Do we have a self at a certain place in our brain, something that does the experiencing? Modern neuroscience shows that it's more the networking in the whole brain that is our consciousness.

In the past, idealist philosophers thought that consciousness is an ideal part of reality. Marx did not accept that, he thought that pure self-consciousness, able to be aware of its existence wholy independantly of it being in the material world and and in society, is fiction! He said that man created himself in the process of social labour, and that it can be said that nature is humanized nature and consciousness is the way nature has self-knowledge. I think he was thinking in an evolutionary way.
