And due to that nostalgia, I needed to know whether the first season of Shokugeki was actually well-directed, or if I had been befuddled by high impact moments, a compelling storyline, and a truly executed soundtrack. The Thematic Duality of Fireworks in A Silent Voice Replay Value 2020-03-31 | A Silent Voice, directed by Naoko Yamada, has many of the visual traits that I've come to appreciate from her work, especially when it comes light. Clair de Lune - A Thematic Journey Through Anime Replay Value 2019-10-07 | As I've had some serious writers block - I decided to challenge myself to edit a "thematic evolution" without using the same anime twice in the video. Clair de Lune's been a mainstay of my listening while I've been trying to write, so I figured it was an appropriate song - especially as its able to convey so many emotions. Most of the edits here were done intentionally --- some of the more head-scratching ones are due to the aforementioned self-imposed challenge --- but in almost all cases there is a rational behind why each shot is placed where it is in sequence, either because of what it says about the shots preceding and following it, or because of how it transitions us to the next "thematic" exploration. This was maybe the most difficult video I've made in two years but it was also extremely rewarding, so I hope you enjoy. I didn't include a lot of "older" anime (read - 4:3 aspect ratio) because I didn't want to swap between the two aspect ratios. Future "Thematic Journeys" will not have this silly requirement, in fact if I ever do the follow up that this was a "warm" up for - it'll be a requirement in and of itself. The Greatest Opening Minute in Anime - Steins;Gate Analysis Replay Value 2019-08-07 | If you saw the previous version of this video, feel free to skip to 4:48 for the Japanese Dialogue Analysis. What you need in your premiere episode is to give the viewer something to hook into, whether that be in the plot, the character, the themes, or the production. Steins;Gate in one minute does about three of those to a degree that makes most anime's first episode look childish attempts by comparison. We're breaking down every element of this intro - even getting into some good old fashion dialogue breakdown - to determine what we can take away from just ONE MINUTE of footage. I've never been accused once in my life of hyperbole and I sure as hell won't have that thrown at me here. We launch off Operation;Yggdrasil by talking about the first minute of Steins;Gate. So what is it about this fight that really stuck out to me in comparison to many of the later much more flashy and thematically resonant ones? It's gotta be the third realm of the medium - audio. Do Visuals Matter? - The Differing Styles of Oregairus Two Seasons Replay Value 2019-07-16 | Since the answer to that question is a quite obvious - duh doy. Let's ask instead what meaning can we take away from the different visuals and how maybe, just maybe, the unique art style of each season of Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru or My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected - actually makes them not only distinct...but maybe stronger. Also I went for Persona music because weirdly I think there's some really interesting inverted themes between the two series but also some similar ones and that concept was kinda sticking with me as I was editing this video. How Cooking Food Highlights Log Horizons Greatest Strength Replay Value 2019-07-06 | Log Horizon remains one of the best anime I've ever watched, and part of the reason for that is because the world of Elder Tale is actually important to the story that is being told. Log Horizon's Greatest Strength is that the systems that it's fantasy setting creates are utilized by the characters and we as the audience begin to care as much about the world and it's systems as we do about the things that those systems affect - AKA everything. To trace how this evolution happens we'll be taking a look from initial instance to logical conclusion, and breaking down why unification of desire and narrative questions is kinda the best thing ever.
