Beauty is an essential part of any culture throughout human history. The aesthetic appeal of someone or something could not only increase the value of this person or object, but could denote power, prestige or in some cases perfection. Beauty, from an aesthetic and very visual point of view, can be defined by its ability to be pleasing to the eye, one that can inspire admiration and satisfaction. We like what we see and thus, we enjoy beholding that which our eyes perceive. The ancient Greeks were no different from us in this sense and it would be true to say that such ideals from the ancient Greek society (and possibly beyond) have indeed trickled down into our own. After all, it should come as no surprise that in a society where sculptures with bulging biceps, rock hard abs and strongly defined jaws were so highly celebrated that the ancient Greeks were really into their looks. In fact, it would be fair to say that physical appearance in ancient Greece was a pretty big deal and that their notion of what is attractive has certainly left its mark on us today.

🔎HASHTAGS #BookofEnoch #History #LegendsofHistoryHow Fallen Angels Corrupted Mankind With Forbidden KnowledgeThe Legends of History2024-03-10 | For believers, angels are usually seen within scripture as divine beings that protect, help and even teach humans. We see many examples of this throughout the bible, such as when an angel gives wisdom to Hagar, telling her to return to Sarai, her master or when the angels instruct Lot to leave Sodom and Gomorrah and never look back. For the most part, angels can be seen in the bible as delivering good sense, providing motivation or even indirectly saving people’s lives by either altering their course or nudging them in the right direction. You might say that what can be learned from angels isn’t any specific knowledge, but rather advice or merit that either brings believers closer to their god or helps them navigate or avoid an otherwise disastrous situation.
But what about those angels of a different variety… those who have not only betrayed their creator, but also taken it upon themselves to become involved with humanity’s affairs by educating them in dark arts, forbidden magic and the holy secrets of heaven.

It was the state religion of ancient Persia up until around the 7th century when it was dropped in favour of Islam during the Muslim conquest. There, Zoroastrian refugees, known as Parsis, fled from Persia to avoid persecution and emigrated to India where the practice of Zoroastrianism continued to survive. Even today, the practice of Zoroastrianism continues as a minority religion, with an estimated 200,000 worshippers worldwide.

🔎HASHTAGS #Zoroastrianism #TheLegendsofHistoryGods Kill Count In GenesisThe Legends of History2024-02-25 | Not for the first time have I seen The Old Testament God described as a God with a ‘dark side’. He is after all responsible for floods, plagues, famines and sometimes just outright genocide. However, according to traditional believers, it’s not so much the case that the Old Testament God is ‘trigger happy’ but that this more violent side is just another part of God, who like us, is multifaceted. Stephen Fry refers to God as ‘mean-minded’, ‘monstrous’ and even as a ‘maniac’ - blasphemous words indeed, but ones that do reflect the opinion those might have on a deity that destroys cities, spreads famine and diseases and at one point drowns the entire world. However, if we were to consult with the traditional believer, they might say that these actions are justified and that these acts are not ‘random vindictiveness’, but rather punishments owed to those who have done wrong.
On that note, in today’s episode, we’ll be analysing each and every time God snuffs someone out of existence and hopefully, we’ll have a more informed sense of what God’s final kill count looks like by the end of Genesis.

Like the Gods of the Greek Pantheon to the Ancient Greeks, characters like the Annunaki, Nephilim and Fallen Angels can be seen as a mirror to our own psychological, emotional and even spiritual traits, where often, despite being regarded as ‘above us’, they exhibit the same typical human responses, including compassion, jealousy, desire, love, curiosity, anxiety, creativity and hope. Indeed, many do believe that the government or the ‘powers that be’ already know this ‘truth’ and that aliens aren't just a concept that keeps some awake at night, but in actuality, something that our betters have known for generations. It comes as no surprise that many of a more religious inclination might turn to the bible for the answers and whilst for the most part, the bible remains silent on extraterrestrials or UFOs, there are some enthusiasts and scholars who propose that the Bible does contain ‘hidden’ references to encounters with beings from other worlds and seek to interpret certain passages as evidence for extraterrestrial contact.

The biblical story of David and Goliath is one of the most famous tales found in the story of the Old Testament. The narrative reflects our own individual struggle throughout life, not just necessarily from a religious point of view, but in a more human sense. We all have challenges to overcome and sometimes those challenges may dwarf us and seem impossible to defeat. Because of this, many are able to resonate with David - the poor shepherd boy who, equipped with just a sling and a stone, was able to successfully slay the giant Goliath and overcome his personal challenge in what was probably one of the biggest upsets in the valley of the Philistines. So taken are we by the courage, resolve and faith of David and how it might apply to us, that often, we might overlook the actual villain of which he deposed. Goliath.

His tomb, which lies within the Lintong District is famous for being guarded by the Terracotta Army, sculptures that are said to protect him in the afterlife. Perhaps it is these ancient guards that steer the modern archeologist away from these sacred grounds… or maybe, there’s something even more deadly inside... Ancient Chinese historian Sima Qian wrote about the emperor’s tomb and how both intricate and deadly booby traps were left inside. ‘Craftsmen were ordered to make crossbows and arrows primed to shoot at anyone who enters the tomb. Mercury was used to simulate the hundred rivers, the Yangtze and Yellow River, and the great sea, and set to flow mechanically.’
Some studies also indicate there is a higher concentration of mercury around the tomb, perhaps lending some validation to the chilling account.

The late mediaeval and early modern periods were marked by a widespread fear of witchcraft and the subsequent persecution of individuals, primarily women, who were accused of being not only ‘witches’, but those who went as far as to copulate with the devil himself. The "Malleus Maleficarum" played a significant role in promoting and legitimising such persecution. After being spearheaded by infamous inquisitors Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, the text, often referred to as the "Hammer of Witches," was used as a manual for witch-hunters, providing them with instructions on identifying, interrogating, and punishing witches in the 15th century.

Throughout the Medieval period in Europe, the concept of torture pretty much went hand in hand with everyday life. By today’s standards, living itself was it’s own torture when you consider the state of hygiene, the state of war and the state of politics with these jokers trying to outclass themselves as the worst kings ever. But if tuberculosis, the black death or being accused of being a witch weren't bad enough, the Europeans of the Mediaeval period thought, ‘gee, how can we make things even worse?’ So, they went ahead and thought up a range of brutal and gruesome torture methods, each designed for specific purposes and “perfected” during the height of when coming up with gory punishments was a peculiar pastime.

Gilgamesh is believed to be the oldest poem in the world - its very origins pre-dating the Iliad or even the Bible. The baked clay tablets in which the poem survives on, once lay buried in the rubble in sites across the ancient Near East, broken and forgotten. It wasn't until 1850 when these tablets were discovered and it would be another fifteen years before they even got the attention they deserved. In this series, I'll be retelling the Gilgamesh story in its entirety and whilst this endeavour will be entirely original, I will be drawing on inspiration from the translations by Andrew George and Stephen Mitchell to help illustrate what might be one of the most profound things I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

There are many names throughout history that invoke horror when spoken about, but one that sticks out in the minds of many is one Vlad Dracul the third- or more commonly known as Vlad the Impaler. Such a morbid nickname alone is enough to warrant some macabre thoughts about this figure, especially when you consider that the nickname was indeed a testament to how Vlad would deal with his enemies - by literally impaling them upon spikes.

🔎HASHTAGS #VladtheImpaler #HistoryWhat Happened to Enoch? | Book of JasherThe Legends of History2023-10-22 | Much of what we’ve seen here in the apocryphal Book of Jasher does not appear in the traditional bible, or at least, not in so many words. Here in chapter three of Jasher, the focus shifts onto one of the more elusive biblical characters in Enoch, who we know from the bible was a descendant of Adam and one who was taken from the earth by God in a less traditional manner. Indeed, Enoch’s role in the biblical Genesis is extremely minimal and for the most part, his contribution to the narrative is easily overlooked, for it is really confined to only a few lines.

It appears as a pale-faced nun, which not only serves as its primary disguise in the movies, but also becomes an integral part of its horrifying presence. Normally, one might associate a nun with innocence, purity and or even safety, but with this design, the visual connotation of the nun is hijacked and replaced with something far more menacing and evil. With this hijacking, those who are devout not only lose one of their more pious symbols of the nun, but are secondarily attacked by it.

We get the village of Halsingland, we get the creepy cult with its specific set of rules and traditions, we have Nordic symbols, ominous chants and the real life festival of Midsummer that was officially established by Swedish Parliament in 1952 to celebrate the beginning of summer. To any casual viewer, these might simply be tailored plot devices and cleverly designed literary props to create a more authentic feel to the narrative, and whilst that is undoubtedly true in some respects, in this episode, we’ll be investigating the potentiality of a real cult behind the festival of Midsummer and determining how much from the movie is Hollywood fluff, and how much of it emanates the darker side of Sweden.

This demon is traditionally depicted with the head of a donkey or a man that bellows fire, or something of a hybrid between a donkey and a lion. With the amalgamation of one animal that’s quite calm and otherwise friendly with another animal that’s beastly and can tear us to shreds, it does beg the question as to what kind of demon Valefor was - one we could feel at ease with, or one that could chew us up… Perhaps it’s a bit both, which gives the demon not only a complex personality capable of providing safety and harm, but also makes him highly unpredictable.

Judas’ reputation as a betrayer has cemented him in the minds of many as one of the worst people to have ever existed (or to have ever been created in literature). In Dante’s Inferno for example, Judas even has his own special place in the third lowest circle of hell, where he is placed head first into the maw of Satan, with his back continuously skinned by the devil’s claws. Ironically, this isn’t the only time Judas and Satan get this close, for it is in the bible we see Judas condemned by all four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and explicitly mentioned as the one who betrayed Jesus and the one who sold him out. Some are even convinced that Judas was so wicked in these acts, that he must’ve been working in tandem with Satan.

🔎HASHTAGS #Joseph #Potiphar #BiblicalStoriesThe Man Who Murdered Cain | Book of JasherThe Legends of History2023-08-16 | In the book of Jasher, Cain is portrayed in a more detailed and nuanced manner compared to the somewhat limited description provided in the canonical Bible. Of Cain’s fate in Genesis, we know that after killing brother Abel, he is marked and banished by God, which leads him to building his own city (which is named after his son Enoch). Beyond this, Genesis doesn’t give us much else in regards to the character of Cain. We don’t know what happens to the city of Enoch, we don’t know where it was located and most importantly, we aren’t told what happens to Cain after he’s completed its construction. The Book of Jasher seeks to fill these holes, telling us at the end of Chapter 1 that ‘In that time the Lord began to give [Cain] rest and quiet in the earth’, suggesting that God gave him respite in his banishment and allowed him to live a better life than readers of the traditional bible might’ve expected. But as the Book of Jasher shows us, Cain’s murder of Abel does not go unpunished and whilst Cain was allowed to live - whether as a wanderer or a builder, he was still struck down by the hand of another - a somewhat poetic end for the first very first murderer.

We are not told exactly what it was that they did here to offend the pharaoh, but there are those that believe that both men were under suspicion of plotting the king’s murder via poisoning, and so, were tossed into jail. When they arrived, the captain of the guard (likely Potiphar), assigned them both to Joseph, and he attended them.

Amongst these divine beings was the goddess Clymene, a goddess associated with fame, renown and the cycle of life. Though she is often overlooked in comparison to the more prominent goddesses, Clymene’s qualities as an Oceanid and her motherhood over some of the more famous Titans make her a character worth exploring.

The Genesis account allows for some suspense because subsequent to this, the story deviates to focus on Judah and Tamar, and how Judah, who’d suggested selling Joseph to the Egyptians in the first place, ends up with a bit of the classic karma treatment. By chapter 39 of Genesis however, the tale refocuses on Joseph and we learn that our young hero isn’t living too badly, considering his circumstances.

In this series, I chose to use the most accessible version of the Book of Jasher I could find as a basis for the narrative, which is translated from Hebrew and dates back to the year 1613. Whilst I did alter the language - most notably the dialogue of the characters, you’ll find that the framework and the story itself remains the same, as well as running mostly parallel to the events of the Old Testament. The Book of Jasher, known in Hebrew as ‘Sepir Ha Yasher’, is believed to mean ‘Book of the Upright’ or ‘the Upright or Correct Record’. What makes the book so controversial is that it was believed in some circles to be a lost book that is mentioned a couple of times in the bible, most notably by Joshua and David respectively.

🔎HASHTAGS #BookofJasher #HistoryThe Horrors of Possession | Explaining The ExorcismThe Legends of History2023-06-07 | Disclaimer: DON'T TRY EXORCISMS AT HOME (you know, just in case...)
When we think of exorcisms, it’s pretty natural for us to think about some poor soul strapped to a bed as they speak in tongues or give off a maniacal threat to those in attendance. We likely imagine a priest throwing holy water at the incapacitated man or woman who’s been ‘possessed’ by some demonic force and we can probably expect to hear that priest rolling off a dozen prayers as he aims a crucifix with all the confidence of a man holding a 12 gauge shotgun. Where does this imagery come from? Well, movies. It’s pretty much the only time many of us have ever seen an exorcism - in the movies. Often enough though, the exorcisms here become a showcase of a demon’s powers - a last ditch attempt by the demon to resist the priest by causing things to fly around the room or to suddenly use the force to splat people into walls. In other cases, it isn’t a person that’s possessed by a demon - it’s a place and that very dwelling is what is exercised as the demon is chased away. In movies like the 1973 Exorcist - which is arguably what set off our modern perspective of exorcisms, a combination of elements are utilised in an effort to banish the malignant spirit, including prayers, holy water and even logic. But in this traditional battle between the forces of good and evil, how accurate is it compared to the real exorcisms that are conducted in the world today? In today’s episode, we’ll aim to explore where the idea of exorcisms was hatched up from in history and how the ceremony has evolved over the years.
