I'm grateful for the people I've met along the way and hope to stay in contact with you all.
But for the time being the world is just too much to deal with. It's time for a break. Focus my energy on enjoying the music creation process again and then... Well... I guess that's a bridge to cross when I get there.
Have a great day

When it comes to FM synths there's a fair bit of choice but one synth that really gets nice and hands on is the Korg Opsix (an alternative would be the Twisted Electrons MegaFM, but I strongly dislike mini-sliders). And the Opsix does a lot more than just FM, so it seemed like a good flexible option.
Let's dive into it! Part 2 will focus on modulation, sequencing and the virtual patchbay.

It's a bit of a shame there's no option to add/replace sounds without previewing them. If that was possible this could be a pretty perfect performative ambient synth :)

There's no point to me trying to deny I'm not a bit of a control freak. I like it when things have neat little labels and numbers and deep controls. So why oh why are we looking at Dawesome Abyss, basically the polar opposite of a deeply controllable synth?
Because it's never a good idea to get too comfortable with things. Sometimes you need to take a bit of a risk. And not like a "go to a foreign country with no plan at all" levels of risks. Oh no that's way to much for me. Just "checking out a synth with very few direct controls" levels of risk. That I can manage ;)

Here's a quick tip that I use a lot when I need to manage quite sounds and fades. Where technically some gates have setting for this sort of thing as well I find it more easy to dial this in with ZIP due to the interface and the way it reacts to sounds crossing below the threshold. This is always my go-to tool for gating snare (even though it's not a gate) and for taking care of lingering reverb.

(And before someone says it: no this is not due to the focus ring slipping, I forgot to mention this in the video)
I think it's about time that happened.
Overall the JD-XA is not a bad synth by any means. It has lots of parts, lots of voices, a lot of creative tools. Per part sequencing, CV/MIDI out, per part FX. There's a lot to like. But the one thing that really kills it all for me is the workflow and the lack of creative routing.

Honestly the comments where a lot milder than expected. Thanks for keeping it (mostly civil).
In this video I go over a bunch of comments and I want to emphasise (once again) that there's a "probably" in the video title. There are tons of valid reasons to stick with specific hardware, but in general if you are starting with music right now... it's probably (notice the "probably") not a good idea to get invested in this stuff. And yes before someone comments it (yet again): that is an opinion. Feel free to disagree.

I think everyone should buy the gear they deem to be the right for what they do. I just want to warn you about the downsides of buying old digital synths so you can better decide whether or not it's right for you.

There are many videos on the topic of budget music production but I feel like a lot of them miss the mark on the "budget" part. Where a few hundred bucks for some people is "pretty budget", there's a large percentage of the world where that's still considered to be a lot of money.
So let's talk real budget. Heck.. if you play your cards right on the software side of things you can get that budget as low as "not spending any money". That's the level of budget we want to hit.
Grab a cup of tea, coffee (or if you are watching at night: wine, beer or a cocktail of choice) and join me on a ride on true budget lane.

So here's a thing that has puzzled me about the MioXL.
There clearly is Program Change preset change functionality. But... it seems to be really specific in how it wants to be addressed. To me this seems weird and also: if you would want to use this in a live/dawless setting this limitation is a total none-starter.
So I hope I'm wrong about this.
In my search to make a system where I only need to route things once I came across several MIDI routers but ultimately picked the mioXL. Was it the right choice? Time will tell. But until that happens let's just take a look at what this unit does and doesn't do.

Myth is in a sense a traditional subtractive synth but with some very interesting twists. The IRIS engine, per voice FX and a legion of MPE capabilities make this a very interesting synth with a lot of range. So let's check it out!

I'm not a big "found sound" recording person. I don't think you'll see me wandering in the streets with a recorder and a blimp any day soon.
But having a nice recorder is useful never the less. It allows you to more flexibly record audio even when there's no PC around. And the H6 Essential offers quite a lot in recording capacity. 4 XLR/Jack inputs + the on device mics can record at the same time in 32bit 96 kHz mode. And with the separately sold EXH-6e you can bump this to 6 tracks of whatever you like.
My personal use case is a bit weird. I want to be able to move the recordings from the attic downstairs without having to mess with a NAS or network transfers or any of that stuff. I just want to hit record on a device, hit record on my camera and when done take 2 cards downstairs and start editing. That's a flow that just works better for me.
Because there's not a lot of H6e footage on YouTube I've made a selection of weird test hopefully covering the most common use cases for this device.

You get Battalion. A deeply tweakable drum synthesizer with tons of modulation and sequencing.
I would definitely class this as a "tweakers" VST as the amount of controls is amazing but can definitely be overwhelming for the people like me that are less versed with drum computers.
