Mt.Shasta Ski Park, which opened in California in 1985, was developed under bittersweet circumstances. A previous ski area had operated on Mt. Shasta before being destroyed by an avalanche in the late 1970s. While the new ski slopes were built in a different location, the historical presence of a resort in the area allowed developers to build on an existing foundation rather than starting from scratch.
Additionally, by focusing on a mid-sized, regional market rather than aiming to be a full-scale destination resort, @mtshastaskipark avoided the financial risks that have doomed many other projects.
