I immediately gravitated towards Forest Hills considering how close it was to where I was staying. Plus, I never got to hear a 612 run on the original SiraTone controller. The ones I filmed in Illinois were always running a newer UltraVoice or MCP. I really love how creepy that analog controller sounds in person. While certainly not the loudest siren, it definitely has an unmistakable sound with the surrounding hills and buildings providing great acoustics. I might stop by again when the weather gets warmer again and who knows…maybe I can try my luck and see if I can get other signals tested.Sirens surrounding the Pittsburgh metro are mostly used to either signal a curfew or alert volunteer firefighters as a backup to their pagers. For the newer enthusiasts, the Federal Signal Equinox is a lower-pitched, 8 port version of the 2001-130. This specific Equinox is located near Fire Station Two off Marrowbone Lane.To our surprise, it didn't run the expected attack tone but instead ran ‘fast wail’ for a minute. Capturing one of the first videos of an Equinox using this signal was exciting, but experiencing it in person was even more awesome. You can hear our unbelief towards the end. It even had that signature, quick bite of sound similar to what a 2001 produces when it's facing your way. In fact, it was so intense that it maxed out one of my microphones, which is quite rare. Custer Electric Siren | Hi-Lo | Arlington, IN DSRX100 2023-08-05 | Originally Recorded 7/28/2023 © 2023 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)So I found myself around Indy, not really planning to record anything, but decided to give it a try. With heavy rain around, I positioned an audio recorder near this Custer siren and waited. I didn’t even get my cameras out until later. I was 90% certain it wasn’t going to get tested but suddenly, at Noon, the siren came alive.This 400W unit was installed in 2011, while Rushville's units, based on the Code 3 Vcon siren, date back to the 90s. This one is higher pitched and it almost sounds like it's connected to an array of different siren “controllers” run in tandem. Over time, the hi-lo signal goes out of sync, and the unit is slightly out of tune, which surprisingly creates a great effect reminiscent of European sirens. It's fairly loud, surpassing the ES-2/4000s I've attempted. For a cheap, off the shelf alternative, these provide a great value to towns that may not have the funds for an outdoor warning system. Federal Signal Modulator 8032B | Voice, Wail, & Alert/Steady | Summersville, IL (Mt.Vernon) DSRX100 2023-07-22 | Originally Recorded 7/4/2023 © 2023 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)This was a bit of a spur of the moment type of recording, originally I was going to try a T-bolt in Murphysboro, but some neighboring communities were cancelling due to the holiday, so I figured I'd try the safe option and record a Modulator instead. Don't worry, I do have a Murphysboro recording I'm planning to release in the future. This Modulator is located in Summersville, which is a sort of "town" right next to Mount Vernon, Illinois. There's some houses, an airport, and a school. But that's about it. This replaced a EOWS 612 back in late 2018. Apparently they were sold to a neighboring county, but I haven't had the chance to check it out. As much as I love the 612s, these cover a lot better. Towards the end you can actually hear Mount Vernon's other 8032Bs, even the voice announcement. When they had the 612s, I could barely make them out in the background.Mt. Vernon, much like the rest of Illinois, tests on the first Tuesday of the month at 10am, unless severe weather is forecast. During severe thunderstorms, the wail tone is used for the full 3 minute cycle. It’s your typical full cycle alert test, so nothing special. But this was before some radio upgrades were made to the system. There was no FSK polling and the Model 7 was still running off a legacy telephone relay. The most obvious problem is that it skipped the first set of tones, but luckily activated on round 2 and left a nice ambience. This is probably one of the last times it ran the attack signal via land line.You can find this siren at the end of N Geiger Street. It’s easy to spot off 231 and is the first 2001 siren I’ve ever heard up close. When I was looking at some old articles, the intention was the city was going to replace it with a "voice-capable" unit and move this siren head elsewhere. But they ended up just getting a new -130 and sticking it in the more industrial part of town.With the exclusion of Jasper, sirens in Dubois County are tested every first day of the month at 6pm for a full cycle. This one is located at Francis Vigo Elementary and just like their other one, it was painted brown after a school renovation. It was painted CD yellow as well, but the last recording I did was pretty bad. It's a harder one to film, especially since it's hard to get a good angle of it in good sunlight. But the low mount and central location gives for a crazy loud experience with a nice ambience at the end.Sirens in Knox County are tested on Saturdays at 11:30, usually about once a month except during winter. I had a couple locations in mind, but ultimately decided for Wichita. Because of dumb luck, it so happened to be their special “attack mode” test; commemorating the 70th anniversary of the city's first ever air raid test. This one is located on 25th street and Estelle Street at Progressive Baptist Church. It’s a 1000T siren with some wacky attack signal timing. But most importantly it was in an area I could easily fly the drone. The surrounding ATIs surprisingly sound pretty good at the distance. The closest at WSU. They do more of a fast-wail-like signal for some reason but still a nice ambience.Sirens are a pretty big deal down here and this special test got a lot of attention. The moment I got the drone up, I noticed a local news station was parked behind the corner, armed with a camera for a video. They have mostly 2001s, but two of their three original sirens still operate as a backup. This is their only STH-10, located on the north side of town alongside a bank and a car wash. The other one was -130d but they still have it in storage. For a while they were hooked up via telephone relay and ran attack. But in recent years they’ve been upgraded to radio activation. Sadly, there’s no more attack signal, but at least this system is more reliable. Besides the rust, it still sounds healthy for a siren installed back in 1974.Sirens in Dubois County are tested every first day of the month at 6pm, with the exception of Jasper which tests at 4pm. Perry County has been installing some new Sentry sirens in more rural towns in recent years. A few of them are in very scenic areas such as this one. It’s right next to the Ohio River and just across Kentucky at a small park. I figured I’d get this uploaded now since I’ll be back in the Summertime.Sirens in Perry County are tested along with the pager system every Saturday at Noon Central Time. The activation tone seems to set off the siren at predetermined lengths. Older sirens tend to do more of a noon blast while the newer ones do about thirty seconds. Sick Federal Signal Model 2 | Alert Blast | Brandenburg, KY DSRX100 2023-04-15 | Originally Recorded 3/4/2023 © 2023 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)So after a few attempts I was finally able to record this low-pitched Model 2. I was always told they do daily blasts, but apparently it’s only a monthly thing that happens on first Saturdays at Noon. As for the low pitch, I’m not 100 percent sure what’s going on, but if I had to guess…it’s probably a 240V Model 2 that’s only hooked to 120V. My Model 2 peaks similarly at that voltage. The pitch also stays constant, and has sounded the same way for years.Brandenburg has a nice mix of 2001s and Model 2s. You can find this siren at a lift station on the outskirts of town. It’s also not too far away from another low pitched siren, Maukport’s Model 3. It's located on the north side of town near a couple schools and a trailer park on Portersville Road. There's three -SRNBs in the system and they all run the steady signal, whereas the other ones can be a wildcard. They might not be the most unique siren, but I loved how the drone shots turned out. Towards the end you can hear the downtown DSA run a couple more cycles of wail.Sirens in Jasper are tested every first day of the month, promptly at 4pm They are controlled by the city police while other sirens in the county are tested at 6pm by the county’s dispatch center. I don’t usually do this so I figured why not pull an Oldham/Louisville duo. This iconic set of sirens are located behind the La Grange police station. The 3T22 is used for tornadoes. The Darley is a mystery. Maybe it’s a backup siren, a fire siren, or maybe it’s been totally abandoned. Either way, it’s been on my bucket list for awhile now, so I’m glad to finally check these off. While setting up, I glanced to my side and thought I saw someone run past with a tripod. Then I saw another and more. I walked down the alley to find out the whole Cincy crew and others were here too. Jasper, IN | Siren System Ambience (Feb 2023, Downtown) DSRX100 2023-02-25 | Originally Recorded 2/1/2023 © 2023 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)Every first of the month I’ve always laid out a recorder outside to capture Jasper’s routine siren test. While most tests have been uneventful, this hasn’t stopped oddities from popping up. In this one, you can hear that the DSA run alert for a bit. While common everywhere, this is super rare to hear in Jasper. In recent years the city has also been doing a lot more full-cycle tests. This is a pretty nice endurance check for the system while also revealing some programming bugs.For some reason, one (or more) of the 2001s stop sounding at two minutes. It’s hard to tell in the video, but in Audition’s spectrum analyzer, you can see the moment when a siren or two shuts off. These appear to be the 2001-DCs that still run alert. The DSA also goes on a little longer than three minutes which is why I think the city sent a cancellation tone. They probably thought it wouldn’t shut off. However this backfired and caused it to run alert instead until they sent the cancellation tone again. Since there’s many events downtown, I thought they were just testing a new way to sound the DSA by itself but when I compared both tones they were exactly the same. A similar issue popped up a few months back as well. I do have an old recording where it sounded like you can hear it run alert in a distant ambience, but always thought it was just a fluke. Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T | Full Attack & Alert | Paducah, KY DSRX100 2023-02-11 | Originally Recorded 11/6/2021 © 2023 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)That's right, the horn is still hanging in there...So back in 2021 I made a few trips down to Paducah to capture 4K video of their remaining Thunderbolts as they may get "-130d" someday. This one is behind Concord elementary, just off of US60. It's the first Thunderbolt I've ever heard. Famous for its lack of horn bolts, It's only being held together by the horn support brace below, causing the horn to be loose and unstable. I swear some day I'm going to pass by and the whole thing will be hornless. It still has a tinny sound, and lacks that bassy roar you usually hear in a Thunderbolt. That small gap between the horn and chopper drastically alters the sound. I'm curious how it affects the decibel rating. It still has a punch, but it's not the loudest Thunderbolt I've recorded.McCracken County tests their outdoor warning sirens every first Saturday of the month at 1PM. Tests are canceled during overcast skies or if severe weather is expected. Tests sometimes get canceled during holiday weekends, but not all. Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000 | Growl Tests | Murfreesboro, TN DSRX100 2023-01-28 | Originally Recorded 1/7/2023 & 9/3/2022 © 2023 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)Here’s a short compilation of Music City Siren’s Thunderbolt 1000. The head is an ex-Chattanooga unit made in 1954, coupled with a 6m blower from Cincinnati. The original blower was electric, but converted to gas in this case due to power constraints. The siren itself sat atop a public housing complex and could be seen from the Interstate. I actually remember passing by when I was in Chattanooga about ten years ago. I never thought I’d actually get to hear it go off someday.This thing is crazy loud, especially at this distance. I know I say that with a lot of siren videos, but this tops them off. All three of my external microphones were maxed out. My main camera experienced extreme vibrations that made the video look like jello. So a lot of the shots I used came from after the test. Only my iPhone came out with usable video, and surprisingly good audio. It’s the only mic that didn’t clip somehow. This thing is buried in the trees so I figured spring time was the best time to come back. The wind-up is still weird, the pitch still peaks low, but the volume is still loud. It’s a mystery, but my best guess is that it’s on a phase converter and runs at a lower RPM than usual. I got a better look at the stator too. It’s still hard to see, but it appears to be an eight port Model 5 (which I used to call a Model 3)...not to be confused with the larger Model 7 of which we used to call a Model 5...phew that's a mouth full.From Maukport, you can also hear Brandenburg, Kentucky’s sirens from across the river. Lots have changed. Their old, Sterling K2 has since been removed. It sat pretty close to this siren. No idea what happened to it. The siren looks way different than the original video too. There's a little more rust on this siren's brackets as well as algae growth making the siren look much older. But overall, I think I like the character it now has. The siren now does the 'wail' signal. French Lick, which borders West Baden, has the only sirens that run 'alert', although one of their T-128s recently got -130d so who knows haha.Overall, I like how this video turned out. Color correcting was a pain, especially the drone footage. But the drone footage looked pretty. French Lick/West Baden is very scenic area as far as Indiana goes. I just wish it wasn't such a dreary, winter day.Orange County routinely tests their sirens every Friday at Noon; rain or shine. Mt. Vernon, IN | Siren System Ambience DSRX100 2022-12-17 | Originally Recorded 9/30/2015 © 2022 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)Here’s another one of those videos I’ve been meaning to upload for awhile. Seven years to be exact. I never realized how nice Mt. Vernon’s sirens blended until recording this. Almost every siren in the system can be heard. The loudest being a 10V that runs alert, while the other Sentrys run attack. The Fedelcode Model 5 makes the system sound like one big 8/12 port siren at times. Sadly, it was removed along with the building it once sat on. Maybe that siren was saved, but I remain doubtful. A 10V1T now takes its place. You can also hear a Whelen Vortex peep in from time to time, really completing the chord and sounding prominent each time it swings around. From my understanding, the Sentrys replaced a system of ACA Alertronics, although it’s unknown when this happened. The only evidence remaining are the battery cabinets which remain empty. My only complaint about this recording was the wind. I spent at least a couple hours trying to remove the wind noise from the audio. I didn’t have a good windscreen at the time, besides an old sock. But with the almost cloudy conditions, it’s one of those recordings that almost feel “real” like an imminent storm is approaching.Also, I hope you all like the graphics I used on this ambience. I’m super backlogged on some ambience recordings but didn’t know how to proceed with editing them since the footage looks bad and the photos from my older recordings aren’t great either. With this new map template I created, I’m thinking about posting more ambiences in this style. Just let me know in the comments what you think. American Signal T-128 | Full Attack | Danville, IN (Hendricks Co.Tornado Siren Test) DSRX100 2022-10-29 | Originally Recorded 4/15/2022 © 2022 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)T-128s are one of my favorite sirens to hear in attack. Especially for the full cycle. Danville is one of the few local places where you can get a consistent, full cycle test…given that you choose the right siren. Some test shorter, and some do alert. I ended up at the one near the 4H fairgrounds. There’s plenty of places to park, and it’s still in a flyable area if you want to fly a drone.The wind was crazy. It took forever just to stabilize the tight shot (why there's a delay) and I'm still not 100% satisfied with the result. I feel like I could’ve shot closer, but I like how the audio turned out. I placed recorders at varying distances and the reverb I captured is pretty insane like many T-128s. The narrow projection horn really bites when it faces your way. I usually leave one mic set to manual, level 35 on the Zoom recorder to be exact. It never changes, and I always keep it at that level on every siren. This recording is the first time I’ve ever had it peak. That’s how loud it was! But with that being said, it’s only loud for a snippet. It’s more of a quick crack of blaring sound, then it’s quiet. Super quiet. It sounds like it’s a mile away. Yeah I know…it’s a rotational siren and that’s sort of what they do. But it always seems more pronounced on the T-128. Either way, this thing sounds amazing, and I’m glad to have captured it.Sirens in Hendricks County are tested every Friday at 11am. Daviess County has been replacing a lot of their older mechanicals through the past few years. It's been awhile since I last scoped the place out. But I'm certain all the mechanical sirens are long gone. New sirens have probably popped up as well. It's a uniform Whelen system now, a well maintained one too. But I do miss their mechanical sirens in the outlying towns. Yelvington's "rotating" Model 5 and Maceo's 10V2T were very memorable. I wish I could've heard their other 10V2Ts but they were in more inaccessible areas or just generally hard to record well.But the real big kicker is that Maceo's 10V2T was still working when this Vortex was first installed. For a short time, both sounded together for the weekly test. I even had that summer off, and I could've totally recorded it, but I didn't even realize this Vortex was even there to begin with. Luckily, someone else was able to record it so I linked the video below. I got to see a lot of cool sites as well as nab a couple recordings along the way. My trip started in Michigan and ended in Colorado before driving back and passing states like Kansas and Missouri.I left on a Monday to check out West Shore before heading to Chicagoland for their monthly test the next day. I wasn’t sure what to record and honestly, I somewhat wish I recorded something else. I’ve never heard a Cyclone before, and contemplated recording one of Bensenville’s. But I ultimately decided on this T-135 because…it’s basically the same thing but in a huge garbage can that rotates. Plus I haven’t heard one since my Memphis trip back in ‘14. If you haven’t heard a P-50/T-135 before, these things kick! It’s definitely worth going out of your way to hear one. Of course years ago, my goal was that if I ever ended up around Chicago during test time, I’d record the Darien Hurricane. Unfortunately, I waited too long and that siren is obviously long gone.This one is located on Bartlett Avenue, next to the water tower near the train station. Overall, it’s a pretty cool place and a brilliant recording area. The parking lot was empty and the train station wasn’t really that busy. It’s a pretty quiet area and a great place to record. I was here around the fall, so there was a little fall foliage coming out as well. It was mostly cloudy, but a cool, brilliant day for recording; a typical fall day.Bartlett, like many places in Illinois, tests monthly every first Tuesday at 10am. This time we're at a Hornet. Even though it's been five years, I do remember the test being very late. My main cameras actually stopped recording. Luckily I had a couple audio recorders running the entire time. With a little bit of editing magic, I was able to get a video of the wind up without actually having a camera rolling at the time. In terms of volume, this guy was pretty weak. It's definitely one of the quieter sirens out there...even when compared to other Hornets I've recorded. But at least the scenery is nice. This is an “Evansville-like” 15V1T setup that’s in neighboring Posey County. It sits near the county line and (to our knowledge) is the only 15V in Posey County. I was convinced this could even be a siren controlled by Evansville due to its proximity. It even has that characteristic damage on the intake like a lot of Evansville’s sirens had at the time. Once 1PM rolled around, the siren roared to life and luckily I got a good recording.Afterwards I had the pleasant experience to meet a Karen. She stormed outside and after some questions, claimed she’s the only one who’s allowed to check the siren. Side note, she’s not with the county. This historic Sterling is a Nooner that gets tested daily; something that’s not too common here. It’s located right on top of Haubstadt’s town hall. I’m not sure if it’s activated during emergencies but there is a T-121 off camera to the right that’s tied to the county. In fact, this siren was more of an accidental find. I was recording that T-121 one day, and suddenly I heard another siren wind up. It sounded somewhat close. So I drove around for a few blocks with no luck...until there was. I happened to look on top of one of the buildings and found this.I’m not sure of it’s age, but it sounds great. This was taken immediately after a small meetup in Knox County with American Siren Productions. We decided to record a new 10V in Warrick after this siren but sadly no dice. I will at least be recording this one again with some of my newer equipment. Stay Tuned.Sirens in Gibson County are tested every Friday at 12 Noon and are controlled by central dispatch. Tests are conducted rain or shine. This siren is on a timer and gets tested everyday at Noon briefly. I had the drone by this time but the wind pretty much grounded it. Luckily the wide shot looked pretty cool with the pole shaking in the wind.You can find this siren behind their fire station. It was installed back in October 2012, which is hard to believe it’s been that long ago. It’s pretty much your average -130 and didn’t replace anything old. They have it setup where you can easily here the radio tones from the cabinet. Usually the volume is faint in other setups, but I heard this one clearly from 15-20 feet away. It’s also got some pitch fluctuations here and there but overall it sounds good…and loud. This thing maxed out two of my mics! Not many sirens have done that.With the exception of Jasper, sirens in Dubois County are tested every first day of each month at 6PM. This time it’s a Thunderbolt recording from a few years back. This one is located by Wilkerson Elementary in Louisville. I remember running into traffic and barely having time to setup. I ended up parking almost under the siren itself. Too close actually. My main camera couldn’t capture the full siren without cropping part of it. I could change lenses? Too late…at exactly 12 Noon the siren roared to life. I ended up zooming in with my old Sony and edited them together. It’s a classic, no frills siren video; but at least an easy one to edit (which me and my computer miss).Sirens in Louisville (Jefferson County) are tested every second Tuesday of the month at 12 Noon by MetroSafe. Tests are cancelled during severe weather, but will continue being tested during overcast skies or light rain. It’s a three minute, full-cycle test, and if you’re lucky you might get an attack cycle. But I pass this one all the time so it definitely deserves a recording. You can find it off US 231 behind Loogootee’s municipal building. Their other siren is a T-121 on the other side of town and runs ‘attack’. You can actually hear it pretty well even in this recording. From my understanding, these are normally sounded by Loogootee’s dispatch center but it’s not staffed 24/7. During their offline hours, Martin County Sheriff’s Dispatch takes over.Martin County’s sirens are controlled independently. This time we’re traveling back to the summer of 2019; almost three years ago as I write this. I met up with Chris to record this rather healthy 2T22B located at Vincennes Fire Station Two. My friend (who’s recorded the Alabama stuff on my channel) came along as well as Chance with the local EMA. Chance activated the system for us through his mobile setup. Afterwards, Chris and I went over to a couple other siren tests. One was successful, the other was not. But still two out of three ain’t too bad. My main camera was also down so needless to say, I might be back to record this again…but better.Sirens in Knox County are tested as needed on Saturdays at 11:30, weather permitting. This time from the 2018 Illinois Tornado Drill. Considering my good luck in Eldorado on the last trip, I decided to come back. This time to a cool, roof-mounted Banshee 115. It’s located atop the (former?) city hall and museum. To my surprise, there’s also a Darley Model 2 up there that I didn’t notice until the drone was up. This was easily the windiest siren recording I’ve done. The drone could barely stay still, only got a few usable shots. I had to mount everything low and try to block some of the wind with my car. And yet I still got camera shake and wind noise. I could hear what appears to be Harrisburg’s T-128s from a whopping seven miles away. I’ve enhanced the audio but it was still clearly heard. It’s possible there’s an eight port siren that’s closer but then again the wind was blowing from that direction so it probably helped carry the sound. To top it off, I’m pretty sure the wind helped keep the chopper spinning during the wind down. At first I thought it was just the momentum and bearings alone. But it just kept going. It was still spinning when I finally left. I'd post the full video but nobody is going to watch 15 minutes of a chopper winding down.Much like the majority of Illinois, sirens in Eldorado are tested every first Tuesday of the month at 10AM if no severe weather is expected. Get used to them because I’ll be uploading several before rebranding all my graphics and intros. This was filmed back in a pretty fun meetup with the Cincy crew back in 2018. After recording a Model 2 in Crestwood, we booked it over here to Standard Avenue. While not exactly the punchiest Thunderbolt, it still has a healthy sound. The neighboring 2001s screaming along also made for a nice ambience at the end. You can even hear them peep in as this Thunderbolt sounds. At the beginning, you can also hear some Whelens sounding in whoop. These are coming from “Rubbertown” a very industrial part of Louisville on the west side. I could never pinpoint it, but it does sound like it’s rotating when I listened to the raw audio. It seems like the Rubbertown sirens (or at least the whooping one) are tested ever so slightly before the city does. You can hear them pretty well even from a few miles away.Sirens in Louisville and Jefferson County are tested by MetroSafe on the second Tuesday of each month, promptly at Noon. Federal Signal 2001-SRN | Full Attack | Mayfield, KY (Graves Co.Tornado Siren Test) DSRX100 2022-03-12 | Originally Recorded 6/5/2021 © 2022 Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission)Last summer, I took a trip down to Mayfield and Paducah to record their monthly siren tests. Both test on the first Saturdays of the month; Mayfield at Noon and Paducah at one. I figured I'd nab a quick recording of one of their 2001s before heading to Paducah to film a Thunderbolt. You can find this particular siren on the north side of town by the 4-H fairgrounds.As you may know, Mayfield got hit by a devastating tornado a few months back. Many homes and businesses were destroyed as a massive wedge tornado carved through town. Lives were lost and the city many never be the same. While Mayfield is still rebuilding, the community has grown stronger. There's some amazing stories of heroism from the night the tornado hit western Kentucky. If you have time, you should definitely check some of them out.This siren, in conjunction with other notification methods, helped save lives that night. To my understanding, this 2001 is still there. However, two sirens did receive damage; a 2001 near a John Deere dealership and the famously high-mounted 3T22 downtown. Thanks to it's thick steel pole, the 3T22 actually survived a direct hit from the tornado without toppling over. However, according to the EMA, both still sustained damage and will need to be replaced. I really regret not filming that 3T22 last summer. Since it's so close to Paducah's system, I had some big plans for recording Mayfield's system...like recording several ambiences between various 2001s and the 3T22. As well as a drone video of the 3T22. But at least I got to see and hear what sounded like a successful siren test county-wide which I hope continued through the rest of the year.Sirens in Graves County are tested on the first Saturday of the Month at 12 Noon. If you got the right frequency you can hear several "siren spotters" report test results to the EMA. It's likely the only one in the entire county and it does sound pretty nice. It's been on my record list since MusicCitySirens and I discovered this dual tone variant a couple years back (phew, time flies). You can find this siren at the Longview Recreation Center. I decided to film it from a distance from the neighboring school's parking lot. I kind of regret that since this siren is really not that loud, though it does provide a nice echo. Some of the drone footage also got corrupted so it's safe to say I'll probably be back sometime for a reshoot.Spring Hill resides in both Williamson and Maury Counties, but all the sirens are controlled by neighboring Williamson County's Emergency Management. This siren is located behind the fire department on N Wood Avenue and Mitchell Street. If memory serves me right, this is the only Allertor in the entire state of Alabama. So, a little bit of background...my original plan was to record a 2001 from a distance. The dim sky and moody rain would make for a great shot. 6PM rolls around and I hear nothing from the scanner. Siren tests are rarely cancelled unless severe weather is expected. So I waited and waited, and...still nothing. At this point, everything is soaking wet. Time to pack, they probably cancelled. My dad snagged along and helped me get everything back into the car to dry. I kept my scanner on just in case. As we were leaving, dispatch announced they were about to conduct the siren test. I didn't have time to grab my camera, so I whipped my phone out instead and this video is the result. I'm guessing dispatch was just super busy that night.Apologies for the guerilla-style videography. Thankfully my phone's internal stabilization helped smooth out some of the shake. Other than that, the siren ambience turned out great. If you watch my last "drive-by" siren recording, you'll notice that the Model 7 is back in business. The rain and dim lighting also gave a cool storm chasing vibe as well. Sentry 3V8 | Attack | Hawesville, KY | PDS TORNADO WARNING 12/10/21 DSRX100 2022-01-01 | Copyright 2021 | Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission). Originally Recorded 12/10/2021Finally, after dealing with a lot of technical problems with the editing software I use, I was finally able to get this up. This was recorded on the infamous December 10th outbreak that ravaged western Kentucky. At around 11:20 Central Time, a PDS (particularly dangerous situation) tornado warning was issued for extreme southern Hancock County and neighboring areas. A PDS tornado warning means that a confirmed, violent tornado is in progress. This prompted a siren activation throughout the entire county. We decided to initially try to intercept the storm, but due to the storm's violent history, an unreliable road network, and it being night we terminated the chase. Instead, we opted to film any siren action or whatever else came our way. A long form vlog about the event is in the works. Hopefully by early next year it'll be up, I'm still gathering some damage footage.We were in neighboring Perry County by the time the tornado warning was issued. All we had to do is cross the bridge into Hawesville which has a nice mix of Vortexes and a lone 3V8. It still sounds healthy and luckily hasn't been replaced...yet. I was surprised how well it could be heard across the river in Indiana. Bridge decks around here are noisy which obscured the siren, but once we crossed the river into town, the 3V8 could be heard once again. Hawesville was not in the polygon, but it's crazy to think we were still in the same supercell responsible for several violent tornadoes that night.Recording sirens during an actual warning is quite a rush. But if you do it, make sure to maintain situational awareness. Know your surroundings. Use an app like RadarScope and understand some of the local geography. No siren recording is worth your life, so always be careful and plan an escape route much like you would if you were chasing a tornado.Enjoy, and as always comment, like, and subscribe for more. Originally Recorded 10/7/2020Here’s a test a friend of mine captured down in Florence, Alabama last year. This ACA Penetrator is located on top of Courtview Towers on North Pine Street. This is probably the highest mounted siren I’ve seen and the drone shots perfectly demonstrate that. The downtown area has great acoustics and the echo sounds unreal. This is one of those sirens I really wish ran attack, but oh well... There's a lot firsts featured here. This video marks the first Alabama siren to be featured on my channel, as well as the channel's first small Penetrator (not including that Werden I did awhile back). I hope to make a trip down there sometime and check it out for myself. It seemed to throw a lot of sound despite the broken projector and added distance.The county has a nice mix of old and new sirens. Originally Recorded 1/2/2021Early in the year I met up with Chris (American Siren Productions) to record this unique, Whelen stereo-setup thing near the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. We had a failure at Graves County so we booked it over here with few minutes to spare. The plant once enriched fuel for use in nuclear reactors. However, it's in the process of being decommissioned. This siren system's future is uncertain so we nabbed a recording before anything happens to it. I'm hoping the county takes it over since there's no county-owned sirens here.You can find this siren duo on Ogden Landing Road. We're not sure why they opted setting up the sirens in a pair like this, but I'm guessing they just wanted something with a lot of range. During voice messages, only one of the sirens are programmed to sound. There are three other siren pairs on the outskirts of the plant while the plant itself has smaller Whelen omnis scattered about. Out of all the sirens in the system, this one is the only one that is easily accessible...at least for the time being. Security is pretty tight. I thought about getting the drone out, but after seeing what looked like security making rounds, I decided not to cause a scene. I was able to whip out a few wide shots with the phone, I just wish I was able to get aerials of this unique setup.Sirens in McCracken County are tested on the first Saturday of the month at 1PM on mostly clear days with the exception of the diffusion plant which tests regardless of weather.Enjoy, and as always comment, like, and subscribe for more. I decided upon recording this 2001-SRN at Southridge High School. There's a cemetery nearby which had a nice hill and some trees where I could take refuge. But honestly the rain and gloomy skies gave a nice vibe. Not to mention the echo off the school was intense. From a distance, this 2001 packed a surprising punch. Now only if it sounded wail...Sirens in Dubois County are tested every first day of the month at 4PM in Jasper, and 6PM everywhere else. Originally Recorded 5/1/2021In May, I decided to head down to Nashville to get a nice, 4K recording of one of their Eclipses. My initial goal was Whitfield Park but due to the crowds there, I went over to this one at Granbery Elementary school, located close to Brentwood. Like the 508 at Gower, this one also seems to be having battery issues and drops pitch as the attack cycle continues. It’s been a few months so I imagine it’s been fixed by now but it does seem like a few sirens in the system are having the same issue. Despite the battery issue, this thing ran pretty good. The coast down was excellent and seemed to keep going and going. Originally Recorded 4/2/2021Back in April, I had a free Friday evening to check out one of Bloomington’s Whelens. This particular one is located downtown and is part of IU’s siren system. I recorded this guy during the statewide drill years back. Since then, a couple new parking garages popped up. One of them is a public garage and can be taken all the way to the top next to where this Whelen stands. There’s a pretty nice view of town up there. Not only can you see campus from there, you can also spot the Union building where a 2905 sits on top of. Originally Recorded 6/5/2021Here's a monthly test of one of Paducah's remaining Thunderbolts. This one is located atop Lourdes Hospital. It's a very iconic siren, seen just as you enter Paducah from I-24. There's a weird delay with the rotator but other than that, it sounds great. Throughout the test you can hear another bolt peep in from time to time. I assume it's the one with the missing horn bolts which is still chugging along. I'm just glad I was able to record this one before it eventually gets replaced. I believe at this point all of Paducah's remaining Thunderbolts (and a couple that are gone) have been recorded at least once. The county has been replacing the Thunderbolts as they fail so I'm hoping to grab as many recordings from the area before it becomes 2001 land. My next goal is Lone Oak, a redo of the Concord Elem siren, an ambience, and hopefully an STH-10.Sirens in McCracken County are tested on the first Saturday of the month at 1PM, Central. Originally Recorded 8/11/2020After having a nice meetup in Buckner, I drove on over to Hartstern Elementary to hear their 1000T. As you can tell, it's healthy and sounds great, something that's starting to become less common in Louisville. This Thunderbolt is also located in a great spot acoustics-wise. There's a nearby mall and shopping center that seems to provide some nice flat surfaces for some echo. It's just too bad none of the sirens here run attack or at very least have some kind of winddown. Either way, I can't complain. Originally Recorded 6/3/2020Last summer, I decided to head up to Bedford, Kentucky, to record one of the many Loudoun sirens in the area. I ended up stopping at the siren located on Morton Ridge Road, a few miles south of town. Every siren I’ve attempted to record in the area has either sounded sick, quiet, or plain not work at all. This one was definitely on the quiet side but was loud enough to produce at least some echo. The same can’t be said about their other siren in town of which I've recorded but not posted yet. The one thing that’s really bizarre is how this one sounds in alert while the other Loudoun sirens sound in wail.Sirens in Henry, Trimble, and Owen Counties are tested on the first Wednesday of the month at 11am. Originally Recorded 10/3/2020Back in October I travelled down to the Nashville metro to record some siren action. You might recall that blue Mod I posted awhile back. Well, this is what I captured just before that. My initial goal was to head to the 508 near the ballfields at Edwin Warner Park. But once I arrived, there was some kind of game going on. The parking lot was full and a huge crowd. I decided not to mess with any of that and went to this 508 located at Gower Elementary. I had already recorded this back in 2014, but due to time constraints I didn't have many options.Luckily, the siren went off right on the dot and initially sounded pretty healthy. But as you can hear, this siren starts to loose pitch and volume towards the last few cycles of attack. It sounds like it's battery related but the most recent video I saw of this siren shows that it was eventually fixed.Sirens in Davidson County are tested on the first Saturday of the month at Noon for a minute.Enjoy, and as always comment, like, and subscribe for more. FS Model 5BT & Darley Model 2 | Alert & Short Attack | Chrisney, IN (Tornado/Fire Siren Test) DSRX100 2021-03-15 | Copyright 2020 | Brandon Mendel (Reuse allowed with permission). Originally Recorded 12/31/2020After seven years, I decided to revisit Chrisney and hear their unique Model 5/Model 2 duo. The sirens still look freshly painted like last time. But now they can be remotely controlled via radio. At the moment, only the 5BT can activate remotely. The second test was a manual activation done from inside the fire station. Eventually both will be hooked up via radio. You can find this pair of sirens between Chrisney's town hall and fire department on Chestnut Street.Sirens in Chrisney are tested annually but they're hoping to move to more routine, monthly testing. Spencer County's siren system is controlled by different entities. In the north side of the County, sirens are set off by the Carter Fire District and tested every first Sunday of the month at Noon. Rockport, St. Meinrad, and Gentryville are tested weekly every Tuesday evening at six. A big thanks goes to John with the Chrisney Volunteer Fire Department for setting this off. Originally Recorded 6/6/2020So here's a rather interesting setup from a rather uninteresting siren. About a couple years ago I caught this siren on streetview and I couldn't believe my eyes. The lean on this 2001 was so comically bad, I had to see this for myself. As you can see, it's still leaning and still working. Towards the end, you can really see how bad the lean is compared to the water tower in the background. I'm just curious if the next big wind storm will knock this down.You can find this lone 2001 near the Greenville water tower at the end of Clark Street. Sirens in Floyd County are tested on the first Saturday of the month at Noon.
