Alger Falls - Waterfalls of Michigan Series Davids Passage 2016-08-22 | Alger Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls to see in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Mostly because you can see it right from the road. (You don't even have to get out of your car in fact.) It's located right on M-28 just before you enter the town of Munising, Michigan. Although these falls are fairly simple to get to, to fully experience their beauty you have to put a bit of effort into climbing to the top. Pictured Rocks Kayaking Davids Passage 2016-08-08 | In this video I take you along while I kayak Pictured Rocks near Munising Michigan. This is by far one of my absolute favorite kayaking experiences EVER! This video journals my experience throughout the day and is my best attempt to highlight the beauty of this national lake shore. This video is split up into a few parts, and here's why...We used Uncle Ducky's Paddling Michigan as our guide service. (http://www.paddlingmichigan.com) They offer several options to paddle Pictured Rocks, and so I thought it would be appropriate to split the video up into segments that would reflect the type of trip you might experience should you book with them. The trip we chose was the "paddle and hike". This took us along roughly 14 miles of beautiful Lake Superior shoreline, and then ended with a 3 mile hike to a pickup point. In the middle, we stopped for lunch at Mosquito Beach.Some trips they offer just go to the point where you eat lunch and then return home. In my opinion, you miss out on a lot if you just paddle halfway and then back. If you ever want to paddle this, I highly suggest long sleeve everything as the stable flies are AWFUL! AuTrain River Paddling - in Michigans Upper Peninsula Davids Passage 2016-08-05 | This video features my wife and I paddling the AuTrain River in Au Train, Michigan. We started at Cameron Crossing, just north of Lake AuTrain along Forest Lake Rd. We then spent the next 3.5 hours canoeing this beautiful river, eventually ending up in beautiful Lake Superior. This video highlights some of the beauty that this river provides for those who decide to kayak, canoe, SUP, or paddle otherwise. We did not use a livery service this time as the canoe we used came free with the cabin we rented. It just so happened that the cabin was on the river as well, which made for a super convenient river experience. The Smudge Fire - Mosquito Hack Davids Passage 2016-06-22 | Hate mosquitoes? I do, and this video will show you one way I deal with them when I'm in the bush. This is a very effective bushcraft method for dealing with mosquitoes. My first exposure to a smudge was many moons ago when my aunt passed away and some native fire keepers came in and smudged her house. Her husband was Chippewa, and after a person passed, it was their tradition to fill the house with smoke in order to purge the house of spirits (or something like that. It was a long time ago :-) Well, it turns out that smoke is pretty good at purging areas of bugs in general, and that is what a smudge fire is all about. The basic principle is simple; make a smoky fire. Since mosquitoes (and bugs in general) hate smoke, they will keep away from it (for the most part).In order to contain the smudge and make it portable, I use an old soup can with a wire coat hanger rigged into a handle. This is also an excellent way to make a coal transportable over long distances. North Country Trail Day Hike - Lowell, Michigan #Hike100NCT Davids Passage 2016-02-15 | In this video I take you along with me on a recent (and cold!) day hike on the North Country Trail. This day hike represented the final miles for my #Hike100NCT challenge. This challenge is sponsored by the North Country Trail Association in conjunction with the National Park Service to encourage folks to get out on the trail this year in celebration of its 100 year anniversary. The temps and winds varied for the day with averages at around 10F with wind chills bringing it down to -5F. We started our hike at a boy scout cabin in the Lowell State Game area in Lowell, Michigan. From there we hiked about 7.5 miles north, and then back to the cabin. This was a group day hike with the Michigan Hiking and Backpacking Facebook Group.I got to meet some really cool people, and it was amazing weather for a hike. Afterwards we all went over to the Flatt River Grill in Lowell for some much deserved grub. Frogg Toggs Toadz Anura Jacket Review Davids Passage 2015-12-15 | In this video I review the Frogg Toggs Toadz Anura rain jacket. I've now had this jacket on me for a few rainy day hikes, and have really been impressed with its performance. I would say that this jacket is a step up from the entry-level Frogg Toggs jackets. It features the same material that has made Frogg Toggs famous, but is covered in an extra layer of material that enhances the look and performance of the jacket. If you would like more information on this jacket, or if you would like to purchase one and support this channel, head on over to: http://amzn.to/1OnVohxThis jacket features 4 zipper pockets on the outside; two on the chest, and two on the sides for hands etc. It also has two VERY large internal pockets where you could dump all kinds of gear; hand warmers come to mind in particular. The waist seam has two cinch cords so you can tighten the waist. It also has a cinch-able hood with two pulls where you would normally find them, but also one on the top/back of the head for further tightening. I'll be honest that I am always a little leery when it comes to rain jackets with zipper pockets, so to test the pockets, I put card-stock in them before heading out on a rainy hike, needless to say, the car-stock came out bone dry at the end of the day. I was also very impressed with how lightweight and packable this jacket is. Canoe Tip - The J Stroke Davids Passage 2015-12-15 | In this video I demonstrate how I do the "J Stroke". This is a canoe paddling technique that allows you to keep your paddle on one side of your boat, and propel yourself straight.One of the frustrations in canoeing is keeping the bow of your boat straight. This is especially true if you are solo canoeing. The first instinct is to lift your paddle out of the water, switch sides, and then correct your direction by paddling on the other side. Although this works, the problem with this method is three-fold. One, you often drip water in the boat, getting your gear wet. Two, doing this all day long can really take a toll on your energy levels. And three, at the end of the day (and into the next) you are almost certain to have sore muscles (unless you're a young buck :-) With the J Stroke, you keep the paddle on one side of the boat for the most part; keeping the water where it belongs (in the river). Charlestown State Park Day Hike Davids Passage 2015-12-08 | In this video I take you along with me on a rainy day hike in Charlestown State Park in Charlestown, Indiana. This park sits right on the Ohio River, and is very rich in history. For this hike, I hiked trails 3 and 7 which led me down to the banks of the Ohio River. This is a very well-marked, and mostly paved hike. This trail took me down to the historic Rose Island, which was sort of an amusement park in the early 20th century. There were still many remnants of the park left to enjoy which you will see in the video. Before going any further though, I do want to apologize because I kept pronouncing this place as "CharlesTON" instead of "CharlesTOWN". My bad :-)One thing that was nice about this particular hike, is that because it was rainy and in late November, I had the trail all to myself. Along the trail were many signs, and interactive kiosks that told the history of the park, which was nice too. Harrods Creek Kayaking - Louisville, Kentucky Davids Passage 2015-12-01 | In this video I take you along as I kayak Harrods Creek near Louisville, Kentucky. The creek is actually in Prospect Kentucky, but it is in the greater Louisville metro area. This "creek" is a tributary of the Ohio River. I say "creek" because it probably averages about 75' across in most places. But there is very little current to it. On this stretch or river you can expect to see deer, turkey, turtles, cranes, and possibly even a bald eagle. The livery I rented from was Nachand Canoe and Kayak Rental: http://www.nachandkayaks.com This is a family-owned business, and attached to the business is a sports bar/restaurant called, Darkstar Restaurant or Darkstar Tavern. $30 got me 4 hours with this beautiful river. One of the nice things about it is that because there is very little current, I was able to paddle up the creek for a couple of hours, turn around and head right back to my car. Fall Colors Kayaking - Huron River - Ann Arbor Michigan Davids Passage 2015-11-02 | Make sure to watch till the end for a surprise wildlife encounter :) In this video my wife and I kayak the Huron River in Ann Arbor Michigan during the beautiful colors of fall. This trip was taken on October 20th, 2015. We launched from the Barton Nature Area in Ann Arbor, Michigan and took out at Gallop Park on the other side of Ann Arbor. Just past Argo Park we entered the Argo cascades which the town built to help boaters avoid a former portage around the dam there. The cascades offer 9 drops in the river that make the river very fun. It is recommended that those who go through the cascades can swim and have experience paddling as boats can easily get swamped from the rapids. Both my wife and I got wet, but didn't tip.This river flows near the University of Michigan campus, and several parts of campus can be seen as well as the University of Michigan hospital. Wood Sorrel - Wild Edibles Series Davids Passage 2015-06-09 | Wood Sorrel (aka Oxalis acetosella) has to be one of my favorite wild edible plants to find. It's taste is one of the best in the leaf world IMHO, and it is super easy to identify. The taste can really give you a boost on the trail. To my knowledge there are no known toxic lookalikes. Having said that, always consult with a local expert first before consuming ANY wild edible plant.One thing I will say is that wood sorrel contains a chemical called oxalic acid. In quantity, oxalic acid is bad for you, but I can't say for sure how much it would take to hurt you. One more reason to consult a local expert first. With many wild edible plants, only certain parts can be consumed while other parts are toxic, and certain plants can only be consumed in certain quantities before they become bad for you. My guess is that the amount it takes is determined much by who you are. For example, while a pound might be bad for young children or pregnant mothers, it may be perfectly fine for a 25-year-old. This edible mushroom or fungus mostly grows on the sides of dead trees, and is best found and harvested in early May in my area of the United States. If you're not having luck morel hunting, you just might have some luck finding one of these. Key characteristics...- feather-like pattern on top (hence "pheasantback)- spores on the bottom- smells like watermelon rind- growing on dead tree To test if this is edible take your knife and cut it. Hammock Hanging Simple and Cheap Davids Passage 2015-05-12 | In this video I show a very simple and cheap way to hang your hammock. This is the same method I have used for years now. This is a very affordable and lightweight solution for those just getting into the hammock camping world. With just a couple of heavy duty nylon webbing straps you can make your own hanging solution that will make your hammock camping setup super easy. The nice thing about this method is that the straps you end up making will most likely fit right in to your hammock bag. The straps can also be used in other ways as well. Leeks aka Ramps - Wild Edibles Series Davids Passage 2015-04-21 | In this video I take you along to show you how you can identify leeks in the wild. These are also called ramps as well as a few other names. They are fairly easy to identify, and if you like onions or garlic, you will love these!WARNING: Always consult with a local expert FIRST before trying ANY wild edible plant. I am NOT an expert. They are great in soups and salads, and do not have to be cooked to be eaten. They would be amazing on burgers too if you hike with a grill on your back :-)In my area they tend to grow on hillsides and in soils that are fairly moist with some consistency. They often grow in large patches. And I do it with a fairly inexpensive Smith's diamond sharpener. Easy Spoon Carving - Without a spoon knife Davids Passage 2015-01-07 | Spoon carving is a ton of fun, and you can even go as far as to leave your spoon at home when you hit the trail if you have a knife on you. It just takes a bit of practice.In this video I take you along as I carve a crude, yet simple wooden spoon using only my Mora Bushcraft Black knife. That's right, no special spoon knife needed. Although spoon knives are wonderful to use, practicing this skill will allow you to leave that spoon at home on your next trek out into the wild. I call it my personal care pouch. I do this because I am very minimalistic when it comes to these things. How to Make Char Cloth Davids Passage 2014-12-02 | Char cloth is something that is used as a way to convert sparks into fire using the flint and steel method of creating fire. By charring natural material, the charred material will easily catch a spark. You then can blow it into flame using a tinder bundle. Flint and Steel Fire - With a Mora Bushcraft Black Knife Davids Passage 2014-11-27 | Flint and steel fires have been around for quite a while now. And there are many ways to create them. In this video I take you along with me as I brew up a cup of tea in the woods and make my fire using a flint and steel method using a Mora Bushcraft Black knife. You don't have to have a Mora Buscraft Black knife to do this though.
