support Pathfinder, and quite a few either have generic mode or support a number of smaller systems. Are any of these new to you? Which are you going to try?

I've tried out a few different D&D dice box solutions, but I've always ended up with a bunch of different things loose in my backpack. So I decided to design and build my own dice box to carry all of my TTRPG things, making it as compact as possible in the process. I don't have a 3d printer, but I was able to get access to one. If you don't have a 3d printer, there are some great and affordable options out there. It was a surprisingly difficult process, but I'm very happy with the results!
Often times my D&D combat turns into a boring slog where everyone stands still and hits each other until one team dies. But I'm determined to change that! I've come up with five tips that I'm going to use to make my dnd combats for dynamic. These can be used with any TTRPG, not just dungeons and dragons fifth edition.

With the upcoming MCDM RPG getting rid of fixed initiative order, and Daggerheart getting rid of initiative completely, should D&D also get rid of initiative? I tried using the MCDM RPG initiative system in my fifth edition campaign, and it worked pretty well! I decided to explore the history of initiative in Dungeons and Dragons, to figure out how we arrived at the 5e system, and to figure out if dnd should move to a new initiative system with less structure around turn order.
I made modular D&D magic item cards that you can level up and swap out the abilities! I wanted to give my players some magic items that they could keep as they go through our campaign. Giving magic items to your players in dnd fifth edition that last through the different tiers of play can be difficult because they can quickly become underpowered. Having dnd items that you can level up helps them last longer. I also wanted to introduce some of my players to the modularity that's available with different classes, without overwhelming them. Having an item where you can change out abilities on a long rest can be a fun way to get a taste of the modularity, but having limited options keeps it from becoming too much. The items I made are designed for dnd 5e, but you could take this concept into any ttrpg!

Disclaimer: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.Build better D&D worldsPower Word Spill2023-05-08 | In this video I'm sharing a tip to help you build a better D&D world. One of the best things about D&D, or any TTRPG is the freedom to build your own world! Sometimes it can be difficult to know where to begin, how much history to write, and how much to prep. I recently finished reading the Fall of Numenor by JRR Tolkien (actually by his son's editor), and it got me thinking about my own world building, and where to begin. One of the big takeaways was that Tolkien started at the beginning, with the creation myth of his world. And that's where I think you should start writing your dungeons and dragons fifth edition world, the beginning. Starting with a creation myth in your dnd 5e world or pathfinder world can help you lay a strong foundation, that can help you make more logical story decisions throughout your campaign. No more BORING D&D sessionsPower Word Spill2023-04-29 | Are your D&D players not paying attention? You might need to work on your session pacing! There are two types of pacing, session pacing and campaign pacing. Session pacing is the flow of your session, and campaign pacing is how quickly you move through your story and advance your plot. Both are equally important! And getting them right is one of the hardest things to master as a dungeon master. I definitely haven't mastered it, but by changing the way I prep, and doing some little things while playing, I've managed to significantly improve the pace of my sessions, and prevent them from dragging on. Do you have any tips for improving pacing? Let me know down in the comments!

In my opinion, the most important thing is that the players are gaining information from the random encounters in dungeons and dragons. These encounters can be a wasted opportunity to share information about the current area, or other events in the world that may be going on in the background. It's always better if you can give your players information through dnd encounters rather than exposition. It makes for more interesting encounters, and makes each encounter feel unique! Or have you made your own dungeon master screen and then you're not sure what to put behind it? In this video I share what I have behind my screen. These apply to any TTRPG, but I most often play D&D 5e. The things I like to keep behind my dungeons and dragons dm screen are: scale and distance references, travel pace references, monster art, special rules (ie underwater combat), dice, name list for quick NPC names, random encounters roll tables, relevant character backstory information for the session, rules that I can't remember, and my computer!

The Blink spell in D&D 5e is typically used as a defensive spell, so you can blink out to the ethereal plane and be safe from attacks when it's not your turn. However, using reactions, you can also use it to make attacks. Some Dungeons and Dragons monsters can cast the Etherealness Spell, or have it as a feature so they can easily travel between the material and ethereal plane. If your GM uses this to have them make an escape, and you don't have access to plane shift or higher level spells, you can use Blink to prevent that!An EASY template for writing your FIRST CAMPAIGNPower Word Spill2023-02-12 | This is an easy template that you can follow to write your first TTRPG campaign! Writing a TTRPG or D&D campaign can be daunting task. This is an easy template that you can use as the structure for your campaign, that allows you to be able to break up your campaign into a series of smaller adventures, that are tied together with a single thread. This template is all about story, so it will work with any system including Dungeons and Dragons 5e (DnD), Pathfinder, Dungeon Crawl Classics, OSE. This idea isn't new, it has been used in TV, film, and many pre-written campaigns. But looking at it like a template, or story skeleton can be helpful in getting you started with writing your own campaign. Since it relies on your players' backstories, you could run this campaign multiple times and it would be different every time!A New Beginning | D&D/TTRPG Fantasy Writing Music - 1HourPower Word Spill2023-02-04 | D&D/TTRPG music for a new beginning, or a bittersweet beginning. 1 hour of looping music to play in the background while you play Pathfinder or any TTRPG.
