Synopsis:
It's a rocky day at the Coal Mine, as Scrooge McDuck is covering for a sick Jones the Steam and Ivor is bucking him along on his least favorite job...shunting! But when aftershocks, a loose truck, and an adventurous Old Warrior sends the coalslide on the mine entrance, it's up to the two begrudging teammates to dig deep and come to the rescue! Can the team save Betram? Can Ivor and Scrooge come to an understanding?

DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
Here comes a simple episode three years in the making!
The genesis for this episode was rooted in simplicity: As we were finishing up work on True Blue Teamwork in December 2022, I was considering some simpler episodes after taking in how fast turnaround for it ended up being. Animating a bit of stock footage for Little Engines sparked several ideas for a story; he's a character I'd long wanted to take center stage, and the Thomas Season 5 concept art drop at the time showing "rack rails" for their mines (mixed with Ivor's hatred of shunting) lit my imagination a bit. Our new friend Strip was even a result of working on that scene and these earlier ideas taking shape!
I approached Tipp with these ideas as I was working on the footage, who quickly bounced around several keystone ideas during those early development talks; incorporating Bertram and his love of adventure, and a plot being rumbling leading to a runaway truck and a mine chase. I had built the mine entrance for trucks and narrow gaugers, leading me to pitch Bertram going into the mine himself, the lost rack-rail line, and the big escape! By post-Boxing Day, Tipp had developed a full outline for the episode, with a first draft done just the day before New Year's!
With everything that was going on for the episodes in production at the time, it obviously took a while before the episode was properly placed into production. But one major change ended up coming about shook up the dynamic for the episode!
Originally, the episode was about Ivor, Strip, Bertram....and Jones the Steam! Jones would've been the calm against reckless Bertram and grumpy Ivor. But we ultimately realized that the lack of suitable resources would've made it unfeasible to make Jones a lead character.
So, when the time came to find a replacement...Tipp recommending Scrooge is what ultimately put the story into a whole other light! Going from cheering up an engine stuck on a job he didn't like to two stubborn individuals learning to get along in the face of adversity.
By July of this year, I'd completed the first draft of vocal refs; after I'd quickly built up the mine interior sets shortly thereafter, I'd assumed we'd get some extra help for the episode's animation...and in a total Tipp move, the legend ended up animating the entire episode himself within a month! That's right! Apart from maybe shuffling a few things around and a few minor things, this episode is 100% Pure TipperTopHat!
In a year in which I've been essentially forced to realize sometimes you gotta let friends help, seeing how incredible this episode came out and knowing we've got a HELL of a crew that can do amazing things (a HUGE team effort on Runnnin' Mainline Sunshine's special shoots being another good example) really lifts the world off my back. The credit I have for Tipp on this one is bottomless.
