Fallout Was Sold, Not Saved | The Rise and Fall of Interplay
updated
Quintet was formed by Masaya Hashimoto and Tomoyoshi Miyazaki, Nihon Falcom veterans behind the Ys series. They often collaborated with composer legend Yuzo Koshiro, the man behind Streets of Rage's addictive soundtrack.
Over the past year, I fell in love with the story and games of Quintet. I hope that after watching this video, you will too.

Let's trek into the treacherous wasteland of Athas, evading the wicked grasp of Silt Horrors, the tyranny of Sorcerer-Kings and the highwaymen of the city-state of Tyr.
Dark Sun takes place in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world that plays out like Mad Max meets Dungeons & Dragons, where water, flora, fauna and hard metals are precious and scarce. A sort of "medieval Fallout" with magic and psionic powers, Dark Sun is a memorable tabletop game setting that inspired two classic DOS RPGs that still hold up today, for those with the patience to see it through.
Developed by Strategic Simulations, Inc. as their first great departure from the Gold Box RPGs that made them successful, Dark Sun lives in the memories of its fans, and hopefully this video will convince more players to give it a try.
This video aims to also serve as a beginner's guide to help you through the tribulations of Athas, in your grim quest to save the world…or what's left of it!

Let’s sit down with @Zhakaron and @Patrician to discuss the rippling effect of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. How did Skyrim affect the industry, how did its console-focused streamlining of the series reflect on other RPG series, such as Dragon Age, The Witcher and other RPG series that seemed to follow in the footsteps of this massive financial success?
We’ll be discussing The Elder Scrolls evolution, as well as many related RPGs. Was this a coordinated effort to expand their audiences into the mainstream, or was this trend more of a “stand-alone complex,” where various developers and publishers independently landed on similar game design conclusions?

Eighteen months in the making, and 1,400+ hours of research, writing, recording, AI-upscaling, animating, sourcing and editing later, the anticipated Part 3 of my cyberpunk documentary miniseries is here!
THE EVOLUTION OF CYBERPUNK covers novels, comics, animation, television, film, games, philosophy, hacking, VR, simulation theory and The Matrix phenomenon. Learn about the second trilogy from cyberpunk author William Gibson: Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties, and discover the brilliant satire and criticism of modern America in Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.
Jack in to cyberspace with the origins of hacker culture, its impact on us during the advent of the internet, and how that informed our worldview of the information superhighway, and films such as The Net, Hackers and Johnny Mnemonic. What inspired us to invest so much into virtual reality, from the Virtual Boy, to injecting VR cameos into movies and shows like Serial Experiments Lain, Wild Palms, The Lawnmower Man, and others? And how did monumental video games such as System Shock, System Shock 2 and Bioforge influence us as players?
For the send-off, how did philosophy and existentialism surmount in such treasures as Philip K. Dick's novels and research, eXistenZ, Dark City, The Thirteenth Floor, and most notably of all, The Matrix? In summary, we will try to answer the eternal question, "Are we living in a computer simulation?".

Tonight we're going to be discussing the decades-long evolution (or devolution) of the role-playing game. How RPGs have lost a lot of the choice, meaningful decisions and freedoms of previous games, and how many other genres have borrowed from RPGs to a point where the label has become almost meaningless.

I must have played it recently (within the last several months)
3. Still Enjoyable Today:
Must still be enjoyable in its current state (no defunct MMOs, etc.)

Released in 2018, Dustwind brings the combat-focused tactical gameplay of Fallout: Tactics, and brings in online co-op and PvP modes, as well as official and community-designed maps. To top it all off, the game features a plug-and-play community map rating system, a la Little Big Planet -- powered by Steam Workshop!
I highly recommend this game, though I do have some misgivings with its lack of single-player campaign.

Let's take a journey through time, from the beeps and bloops of the 1980's to the modern day in PLAYING GOD - a documentary covering 30 years of god simulation games. From industry legends like Peter Molyneux and Will Wright, to independent or even solo games, the God Game has been a beloved but underappreciated genre that deserves a thorough exploration.
This is my 2nd feature-length video and my longest and most ambitious production to date, so I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did making it!

The first game covered in this series is Insomnia: The Ark, a game by Studio Mono, set on a decrepit space station where factions, clandestine operatives and supernatural forces collide in an unusual but compelling setting. Borrowing elements from old-school Fallout, and new-school RPGs like Mass Effect, this game is one to keep an eye out for.
Full disclosure: I was given a Steam key for this game free of charge by the developer.

In researching my last video about the underappreciated 1997 action-adventure game, Dark Earth, I learned a lot more about the development of the game, and hints at the many planned trans-media expansions into its world. A big-budget movie, a TV show, a tabletop role-playing game, multiple sequel projects and more.
In my investigation, I located Guillaume Le Pennec, who oversaw the game's production as well as wrote the worldbuilding "bible" of which the franchise was based upon. We did an audio interview, and I used much of his insight when completing my scripted video about the game. Though some of this information may be redundant with that video now, I still find our talk insightful, and it's a fascinating curiosity to hear first-hand how a now-obscure game NEARLY became a household name around the entire world.
I hope you enjoy this honest conversation between a lover and documentarian of games and one of its more talented creators.

#DarkEarth #AloneInTheDark #AdventureGames
Let's step into the universe of Dark Earth: an ambitious 1997 action-adventure game by Kalisto Entertainment. Part true adventure game, part action/thriller, with strong influences from Alone in the Dark (shared by the popular Resident Evil).
Though we only saw the PC game state-side, this was prepped to be a massive franchise, with two editions of a tabletop RPG released in France, a tie-in novel written, and multiple cancelled sequels and spin-offs, with a TV show with Ridley Scott, a movie deal with Steven Spielberg attached, and even an animated cartoon in the works, but never finished.
In this longest episode of Not Forgotten yet, we'll explore what made this setting and game so compelling, and why we should remember it, lest it be forgotten.

While we all know about action adventure classics like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past, similar games might be unknown or overlooked as a half-baked knock-off without the clever design that made those games great.
What if I told you that Alundra is as close as we may ever get to a true Zelda: A Link to the Past successor with even more clever and mind-bending puzzles and challenges that set a new standard in the genre? Well let’s take a look at this underexposed classic by Matrix Software and Working Designs and see what I am talking about in this episode of Not Forgotten.
You can still buy Alundra for the PS3, PSP and PS Vita digitally on the Playstation store:

Inspired by the 1985 classic Chaos: Battle of Wizards, for the ZX Spectrum and designed by Julian Gollop and Mythos Games, the creators of Chaos and X-COM: UFO Defense, this fantastic journey features a beautiful Celtic soundtrack, gorgeous claymation work and a dazzling spell-slinging adventure. But why has it fallen from the pages of video game history? And why were its merits abandoned for the more traditional Chaos: Reborn?

Julian LeFay is one of the most important people in the early development of The Elder Scrolls as a series, sometimes even credited with being its father. This is due to his high profile during the early development of the series, and comments by Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman that LeFay "spear-headed the initial development". This was really needed as, up until that time, Bethesda had never released a Role-Playing Game. Eventually, Arena developed into the most award-winning Role Playing Game of 1995.
Julian now goes by Julian Jensen, and he was kind enough to interview for a few hours while we talked about his origins, his long history with the Elder Scrolls and Terminator games at Bethesda Softworks, as well as his vision that was to be Morrowind and the continuation of the series he had a major hand in creating.
LeFay was born on Oct. 30, 1965 in Denmark. During the early 1980s, he began programming and quickly became known as one of the best Amstrad and Amiga programmers during the high period of Commodore's success. His programs have won numerous industry awards in virtually every category. Julian LeFay joined Bethesda shortly after its creation in 1987 and eventually became Chief Programmer. At this time, he was considered by many as one of the key technical people in the entertainment multimedia industry as he combined a rare mix of programming knowledge and computer language skills with proven design capability and music composition experience.

In the third and final chapter of a 3-part Troika Games retrospective, I will take a look at Leonard Boyarsky, Jason Anderson and Tim Cain's RPG classic, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. This series will cover all three games they developed, how they innovated, what didn't succeed and and attempt at the age-old question: "What happened to Troika Games?"
In Vampire: Bloodlines, you play a fledgling vampire caught in a complex power play between the Camarilla, the rebellious Anarchs and the dangerous Sabbat; in a World of Darkness, filled with betrayal, ambition and politics of the night. Based on the beloved pen and paper game. Let's take an in-depth look at what made this game great but also what destroyed its chances of success in this Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines retrospective.

In the second of a 3-part Troika Games retrospective, I will take a look at Leonard Boyarsky, Jason Anderson and Tim Cain's RPG classic, The Temple of Elemental Evil: A Classic Greyhawk Adventure. Episode two is a Temple of Elemental Evil review, where I cover the historical importance of the game, the origins of its mechanics and rules systems. An extensive retrospective analysis of 20 years of Fallout from a dedicated fan since the very first game. From the humble beginnings of Interplay's Fallout, to the Black Isle Studio masterpiece Fallout 2, the spinoffs and failures in-between (Fallout Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and the 'Van Buren' project), its long-awaited Bethesda-developed reboot: Fallout 3, the revered sidestep Fallout: New Vegas by Obsidian Entertainment, and finally to the latest entry Fallout 4 and what the future may hold for the Fallout franchise.
Join me on this adventure to find out where the series got it right, where it missteped, and why I believe that despite technological improvements and innovations over the years, the series has taken a turn for the worse both in atmosphere and setting, and its focus on simplification over player choice, agency and freedom.
And hopefully you'll agree with me on my treatise that modern Fallout isn't Fallout.

Advent Rising -- combining the interstellar conflict and space magic of Mass Effect with the colorful animated look and heart of a Pixar movie. Part Star Wars, part Starship Troopers, the “spirit” of the game has outlived its disappointing release and remains in the hearts of many as one of the underappreciated and overlooked games that deserved another chance.
So what led to this game’s failure? How can some love it despite glaring flaws, or despise it ignoring its compelling theme? And how can we learn from this artifact of history to make for a better future for like games? Let’s find out in this episode of Not Forgotten.

A comprehensive breakdown of the Square JRPG, Chrono Trigger, its unusual mid-quel, Radical Dreamers on the SNES, as well as the Playstation classic, Chrono Cross. What made Trigger so compelling? How did it do time travel so well? And what happened to the anticipated sequel, rumored to be called Chrono Break?
Let's take a look, and perhaps we'll learn a few things about the Chrono trilogy and maybe enjoy a little nostalgia along the way.

In this 30-minute FF7 history lesson, let's take a good hard look at what this legendary game had to offer, and why it is still remembered as one of the most influential masterpieces of the generation. First in a two-part in-depth FFVII retrospective, where we delve into the beginnings of Final Fantasy on the NES, all the way through Final Fantasy 7 on the Playstation, the best-selling and most treasured game in the franchise. Learn about the spin-off games such as Dirge of Cerberus for the PS2, and Crisis Core (PSP), as well as the game's inspiration to the gaming industry.
We will explore the 2005 movie sequel Advent Children, the game's now 20-year old graphic style and mechanics, and what this means to the upcoming FF7 Remake.
Story and battle mechanics research excerpted from Patrick Holleman's 'Reverse Design: Final Fantasy 7':

What if I told you that a "looter shooter" with 6 unique classes, procedurally generated maps, multiplayer hubs, competitive PvP arena came out two full years before Borderlands, and was headed by the creators of the Diablo series?
I'm now going to do my best at dissecting what Hellgate did right and arguably better than other first-person action RPGs like Borderlands, Shadow Warrior 2 and Destiny, while I also do a bit of sleuthing to see why it failed to grasp the attention, reception and audience it deserved.

Let's turn our clocks back to 1999 and re-experience The Wheel of Time PC game, one of the few visual adaptations of Robert Jordan's series of the same name.
What makes this game stand out from others in the genre is that more than half of the Ter'Angreal you can collect are supportive or utility-based, and due to their consumability, they provide an ever-shifting playing field, where you have to meet each new situation with new tactics and abilities depending on your resources at hand. This helps create a dynamic sort of gameplay which continually changes throughout the campaign.
That combined with compelling and unique multiplayer modes such as Citadel (a base-building strategy/FPS hybrid), The Wheel of Time has a lot to offer those looking for a hidden gem from the shooters of old. Let's take a look.

I got the game to run near-perfectly when I set the EXE file to run in Windows XP (Service Pack 3) compatibility mode, with "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" checked (IMPORTANT).

A video about the 1996 Elder Scrolls game, Daggerfall, and comparing it to its more popular successors like Skyrim. While its technical prowess is outright prehistoric by today's standards, if you look past its dated visuals, you will discover the many concepts and mechanics at play in this game that have not only been virtually untouched in other franchises, but even in future games of this series.
So what could future Elder Scrolls games learn from their past? Let's take a look.

GETTING DIABLO II TO RUN PROPERLY:
1. Install Diablo II (and LOD if available) normally.
2. Download and install the latest patches from Blizzard:

3. Follow this tutorial to get graphics acceleration, lighting and perspective to work just as it did in 2000:

4. I highly recommend starting LAN game even if playing solo. This enables unlocked framerate so your mouse cursor isn't running at 25fps.
