It speaks of our values, our politics, our social and economic class, our education and, of course, we all would like to believe we have good taste and can recognize and appreciate “authentic” cuisine, prepared well. But, who decides what is and is not “authentic,” food, and how do we decipher an authentic dining experience from an inauthentic one? Holly Fann is an experienced food writer and restaurant critic. Graduate of The Culinary Institute of America and former chef and chef educator. Food journalist and food photographer with substantial experience in newspapers and magazines as well as online publications. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedxBeing differently abled is my superpower | Cathy Drennan | TEDxMIT SalonTEDx Talks | MIT professor Cathy Drennan talks about her journey as a dyslexic scientist. She learned to read the second time through sixth grade, but not by sounding out words. She learned to read by memorizing the shapes of words and by associating those shapes with pronunciations. Although experts warned that her intellectual disability would prevent her from graduating high school, she did graduate from high school, then college, and then she completed her Ph.D. As a professor at MIT, she investigates biological molecules called enzymes by determining their three-dimensional structures at atomic resolution. In other words, she is an explorer of the molecular world. This research requires expertise in shape recognition, something for which Professor Drennan excels; shape recognition is how she learned to read and how she has continued to read. Drennan is not a leading researcher at MIT despite being dyslexic, she is a leading researcher because of her dyslexia. Being differently abled is her superpower.
Professor of Biology and Chemistry Cathy Drennan combines X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy and other biophysical methods, with the goal of “visualizing” molecular processes by obtaining snapshots of enzymes in action.
Drennan earned her AB from Vassar College, and her PhD from the University of Michigan. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech, she joined the MIT faculty in 1999, and was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor (a teaching recognition) in 2006 and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator (a research recognition) in 2008. Drennan has led by example, dedicating herself to both research and teaching. Her educational initiatives include creating free resources for educators that help students recognize the underlying chemical principles in biology and medicine, and that train graduate student teaching assistants and mentors to be effective teacher–scholars.
Recently, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology chose Drennan as the recipient of the 2023 William C. Rose Award for her outstanding contributions to biochemical research and commitment to training younger scientists. Among her additional honors are the Everett Moore Baker Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Harold E. Edgerton Faculty Achievement Award, the Dean’s Educational and Student Advising Award, a Committed to Caring Award, and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). She has also been named an MIT MacVicar Fellow, an AAAS Fellow, an ASBMB Fellow, an Alfred P Sloan Fellow, a Searle Scholar, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.

Amo will also reflect on intersectionality of race and disability with short but powerful examples of how disabled people from non-white backgrounds are often further isolated by the whole community. Dr. Amo Raju has championed the rights of disabled people for over three decades as CEO of Disability Direct where he has led over 75 projects and generated in excess of £28m in income for the charity. Yet his journey to present day success was peppered with countless examples of society or his immediate environment doing everything possible to restrict opportunities. Despite navigating his own path and enjoying successes as a bhangra singer, politician and now author, Amo fought a secret battle with depression to the surprise of all around him. The publication of his semi-biographical book ‘Walk Like A Man’ has become an inspirative resource for many disabled people and is now being considered for adaptation to script.
