I am hoping that the many followers of Chopin's music will forgive me for slightly amending one of Chopin's most-loved preludes in a videotaping that I am just now uploading to my Youtube site. I am referring to Prelude No. 4 in E minor.
I spent literally months listening to every version I could find through the Web, including Jimmy Page's performance of the prelude in the 1970's. Jimmy Page bypassed the ending which a contemporary of Chopin's (von Bulow) called "Suffocation" and I decided to do the same at a time when our world is looking for messages of hope.
That explains why I chose to highlight the "blue note" (C7) that occurs in the fifth last bar. In that one bar Chopin was a century ahead of "Rhapsody in Blue" and that is the direction that I went for the remainder of the prelude. My version ends with the E minor chord but the chords leading up to it come from George Gershwin's world.
The modest few who listen to my version will hear a message of hope that hints at better times to come. I think that is what we need to hear at this time and I apologize to Chopin purists for amending the final bars.
I just went through roughly three weeks of self-isolation in my cottage cabin at Bala, Muskoka, (18 days and 17 nights), alone with my Bible and laptop, and have some idea of what it is like to look for hope in our current situation. It was during that time that I conceived the idea of the videotaping and to make it a message of hope.
I am probably best known as a ragtime performer in both Canada and at least two American ragtime festivals, but I have also recorded two gospel CD's.THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE CD AND BOOKJack Hutton2020-02-27 | Jack Hutton has just done a small re-run of a 1999 CD that pays tribute to a Canadian tune, The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise, and its two composers, Ernest Seitz and Gene Lockhart. He and his mother, Sue Hutton, have raised thousands of dollars so far for young people at Regent Park and elsewhere.
Here is Kai playing "Down By The Riverside" on Sunday, June 2nd with the Regent Park School of Music Wind Band. His concert ranged from Queen Rock Band classics to Dave Brubeck and Mozarts's "Turkish March". Time ran out before he played "Maple Leaf Rag". It was truly a virtuoso performance!

William Carr, an early Bala resident, later built Carr's Ice Cream Parlour on the church side of the Bala North Falls. It happened Saturday night, September 2nd, when Jack Hutton and Friends played an entire evening of forgotten Canadian songs to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada. The program ranged all the way from When You And I Were Young, Maggie (1866) to Moe Koffman's Swingin' Shepherd Blues and Bobby Gimby's CA-NA-DA which became the toe-tapping anthem for Canada's 100th birthday in 1967. It was a night of miracles because the musicians (Brian Bauer on clarinet, soprano sax and tenor tax, Bob Livingston, trombone, Will Wilson, guitar and banjo, Ric Giorgi, string bass, and Jack Hutton, piano) were playing many tunes for the very first time with the briefest of rehearsals. But it all came together, thanks to an audience that started applauding before they had played a note.a magic Segwun cruise with Stan and Conchita Meek jack hutton videoJack Hutton2017-08-28 | The 130-year-old RMS Segwun helped to celebrate the 80th birthday of Stanley Meek on August 23, 2017 with a 3 1/2 hour evening cruise and music provided by Jack Hutton's All-Stars. Jon Seiger, regarded by many as the world's finest Louis Armstrong performer (both on trumpet and vocals) drove from Rochester. Brian Bauer, a virtuoso on clarinet and every saxophone known to man, came from Buffalo;. Tony Quarrington, one of Toronto's finest guitar players for decades, came up from the city. Jack Hutton, who organized the group, came with his piano from Bala. Stan and his wife Conchita hosted the evening cruise with approximately 25 friends. Jack played the first chorus the way Waller did in a laid-back 1943 recording. Neville jumped in for the second chorus with up-tempo Bob Zurke improvisations, followed by a bagpipes riff. No one looked more delighted by the instant lesson than Jack who played the bagpipes riff later on that same evening. Jack says he learns from Neville every time he sits down opposite the English stride legend. That's what makes the Alexandria Bay festival special year after year: musicians learning from other musicians.HELIOTROPE BOUQUET played 2016 by Jack at Alexandria Bay,N Y Jack Hutton videoJack Hutton2016-06-04 | This was the final Scott Joplin composition played by Jack on the last night of the Grand International Ragtime/Jasstime Festival at Alexandria Bay, N.Y. (May 27-29, 2016). Jack devoted two half hours to early ragtime, concentrating on Joplin. Louis Chauvin, a ragtime genius who died in his mid-20's, composed the first two themes. Joplin added two of his own and created one of the most haunting ragtime compositions ever written. Jack's Arpin-like playing turns Heliotrope Bouquet into a prayer that features Chauvin's gossamer chords and Joplin's melodic directions. Next year (2017) will be the 100th anniversary of Joplin's death on April 1st, 1917.A KISS TO BUILD A DREAM ON Alexandria Bay , N Y Jack Hutton videoJack Hutton2016-06-01 | A KISS TO BUILD DREAM ON was one of the many highlights of the weekend Grand International Ragtime/Jasstime Festival at Alexandria Bay, N.Y., Friday, May 27th, to Sunday afternoon, May 29, 2016. This solo led off the second half of a Christmas cantata.
I had the honour of videotaping Ali's solo on Friday, Dec. 11th, at the First Muskoka Congregational Church and I am one of her biggest fans.
Notice that Ali has no music in front of her. That is because she does not read music in the normal way. She listens to music and sees the notes and the chords in her mind as a series of colours. When she starts to sing, she is off in a world of her own.
Many predict that Ali Power will be a well-known performer across Canada in just a few years.
I am one of them.
JACK HUTTON, BalaMuskoka Advent Choir WOW gospel quartet 2015 Jack Hutton videoJack Hutton2015-12-13 | The Muskoka Advent Choir has been captivating pre-Christmas audiences for the last two decades with performances that often bring listeners to tears. The miracle is that most of the singers do not read music. They have only six rehearsals to master cantatas that would intimidate professionals. Here is a video of four members of this year's choir performing a Gaither classic, Mary Was The First, as a gospel quartet, backed up by the full choir.
As the guy who did the videotaping, I will confess that I am one of the biggest fans of the Muskoka Advent Choir. I know many neighbours and friends who sing in the choir and most of them have no idea of how to read music. After only six rehearsals, they bring audiences tears with seven concerts across Muskoka, including one federal prison. Linda Ellison has done a wonderful job of stepping in as the new musical director and I applaud her. Enjoy -- and Merry Christmas!

Almost at the last moment, she accepted the challenge of filming the July 18th Jack Hutton and Friends concert at the Gravenhurst Opera House. Jack Hutton's hope was that Anisa could provide some video clips for Youtube. She went far beyond that, with the help of her older brother, Keldon, who videotaped the 2-hour concert from the rear. Anisa did close-ups from the front and also on stage, which she wove into a mini-documentary. It took her almost two months but she has created an instant jazz film classic that will be around for a long time. I'm not ashamed to say I'm prouder of this collaboration with Neville Dickie than anything I have ever played or recorded before. We were playing together at the Grand International Ragtime/Jasstime Festival at Alexandria Bay, N.Y., May 23-25.
We had never played together before, but we are both great fans of what Willie "the Lion" Smith and Don Ewell played in their classic 1960s duets, and especially their 1945 recording in Toronto. That's why I introduced "I Found A New Baby" with the same intro that the Lion used on the Toronto recording. Neville picked up on it immediately! What you are hearing here are tapings from two different sessions. The first was on Friday night, with me (Jack) on the left. The second, a much more relaxed but more upbeat version, was Saturday afternoon with our positions reversed. Our joyous antics deserve to be shared far and wide because echoes of both Willie and Don Ewell can be heard in what we play. Neville was gracious enough to step back when I attempted Don Ewell's semi-classical solo. The delightful thing about our weekend-long collaboration was that we never played anything the same way twice and that is true of these recordings! I will be forever grateful to Neville for a highlight of my entire life, and to Wayne and Nancy Paul for arranging it!!
