Following last week’s detailed walk-through of Travis McHenry’s Hieronymus Bosch Tarot, I’m continuing my exploration of his fascinating catalogue with another deck that takes a very different approach to tarot.
In this video, we’re taking an in-depth look at Magicians, Martyrs & Madmen Tarot, published by Rockpool Publishing. Rather than depicting traditional archetypes alone, this remarkable deck brings together an extraordinary cast of historical figures whose lives embodied mystery, sacrifice, vision, rebellion and, in many cases, controversy. From celebrated occultists and saints to misunderstood visionaries and those branded as heretics or madmen, each card invites us to explore the stories behind the symbolism.
We’ll journey through the entire deck, examining the artwork, discussing the historical personalities represented, and considering how their lives deepen the meanings of the traditional tarot. I’ll also share my thoughts on the production quality, the companion guidebook, and whether this is a deck best suited to collectors, history enthusiasts, or readers looking for something a little darker and more thought-provoking.
