Here’s an easy two-row ripple crochet stitch — with one row worked entirely in double crochet, it’s simple to memorize and relaxing to make. This updated tutorial includes a small tweak for added texture. Whichever version you choose, the result is a gorgeous ripple perfect for blankets, scarves, and more.

Notes:
– Stitch multiple: 17 + 3 (example: 3 × 17 + 3 = 54)
– After your first row, your stitch count will always be the number of chains you started with, minus 3. For example, if you chained 54, you’ll end up with 51 stitches.
– Turning chain (or optional stacked sc) counts as the first dc throughout the pattern.
– For added texture, work every row in the back loop only (BLO).
– Peaks are made of 12 dc. Valleys are made of 5 dc with skipped stitches between each. Beginning and ending edges use “half peaks” of 6 dc.
– Tip: Work into both loops (instead of BLO) for the first and last stitch of each row to help anchor the edges.
🧶 Pattern:
Foundation Row:
Ch multiple of 17 + 3.
Row 1:
Dc in 5th ch from hook, dc in each ch across.
Ch 3, turn.
Row 2 (Ripple Setup): (work all stitches BLO unless otherwise noted)
– Half peak: 2 dc in same st as ch-3, then 2 dc in next st twice more (6 dc total).
– Valley: sk 1 st, dc in next st; repeat 5 times (5 dc total).
– Peak: sk 1 st, 2 dc in each of next 6 sts (12 dc total).
– Repeat valley + peak sequence across.
– End with half peak: sk 1 st, 2 dc in next 2 sts, then 2 dc in final st (6 dc total).
Ch 3 (or stacked sc), turn.
Row 3:
Dc in each st across (BLO). Ch 3, turn.
Rows 4 and Beyond:
Repeat Row 2 (ripple row), then Row 3 (straight dc row). Continue alternating until blanket reaches desired length.
