#flstudio #musicproductionWhy did everyone get this wrong? In The Mix2024-03-16 | Well, this was a video I didn't think I'd have to film! After 153,000 views, more than 1000 comments and dozens of email and DMs, I decided to share the result of the audio test in last weeks video. The comments section was almost a perfect split between people choosing A or B, with a minority sharing that they couldn't tell which one was high-passed.
While I had everyone focussed on A or B, the reality is that the high pass filter was turned on and off 4 times in each example. There was no switch at the cross between A and B although many people claimed to hear a big difference right at the transition point. This has been incredibly valuable for me and has made me entirely rethink how I present audio examples, before and after tests and plugin reviews on the channel. It has also shown me how deeply ingrained some audio myths are, through repetition over many years, and that this content is worth continuing. I'm learning more with each video too.
Let me know what topics you want me to cover next time!

FL Studio Users: The reason I would advise against using the "20/30Hz + 18kHz Cut" preset is because it has been brought to my attention that many users simply apply this when mastering and are not actually listening to the changes in the audio. Objectively, a 30Hz filter is far too high for mastering 99% of audio.

I recently discovered a free AI de-noising and re-reverb plugin called GOYO by Supertone AI. I have lots of noise reduction and audio restoration plugins but downloaded it out of curiosity. I ended up liking it far more than expected and wanted to share it with you too. On my system, it is a lightweight, real-time (low latency) noise reduction and reverb removal solution for video editing, music production, vocal recording etc.
It removes unwanted noise, hiss, hum, talking, traffic, (rivers!), wind, microphone bumps, construction work, room reverb, and echo from recordings with surprising quality. It's probably my favourite way to remove noise from recordings and make your voice sound more clear.

I've made hundreds of long-format videos here on YouTube. I wanted to challenge myself to try making some compact versions of my most popular videos. Hopefully, these are useful on their own or they might lead you to dive deeper into a specific topic!
I've been hesitant to create shorts/reels because I personally prefer long-format videos. However, I see the benefit in quickly introducing topics/techniques and tools without having to invest 10/20 minutes in a full video. So this is the start of me trying my best to create useful, high-quality shorts and reels!
For a more detailed tutorial, my full "Voice EQ" videos can be found on YouTube here: youtu.be/pjMCyLsRNigThe Problem With Online Mastering TutorialsIn The Mix2023-06-03 | The "problem" with mastering tutorials online is that it is very difficult to hear the subtle changes to the audio. Expert mastering tips and techniques are often given without a context and most (great!) tutorials are highly genre dependent. The result - you might not be able to accurately apply the tools and techniques to your own music. My solution to this is a 5 step mastering system that will give you consistent, repeatable results in any genre and using the skills you already have.
My usual long-form content includes many "before and after" audio examples and demonstrations. Learning to listen for these subtle changes takes many examples, lots of time and plenty of practise on your own music. I decided to outline the whole process here instead of wasting time on overly specific audio examples.
Save this video and watch it step by step when you next master your own music. View this as though you have a friend working with you as you master your own music. You donβt need to watch the whole video and try to remember everything, just take it step by step and youβll have an amazing master by the end.

Notes and Tools Used:
Throughout this video, I use some plugins for the examples. These are only a tiny selection of the possible tools you can use. However, some of the basic tools you need are listed below:
DAW or Audio Editor (They can all do this. Ableton, Pro Tools, FL Studio, Cubase etc) A dedicated editor such as iZotope RX is useful but not essential.
EQ - Any high-quality EQ with Mid/Side and Left/Right filters. Good options include TDR Slick EQ M, ProQ3 and Ozone Equaliser.
Compressor - A good compressor with as many controls as possible. Ideally controls over knee, peak and RMS release such as the free TDR Kotelnikov. Pro C2is a good premium option etc
Analogue Style EQ - Used for tone shaping, there are hundreds of free and premium options. Ideally with stepped 0.5 or 0.25 dB increments. These make it easier to dial in subtle amounts of processing.
Clipper - A clipper with a βSoftβ clipping mode. A free option is Venn clip although it is a little difficult to dial in. A trusted premium option is StandardClip by Sir audio, although I have not used it personally.
Limiter - Ozone Maximiser, Pro L2, Sonnox Oxford Limiter v2, TDR Limiter No6 GE (the new one) are all great options. There are so many to choose from, I prefer a limiter with as many controls as possible.
Transient shaper - A multi-band transient shaper such as BSA Reviver is a great way to bring back some dynamic range and punch to your master.
Loudness Meter - Your limiter might have a built in loudness meter, but I have always trusted the Youlean Loudness Meter 2 (Free or Pro). LUFS are simply a measurement of perceived loudness relative to the dB scale. LUFS are the primary loudness unit used during mastering to asses the average and short term loudness. However, dB True Peak is still used for the absolute loudness ceiling.
Reviver uses a completely new and unique transient processing algorithm to add depth, dimension and clarity to your mix. This is combined with finely tuned harmonic circuits to improve the tone and clarity of any sound source - Full mixes to individual tracks.
I've spent the last year designing, tuning and perfecting this processing and the response from professionals has been amazing! Revivers' unique processing is already giving users an edge in their mixes and masters.
Reviver is adaptive and intelligent, constantly reacting to your music to achieve the best tone possible. Its intuitive interface keeps you creative and focused on getting the best sound possible.

Please read below for information about how I compared them.
Good headphones should: 1) Provide an accurate, spacious sound stage to aid in mixing and mastering music. 2) Reveal low, mid and high frequencies without distortion so you can make quick production decisions. 3) Faithfully reproduce the dynamics and transient response of the material. 4) Reveal the true depth and image of audio material. 5) Feel comfortable on your head for many hours and be strong enough to withstand daily use.
I tested each headphone with a high-quality headphone amplifier and a standard MacBook 1/8 audio output. I referenced, mixed, and listened casually to each headphone over the course of many weeks and months to reach my conclusions.

Update 2023 - Camira and other fabric sellers are raising the price of Cara (possibly due to this video or possibly just price gouging). I no longer recommend Camira if the price stays high (Β£16 per meter right now).
Original - I use Camira fabrics. There sell lots of suitable options and my favourite is Cara in Black (code EJ138). You can find it much cheaper from local suppliers (hence why my price is lower in the video and I made an edit!)

It is important to have a good understanding of Stereo EQ to get the most out of Mid-Side EQ but it can be used by anyone of any ability.
I find that it is a good tool to help me do less damage and be more precise when mixing but it is certainly not essential in most situations. It can be used to create width, depth and space in a mix. Many mixers use this to create a 3D, spatial sound stage.
