I love just jamming on the kit, but the thought of playing a solo for the purpose of "impressing" people terrifies me, because I'd much rather play along to music and riff off that. I'm really self-critical, so the thought of having to play a "flawless solo" with zero mistakes is kind of paralysing, it's difficult for me just to have fun when I'm more focused on not making mistakes.That's the primary reason why I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that I mess up in this video. And right at the end too, haha! It keeps my ego in check. I find that I only stress about not making mistakes when my goal is to impress people, when my goal is to use drumming to prop up my ego. But when I'm free from that pressure, when I give myself the freedom to make mistakes, when I accept that mistakes have absolutely zero meaningful impact on my life, then it actually makes everything SO MUCH MORE FUN. Weirdly enough, the vulnerability to be ok with mistakes actually makes it MORE powerful and enjoyable, not less. What a weird paradox. Man. This band. Love 'em. But these short sentences. Hate 'em. Ok I'll stop.I was lucky enough to hunt down a drumless version of this song, which made mixing this so, SO much easier. Drumless versions are super rare (I usually just do drum covers with the normal full-band mixes that everybody else has access to) but when I do get one, it makes it possible to really crank the music and the drums still sit really nicely in the mix. Stoked with how this one turned out.Playing wise there's not too much going on here, I stayed mostly consistent with the drum parts, except for a few fun patterns here and there. The double cymbal grab at 1:29 might have been my favourite part of this video to play, and the linear fill at the end of the verse was super fun too. Hertas and cymbal grabs. These would be my first time ever "playing drums professionally" in the country where I was born, where I started playing drums, and where I started recording drumming videos. I called my good friend Howard (a great filmmaker and a spectacular human being), told him about this, and asked if he would be interested in finding & telling a story within this weird set of circumstances.Howard excitedly agreed, found a story, shot it, and masterfully produced this short film. More than anything, he captured how this crazy drum cover/social media story of mine has reached so much further than I ever planned or anticipated, that it certainly changed my life, but that so many things are also still the same.This is an ode to creatives, dreamers, immigrants, musicians, those who feel like they don't quite fit in, the passionate ones, the introverts.If you've found even a shred of entertainment or inspiration from any of my videos, then this story is just as much yours as it is mine. Holla!For everything else:http://www.patreon.com/cobushttp://www.instagram.com/cobuspotgieterhttp://www.facebook.com/deedlebagI know drummers obsess over the mix in review videos (and rightfully so) since it's quite tempting to get a stylised or "better than real life" mix of a drum or cymbal by removing some overtones. The mix you hear in this video is mostly overheads and room mics, to get as natural a sound as possible. I did use some of the close mic on the snare for body and punch, and it is slightly EQ'd, but mostly just to get rid of the proximity effect. Some drummers/engineers think that if you leave all the mic levels even and unequalized/compressed it would be the most natural sound, but if you think about it, the mics are right next to the drums, and our ears never are. So it takes a little bit of mixing to get it to sound natural and organic, which is what you hear here. Light compression on the room mics and snare close mic, and some multiband compression on the overall drum mix. This snare really sounds this sharp and "shotgunny".
