Often supported by wealthy, philanthropic benefactors, these institutions were tasked with creating impressive displays to show off their charity (and wealth). This meant the museums needed workers, and lots of them. So, to get those workers, they made training materials. By finally writing the process of jacketing and transporting fossils back to the lab, we began to have a solid foundation of techniques to build upon as the decades carried on. Beak-ing out of their Shells Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong 2025-05-25 | Ever notice how many groups of dinosaurs (and other archosauromorphs) evolved beaks? Well, there's some evidence from chicken embryos that hatching from eggs predisposed them towards it. Egg teeth are the hard bit on the snouts of hatchlings that they'll use to break the membrane and shell of their eggs when their ready to hatch. Lizards, snakes, birds, tuataras, and even some frogs all have some version of this. Gale, came up with quite the theory of how sauropods like Brontosaurus, Apatosaurus, and Diplodocus may have done so. Basically, he thought that they had gills, or something very much like them. Get Giraffes Outta Here! Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong 2025-04-06 | As sauropods grew to gigantic sizes, their neck vertebrae had to pull off some neat tricks to help keep the whole thing supported. And they did it completely DIFFERENTLY from giraffes. Other than both having long necks, the two animals are not really comparable. Giraffes breathe tidally, and control air flow by having a narrow trachea (for its size) to overcome the 'dead space' problem. Sauropods like Bronotsaurs, Apatosaurus, and Diplodocus used unidirectional, flow-through breathing through a series of air sacs to overcome it. Sauropods - Air Hulks Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong 2025-04-05 | Sauropods' sizes called for a lot of evolutionary changes to sustain it. Apatosaurus, Brontosaurus, Diplodocus, and even titanosaurs like Saltsaurus had to leverage several parts of their bodies to keep their bones from literally being too heavy to carry or move, like using air sacs around the bone for support! We've also found that their gigantic size may have had an effect on other parts of their bodies, like their breathing and osteoderms. They could only get so big if they breathed tidally, so instead they evolved a system of flow-through air sacs. It allowed them to overcome the 'dead space' problem even though their necks were incredibly long. We also have evidence that some species may have used their osteoderms to help give calcium to their eggs! This may have come about because their bones are already as light as they could possibly be, so they couldn't sacrifice even MORE of the calcium from them. Not even for their young. Dimetrodons Tail Little Bob or Long Whip? Or Something else? Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong 2025-03-30 | It turns out when a researcher only has part of a tail, there are many ways they can interpret how long the rest of it may have been. Dimetrodon was a source of debate between researchers due to the appearance of the caudal vertebrae found between different specimens. Did it have a bob tail because it seemed the vertebrae starting at the base got small very fast? Or was it's tail made up of many, many vertebrae that got very small over a much longer span? Making them fluoresce with UV light, infrared, even X-ray can reveal things we can't see with just our eyes. It's a great way to find new evidence about ancient animals that we couldn't before. Workers are even able to make discoveries about the colors of prehistoric creatures with techniques like spectrometry! Researchers can also hit a fossil with ENERGY BEAMS.
