At six, after attending a performance of Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto, he declared his desire to become a pianist. His formal musical education began soon after, leading to his concert debut at the National Philharmonic Hall of Ukraine at age 12. He then moved to Kiev to study at the Kyiv Lysenko State Music Lyceum for gifted children, later continuing his studies in Israel with Arie Vardi at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv. Illia is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the Hannover Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien.Awards & Accomplishments:At just 22, Ukrainian pianist Illia Ovcharenko, winner of the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition, has made a significant impact on the piano world. Over the past eight years, he has won prizes at over 20 international competitions. The Gilmore is thrilled to announce the fall Rising Stars Series Gilmore Piano Festival 2023-07-31 | The Gilmore’s 2023-24 Rising Stars Series welcomes emerging classical and jazz pianists in Sunday afternoon recitals beginning September 10 with 2022 Gilmore Young Artist Janice Carissa, playing classical selections including the world premiere of a Carl Vine composition made possible with support from The Gilmore. In October, the Esteban M. Castro Trio plays jazz on October 8; Illia Ovcharenko plays classical piano on October 29; and the Sean Mason Trio wraps up the season playing original jazz compositions on December 3. Past performers presented at The Gilmore Rising Stars Series include Llang Lang, Igor Levit, and Emmet Cohen. All Rising Stars recitals are Sundays at 4 p.m. (EST) in the 180-seat Wellspring Theater in downtown Kalamazoo’s Epic Center. A reception following the concert is included. General admission tickets are $28, student tickets are $7; all performances will be livestreamed with pay-what-you-choose pricing. Clayton Stephenson / The Gilmore Rising Stars Series Gilmore Piano Festival 2023-02-06 | Named a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist, Clayton Stephenson won over audiences during his Gilmore premiere during the 2022 Festival. He has performed at BeethovenFest in Bonn and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and became the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022. Stephenson is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics at Harvard and a master’s degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory.At the Wellspring Theater, Clayton will be performing the following program.
