Menton sits at the eastern edge of the French Riviera, sharing a border with Italy and enjoying one of the sunniest microclimates in France โ warm enough to grow the prized Citron de Menton, a fragrant local lemon with PGI protection. The town was acquired by the Grimaldi family of Monaco in 1346 and remained under Monรฉgasque rule until 1861, when its residents voted to join France. The Basilique Saint-Michel Archange was elevated to minor basilica status by Pope John Paul II in 1999. The Cimetiรจre du Vieux Chรขteau, sitting atop the ruins of the medieval castle, offers panoramic views across the bay.
