I looked under a bunch of rocks until I found one that had a burrowing scorpion under it. Pablo, one of the meerkats, waltz over and smelled it! Hiding inside its burrow. He worked his legs and claws and extracted it with precision! Nicely, I was there recording it to watch this natural event take place.Meerkats are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plant and animal. Grubs, insects, fruits, scorpions and even snakes are on the menu of meerkats. Amazingly, meerkats have some immunity to regional snakes and scorpions. It's an adaptation like their cousins, the mongoose which also have immunity to certain snakes and scorpions.Meerkats are quite cute and smart but I emphasize how they are NOT pets and don't make good pets. Wild animals should be personal pets for folks. Rescues, rehabilitating ones for release, in a sanctuary because they can't be released (like found on a farm alone or parents killed) and certain quality zoos are the places where I agree a meerkat or wild animal could be housed and cared for. Pablo and Zulu are rescue meerkats that someone found alone and needed a home or would die. In this order it is Females, Food then Friends. Gabriel is a non releasable breeder at this Cheetah Breeding Center called Running Wild Conservation. Abi and her two cubs Kimi and Kayzer are there as well. I show how cubs are easily entertained but adults are much harder. They all seem to enjoy chasing things, but Gabriel is limited in that respect. I can get him to chase me or he sometimes chases other cheetahs along the fence.I build a LARGE cheetah box to see if cheetahs enjoy boxes. Abi and Gabriel had zero interest in it. I try hard to enrich the lives of my captive cheetahs and go all out. The key is finding what stimulates them and positively and safely work around those things.Ultimately, I have to admit it is ME that enriches Gabriel's life the most as he explains over and over after I bring his something to enrich is life, he always turns back to me. Grooming his friend is one of his top pleasurable experiences Gabriel enjoys. He'll roll his eyes back while doing it. So that is what we do most together. To feed these cheetahs by hand makes them trust you more and reduces aggression. The cubs show aggression towards each other but not YOU! That is safer and it helps when giving medicines to make sure they eat it.From wart hog, zebra, antelope, pigeon, to a MOUSE! we give the cubs a variety of foods they might be exposed to in nature if they are to be released in the wild. The hide, bone, tissue, cartilage is all very good for them in their development as they grow. My plans are to have Kimi become a breeder but if she produces cubs for the project, I may release her one day to bare cubs on her own. Kayzer is not my cub so I don't know the planed for him and only time will tell but the owners have the best intentions and will either be a breeder or released for sure. Taking the cubs out into the open game reserve that resides next to the project, is essential training for them.I hope to show some live hunts with the cubs but Abi cannot participate due to her bad hip. He really loves the visits and I show his behavior before, during, and after our encounters. Cheetahs roll around on their backs for various reasons. Gabriel rolls and rubs the ground when I approach him. It is his way of telling me he is very happy to see me. He often rolls around and then looks to see if I am watching. Once that is done, he typically gets up for a physical interactive visit with me.So, I filmed some clips of us during my visits on the ground in mostly selfie view to show what he does. Our encounter and his behaviors are quite predictable and how I can predict what he'll do. It normally begins is affectionate purring and grooming and ends with a cat play fight session. He loves to play fight and practice his predatory skills on my arm and hands. It is actually a bit scary for me as I only get to visit Gabriel twice a year due to a career that supports my project. But, he loves it so much that I accept the risks and allow the play bite sessions. I think in the end, it strengthens our bonds rather than risks it. No on one else in the Universe enriches Gabriel as I can and why we are such good friends. He is alone in that wild camp and cannot have many visits from others as Gabriel has a history of some naughtyness and slapping so off limits except minor encounters. He is very dominant and can express that dominance on people and other cheetahs and why. I love him so take all the risks for him to enrich his life when I can.Thanks for watching! It makes them look like honey badgers that is a survival trait against predation! I talk about the mammary glands and how each nipple has its own gland and when one nipple is empty, the cubs go to the next one. This tree is marked by other male cheetahs that get free time in the common passageway.My post is a an anthropomorphic snide about us, and thought it was cute to be wrong why Gabriel was smiling about a tree It's called the flehmen response, like horses and lions do. Cheetahs have a Jacobson's organ in their upper palate that collects tiny particles that helps identify the smell. The urine on the tree lasts for months and soaks in to the bark and why Gabriel is giving the phlegmon response to the stinks he smells on it. A survival instinct. In the beginning, only one female staff member could baby sit them. After working with Abi to earn her trust, she allows me to visit her cubs.It's important to me for everyone caring for Abi and her cubs to be trusted. Time, love and respect heals. Abi is totally good now with her caregivers coming to visit and care for them. Even volunteers are trusted as I have asked for everyone;'s help in taming the cubs for better care going forward. I intend to place Kimi (the female cub I named her) back into the breeding program and that means I need to friendly with caregivers, whether familiar folks or strangers as I my place her on loan to a qualified breeding project years from now.In this video I talk about why I am taming the cubs and how it benefits their overall care in the future. I also get permission from Abi to hold and experience the cubs which are only 5 days old! It was amazed how developed there were already and how the constantly move and exercise, nurse from mom and sleep to grow. I see a lot of instincts in both mom and the cubs expressing themselves and was simply fascinated. no one taught Abi to call to her cubs or be protective. It is a survival instinct.I show glimpses of the future for these cubs and Abi as I've asked for them to be tamed to allow everyone to care for them, place a harness on them for controlled escorts to a large closed game farm (next to the project) and practice free roaming walks off lead on this veld area with prey animals.Hope you enjoy the pleasure of seeing these cubs and sweet Abi. I had been using it to record Gabriel and Abi and myself.This is at a burn pit. One designed for animal waste, carcasses and human food. In South Africa, these remote Game Range projects don't have municipal public garbage collections so they have these burn pits. Typically one for solid waste, like paper and such and one for animal ones when you have a predator project like this. You can't always burn every day due to weather and bannings, so there tends to be an accumulation at times that attracts millions of flies and other scavengers. You can't always bury it right away as well. The pit needs to fill up as needed so you don't have too many of them. Anyway, that is why these millions of flies are around and so LISTEN! Gabriel demonstrates how important the instinctive drive to reproduce is and how it's important to saving his species. The instinct of hunger is next in line of priorities and THEN friendship.It's funny but interesting how life is. In there somewhere in between is also aggression, which is used to sustain personal survival, such as food aggression, defending territory (for wild cheetahs) and fighting off other predators to include other coalition of cheetahs. Many male and female cheetahs decide to fight for various reasons in captivity, but limited to protect them. Some aggression promotes the breeding response, like coalition of males slapping each other over a female the both like. Fence aggression is a real thing for captive cheetahs and controlled. Males could decide to kill each other if given the chance.But in a captive breeding program like this one, problems are mitigated and controlled. Not so in a wild environment where many a cheetah dies to predation, injury, and sickness. Noit many cheetahs reach adulthood and far less die of old age.Gabriel is so funny ditching me for females and food. But I am so glad he has enough room in his heart and mind to find a friend in me. Abi (her nickname), was one of five cubs born to her mom Abby, who was a super nice friendly loving cheetah mom. Abigale was caught in the birth cannel and an emergency C-Section surgery was required to save the cubs and Abby. All cubs and mom were saved but Abi suffered irreparable damage to her back right hip. When she was old enough, surgery was required to correct it so she could walk and run again. It was a success, but it meant Abi could never be released so she stayed with her sister until last year 2021 when I went through the process of legally adding her to my project with Gabriel.Well, fast forward and when I moved Gabriel to this new project, I brought Abigale with me and she has matured SO much that I cannot believe it. She was in the shadows of her sister and it is natural for a female cheetah to live isolated lives in the wild. Joyce and Abi are doing well. Abi has excelled in the months she has been at the new project. She has become brave, bold, confident and I have worked on both her fear of men and food aggression. She has huge wild camps to live in and share with a surrogate sister named Hunter. The results of her enrichment walks, improved confidence, good wild game nutrition, patience and love, she has shown signs of wanting to breed! I was satisfied with having Sweat Abi as a rescue animal to show the female side of cheetahs, but she wants more out of life! It means we are doing the right things that Abi's mind, body and sole have come to the conclusion that motherhood is a possibility too.I consulted three different wildlife vets for their onion about Abi getting pregnant and any health and safety concerns for Abi's welfare. They all said she could easily bare cubs and would not be a problem and it it was, they could be ready with a C-Section surgery to help. I thought it would be worth the risk and allowed Abi to nurture her drive to breed. What comes next is fully up to Abi.It would be a wonderful contribute to cheetah species and the world if she did. They would not be my cubs to Abi's and the worlds; adding to the endangered numbers of cheetahs in our world. Depending on the number and gender of the cubs, my plan has always been to divide them between breeders back in the program and/or designate for release. We shall wait and see. I wanted him to to natural as possible as a captive breeding cheetah. But, I was charmed by his 'rubbning' behavior, like a house cat. So, I started to re-enforce the behavior to help our bonding and eventual training for future basic health care, like examining his paws. Gabriel would rub between the fence all the time and so I wanted to see if he could be encourage and trained to rub face-to-face. I had some success and here it is! in 4K in most clips.Eventually, I want all my animals to allow basic healthcare examination. It can be done quite easily with some basic operant conditioning, where the animal chooses to do a behavior you want. Some examples of the things I wish to train my animals in my care is to allow me to examine their bodies, to include inside their mouths, between their toes, in their ears, and accept needle injections so I can administer medication, give vaccinations, and draw blood WITHOUT sedation. Sedation drugs are very dangerous and damaging to cheetahs or any animal. Bad reactions can occur and lasting damage to their immune systems and kidneys. I don't like it and will do everything in my power to avoid sedations.Gabriel and I only get about 6 weeks a year to re-acquaint. I don't have the best trust and relationship I need with him to train and get the results I wanted to train him for simple medical examinations. I hope to change that for future cheetahs and animals I have, but it requires me to have my project in order, which I do not... yet. It helps to grant better care for these captive animals when they eat varied wild meats. It also helps identify if they are sick, when they won't eat certain favorite foods. Some cheetahs are extremely finicky and would rather STARVE! than eat some meats. Quite amazing to me.I have fun introducing ostrich to Gabriel. Sometimes a bird comes in on donation that has perished on a farm. May cheetahs will eat ostrich but Gabriel had never experienced it before. I show him a wing with feathers and then buy a local ostrich filet and share it with him DIRECTLY! I cook my ostrich but Gabriel decided he wanted my cooked on and his raw.My cooked ostrich was cooked special without any flavoring in case Gabriel eat mine, which he did! Ambushing is a survival trait for the BIGGER cats like leopards, tigers, jaguars and to some degree lions but not so much for cheetahs. It is because cheetahs are adapted/designed to RUN... and so fast they don't need to ambush and need open area to run 60mph to outrun their prey.I also address folks who think these cheetahs would attack or ambush me turning my back if they were wild. I show a two wild cheetah and how they are nervous and avoid contact rather than engage. Cheetahs are skittish and non aggressive by nature and helps them survive in a wild where the top three predators kill them. Cheetahs cannot fight well due to their design to run. Tall bodies, less muscle, can't grapple well, can't bite hard, less endurance and many other factors. Both the leopards and cheetahs I show here (except the semi-wild cheetah cubs) are tamed and a leopard will pounce on you for play and food. In this case, tamed leopards are all playing when they practice ambushing me.As for these cheetah cubs and leopards, they are not owned by me and had the privilege of encountering and studying them but they all were sent off to other project destinations shortly after this video. Only Gabriel is legally owned by me but I don't "own" him, I am his friend. Flattening lookout mounds and removing killer bees from their water ponds. This and many things are considered to help these cheetahs live in a natural environment as possible for their comfort. Stress, nutrition, clean water, large wild spaces and enrichment are all critical for a happy life for a captive cheetah and to stimulate the breeding instinct. For the 1st time I've known Gabriel, he is calling to a female; asking to mate. He never did that until moving to this new project and location. Things have improved for Gabriel and I could not be happier for him.I have another female cheetah I have not introduced yet but will in the future. She is also going into 'heat' for the 1st time in her life since moving to this project. The new sites, sounds, smells, new cheetahs and stimulation has inspired her to become a mother. She is trying and shows me that things are in place that allows a cheetah to breed. I try and make these cheetahs lives as close to wild as possible yet believe in interaction to relieve stresses. But always allow them to chose to visit or not.Enrichment walks, good wild foods, clean water, exercise, LARGE wild enclosures and lower stress promotes a healthy life which their biological clocks start ticking and they begin to breed. Captive cheetah breeding has been labeled difficult but I've seen quality cared for cheetahs go into heat and want to breed and produce cubs. You also don't get much in AdSense revenue using #Shorts, I noticed.As for the Japanese murder hornets, they do seem to target honey bees and more aggressive. Still, would not suggest people PET any hornets. It is my way but I take calculated risks and accept the consequences of my decisions. It could be these hornets have not gotten the pheromonal signal to defend and attack their hive... the tiny larvae were no where near metamorphizing, so maybe that is why they did not attack me. They may be aggressive when the larvae are about to hatch! My guess. I met James some years back and the one thing I noticed and liked right away is that he is ALWAYS purring. He really loves people and you cannot get close to him and not hear him purring. Cheetahs don't purr all the time but I don't know when James turns his purr off. James purring all the time provided some opportunity to record a male cheetahs purr.James was part of a registered cheetah breeding project but retired now due to his age... He is now 13 as if this posting. That is old for a cheetah who typically never reach that age in the wild. His new camp is in a new project in South Africa and doing very well.A cats purr is an indication of contentment and researchers debate whether the purring is a conscious or unconscious response. Meaning can a cat (or cheetah) willfully start and stop a purring at will. I don't know either but one day I will experiment more to help find out. Finster finished his Sarlac pit and I started feeding him and now he went dormmate over winter after eating all he could. Antlions in larval stage don't have an anus 🤢 which means they can't eliminate any waste and stop eating when they have enough food stored to metamorphize in 6 months. We played ball and I fed him until he stopped eating and now he waits in his home to be transformed. I hope he makes it. I have not seen any movement from him for months now. Once he metamorphizes into a dragonfly looking flying organism, he/she will set off to mate and do it all over again.I compare my different feeding approaches between a sentient mammalian predator like Gabriel The Cheetah, whom I feed pre-prepared meals (not 'live' ones) and Finster, who must be fed 'live' meals to stimulate his feeding response to get him to eat. I don't think it is ethical to feed Gabriel live meals in his current enclosure and will only consider him hunting for his own food if I ever get the chance to train him on an open large 300hector or larger game range. That is fairer for both predator and prey. I won't 'pit' them together.Finster is a different case in that both predator and prey are mostly instinctive and since I am responsible for their lives, I take responsibility for the feeding method I have chosen and must do. I value most all life but realize there are those on this planet where the balance of nature exists because of the relationship of predator and prey. If I hold captive a predator, then I must adhere to the best way of providing for them using my scale of ethics and common sense.Hope you enjoy my goofy approach to science and discovery. I won't always use this approach but enjoy doing it occasionally. Zakira left as a cub with her father as part of a breeders agreement and two years later the plan of bringing her back came to fruition. She can now be trained to hunt like her two twin brothers are doing and one day be released into the wild. RWC wants to breed her and released her into this wild with her cubs. The fundraiser helped finance this mission. So, I looked for connections from the life around the farm where I live and discovered a rare Red Wood Ant colony and a predator that targets them... the Antlion or Doodlebug. The form conical depressions in loose soil or sand that becomes a difficult trap to exit once fallen into it. These antlions then keep tossing sand their way to further entrap them and bring them closer to their massive mandibles for a venomous BITE!I watched these antlions over the summer entrapping and eating various insects. There were over a dozen antlion pit traps near this Red Wood Ant colony. I decided to capture one to learn more about them and keep him/her as a pet! I wanted to observe it throughout its lifecycle and even metamorphize into a flying breeding adult. That has not happened yet as they larval stage is just begun and takes about 5 months.In this video I show the capturing of Finster, his name, and talk a bit about what an antlion is and how it feeds through it's mandible. Finster is a predatory insect in its larval stage, which is when it grows before stopping eating and cocooning itself and metamorphizing into and adult that has 4 wings and FLIES! I hope to capture the moment it emerges as a flying adult before its release to breed. The larval stage injects venom through the tips of its mandible. The poison contains a neurotoxin as well as digestive enzymes that dissolved its prey to be sucked backout... like a spider does. The toxin is QUICK! I have seen insects become paralyzed within 30 seconds. I did NOT getting bit by Finster so was careful, except when I tried picking it up! Almost got me.Crazy me teaches Finster to play baseball with me... That is NEXT time on the Antlion Whisperer! Once Antlions stop eating, and full, they retire to metamorphize and that is what I am waiting on now as Finster sleeps the winter and hibernates.I hope to return to South Africa to continue caring for and planning Gabriel and Abigale's future, the two cheetahs I legally own that I want moved to a new breeding center to continue their purpose of saving cheetahs. We are so excited to share with you the news about Zakira, the 3rd cub Kiki (Yakira) had with her C-section.As you have probably seen just over 2 years ago when they were born we had to give up the female, Zakira, to the owner of the male who fathered the cubs.At that time we had to bring in new genetics but had no surplus funds to purchase another male cheetah. The only other option was acquiring a male on a breeding loan. Sadly the standard agreement with regards to breeding loans in the cheetah industry is a 50/50 split of cubs, and the owner of the loaned cheetah would collect their share of cubs at around 1 week after the birth. It's Gabe's turn to tell his story about how it is recovering from anesthesia and his vet exam. Ketamine and Domitor is a powerful sedative and set of drugs used to tranquilize wild animals. It can cause some hallucinations in certain doses but delivered properly will place the animal in a dream like state. I watch carefully as Gabriel is given the antidote and returns to consciousness.I observe Gabriel most of the day until he recovers fully and made sure he was OK. He also had a stool sample done to look for problems and parasites but results were good. He also had blood work sent off with good results as well. Specifically looking at kidney functions and other blood indicators for any problems.The last scenes are of me feeding him his favorite meal... Zebra. This was about 6 hours from the very start of the dart... I hope to teach my captive breeding animals to allow simple exam and even blood work and taking temperatures. It will help avoid dangerous immune system drugging necessary to perform on a uncooperative wild animal. X-rays may be a different matter but maybe even then, some portable device could be implemented and used on a trained animal. It was an VERY thorough examination and was impressed by Dr. Sandra Bertrams knowledge of cheetahs and direction of the exam. She has a practice in Bloemfontein South Africa and allowed me to film the process from start to finish. Much earned praise from me.Captive cheetahs are under the care of people and is the responsibility of their captors to properly care for them and that includes occasional advanced inspection of their health. Unfortunately, most exams of this nature for a captive wild animal requires sedation via a dart gun that delivers anesthetic and sedatives.I don't prefer this method but the alternative requires a VERY properly trained wild cooperative animal and not all exams can be conducted with a wild animal without sedation, like x-rays. That takes time to teach to allow such an intrusive exam to include x-rays, needles and biological samples such as saliva, feces, blood, hair, shaving, poking, prodding, and forced maneuvering. An awake wild animal would not allow such intimacy and thus the need for sedation. Some procedures can be conducted using operant conditioning animal training, but not all. The drugs used in sedation can cause permanent damage to an animals immune system as well.This is a two part series I am producing and covers the sedation and exam the 1st part and the 'awakening' on the 2nd. My Philosophy Regarding Captive Wild Animals | Primary Purpose To Breed & Release Endangered Species Dolph C. I think there are some good reasons having captive wild animals. The primary one being the breeding and re-introduction of endangered species; something the late English naturalist Gerald Durrell believed and lived by. I share his sentiment but would include captive care for endangered older individuals, non-releasable, rehabilitating ones for re-release, and educational purposes, like at zoos. Ethical sanctuaries have a purpose in housing and caring for the wayward animal whether it be an endangered one or not. I support the concept.It is important that people understand a captive wild animal that is NOT to be released should receive the best life and enrichment possible. I discovered providing direct interaction works the best for me. It is not recommended for everyone. For captive wild animals that are to be released, limited interaction should occur. An endangered species who is breeding in my care needs to trust me so that I can provide it's offspring the best chance for survival and release. A released tamed animal on a protected reserve will produce young that is truly wild when left alone and they can be released into a true wild environment.Zoos have a beneficial purpose to educate people (and breeding if done ethically) but they need to be focused on the animal’s needs rather than visitors. My affinity for life in general was formulated from watching nature shows and visiting zoos as a child.In the distant future, I plan on setting up a cheetah breeding center with the sole purpose of breeding with intent to release. Some individuals will remain captive as part of the breeding program. In this instance, I feel it is my obligation to provide these animals the best stress free quality life possible. For me, that means interactive care which results in better physical and mental health.Taming provides better overall health for an animal rather than one which never receives interaction. Tamed animals are happier and less stressed, which makes them healthier. A simple injury or condition can be discovered & treated or examined by hand versus a ‘wild’ animal with the same injury might fester because you must wait until it becomes critical before administering aid… where sedation is required. A tamed animal that trusts me will allow directed medical aid & if trained, even allow drawling of blood, taking temperatures, dressing wounds and more. You can’t do that with a wild animal that does not trust you.I've seen and compared captive wild animal scenarios of this world... ones where they are exploited, neglected, used, but also protected, loved, and purpose driven with the animals benefit in mind. I've seen the difference enrichment and interaction makes and where the lack of said things leaves animals stressed, sickly, diseased, with behavioral problems which makes them more dangerous. There is no comparison in the quality of life a permanent captive animal receives when interacted with versus one that is not.Cheetahs in captivity often suffer from stress. Positive interaction lowers stress & makes cheetahs better breeders while providing better lives. These captive caracals are highly capable small animal hunters and often catch birds that fly over their enclosures and eat them. Since their release, tour guides are recorded encounters of Stewie and Scratch on game drives of tourists. When I am away for so long between caring for Gabriel, he often forgets that I share food with him and I have to reacquaint and re-educate my intentions with him. I even hold his bone for him so he can eat it better.In between the tensions of feeding time, Gabriel goes back to his adorable, loving, affectionate, playful self. It's a joy to interact, care, play, and feed Gabriel. He is a breeding male cheetah at this project and in Dec 2019 actually mated with another female cheetah! If there are cubs... about 90-98 days gestation period.... I will record the births! What a wonderful legacy Gabriel will pass on if he becomes a father... Well, he got hold of my foam mattress and would not let go. He ended up eating some of it before I was able to remove it from him. I had to use a bucket of water! I was afraid of getting bitten or scratched or I would have just grabbed it, but I knew he would try very hard to keep possession (like I have experienced in other things he's taken from me) so I did not want to cause a fight between us and wait it out. I also did not want pieces ripping from his mouth when I removed it and he swallow it. Well he ended up eating some of it! I was SICK with worry!I hand fed him some LAXPet to help loosen his stool and then spent the next week watching over him every day and night and checking his poo. He seemed OK and all of the foam passed out, but I was very worried.Gabriel allowed me to lay next and cuddle with him while I watched over him. I had to sleep on the hard ground with just a tiny pillow because I could not bring in any blankets or sleeping bag or he'd try eating it. It is the BIG reason nothing is allowed left inside these cheetahs enclosures after you leave from a visit. Anything left behind has to be 'cheetah proof'.I was VERY relieved (so was he ;) when after 7 days monitoring him, he was OK. I checked on his stomach throughout and listen for digestive processes to make sure things were working inside. I was worried about blockage. Basically an internal ecosystem designed to sustain a balance between predator and prey; as natural as possible. The next step is to move the cubs raised inside the controlled area and release them into a open wide reserve when adults.In this video, I really show how far I've reached Gabriel as his best friend. He has an affinity for me that was built from love and respect over time. It's been 6 years. I want to use that friendship and trust to one day have him wear a GPS collar and enter a controlled release game range and hunt together. I need that trust and companionship as a surrogate coalition brother so I can teach him how to safely survive in a wild. But, I will always have my door open to Gabriel to visit me as I plan on living on the game range myself to monitor all of them. I'll certainly visit them on occasion to monitor their health.It certainly is a dream and a BIG one but I am no closer to achieving it. I find myself intervening in the lives of organisms I discover in distress, either in nature (when I sense it is appropriate) or inside my own home. Sometimes I just admire them for awhile and let them go. My compassion for the living is vast and I go out of my way to rescue insects and animals trapped in my house or in nature that by no fault of their own have become incapacitated, sick, or dying due to our man-made industrial world. For instance, a beetle unable to right itself from its back because it fell over on concrete (which isn't natural to them).In this video, I discover a trapped camel or cave cricket in an empty water basin. I don't know how long it was trapped inside, but probably a day or two and knew it would enjoy some water. I describe a little about camel or cave crickets and show how even the smallest of the living takes a break from its instincts of fear and drinks water from my wet finger.I wasn't always this way; compassionate to insects, but always had a fascination about them. I've done my share of crushing insects in my early years but as I matured, my respect for life increased. I will now go out of my way now to help them and other organisms I sense need help.I mention in this video that I see myself as part of this natural world rather than a casual observer of it, and so if my nature directs me to intervene in saving lives, I consider it natural to do so. I have a sense of duty in protecting it... being a steward of life. We humans have dominion over the animals but that does not mean we are to dominate them in my view. Much of the physical characteristics of cheetahs and dogs are similar too, like the sleek body build, high center of gravity, and even the claws that are semi-retractable on cheetahs that always stick out which are typically dull and used for gripping earth when running.Dogs are descendants of wolves which are highly social pack animals with a specific social hierarchy. Cheetahs are considered "semi-social cats" mainly because they form 'coalitions' of male cheetahs in the wild. These male cheetah coalitions are mostly comprised of brothers but can also include non related males. These coalitions typically remain life long and have hierarchies, they establish territory, defend it, hunt on it, find mates and then die on it.When I volunteer weeks in a year (taking care of Gabriel The Cheetah), I had to leave my dog Shasta behind. I compare my reunion interaction with both Gabriel The Cheetah and Shasta The Dog when I came home after stints of absence. Weeks for Shasta and months for Gabriel. Heartwarming reunion. Both remembered distinctly our friendship and relationship.Shasta passed away since this video over a year ago but wanted to post something to remember her by and the best moments of my life so far.I legally own Gabriel and pay for his care at this registered cheetah breeding center in South Africa. Gabriel is there to procreate and help save his endangered species. That is his main purpose of his captive life at the moment. I don't like killing things but I will kill parasites that are a direct threat to me or the ones I care about. Even cheetahs can't outrun ticks. They are present globally across temperate zones of the earth and will not only wait for you but some, like the African Bont tick, will actively seek you out and run you down! Like mosquitoes, they search for CO2 from an animals breath.I demonstrate in this video how having a great bonded connection with wildlife in your care benefits their health. I make basic physical exams every time I visit Gabriel or other animals I happen to come across. Having positive relationships with animals in your care... gives them overall better care. Gabriel is legally mine and I love caring for him at this cheetah breeding project (when I can).I also show how to use a tick extractor I bought at the local pet store. I like the spoon wedged ones that have the notch in them. It removes the head of the tick better than others I have used, unless the tick is deeply embedded, then you run the risk of leaving the head to decay inside the skin and cause an infection.Tick meds work but I prefer not to use them if I can avoid it. I use veterinarian prescribed Comfortis to control and kill ticks for up to one month. These cheetahs don't get fleas but it would kill those too. Comfortis does not kill eggs or larvae but does a good job getting rid of ticks that are attached and ones that will later. The poisons in the meds enter the bloodstream and the ticks feed on the blood and die. I much prefer a natural measure to kill and control ticks and will continue searching. It is the best of worse solutions to give this medicine to Gabriel. Not using the meds means ticks all over him and using it poisons his blood. You don't want the cheetahs on poison meds when breeding, it could result in negative conception, growth, birth, and health of both mom and cubs. So the meds are timed during the summers around breeding plans so not to cause trouble, but that exposes them to ticks. That is why I call it a double edged sword.Some use chickens and ducks to remove ticks and bugs from fields. If careful, controlled fires can help kill tick eggs in the spring, but that solution is not really viable in hot dry South Africa. Poisoning the camps is also a hazard, but you can rotate camps and allow the poisons to take affect and dissipate in the sun over time.Still looking for the perrfect solution to the tick problem, and all parasites. Worms are a concern too and the cheetahs get de-wormed meds as well. There isn't a perfect solution at the moment.Gabriel also gets de-wormed about every 2-3 months with more medication. Again, I don't like it but it is the best of worst solutions. Worms or no worms. I did not show much of my part because it was boring and wanted to give more credit to Papese and Steven; naming and thanking them.I built the two steps from scratch from a scrap yard, drug all that to the working yard, dumped it, pulled out all the nails, screws, chicken wire, measured all support boards, poles, and cut them to size, attached the cut boards to make the steps, reinforcing them with brackets I bought, and marked where the holes were to go into the ground. THEN I asked the paid staff to help dig the holes and put together the parts. I finished boarding up the front and sides so Gabe can't hurt himself, painted it all and then cleaned up, placing all material back where it could be used again.The end where I screamed was me teasing about almost getting sprayed by Gabriel. Cats love to mark something new in their territory as theirs. He was beginning to point my way and why I leaned away. He did not spray me, but yes I was sitting where he pee'd earlier. I've sat in worse.What a pleasure it is to care for Gabriel The Cheetah. Gabriel is legally mine and I look for problems to solve in regards to his health and safety. It really does not feel like work when I do projects and spend time for and with him. Gabriel is a breeding male at a registered cheetah breeding project in South Africa called Cheetah Experience.This a condensed version of the 10 days I worked, all compiled into about 8 minutes. I spent some time recently volunteering at RWCC in South Africa to assist in training the cubs to enrich and train for a future release; among other things. These cubs were born at this breeding project and being 'mother' raised to adulthood before release.RWCC is doing ground breaking work in my opinion and I am learning from them as well as others who wish to help the endangered Cheetah survive. A captive breeding program is one part of the answer and has proven successful. The experience and knowledge shared between conservation groups like RWCC is improving the overall process birth to release. More and more is being learned from dedicated people who have something valuable to share in the fields of science, knowledge, and experience.We take a Skyler and Zahra, Shadow's cubs, on an enrichment walk to hunt some wild hares in a large game range. You can just SEE the enthusiasm of these cheetahs as we transport them from their overnight enclosures to the fields where the wild hares live. Wide eyes and open mouths of anticipation as we travel to the destination.By the time these cubs age to about 2.5 years old, they will be prepared and ready for a release. RWCC has a new project location North West of JoBerg in South Africa with new larger enclosures for their animals and a massive wild animal stocked game range to train, hunt and live on when released. When temps get this high, these predators shut down, look for shade, and rest during the day. They wait until the temps cool before being active; that includes getting water. To help cool down and enrich the animals in my care, I like giving them BloodSicles.Blood is very nutritious and when cheetahs make a kill, they get a LOT of their fluids, protein and other nutrients from the blood of the animals they kill. In a captive environment, collecting blood from their stored food helps simulate the benefit of drinking blood in the wild. Fresh blood is the best but nothing bad about freezing collected blood and giving it to these predators on a hot day.This is a video of the 2nd time I gave Gabriel a BloodSicle and he really enjoyed it. The thicker and more concentrated it is, the more he enjoyed it. I often collect the spilled or dripped blood of his meals in his bowl so he can drink it.I also point out how cats lack the taste bud on the tongues for something sweet. They have all the other tastes to include something on the tips of their tongues to detect water. All are quite tame as they are groomed for the breeding program so when they have cubs, they can be monitored closely. An accepting and approachable mother allows that. There is a plan to release one of these cheetahs into a protected wild in the near future.I was granted special permission to spend my nights with the three because I had watched them grow up and built up a relationship with them during past volunteering.It is natural for a family or friends of animals living together to share warmth. It is a survival behavior that is innate. In our human survival schools, we are taught to huddle together if lost in the wilderness; conserving heat by sharing warmth. They recommend you do it without clothing because fabric acts like an insulator and you don't get the maximum efficiency of heat transfer to your body.I think it is really cool these cheetahs trust and like me enough to share their most vulnerable time at night to snuggle, purr, and share their warmth and sleep with me. It is an extraordinarily rewarding feeling.I don't get much sleep due to the constant getting up, readjusting, and laying back down. Cheetahs are very skittish and wake up at the slightest sound or vibrations, so I don't get much sleep, but I don't do this to get rest but to experience something quite unique and special. I don't sleep with these cats, they sleep with me. They come to me which makes it more special. I drove home one evening and my windshield slammed into the insects like rain. On top of that were 1000s of beady eyed species of frogs on the roads and highways... just waiting for them. I walked back to my bungalow and noticed a flood light on with 1000s of the flying termites landing releasing their wings under the lights.Both Kings and Queen termites take flight to mate and establish new colonies away from the ones where they were born. Waiting for them are 1000s of frogs and other predators and insect eaters.The termites use a "overwhelm with numbers" tactic to survive the onslaught of animals feeding upon them. What is amazing to me is that ALL the termites in an area where the environmental conditions are right (usually after some soaking rains) they release their alates to the wind at night all at once. They take to the wing to establish new colonies after mating. There are so many that it is impossible for those feeding upon them to catch them all... thus securing a chance for a future colony somewhere.This African bull frog was under the lights engorging himself on these termite Kings and Queens as they were focused on their mating game. I arrived late and this frog was already at his buffet stuffing himself. I recorded 10 minutes of it eating and then got bored. These frogs need to feed before burying themselves under the mud to wait for the next rains. Glutting is considered a sin but not for the Africa bullfrog... it is a blessing.This is a young frog as it is about HALF the size of an adult."Watching African bullfrogs engorge themselves, one termite at a time," Dolph C.
