It’s part of the food economy you rarely hear about. Every year in California, billions of pounds of perfectly edible food, much of it coming from big supermarket chains, gets dumped into landfills instead of being used to feed hungry people. All that food rotting away in dumps also contributes to the climate crisis by releasing methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere.

To tackle both hunger and the climate crisis, California has set ambitious goals to reduce food waste. Critical to those efforts are groups like FoodCycle, a Los Angeles non-profit that partners with supermarkets to save edible food from being discarded and redirect it to communities who need it most.
