Licensing a song for a movie or a TV show is a good way of earning revenue as a musician. But how should that money be divided? That’s the question that’s answered in this video from Music Business Law for Artists, a 12-week Berklee Online course by Valerie Lovely. If the artist in question is a band, with some of the members being writers and others not, this is where accounting really comes into play. The division of revenue can also depend on the band’s internal contracts. For example, let’s say your band is licensing a song for $1,000. That sum will be divided into two categories: $500 for the use of your band’s sound recording, and $500 for the use of your writer’s composition. The composition revenue will be divided once again in two, one half being the writer’s share, and the other half being the publisher’s share. Assuming that the producer gets 20 percent (or $50) of each share, the rest of the writers share will be divided equally between the two songwriters, and the rest of the publishing share will be divided equally by the whole band. Now for the remaining $500 in the sound recording license, the money will be divided equally between the band members. But depending on the internal agreements and contracts, the band might have to give part of their share to the producer.

Bierylo, who wrote this course with David Mash, explains how a basic interface consists of one microphone input and an option to turn phantom power on and off, which is used when recording with a condenser microphone. Additionally, audio interfaces also have a line input commonly used for plugging in guitars, a knob to control levels, and a headphone output. On the back of the interface, you will often find a USB connector and two RCA outputs, the latter of which are less commonly seen in interfaces. The second model Bierylo introduces contains some additional elements such as two microphone inputs, one of them containing a neutrik connector that takes the XLR connector from different types of microphone cables. For these inputs, there is a level control knob, a 48-volt phantom power, and other additional controls that moderate headphones or speaker’s output. On the back panel of this second interface, Bieylo explains how there are several inputs and outputs that can be connected to monitor speakers and instruments. Additionally, this model contains “Standard MIDI Connections,” which allows the interface to serve as a MIDI interface as well. He has played piano since the age of four, attended fine arts and performing arts middle and high schools, followed by Berklee College of Music in Boston. Lacamoire is a Tony- and Grammy-winner, and he earned the Kennedy Center Honor in 2018. His most successful work was with the musical theater production of “Hamilton.” He was the pianist/keyboardist, conductor, musical director, arranger, orchestrator, composer, and music producer of the cast album. Using the final movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (commonly known as “Ode to Joy”), he explains that to switch to Write mode, press Command–2 (or Control–2), click on bar 1, and begin typing notes from your keyboard. Leonard, Jr. is a versatile producer, composer, and orchestrator whose works have premiered both nationally and internationally. His compositional credits span film, radio, television, and stage. As the video explains, removing an artifact like a cough takes a lot of trial and error. Going to the spectral repair mode in your plug-in, you’ll have the option to either replace or attenuate a sound. The replace feature will completely resynthesize your sound, and although this can be used in different settings, for the case of removing a cough, you should probably use the attenuate feature, as the replace feature can create unwanted artifacts. In the attenuate window, you can also change the specificity of the band you are trying to manipulate. Exploring the different parameters is a great way to get experience and give you a chance to see different results. By understanding how music evokes emotion, musicians can connect more meaningfully with their audience while also enriching their own appreciation of the craft. Our brains have different structures that receive signals from the nervous system, identifying speech, sound, and rhythm. Rogers explains how when we sing or listen to a song we like, the chemical reactions in our brain release dopamine, encouraging us to keep listening. The 26 videos of this course reveal why we like certain songs by analyzing perception across musicians and non-musicians, cultural influences, metrical structures, and tonality. All of these factors show that every emotional response is unique, as it also depends on internal and external conditions such as when (and with whom!) you are listening. Rogers tells musicians that our nervous system enjoys a balance between familiarity and novelty, explaining that pop music and hit songs tend to be liked the most because they generally contain a familiar aspect along with an innovative element. Music not only causes emotional reactions, but also automatic physiological responses such as chills, which are often correlated with unexpected elements inside a song. Rogers says that we are most likely to like a song when it meets our expectations, as our brains like to anticipate melodies or rhythms based on our memory of past songs. When we like a song, our brain creates a template of the type of music we tend to like, which we remember each time we listen to something new. This course emphasizes that music is used for bonding and can be an identification of culture and identity, providing a sense of belonging. With these teachings, Rogers hopes to help musicians deepen their appreciation for music and inspire them to innovate. Her research focuses on auditory memory, the perception of musical signals, and the influence of musical training on auditory development. For two decades prior to her science career, Susan was one of the world’s few women known for her work as a record producer, engineer, mixer, and audio electronics technician. Career highlights include five years (1983-1987) as staff engineer for Prince, producing hit singles for diverse artists such as Barenaked Ladies, David Byrne, Robben Ford, Jeff Black, and Rusted Root, mixing hit singles for an equally eclectic list including Tricky, Michael Penn, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Tevin Campbell, and engineering for a host more. This 23-video course (which also features special guest Alper Tuzcu) delves into the process of pre-production and production of a song, paying close attention to its structure, elements, and managing your DAW. When you first begin work on a song, it is important to think about duration, number of bars per section, repetition, and the possible modification of tempo and key. As you go from the preproduction process to the production process you’ll want to make sure your song has enough contrast in the melody, harmony, and rhythm. Uslusoy further explains how to use multiple features inside Pro Tools to program drum sets and bass parts and use MIDI pads to ensure a smooth production process. This course also gives you an overview on how to execute vocal comping, manually editing pads, quantizing notes, using parametric EQ band to adjust frequencies, and applying different reverb plug-ins to add special effects to your tracks.
