Learn more at http://ted.com/tedxWhen Conspiracy Theories Threaten Friendships | Wes Regan | TEDxSurreySalonTEDx Talks2024-06-29 | Wes Regan recounts conflict over conspiracy theories during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to insights on empathy and discourse. He delves into understanding why people believe in conspiracies and proposes focusing on shared emotions rather than facts to bridge divides. Drawing from personal experiences, he advocates for embracing dialogic and facilitative practices like "deep democracy" to address polarization fueled by misinformation. The talk encourages viewers to acknowledge the emotions and feelings behind conspiracy beliefs and offers a method called "distillation" to engage in constructive conversations. Ultimately, it emphasizes the importance of understanding and accepting differing perspectives to preserve democracy and foster meaningful dialogue amidst societal tensions. Wes has worked in urban planning and public health since 2009. During the COVID-19 pandemic he experienced and observed how misinformation and conspiracy theory beliefs were undermining the response to the pandemic. This led him to devote his Ph.D. research to examining the impacts social media, digital misinformation, and conspiracism are having on public policy discourse and formation today. In January 1999, the tragic death of Lt Col Philip Holmes’ first wife led to his resigning from a successful Army career to set up a children’s charity in her memory. He decided that his charity would work in Nepal, a country that he had never even been to before. He started this journey hopelessly underqualified and with tiny resources; the odds were firmly against him. But huge ripples of success flowed from this small and apparently hopeless start. Philip went on to live in Nepal where he rescued up to a thousand innocent children from imprisonment, from off the streets and from modern day slavery. He closed down two cross-border child trafficking routes permanently. And now he is confronting the existential threat from climate change and the crisis in nature from a similarly small start. Katia Moritz | TEDxUCDavisTEDx Talks2024-06-28 | In this talk, Dr. Katia Moritz tells us how extreme experiences can teach us so much about ourselves and how to deal with everyday challenges. She starts her presentation with a shocking story about a mother's love and her search for answers after being accused of having murdered her four children. She introduces us to Alex, his family, and herself, a board-certified psychologist. What is it to be Undiagnosed? Through their stories, Dr. Moritz explores the universal human need for connection and how those with undiagnosed conditions often feel isolated, disconnected, and misunderstood, although their suffering may hold the keys to the future of medicine. Today, information is being lost by the medical system, which doesn't have a procedure to collect and store the information from when an Undiagnosed patient dies. Opportunities for new discoveries, finding new illnesses, and new possibilities for treatments are being missed.
In her journey as an undiagnosed patient, Dr. Moritz learned that she could only navigate the uncertainties and challenges of living without answers through advocacy and community building, which led her to a bigger purpose. To live a better life, we´ll have to change our search for the WHY, replace that with a COMMA AND, learn to embrace uncertainty, build resilience, and, most importantly, find hope. E. Katia Moritz, Ph.D., ABPP, is a licensed psychologist in Florida, Utah, New York, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is also Board-Certified in Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology, the Chief Clinical Officer, and the founder of Neurobehavioral Institute (NBI) and NBI Ranch in South Florida. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedxSetting first-generation students up for success | Joel Ledford | TEDxUCDavisTEDx Talks2024-06-28 | Can you think back to that one teacher who made a difference? Teachers have the capacity to shape our lives, and it often just takes one special connection to inspire us to push our limits, explore new boundaries, and achieve our goals. This kind of connection doesn't happen spontaneously; it requires genuine care, trust, and partnership. As teachers and students, how do we find ways to actively engage in our learning, reflect on our strengths and weaknesses, and grow into lifelong learners? Using examples from my experiences in K-12 and higher education, Professor Joel Ledford shares how active approaches to learning and advising can help build a foundation for self-directed, reflective learning. Joel Ledford, an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Plant Biology, is dedicated to teaching and learning, drawing from a background in both K-12 and higher education. Collaborating with Professor Susan Keen in the Department of Evolution and Ecology, he developed a series of concurrent classes, known as 'co-classes,' aimed at supporting first-generation college students. How is it made? And is all milk made equal? In his presentation he gives the audience a quick world tour highlighting some of the strategies that different mammals have adapted to ensure their offspring survive in seemingly-inhospitable environments - all through the milk they produce! Never again will you think of that glass of milk, or that half and half in your coffee, the same way! And to think, every mammal on the planet depends on this milk-making strategy called lactation! Professor Russ Hovey was born in Australia and received his Bachelor’s in Agricultural Science from the University of Queensland, where he also became involved in the dairy industry. His enthusiasm for science led him to New Zealand to undertake a PhD at Massey University in lactation physiology. He then moved to Bethesda, Maryland to undertake a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health where he continued his work on the biology of breast development and breast cancer. After working at the University of Vermont in the Department of Animal Science he moved to UC Davis in 2007 where he is a Professor of Animal Science. His work is focused on understanding how the mammary glands of all species develop, how they make milk, and how they can be susceptible to developing cancer. His research has been supported by a range of agencies including the NIH, USDA, and Department of Defense. He also is the instructor for the introductory class for the Animal Science major and teaches a senior-level course in lactation physiology.
