Introducing 2025 Astronaut Scholar Alara Berkmen from the University of Southern California!
Alara is pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering (Molecular-Cellular) and works under Dr. James Amatruda at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles as a CIRM COMPASS Fellow. She is aiming to establish a zebrafish model to compare primary and post-metastatic cell lines for Ewing sarcoma (EwS), a rare disease primarily affecting children, adolescents, and young adults. They want to harness this model to elucidate cell-intrinsic and tumor microenvironment factors responsible for their metastatic behavior.
The University of Southern California Astronaut Scholar Award is sponsored by The Leslie Way ASF Fund Mark Doll, Carol and John Tyler.
