Updates to BMW 3 Series, Refreshed Porsche 911 Details, & Electric Jeep Wagoneer S | Motor News MotorWeek 2024-06-22 | Our first story comes from BMW, debuting an update of their iconic 3 Series sport sedan…The internal-combustion 3 Series gets a little stronger for 2025. M340i models gain an improved powertrain: a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Horsepower and torque have risen slightly to 386 and 398 respectively.New chassis tuning has reportedly improved handling. Inside, the dual-screen setup is now powered by BMW Operating System 8.5. The 2025 M3 Competition with xDrive all-wheel drive sees a 20-horsepower increase, now 523 overall.Following up on our previous report of Porsche’s 911 hybrid, full details have emerged, along with the 992 generation’s first major refresh, including a new T-Hybrid powertrain. Found on the GTS model, this system uses a 3.6-liter boxer engine and a pair of electric motors; total output is rated at 532 horsepower and 449 pound-feet of torque. Changes to the 911’s iconic styling are limited. Inside, you’ll find a fully-digital instrument cluster and a start/stop button instead of a key…but still located to the left of the steering wheel.And our final big news comes from the Big Apple, where Jeep unveiled the all-new and all-electric Wagoneer S, their first global battery-electric SUV.It’s powered by a 100-kWh battery pack and a pair of electric motors, combining for 600 horsepower and six-hundred seventeen 617 lb-ft of torque. Jeep estimates over 300 miles of range on a full charge. Built on STLA-Large unibody platform, the Wagoner S is actually closer in size to a Grand Cherokee, measuring out to about 192 inches in length. 8,500-Mile Update in our Long Term 2023 Kia EV6 GT MotorWeek 2024-06-22 | We’re near the peak of the summer driving season, and our 2023 Kia EV6 GT is keeping busy, with the odometer winding past 8,500 miles over eight months of drive time.The seating position is fairly high since this is technically an SUV, but the way they lock you into place has it feeling more like a track car, and on the outside, it certainly looks like the ultimate performance wagon to us. And indeed, performance is still the main attraction of this ride.Temperatures have finally started to rise, which means we can now get the most out of this EV6 GT and its summer performance tires. The stickier rubber combined with all-wheel drive allows us to get on the power early and liberally out of our favorite back road corners. We still can’t quite treat it like an on-off switch because 545 ft-lbs of torque is plenty to get the rear end to step out. Recent night drives have revealed a few new things to us. The high-beams don’t seem as strong as they could be, and even at its lowest setting the head-up display can be more of a distraction than help. Nothing else to complain about inside, as we’ve gotten used to the multi-control touch-panel; rear seat passengers have plenty of room, and everything is holding up great with no noticeable wear. 29,000-Mile Update in our Long Term 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV MotorWeek 2024-06-10 | With spring comes the promise of warmer weather; that, along with the prospect of long drives in our 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, is enough to coax us out of our winter dens.With a recent Northeast road trip under its belt, we’ve added another 2,000 miles to the odometer. And we’ve seen fuel economy climb again, now at an average 29.3 mpg.Like all PHEVs, this Outlander shows off its sophisticated powertrain most during daily trips around town. As long as the battery pack has a charge, we barely hear from the gas engine unless there’s a need for full power. In that scenario, some of the sophistication is lost with the inherent drone of the continuously variable transmission. But once you’re up to speed, it’s right back to being comfortable and quiet.One newer complaint is that we wish the reverse camera was a little more high-res. On the contrast, one newish rave of ours is the head-up display. New Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Porsche 911 Hybrid & BMW M4 Competition Sport | MotorWeek Motor News MotorWeek 2024-06-01 | There have been a lot of exciting products coming from German brands lately. So, we’re starting with an off-roader with a lot of glitz, glamour, and a first-time powertrain…Mercedes-Benz adds a new edition to its iconic G-Class, and this one with has gone all-electric.The G EV trades a bi-turbo V8 for four electric motors, and a 116-kilowatt-hour battery, putting way more output to the dirt; 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. It keeps the G’s rugged ladder frame, independent front suspension and solid rear axle. We expect over-the-top off-roading, with the luxury to match.And now the excitement moves over to Porsche, which has just wrapped up development of the first-ever street-legal, gas-electric hybrid 911.It’s been rumored for quite some time, but now we have our first look at the 911 Hybrid. According to Porsche, the hybrid system used is performance-focused– and it shows. In testing, the new model was able to complete a lap of Germany’s famed Nurburgring 8.7-seconds faster than a comparable gas-only 911. The new 911 Hybrid was tested in all sorts of conditions, from the freezing cold and demanding heat, clocking over 3.1 million miles of development driving.And finally, our focus is on BMW where they haven’t forgotten their internal-combustion heritage with the release of a new M4 CS.It starts with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, tuned here to output 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. 8,000-Mile Update in our Long Term 2024 Mazda CX-50 MotorWeek 2024-05-25 | We might not call the CX-50 the best Mazda ever, but it is one of our favorites in recent times, and our Long Term tester continues to impress.No new issues have been jotted down in our log book over the short 1,300 miles since our last update, and we all agree that our previous raves still hold up. That is, the CX-50 feels like a true crossover between car and utility, with a drive experience that is classic Mazda!That means highly competent and sporty. Steering is the highlight, with an endearing sense of tightness. But we have to say that power delivery from the 2.5-liter turbo I4 is also delightful, packing up to 256 horsepower for plenty of “zoom zoom.” Fuel economy is equally satisfying, back up to 25.2 miles-per-gallon, just what the government says it should be.So yes, the CX-50 may not be the most memorable effort in Mazda’s history, but it’s good. Really good. And this five-month ride along has only made us extremely fond of this weekday-commuter, weekend adventurer even more. 8,000-Mile Update in our Long Term 2023 Kia EV6 GT MotorWeek 2024-05-25 | We’re into our seventh month of driving this 2023 Kia EV6 GT, and its high performance is still turning heads everywhere we go. It’s hard not to keep things fast paced in this EV6 GT, but sometimes you just gotta chill. I have to say the inherent quietness of the all-electric powertrain has enhanced the therapeutic effect that taking a drive already has on me. But if silence is an anxiety-inducer, Kia has these calming, pre-loaded soundtracks in their infotainment that have helped keep us centered. If this were a click-bait YouTube video, we’d splash “Best Kia Ever?” all over it; but it’s an update, so update we shall, with a trip to the dealer for an 8,000-mile service. What does that involve? Well, just routine car care checks on non-EV specific things like air pressure, brakes, filters, and wipers. RHO RAM 1500 Reveal & New Emergency Braking Regulations | MotorWeek Motor News MotorWeek 2024-05-20 | The off-road pickup truck segment is hot, and a new member of the Ram family is arriving on dealer lots soon.The 2025 Ram 1500 RHO is taking over the mantle as Ram’s off-road king.Like the entire 1500 lineup, the RHO ditches the HEMI V8 for the Hurricane Inline-Six. This high-output version is rated at 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque.The RHO features a unique, long-travel suspension, a full-time active transfer case, a low-restriction exhaust system, and plenty more.It’s sure to be a beast on the trail once it arrives later this year, starting around $70,000.And in safety news, new regulations that aim to put the brakes on auto incidents.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finalized new regulations requiring enhanced automatic emergency braking systems for all cars and light trucks.The rule, to be implemented by 2029, calls for systems far more capable than those common today. They must automatically stop and avoid a collision from 62 miles-per-hour when another vehicle is detected, and 45 miles-per-hour when a pedestrian is detected.
