In this video I'll show you the finer points of using a bow drill to make friction fire. The old adage of "rubbing two sticks together" isn't far off! I'll make a complete friction fire kit using just a knife and my boot lace. For this kit I'm using elderberry for the fireboard, aka hearth board, and the spindle. I also collect fatwood, process the tinder bundle, and give you some important details for the friction fire making process. This is just another one of those survival skills that's fun to learn. I Baked Bread in a HOLE! | Wilderness Cooking | WILD YEAST Clay Hayes 2023-06-24 | There's nothing quite like fresh baked homemade sourdough bread but in this week's wilderness cooking video we're going about the bread making process a little differently. To start with, I'll show you how to make a primitive mud oven, aka earth oven from locally sourced materials. Then I gather wild yeast from Aspen bark to make sourdough starter. This earthen oven is constructed with a cob mixture of mud and grass formed over a kind of "upside down" basket weaved of flexible twigs. Once the mud is dry enough to hold it's shape, I built a fire inside to dry and harden the oven. Earth oven primitive cooking is actually quite easy once you get the hang of it. Just heat the earthen oven with a fire, rake out the coals, let it come down to the correct temperature, and put your food in to bake. I made homemade biscuits, sourdough wild yeast bread, and blueberry scones. Earth ovens are a fun bushcraft project and quite useful in a wilderness living or long-term survival situation. What does 5000 YEAR OLD Chewing Gum Taste Like? Lets find out! Clay Hayes 2023-06-17 | I recently came across an article describing wads of chewed up birch tar dating to nearly 6000 years ago. They were unearthed in Denmark during an excavation of an ancient home site. The author speculated that these wads were some sort of primitive chewing gum so, of course, I had to try it out. In this primitive skills video, we'll go through the entire process of rending birch tar or birch oil from the bark of western birch which are closely related to paper birch. Birch oil is one of the oldest known adhesives. It's a powerful antiseptic, primitive waterproofing and wood sealer, leather preservative and conditioner. It was used to patch cracks in pots and waterproof leather in ancient Rome. With all those uses, knowing how to make birch tar could be a valuable survival skill for long term wilderness living. In this video I'll go over some of the best knives I use for bushcraft, survival, and hunting. Some of these knives - like the Morakniv Companion, Leatherman P4, and Condor Parang - you might have seen in previous videos, but I'll show a few that you may not have seen. I talk about the differences between fixed blade knives and folding pocket knives, as well as multitools like the Leatherman. While there is no "best bushcraft knife" or "best knife for survival" for every situation, some are more versatile than others. Some are good at chopping and others carving or geared more towards hunting and skinning. What you choose will depend on what you need from your knife on a day-to-day basis. You wont believe this BUSHCRAFT KAYAK Build | Minimal Tools ASMR Clay Hayes 2023-06-03 | One of the most valuable survival skills is being able to figure out how to use the tools and natural resources you have available. And if you need to get out on the water then a bushcraft boat is in order. This week we're using minimal hand tools and some woodworking skills to build a bushcraft skin on frame kayak with nothing but a tarp, a mora knife, a small folding saw, and some bank line. I made the kayak ribs from green oceanspray that I peeled, bent around a tree, and tied in place. After a day of drying in the sun, they held their shape and I tied them into the hoops that would form the ribs of the kayak. The kayak frame slats are made from western red cedar, split from a tree that was blown down during a storm. I used the mora knife and wedges to split off the long slats which were then shaved to size and shape before being lashed to the ribs. The paddle was also made from a large split piece of western red cedar. To make things easier I made a bushcraft vice and draw knife to help shape the pieces. For the skin I used an inexpensive tarp. The frame is quite sturdy and very light weight. Total weight of the kayak is probably no more than 15lbs as I can easily balance it in one hand with my arm extended. The tarp kayak paddles great and tracks through the water with ease. Surviving the WORST Storm of My Life on a Bear Hunting Trip in Idaho! Clay Hayes 2023-05-27 | It's spring bear hunting season in the western states and this week, Coye and I gear up to go backpacking and camping in the Idaho wilderness for a few days. The gravel road to the trailhead was snowed in to we ended up cross country hiking for a few miles before intersecting the main trail. There's still a lot of snow in the high country but the south slopes are baring off and greening up which should draw in the bears. We set up camp on an open ridge hoping to have a good glassing point for early morning and late evening. Although the weather was calling only for a slight chance of rain, we soon realized the weather channel had it very wrong. We reinforced the tent stakes and buttoned up camp as ominous clouds built on the western horizon. Shortly after nightfall, thunder and lightning started moving closer. When the storm finally came, it hit with incredible force, driving rain and wind into the tent and threatening to blow it away. Lightning popped all around and thunder crashed so loudly we had to cover our ears. We were within arms reach but had to yell to communicate with each other. It was the absolute worst storm of my life while camping. When we set out, camping in a thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rain wasn't in our plans. Is this the BEST Survival Bow? - Penobscot Primitive Bow Clay Hayes 2023-05-20 | One of the things I love about primitive bows and bow building is the seemingly countless variations of this simple and effective primitive weapon. Primitive cultures from all around the world came up with bow and arrow designs to suit the materials and demands of their regions. In areas of the world where "good" bow wood is difficult to find, the Penobscot Bow design allows us to build high performance primitive bows capable of taking big game like deer or elk. The Penobscot design is essentially a variation of the cable backed bow used by several primitive peoples in the far north where high quality selfbow wood is hard to find. In addition, many species of wood can be force dried and fire hardened to yield even better performing archery equipment in a very short time which is exactly what you need for the ideal survival bow. Bushcraft Bucksaw - an easy DIY wilderness hand saw Clay Hayes 2023-05-13 | Whether you're just getting into bushcraft and survival, or you're an old sage, a good handsaw is indispensable in the wilderness. From survival shelter building and cutting fire wood to light weight backpacking, a good saw's usefulness is undisputable. In this week's video I'll show you how to build an easy DIY bushcraft bucksaw using just a Leatherman multitool and basic bucksaw blade. Bucksaws are great because all you really need is the light weight and flexible saw blade. The rest can be built on sight with natural materials found in the forest. The sawblade can be rolled up and stored in a tin cup or bugout bag. Taking an hour or so to build a bucksaw will make shelter building go much faster. It’s like BOWHUNTING under water! FREEDIVE SpearFishing Catch & Cook Clay Hayes 2023-03-04 | This week we're back in the Caribbean foraging for dinner form the ocean! We're freedive spearfishing with a pole spear for reef fish. Grunts, snapper, jacks, and whatever else we find. Spear fishing with a pole spear is a lot like traditional bowhunting. You've got to get very close to the fish to get a shot. You've got to move slowly and be part of the environment. One of the coolest thing about freediving is all the other animals you see along the way. Sea turtles, eels, and eagle rays are just a few. When you start training in free diving, you've got to push your body way beyond what's comfortable. When you can put the screaming urge to breath out of mind, the mammalian dive reflex kicks in and your heart rate slows. I got a BOBCAT with my Stickbow! Catch Clean Cook Clay Hayes 2023-02-18 | While out on a recent trip to south Texas, bowhunting hogs and javelina, I got a bobcat with my stickbow. I don't do much predator hunting but didn't want to let the chance pass. I tucked into the tall grass and squeaked out a predator call with my mouth and hand. After a short wait a big tom bobcat appeared crouched in the grass just 10 yards away. A few more quiet squeals like a rodent and the wild cat crouched and stalked closer. He turned to walk away and I drew my fire hardened hickory selfbow, squeaked once to stop him, and let the arrow fly. When I started the day, a bobcat catch and cook was the last thing on my mind. But with the cat on the ground I figured I'd give it a try. I've cooked and eaten mountain lion which is fantastic but I'd never had bobcat. I skinned it out and turned it over to Liz. SKUNK PIGS! Traditional Bowhunting Javelina Clay Hayes 2023-02-11 | This week we're back down in the south Texas brush country bowhunting javelina along the US/Mexico border. Javelina are interesting little critters that look similar to wild hogs but are actually a completely different genus. They have a scent gland on their back and smell a bit rank which earns them the name skunk pig. Because of that smell, most folks think they're wild game not fit to eat but I'm out to prove that wrong in this catch clean cook bowhunting vid. Bowhunting TEXAS HOGS - Spot and Stalk CATCH & COOK Clay Hayes 2023-02-04 | This week we're heading down to the south Texas brush country, bowhunting Texas hogs and javelina along the US/Mexico border. You'd be hard pressed to find a better place to bow hunt wild hogs with a traditional bow. The open brush and prickly pear flats are perfect for spot and stalk hunting. Building a Snakey Osage Orange SelfBow - Start to Finish Clay Hayes 2023-01-21 | This week we're back with another traditional bow building video, building a snakey osage orange selfbow from start to finish. We'll start with a seasoned osage bow stave and use a draw knife to remove the bark. Then we chase a ring to get the bow's back to one single growth ring. I'm using a very basic bow building tool kit on this one - for the most part just a draw knife and farrier's rasp. I'll take you through laying the bow out, drawing the limb profiles, roughing out the bow and final tillering. When we're all done I strap on a bow quiver, load it up with arrows and head out to the pasture to shoot a few arrows. This longbow has slightly reflexed tips but you could use the same heat bending techniques to make a recurve bow if desired. For the most part this is an ASMR video but you should be able to see what's going on if you want to use this as a guide for building your own osage longbow. Winter Bow Hunting and Wall Tent Camping - SPOT and STALK Clay Hayes 2022-12-24 | Snow is piling up in the mountains and, for me, that means it's time for late season bow hunting whitetail deer in the western mountains. Bowhunting whitetail deer on the ground with a traditional bow is about as tough a hunt as you'll find. Spot and stalk on these wary animals isn't a high odds technique but it sure is fun. THIS is Elk Hunting! FLINTLOCK Catch and Cook Clay Hayes 2022-12-04 | I love bow hunting elk. But as hard as I try, I can't always notch my elk tag during the September archery season. Luckily I've got the option to get back in the mountains in November for a late season muzzleloader cow hunt. I like bugling bulls as much as the next guy but THIS is elk hunting! The country is big and the elk, plenty. The problem is getting within flintlock range of these big herds without being spotted. Let's see if we can put together a little elk hunting catch and cook! Traditional Bow Hunting Catch and Cook in Deep Snow NO SHELTER Clay Hayes 2022-11-26 | This week I head to the mountains for an overnighter traditional bow hunting catch and cook and solo camping in deep snow. I want to test out the Siberian log fire so I'm taking only my sleeping bag and pad. Since I have no shelter and the temperature is well below freezing, I construct a bed of conifer boughs to sleep on. Although not a how to video, I'm sure you'll pick up some cold weather camping and winter bushcraft tips in this winter survival video. If there's enough interest I'll do some more snow camping this winter. Overall I was impressed with how the Siberian log fire performed. Dakota Fire Pit VS Swedish Torch - Which is BETTER? Clay Hayes 2022-11-12 | One of the best thing about making bushcraft and survival skills videos is that it pushes me to try new things. This week I'm comparing the Dakota Fire Pit and the Swedish Torch to see which one will boil water faster. If you want to up your camp fire game, you'll want to add these camping hacks to your bag of tricks! Both of these fire techniques are supper efficient in terms of fuel consumption and both are useful in their own ways. I start by showing how to make a dakota fire pit with minimal tools, then we use the axe to create a simple swedish torch. Building a Bamboo Backed Ipe Longbow - Start to Finish Clay Hayes 2022-11-06 | Learning how to build a longbow from a board is a great way to get into archery and bow making. Board bow building is relatively inexpensive and you can often find the materials at a specialty hardwood store or even the local hardware store. Anyone that is into woodworking should have all the tools necessary. This week I'm building a bamboo backed ipe longbow. The Ipe came from Dustin over at the Mainly Primitive channel. The bamboo came from 3RiversArchery.com. The other pieces like the handle laminate and tip overlays I already had laying around the shop. This video shows the process start to finish from laying out the bow, cutting the pieces to shape, tapering a power lam, and glueing everything up with EA-40. A lesson in Self Reliance- Fens First Deer Hunt Clay Hayes 2022-10-29 | There are many milestones in a hunter's life. But going deer hunting for the first time is one you'll always remember. Fen turned 10 this year which is the minimum age for hunting big game in Idaho. He's put in the time to pass hunter's ed and has a pocket full of tags. After spending some time shooting the rifle (7mm-08) we get up early and head to one of the neighboring farms to see if we can find any whitetails in the ag fields. I sometimes get comments from well meaning but naïve folks who think hunting is a cruel, antiquated activity motivated by bloodlust. But when you live close to the land as we do, hunting is a way of life. It's how we feed ourselves, with wild game, and stay grounded in the life and death struggles that happen all around us. Building a Yew Crossbow from Scratch Clay Hayes 2022-10-22 | This week I'm mixing it up with a recurve crossbow build. We'll be using an old board and a junk piece of Pacific Yew left over from building a longbow. With just scrap materials and hand tools we're building a yew crossbow from scratch. Although I've build hundreds of selfbows, longbows and recurves, this is the first crossbow I've ever attempted. It was a fun project and definitely not the last one I'll build. Anyone with basic woodworking skills and a few simple tools could build a simple crossbow like this in a day. I'm pretty impressed with the performance of the wooden crossbow. The cast and penetration on a foam target isn't nearly as good as one of my longbows but for hunting at close range on small to medium game, it should work just fine. Heck, I may even build one and take it hog hunting this winter. If you're into gaming, you might see something similar in the games Elden Ring or Albion online (I have no idea what that is but it's a pretty popular search term haha...). In this video I'll show you several ways to make an ultralight backcountry block and tackle capable of up to 4:1 MA. I'll start by using just paracord to create a theoretical 3:1 Z Rig, then we'll add in a few carabiners to reduce friction and create a more efficient system. Finally I'll use some light weight pulleys for the most efficient lifting system. Using these techniques, most hunters will be able to lift heavy elk quarters and tie them into a tree for better air flow or to get them out of reach of bears and other predators. Since it's very light weight, it's perfect for backpacking or just to have in your hunting day pack. You could even lift an entire whitetail buck for skinning and quartering if you wanted. Our 2022 Archery Elk BOW HUNTING Setups - Longbow and Compound Clay Hayes 2022-08-25 | Archery Elk Hunting season is right around the corner and in this archery gear video I'll go over out 2022 bow hunting setup. As always, I'll be shooting a hand made wooden self bow. This one is a fire hardened hickory longbow that I made this past winter. The draw weight is 63lbs at 29". 9 KNOTS that solve PROBLEMS - Camping, Bushcraft, & Survival Clay Hayes 2022-08-18 | If ya can't tie a knot, tie a lot! Nah, we can do better than that. In this video I'll go over several knots that everyone should know and a few more that come in mighty handy in certain situations. We'll start with how to tie a bowline knot and truckers hitch. I use these two knots almost daily for everything from camping and bushcraft to lashing a load down on a pickup truck. The taut line hitch is a handy one when tying the edges of a tent or setting up for tarp camping. I use a halter hitch for securing a line or rope to a tree and anywhere else I need a quick release knot. The clove hitch is another great knot for securing a line around a tree. If you add a quick release tag, it's super easy to untie as well. The uni knot is very useful for situations where you're binding poles or other places that you don't want to come loose. It's also a common fishing knot. I use a timber hitch a lot when pulling logs and gathering firewood. The prussic knot is one I use only rarely but it really shines when you need a knot that will slide freely but lock down when a force is applied to it, such as when climbing or tree stand safety lines. And last, but not least, the sheep shank. I use this one to shorten a long rope into a more manageable length. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. Warm and Dry Bushcraft Survival SHELTER with FIREPLACE Clay Hayes 2022-08-11 | In a long term wilderness living or survival situation, there’s never enough time for prepping for winter. We’re starting with a solid primitive shelter. Join Fen and I as we build a bushcraft survival shelter with fireplace using cedar bark for roofing, and a clay cob mix for the fireplace. We start by collecting natural building materials from the forest, and come across some noteworthy things while we're exploring. Then we use dry cedar poles for the shelter frame and roof it with big slabs of tree bark. While collecting materials for the fireplace I nearly stepped on a western diamondback rattler and took a few minutes to relocate her. To build the fireplace, I used rock and clay to form the back wall, then mixed dry grass and clay into a cob mix. Cob will hold together much better than straight clay. I built a frame from flexible branches to support the cob while it was drying. The chimney was supported on a bundle of sticks that will burn out when everything is done. If you have clay to work with, this is a fantastic way to build a smoke free fireplace in your long term survival shelter. Building a Pacific Yew Recurve Self Bow - Start to Finish Clay Hayes 2022-08-04 | For this self bow building video I'll be starting with a seasoned log and taking you through the entire process of building a pacific yew recurve self bow. Pacific yew is very similar to the European yew that was historically used to make the classic English Longbow. We'll start by splitting out a good bow stave, removing the bark and cutting the stave o length. One of the great characteristics of this particular wood is the sapwood is very strong in tension and the heartwood is strong in compression. So by leaving a thin layer of sapwood on the back of this selfbow, we end up with a natural backing. This stave has a thick layer of sapwood so I thin this to about 1/8" thick. We then lay out the bow's limbs and handle, remove all excess wood with a draw knife and rasp and start tillering the bow. Tillering is the process or removing wood from stiff areas of the bow while skipping over weaker areas. This allows the limbs to bend evenly from side to side on a nice arc. Finally I cut in an arrow shelf as well as sand, steel wool, and burnish the wood before shooting my new primitive bow.Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. Live Tree to PRIMITIVE BOW in 24hrs - All Natural Materials Clay Hayes 2022-07-28 | For this week's survival skills video I'm going back to my roots! I'll show you how to build a primitive bow and arrows from a living tree in just 24 hours! For this survival bow I'm using serviceberry and force drying it over a fire to dry the wood enough to make a good selfbow. As the bow dries, I lower it down near the coals to fire harden the bow's belly. Some tree species will develop drying cracks if force dried but serviceberry handles it very well. The primitive arrows are made from ocean spray and force dried over the fire in the same way. I used stinging nettle to bushcraft a natural cordage bow string but didn't make it quite stout enough. It broke four times before I moved on to making a string of elk sinew. A sinew bow string is much stronger for the diameter. I'll have to give the nettle another try in the near future. The arrows were fletched with turkey feathers. I only used only natural materials and a hatchet and knife for the entire build.
