Wankel engines have struggled to compete with piston cylinder engines, despite their many benefits and overall simplicity. Rotary engines have a long, growing combustion chamber as the rotor spins, making complete combustion difficult - not great for fuel economy. They’re also difficult to seal, and since you have multiple chambers at different stages of combustion, proper seals between chambers is critical. To help promote a good seal, oil is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber. All of this results in an inefficient engine with terrible emissions. How Steer-By-Wire Works - Tesla Cybertrucks Unique Steering! Engineering Explained 2024-05-10 | Steer-by-wire on a car means there is no physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels of the car. This is now a reality thanks to the Cybertruck, the first production vehicle in North America that uses this technology without a mechanical backup steering column. On a traditional car, when you rotate the steering wheel, this passes through the steering column to the steering rack, which moves the steering rack left or right, pulling on tie-rods, pivoting the front wheels based on your input. With steer-by-wire that mechanical connection is gone. When you turn the steering wheel, a sensor sees how much you turn the wheel, and a controller relays that message to the front steering rack, where an electric motor moves the steering rack based on your input, pivoting the front wheels. How V8 Engines Work (In 60 Seconds) Engineering Explained 2024-04-26 | V8 engines are universally praised by car enthusiasts. The idea is simple: two banks of four cylinders join together in a "V" to form a V8. Each cylinder is working to pull in air & fuel and eventually ignite it to provide the power stroke. This process takes two revolutions of the crankshaft for each cylinder, or 720 degrees of rotation. Since you have eight cylinders, you have a power stroke every 90 degrees of crank rotation, resulting in very smooth power delivery. Well unfortunately Tesla 0-60 times are a bit misleading. For example, Tesla shows a 0-60 in 1.99 seconds on their website for the Model S Plaid, or 3.1 seconds if you opt for the dual motor AWD Model S. But if you click “feature details” a box pops up, informing you that the Plaid’s time is with the first foot of rollout subtracted. But the standard S doesn’t apply this practice. So in reality, the Plaid’s true 0-60 is greater than 1.99 seconds, and the gap in performance between the two Model S’s is not as wide as it seems. And this is true for Tesla’s other Performance models as well. No one has raced with liquid hydrogen! The technology is awesome, as it allows for a lot more hydrogen storage versus gaseous hydrogen (stored at 700 bar). Here, the low pressure liquid must be kept at -253ºC, however, which is quite a challenge. According to Toyota, this project had three main challenges:1. Keeping the liquid hydrogen at a very low temperature.2. Maintaining the efficiency and capacity of the fuel pump.3. Controlling the pumped liquid hydrogen, as it converts to gas. We'll also discuss another issue that exist with hydrogen, which is how much space it takes up, despite having a better energy density by mass than gasoline. Unfortunately, the energy density by volume is quite a different story. However, the Client Specification version takes it even further with pioneering advancements.However, during the development process, the Light Speed Transmission (LST) was introduced in the acclaimed Jesko, which delivers unparalleled excitement and performance. “We could not resist exploring the possibility of incorporating these remarkable features and benefits into the Gemera production model, leading us down an exciting new development path — the Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission (LSTT),” explains Christian.To complement the engine and the LSTT, the R&D team has also developed the "Dark Matter" E-motor – an 800 hp, 1250 Nm patent-pending Raxial Flux E-motor that is an evolutionary leap in electric propulsion, representing the world's most powerful automotive-grade E-motor with 6-phase technology. One Dark Matter is now paired with the LSTT, instead of 3 Quarks E-motors with the Direct Drive system. This makes the drivetrain lighter, smaller, and even more engaging. The LSTT four-wheel drive system with four-wheel torque vectoring can be powered by either the 800 hp Dark Matter E-motor or the twin-turbo TFG, or a combination of the two, resulting in a maximum output of 1400 hp and 1850 Nm. The Client Specification Gemera not only retains its inherent qualities but also adds the lightness and responsiveness LST in the form of the LSTT. “We added 'Tourbillon' to the name of the LST, as this mechanism represents the automotive equivalent of a high-end Swiss watch and is simply beautiful,” explains Christian von Koenigsegg.Even so, we have yet another thrilling announcement—the Koenigsegg Gemera HV8 (Hot V8) version. The HV8 elevates the Gemera beyond any Hypercar or Megacar and takes everything to the next level. Before we came up with the LSTT, it was impossible to believe we could fit a mid-engined V8 configuration in the Gemera, given the large occupant space in comparison to the compact size of the Gemera.However, the layout of the LSTT allowed us to do it. To make it happen, we had to convert the Jesko V8 into a so-called Hot V8 where the exhaust exits at the top center, but otherwise, it is very similar to the Jesko engine. With this new engine configuration, the Gemera boasts an astounding 1500 hp from the HV8 in addition to the 800 hp provided by the Dark Matter E-motor, resulting in a total of 2,300 hp and 2,750 Nm of torque – a new world record for a production car. If it runs on gas, and has four strokes - yeah, you can run it! This leads to wildly different strategies within the world of endurance racing: small engines, large engines, turbo engines, naturally aspirated engines, V6 engines, V8 engines (you can even run rotary!), hybrid or not, the world of endurance racing has it all. It's fascinating to see manufacturers choose different strategies when it comes to powertrain, including the behemoth, 8800 RPM naturally aspirated 5.5L V8 engine used in the Cadillac V-LMDh. Endurance racing, however, is fairly complicated. This video won't get into the differences between IMSA & WEC, LMDh vs LMH, or the other dozen acronyms used in this fairly complicated motorsport. Critically, the reason for octane number differences will be explained, with both the chemical composition and the cooling effect of ethanol providing a large advantage. Finally, we'll look at real world testing to see how much more power ethanol can make, as well as the efficiency differences of E85 ethanol vs E10 gasoline. And if ethanol really is more efficient, then why do you get worse fuel economy using E10 vs E0 (gasoline)? The absolutely bonkers Demon is powered by a 6.2L V8 engine, which has a 3.0L supercharger, good for 1,025 horsepower and 945 lb-ft of torque when running on E85 fuel. Unfortunately, it's not all good news, as the 0-60 time isn't quite as good as Dodge claims, if you're the type of person that believes a 0-60 starts at 0 mph. The video will highlight all the details, and the many disclaimers that go along with this 0-60 time, as well as what the real 0-60 time is. In addition, we'll look at how important the vehicle's center of gravity is, and analyze the Demon in several different real world scenarios to discuss what the 0-60 times might be under various conditions. Regardless of any nonsense, the Dodge Demon 170 is genuinely an incredible feat of engineering. When the pistons reach their respective bottoms, fresh air flows in from ports at the bottom, while exhaust is rejected through ports at the top. That fresh air is squeezed into a small pocket in the center of the cylinder as both pistons come together, where finally diesel fuel is directly injected, igniting the mixture and creating the power stroke. This pushes the pistons out, and the cycle repeats itself. This all results in an engine that is small, power dense, and quite efficient. This saves weight, improves heat conduction for better cylinder cooling, and it means you can use larger cylinder bores with the same engine block. At low car speeds, the roof scoop remains smooth. At higher speeds, dimples bulge out, improving aerodynamics! The idea is much like a golf ball - a smooth ball has the airflow detach early and creates a large wake. A dimpled ball creates many turbulent air pockets, which allow the flow to detach later, reducing the wake. On the Bugatti, the dimples poke out instead of in, but the effect is similar. Today, some 10 years later, the rotary engine is making a comeback. This new rotary engine has been adapted to meet the needs of our times and is now being used to generate power rather than as a drive unit.While the 13B Renesis engine used on the RX-8 was a 654 cm3 two-rotor engine, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV uses an 830 cm3 single rotor format for the rotary engine generator. With a 120 mm generating radius (R) and 76 mm rotor width, its compact size enables coaxial placement and integration with the electric motor, decelerator and generator to achieve a unit with an overall width of less than 840 mm that fits on the same body frame as the MX-30 BEV. We also successfully reduced the weight of the engine by over 15 kg by using aluminium for the side housing section of the engine structure instead of the iron used on the Renesis engine.The main contributor to increasing fuel economy and reducing emissions on the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV rotary engine was the use of direct fuel injection. When fuel is injected into the ports on a conventional rotary engine, a lot of the air-fuel mixture ends up at the back of the combustion chamber, not fully combusting and eventually being expelled as unburned gas. This has a negative effect on both fuel economy and engine output.The rotary engine on the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV uses direct fuel injection, making it possible to distribute the air-fuel mixture to the main combustion area and achieve more efficient combustion. Additionally, direct fuel injection atomises the fuel at the time of injection making it possible to sufficiently vaporise fuel even at lower temperatures. This also helps prevent the injection of excess fuel.The engine also adopts an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system to improve fuel efficiency. Adding an EGR system that operates mostly at low rpm and low loads improves fuel economy by preventing cooling loss caused by rotary engine combustion chambers having a greater surface area than those of a reciprocating engine.Apex seals are attached to the tip of each rotor to ensure the combustion chambers are airtight. For the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, we increased the width of these seals to 2.5 mm to improve wear resistance. We also changed the plating on the trochoid surface inside the housing to reduce wear and frictional resistance. They did this by optimizing everything about the car for efficiency: aerodynamics, weight, rolling resistance, and powertrain efficiency. It even has some solar panels for a little extra juice! Were they able to achieve nearly double the range of today's EVs? Mercedes EQXX AssumptionsFor the energy consumption vs speed plot (flat ground, constant speed) an assumption is made for the electrical consumption of the vehicle at 250W. This value was chosen because Mercedes claims the solar setup on the EQXX is capable of generating (rough average) 25 km of range in a day. With an efficiency of 8.3kWh/100km, and knowing we get 25 km of range in a day from solar, we can divide 8.3kWh by 4 (25km = 1/4 of 100km) giving us a daily production of around 2 kWh from the solar system. Let’s assume 8 hours of good daylight, so 2kWh/8hr = 250W.
