Iโve had a chance to spend a full day using the camera, thus giving me a really good first impressions of the camera. Normally I wouldnโt talk about a camera after only using it for a single day but considering how similar (nearly identical) this camera is to the Fujifilm X100VI, I feel more at ease giving you my thoughts. To summarize: I really wanted to love this camera but there are a few design choices that leave me questioning if they actually used the camera before manufacturing it. Considering Sophia and I have a Fujifilm X100VI in our possession and the striking similarities of the two cameras, itโs hard not to directly compare the two, specifically with the new Fujifilm XF 23mm f2.8 attached. Itโs clear this combination is intended to be compared. I plan on writing up a direct comparison between the two which Iโll add here once I do, but to keep it brief. Basically the body and ergonomics is essentially identical. Handling, size, and weight also basically identical. So itโs basically an X100VI with very little downside? Well, not quite. On paper and comparing notes, the camera has a lot going for it. If youโre unfamiliar these are similar to filters that come built into your camera that most manufacturers include. Names like โvivid,โ โsepia,โ or โdramatic.โ Typically these are all quite useless once you start photographing more regularly. The Nikon Z50 II actually includes quite a few of these itself with a bit more customization to decrease the intensity of the filter, giving you more usable results.Recipes are essentially the same but can be created by you or me (mine are free at the bottom of this article). No better time than the present though! Last month I bought the Nikon Zf and took a 2+ week road trip across the west snapping images on the Nikon Zf. Photography has this illusion that itโs easy, likely because itโs so accessible. Like right now, almost anyone can pick up a device and take a photo. They can create something, RIGHT NOW. The process of being a creator is a journey and to become good at photography requires a lot more time and effort than might appear on the surface. I recently picked up this book called โThe Dip,โ by Seth Godin while I was doing research for my creator life here on YouTube. Now I donโt agree with the approach to many points in this book, most notably Godin speaks a lot about only doing things if you want to be the best at them. If I look at the sentiment in good faith, it might just mean that itโs good to approach choices like youโre striving to be the best version of yourself within them. The issue is he approaches them a bit too black and white for me, and that there are so many things in life worth effort without any intention to be the best in the world at (such as photography)The most relatable portion of this book to photographers (and creators in general) is the name sake of the book - The Dip. Godin defines the dip as โthe long slog between starting and mastery.โ He says that โif itโs something worth doing, thereโs probably a dip.โThe Dip can be many things. It could be your own satisfaction in your work. It could be related to your business. Take my YouTube channel for example. Hereโs a graph of my views over the course of my career here. Notice something? THATS THE DIP. I suspect this is likely because the majority of people in that space are very technical and want to capture images in the flattest, purest ways possible. I must admit it feels a little wrong to put something in front of my lens that, for all intents and purposes, slightly reduces the sharpness and โpureโ quality of the images Iโm capturing. Is that such a bad thing though in todayโs world of pristine images? Something Iโve noticed in myself over the past couple years is focusing less on needing to capture the perfect image and instead how to create something that feels artistic. That feels a bit less about my technical ability and more about the story I have to tell. In doing so Iโve felt like in many ways the technology in photography is spoiling, it almost feels too easy. Thus the idea of bringing a bit of life back into my images has felt refreshing. In some ways iโve been doing this for years by reducing clarity in my images to make them feel a bit less digital. Recently Iโve been experimenting with these glow filters made by Maven, specifically their 1/4 and 1/2 intensity variants in a bunch of scenarios. Below I have some high res examples of using the filters in different lighting conditions. One thing to keep in mind is that youโll need to practice with these to learn how they effect your images. Sometimes I canโt even tell they are on my camera, other times they make the highlights bloom like a 1980โs soap opera.New to Photography? To do that youโll need to fully understand what exposure is and how to manipulate it properly using shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Most importantly weโll be covering how to use these settings to unlock your creativity in your photography. By the end you should have a good grasp on how to use manual mode (or aperture/shutter priority), understanding the exposure triangle, and even a great bonus tip to get exposure right using the histogram. Understanding exposure first before ever worrying about the creative aspects of your photography is important. This way you can learn one thing at a time. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind."Iโm lucky to be able to say that in my years of traveling full-time, Iโve rarely ever had something bad happen. The biggest challenges have always been internalโbattles of the mind rather than moments of crisis. And after today, when the dust settled, what had really happened? My gear got salty, I got very salty, and I found myself grappling with something I definitely did not anticipate - a wave of panic (pun intended) and navigating how to process it. Stepping into the unfamiliarโwhether itโs a place, an experience, or an ideaโis inherently daunting. We construct bubbles of safety in different areas of our lives. For some, itโs physicalโwe stay close to our hearths, within the comfort of the familiar. For others, itโs emotionalโseeking refuge in people, routines, and predictability. Many of my friends canโt comprehend why on earth Iโd ever opt into living in a vehicle, sleeping on the side of the road, or waking up in strange places. Yet for me those things invigorate me to shed my areas of comfort and experience the world in a different way. Now, Iโll admit, waking up wet and cold in the middle of nowhere isnโt my idea of a perfect morning - itโs not all glamorous. But after itโs all said and done, these are the memories and stories Iโll carry on for the rest of my life, hopefully to pass down even a fraction of that to someone else, or to spark even the smallest ember of curiosity in someone like you, whoโs kindly listening to me right now.Iโm unsure that my experience that day allowed me to leave any good behind like Bourdain says. Capturing correct exposure and allowing yourself to edit the image later.Yet so many beautiful and famous images we pass by on a daily basis don't follow this principle. They exist almost in complete darkness or brightness. They definitely are not following "correct exposure" rules and it leaves me wondering, have I been thinking about it all wrong this entire time? One thing that has hindered me personally is that it has been engrained in my brain that it's felt impossible to break the rule and push my images into darkness or allow them to remain bright. As a professional photographer I was only allowed to use my iPhone 16 Pro with zero editing. Sophia, being new to photography, chose to use her trusty Fujifilm X100VI which can take fantastic images right in camera. This competition was not easy and I struggled shooting on my iPhone 16 Pro for a myriad of reasons.A major strength of the Fujifilm X100VI is how easy it is to use once you've got it setup. The iPhone on the other hand was a bit more challenging, especially in winter weather conditions. This is something I did myself for years and still do it now, but also I spend a lot less time planning and more time just trying to get a general idea of places I can go while putting more emphasis on the exploration rather than the destination.In this episode I go in completely blind. I don't know a single thing about the places we are visiting let alone what they look like. The experience is both rewarding and challenging. This was something I became increasingly better at after living on the road considering I was visiting spots where you can't plan anything. The sum of those experiences allows us to explore our photography in an almost childlike way, seeing and experiencing things completely blind without any expectations.I cannot stress enough to let yourself do the same thing. It's always been the format most of us have shot in for decades and maybe it's time we look at a new format for the future. In this video I show you just how capable modern compression methods can be when editing raw images using the new JPEG XL standard. You still get all the benefits of a raw with detail retention, white balance adjustments, and overall image quality but at a fraction of the size. A staggering 90% reduction in many cases yet preserving every detail. Currently we cannot shoot with this method yet but we can apply it to our photos in the latest version of Lightroom. Iโm a landscape photographer who lives full time in my 4runner ross, and we just spent over 2 weeks in the great northern peninsula chasing icebergs. It was time for some new scenery and to head to a place Iโve never been, Labrador. My hope was to re-engergize myself with a new place, find some more icebergs to photograph, and ultimately just see whatโs over the horizon. While I did get to explore that new place, my biggest discovery was within myself. This is episode 3As I crossed the Strait of Belle Isle. I reviewed a few of my images from the last few weeks and contemplated what else Iโd hope to find in the coming days of my exploration to Labrador. I was mostly happy with the iceberg images I had captured thus far, especially given the conditions of the last week or so. Yet I wanted more, which always seems to be the sentiment of an artist? Actually I guess you could say, itโs what humans continually strive for in general. The pursuit of finding satisfaction never seems to end. Why is that? Why is it that no matter how much we accomplish, or the goals we cross, thereโs always another finish line to reach. I think about this a lot. Iโve made few videos that even touch on the subject, specifically defining success. Because in many ways you could say accomplishing your goals makes you successful. If I think about it too much, I start to get that sense of existential dread. Think about it though. If you realize this cycle never ends, as soon as we catch that carrot ahead of us, we already want another carrot. Why even try? An afternoon after the morning hike in El Chalten filled with food, cute animals, and good times between Sophia and I. She teaches us about Yerba Mate and her opinions on it's flavor experience. We get some Ice Cream and then head out to catch sunset where I break down how I captured a pretty challenging image. Sophia enjoys the clouds and teaches us a new photography technique that I think all of us will benefit from. The new morning we hike up that steep mountain again and experience quite a lot of wind. The photo I end up with isn't my favorite but still glad I get something from that morning. We barely catch sunset that night as the timing changed rapidly but still wind up with something worthwhile. Considering we had never been here, the idea was to keep it simple because trying to find any images in the dark is basically impossible thus we went to the waterfall. This was Sophia's first nighttime hike and she killed it! She even took a nap on a rock haha.Afterwards we scouted around for the following days shoots and ate some lunch. After heading back down the mountain we made a big lunch and then shot sunset on the road. Along the way we get up to a few shenanigans including some rough roads, guanaco photos, and trying some local food. Eventually we make it to the Perito Moreno Glacier and explore around on a very cold morning. The border crossing was very easy this direction thankfully as we had all our ducks in a row! Once we arrived, we made the decision to rent a hotel so that we could finally sleep with a bit of warmth and shower every day. Actually, Iโve spent years on this channel saying exactly this and Iโve realized I think Iโm entirely wrong, and by the end of this video Iโll change your mind too. Now donโt get me wrong, the person behind the camera still matters far more than the camera they are holding. However if the camera they are holding is a culmination or series of tools that inspired them to be doing what they are doing - it absolutely made them a better photographer. Itโs not the megapixels, dynamic range, the autofocus, or sharpness. Itโs that our cameras are an extension of our art. They are the brushes we love to paint with, the typewriter with the perfect balance, or the guitar with the perfect pitch. Comparing images through a video you might be watching on a screen the size of your phone, compression of video, or just the resizing of the images means you have to basically take my word for it. When it comes to photography quality, the most important deliverable when your work is completed is in print. So this year Iโve made the comparison even better by having images professionally printed on metal. And the best part? You wonโt even have to take my word for it because we are going to ask random strangers as they are walking by which image they think was taken by each camera. The results surprised me and I suspect they will surprise you too.This years test were a bit more difficult than last year for people to get correct.
