The Crimean War, often called as the Russian War in period, had its fair share of logistical nightmares resulting in hardship, depravation, illness, and death for thousands of British servicemen, particularly in the winter of 1854. Though there were many valiant officers who stayed with the men and endured their deprivations alongside them, a sizeable percentage enjoyed a great many comforts and amenities. Some stayed in winter quarters in Balaclava, some on private yachts, some went to Ottoman lodgings in Varna or Constantinople, and a great many took steamships all the way home to England.
