🏛️ *ABOUT MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS*
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Mammoth Hot Springs sits atop a massive underground hotspot that pushes
superheated water through limestone bedrock, depositing travertine at a rate
of up to two tons per day. The result is a constantly shifting landscape of
terraced pools in shades of white, orange, and brown — colors produced by
heat-loving bacteria called thermophiles. Liberty Cap, the dormant cone at
the base of the terraces, stands 37 feet tall and formed over thousands of
years from a single vent. Minerva Terrace is one of the most photographed
formations in the park, though its appearance changes dramatically year to
year as water flow shifts. The entire terrace system is part of the larger
Yellowstone supervolcano — the same geological force that powers Old Faithful
and the Grand Prismatic Spring.
