I thought I would make a wooden mallet from a log, I don't know what you would call it: woodworking, chainsaw carving or bushcraft. Either way, I found this wood project a lot of fun.
The woodworking mallet was made using River Red Gum Trees (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). In Outback NSW. Australia. It is a hardwood tree. I attached the mallet head to the handle using a hardwood wedge (Tasmanian Oak)
The old fallen logs where I am getting the wood from are to be used for FIREWOOD, so basically, I am saving these few small bits of wood from becoming firewood.
It was definitely not a hand tool project, but I did use a traditional hand tool technique to cut the mortise for the handle and did quite a bit of filing of the wood. The chainsaw did most of the hard work for me.
I totally enjoyed making the mallet, a bit of timberwork and chainsaw carving. I had a great time.
I can't stress enough, chainsaws are dangerous; you should get proper training and use all the personal safety protection equipment. I am definitely not a good safety role model. Be safe, people.
