CWWR 492, a Fairbanks Morse H10-44 was built in 5/1949 for the Chehalis and Western Railroad, a subsidiary of the Weyerhaeuser company. Originally equipped with a Wabco B7 type horn on the side, the company equipped the unit with this exact E2-B3 in early 1953. The gaskets under all of the bells bear a date code of 1/53.
Made entirely of aluminum, this E2-B3 weighs only 25 or so pounds, and features bells B-7-30, E-44, and B-7-36. The highest pitched chime horn in the E2B series, the bells play 300, 480, and 360 hz, respectively.
My friend Pete saved the horn before the unit was sold in the mid 1970's, and eventually scrapped in 1987. He has had this horn in his collection for the past 50 years. I am glad an exchange was made and this horn can be enjoyed for another 50+ years.

When I received the horn, it wouldn't blow due to a cracked diaphragm in the number five bell. Over 35 years of winters on the Northeast Corridor also wore out the diaphragm seats and every fastener was seized. I left the paint as is and replaced each fastener with an era-specific replacement.
I reference export series as this is one of the few AirChime M5's with both a date stamp, and a large serial number on the base of the manifold. the manifold also has a "Made in Canada" brass tag attached to it. unfortunately the bells are mixed between AirChime round base and Nathan AirChime round base. Only the #4 bell is a true AirChime / Burnett Power Saws bell. The rest of them are Nathan AirChime bells.
This horn was found in Brooks, Oregon earlier this year. It has a July 1951 date stamp and large serial number 729.
The #4 bell still needs some work in tuning.
This horn is one of my own creations and is not prototypical to my knowledge.

This is a 1980's era AirChime KB123 ship horn.
I built the horn out of a KB-262, or a KB-1, KB-2 and a 3L bell. The KB-1 is a regular AirChime 1L bell with a bronze power chamber. The KB-2 is a single 2L bell with a bronze power chamber from the M/V Estero, which was built in 1972. I'll make separate videos for the KB-262 (1L) and the 2L eventually. And the 3L bell was from an unknown ship, and it was missing it's original power chamber. I placed a regular railroad service aluminum power chamber on it, and used my one of one experimental ribbed AirChime bronze backcap on it to match the other two. I am in the process of casting a bronze AirChime power chamber. Maybe I'll make a video on that someday.

This is the most accurate and informative guide to AirChime J3 Snowplow Whistles on YouTube today. Featuring my late 1953 J3 Snowplow Whistle, this guide will help you decipher the details of early AirChime horns. The J3 Snowplow Whistle was introduced in late 1952, early 1953 as a lower air consumption model of the K3.
Utilizing the same notes as a K3- 311, 370, and 470 Hz, the J3 uses less air than the K3. This is due to the cast in restrictor in the manifold. The air passage is about 1/4 of an inch, even though the air inlet is either 3/8 or 1/2".
The horn also uses a single diaphragm and cushion ring setup, instead of the dual diaphragm and single cushion ring of the K series. Also of note, the J series has a slanted outer ring, along with a slanted inner diaphragm seat. The K series uses level / square rings and seats. Some photos of this detail can be seen in the second half of the video. There is also no diffuser ring in J horns. Later models had bosses for a diffuser ring, but they were never drilled to accept a cap screw to hold it in. The difference can be seen on the outside- later bells have a "fat" head, earlier bells have a "thin" head. This is explained further in the video. My assumption is that AirChime used the same casting patterns for later J and K series horns, but machined the diaphragm seats differently for both, and did not drill out the diffuser bosses. This J3 features a "correct" J #3 bell, with the number "3" facing the correct way on both sides of the bell. Later bells had only one "3" facing the correct way, while the other side of the bell had the "3" upside down or backwards.
The Smith Dennis Ltd. catalog has never been shown to the public before, and these three pages are a little sample of it. Thanks to Ryan Grantham for lending me his copy so I could scan and preserve it.

This is a former Elwood Belknap horn that was a compilation of parts. It originally had RS chambers on it, which were pretty worn out. I replaced them with a set of bronze tab back chambers, originally from another railroad parts built SU3L. The tag dates from 1959-1962, but the manifold is stamped 1974.
The square 48 bell dates through the mid 1960's, the square 37 through the late 1960's, and the circle 31 from mid 1956 and newer.
Here's a short video of my Nathan AirChime spanner back cap Nathan M3 horn. Ryan Grantham, the individual who sold me this horn said it best: "If you're going to own one M3, this is the one to have."
This horn has the extremely rare Nathan AirChime spanner back caps. These caps were only offered in the first year of production- 1950. In addition, the horn features "Pat. Pend." stamping all over the horn. This horn, along with all Nathan AirChime M horns, features 5/16" air inlets. According to Robert Swanson, founder of AirChime, they did this to make them wear out faster and sell more diaphragm sets. American ingenuity, am I right?

I knew the engineer and we had a proper chuckle after this.
Michael Muha expertly welded the power chamber mounting flanges and installed helicoil thread inserts where the original threads had corroded out. He also welded the foot of the 1L bell where it had cracked. The manifold was also repaired, welding about one quarter of it to creating a good mounting point. In addition, he removed six broken bolts and cleaned up the threads in the manifold for mounting the bells.
For the bell-power chamber connection, I went with 1 inch fasteners with a stainless steel nut on the end as per the original. Users of this horn would have saltwater-aluminum corrosion problems- the steel fasteners attaching the power chambers to the bells would rust through and the power chamber would end up in Davey Jones' locker. In order to fix that end users used longer than normal bolts to attach the power chambers to the bells, and added a nut to attempt to save the power chamber if the bolt rusted through.
I'm in the process of obtaining new power chamber-bell gaskets, and I have replaced the original bell gaskets to the manifold. New stainless steel bolts with anti-seize have been used for bell mounting.
I ended up not polishing up the chambers to a mirror finish because I want to keep some of the history on this horn. I am not going to repaint it either.
In the video, the 1L is blowing louder than the other two. I suspect this is due to a larger air inlet in the foot. Since the horn was configured with the 1L facing backwards, I believe that the larger air inlet was for a wider sound area. I have configured the horn all bells forward (ABF) to help with storage.

The three piece manifold is an original one, not a one piece that has been chopped up. The easiest way to tell them apart is that the "wings" on the two outer sections don't have metal webbing between them and the main part of the manifold. There are also separate part numbers for each of the three pieces.
These horns were used on Amtrak P30CH's, Turbo Trains, and the first order of F40PH's. Nowadays they can be found on some Metra locomotives in the Chicago, Ill. area.

I built this horn myself, using 1, 2, and 5 bells from various sources, and the supposed last 3 and 4 bells from Microprecision. I had Mike Muha of South Bay Horn Works (sites.google.com/site/southbayhornworks) fabricate the manifold block and drill the holes for the horn positions. I bent all the copper tubing to give the horn an "H5" look.
Blown on 120 PSI air from a 80 gallon tank.

The gentleman I purchased this horn from couldn't tell me the heritage of it, he said it was either ex-Amtrak or Chessie. The horn was sourced out of Ohio.
It really needs a tune, the 1L bell setscrew was loose after we took it off the locomotive.
