Hundreds upon hundreds of deep-sea creatures have been spotted in a recent expedition off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago. The expedition was carried out this summer from the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s R/V Falkor (too), and led by a team of Caribbean scientists.
It focused on the region’s cold seeps – regions of the ocean floor where fluids rich in minerals bubble up from the crust.
As you can see, these unusual conditions foster some very unusual ecosystems, including ghost sharks, zombie worms, crustaceans, rays, cephalopods, and a bunch of suspected new species.
