My 91 350SDL developed a bad knocking sound under the car when moving off from a stop. After taking the driveshaft out I think the front u-joint has failed, which caused the front carrier bearing to fail.
The carrier bearings and brackets were replaced 20,000 miles ago, and do normally last longer than 20k as the rear one shows.
My friend car2069 knows of a good driveshaft repair shop from his time as an airport mechanic, hopefully they can replace the failed parts without too much expense. Mercedes still has some of these driveshafts in stock, but they want $1100 for them.
