You've all seen lasers popping balloons and burning things before, so I decided to make something different - lasers that can apply a force. Lasers are just light though and photos of light have no mass, so I had to use a little bit of magic to shoot down cups with a laser beam.

I love riding hoverboards, so I decided to see if we could use the electronics and wheels from one to make a bigger balancing omni-directional vehicle. Other channels have attempted this, but generally they just made the wheels bigger which result in more velocity and less torque than the hoverboard controller is expecting. I solved this by matching the wheel velocity with the correct belt ratio. In Part 2 I'll be putting thrusters on to make to go forward too!

I was recently looking at the new Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom game. It has loads of gadgets which you can use to complete the game including a Cart, Sled, Fan, a Spring, and Shock and Beam Emitters. There’s also a Stabliser device which basically makes things go upright so vehicles can be made more stable, and you ca also use it to make a catapult.
I started to wonder if this would work in real life, and I also remembered that I needed a way to make walking robots more stable, like my tripod robot, so it doesn’t have to be as dynamic and has more time to take steps.
I previously experimented with some small stabilisers which used gyroscopes to make wheeled robots balance, so that seems like a good place to start.
A spinning mass produces something called gyroscopic precession. We’ve all seen spinning tops standing on their end. However, if you start locking any of the axis then they won’t stand up anymore, so we need to be a bit more clever if we want to use a gyroscope to stabilise a robot and have control over it.
If we move one axis of a gyroscopic, then the precession causes a force in a perpendicular axis. This is because the spinning force and the control axis force combine resulting in a force 90 degrees around the gyroscope.

I recently discovered freeline skating or free skating. These are skates which each look a bit like a little skateboard. They have two wheels each but they aren’t attached to your feet like rollerblades or rollerskates, you just stand on them. Free skating is really hard, but I can make it easier with less wheels and jet engines? Caster dynamics are really interesting - the physics involved mean that skates with caster seem to automatically stabilise through a passive-dynamic system which always pushes you upright provided you can keep moving. I 3D printed some pieces and used a CNC to make the main skate platforms.

Day of the Tripods was originally an HG Wells Novel written in around 1897. There have been many adaptations since including a film in 1953 and another remake featuring Tom Cruise in 2005, and many other TV series and other media.
But can Tripods really walk? They only have three legs which means they have to stand on two legs while taking a step with the other leg.
I decided to build a 3D printed tripod robot which can walk along - calculating inverse kinematics and defining the gait.

I was watching a video from YouTuber @Matthiaswandel about an air engine that he built a few years ago. In fact it was a rebuild of an earlier project which he didn’t film, so he made an updated version and made a video about it.
I thought this was really interesting and I wanted to understand how it worked better so I thought I’d build my own version. Matthias sells plans for lots of the things his makes, and he also has software for generating gears, so you should check that out as well as his channel if you don’t already subscribe.
I bought the plans for the air engine which come with lots of photos, plans to cut the parts out of wood, and also a 3D model which is for Sketchup. There wasn’t any indication of how much torque the engine would generate in Matthias’s video and I think I want to make a slightly higher power version, so I’m actually going to redraw all the parts in CAD from scratch.

Can I ride a weird E-Bike with a rear caster wheel? will it just spin out from under me, will it be fine, and will I be able to drift? Did you know that Crash Test Dummies cost over a Million Dollars each? There seem to be only two companies that produce them, and they only make around 300 of them a year.
Most of the dummy is hand-made by people, I guess it’s probably not worth automating too much of the process since it’s quite a low volume production, and that would allow a faster development cycle too.
The dummies are generally designed to not break these days, so they are built much toucher than humans but packed with sensors to measure pressure, torque, acceleration and so on.
I’d really like to do some more dangerous things on YouTube but the videos will probably get demonitised. So I’m going to build a crash test dummy to do them for me instead.
I’m going to build it out of multiple materials, with some sensing, but also with some parts that are designed to be roughly the same strength as a human – it’ll look better on video if it gets smashed up won’t it.

We’ve all seen Doctor Otto Octavius or Doc Ock, in the Spiderman comics and movies. Dock Ock has four tentacles and four of his own limbs, so that makes nine in total, and that’s the same as an octopus.
Lots of cosplayers have made Dock Ock cosplays, including Adam Savage, although mostly those tentacles are in fixed positions or supported with strings. So this time I’m going to try a different approach, using six actuators in each segment of the tentacle.

What about if we could make a bendy tank track that bends to steer? It's a bit like a conveyor belt in a sushi restaurant which bends around corners. These conveyors are commercially available, but normally have fixed curves, so how can we make the tank track bend either way to steer?

Have you seen these drone shows where up to a thousand drones draw pictures in the sky?
The drones used here look like they cost around $2000 each. During one drone show in Australia 50 drones fell from the display into the river. That was only 10 percent of the drones though, putting the total cost of the drones in the display at around $1 million dollars.
These drone displays use a super accurate satellite positioning system called GNSS RTK which stand for Real Time Kinematics. The receivers are available for a few hundred $$.
Then all you need is a radio link to communicate with each drone so you can tell it where to go, and some software to coordinate them.
But what about if I want to fly drones autonomously indoors? There are lots of demos on YouTube of multiple drones flying around performing tasks. These systems tend to use a motion capture system like those manufactured by Vicon which have multiple cameras and IR illuminators, and some software that solves the skeleton for actor based on markers they wear.
A system like this has been used frequently by Stuff Made Here for tracking objects in motion.
These systems tend to cost around $10,000 Dollars upwards though. But what’s a cheaper solution?

This is the next video about coming up with an idea for something I’ll eventually make big enough to ride on. I really want to make a giant rideable land-worm, and last year I made an eight-wheeled snake bike which bends to steer.
That had wheels but I’d really like to build something that can move in an unconventional way or walk on legs.
I’ve been experimenting with wave drives, the first one used a spiral shaped former inside a flexible track, and I tried a cam-shaft driven design a few weeks ago. At the end of that video I mentioned it might be better to turn all the cams around 90 degrees and use them to drive legs in a wave formation.
This leg mechanism is half of the walking mechanism I used in each unit in my omni-directional walking machine, so I decided that perhaps I should just use the whole mechanism and line a bunch of those up to make a centipede.
I got this leg mechanism idea from the DIY walkers YouTube channel which you should check out.
I want to make this machine four or five segments long and drive the whole thing from a single motor, so I’ve designed universal joints to link all of the sections, and a gearing arrangement to drive everything from one overhead drive shaft.

This is version 2 of my omni-directional tank.
The tank is omni-directional. That means it can move forwards, backwards, and left and right, or diagonally, or any combination out of 360 degrees. It can also turn on the spot.
Each track has little wheels mounted in each segment which allows them to slide sideways. This is really similar to other omni-directional robots I’ve built which use various types of omni directional wheels.
This seemed like it worked well, but it was really bad at climbing over things, which is what tanks are generally supposed to be good at. Two tracks at an angle like that just slipped on the edge of most objects and it couldn’t get traction. Also, as the front of the tank was lifted up, the back edge was pivoted off the ground, which didn’t have any drive in that direction anyway.
The main suggestions to improve this from the comments on the original video were to make the track style a trapezoidal shape like a traditional tank, and also to have each section able to pivot so each track can comply with the terrain.
Also at least one person suggested moving the little wheels in each track segment to the outside of the tracks so that they can help grip better on the corners as the track approaches objects.

I previously built an experimental wave drive. I built a tank with two of these drives which worked fairly well. Each of the drives consists of a flexible track to make the wave shape, and inside is a spiral shaped piece of steel which rotates and shapes the flexible track as it does so.
I got this idea from another YouTube video, but this one is a single wave drive with steering wheels at the front.
This mechanism is a bit like a screw tank, but it allows us to manage the sideways friction from the screws because they turn inside the track, rather than having them running directly on the ground.
But what actually makes it go along? It seems clear that there’s a wave moving backwards or forwards and pushing the tank in the opposite direction, but surely each segment of the track is actually stationary and just moving up and down.
I had a lot of problems shaping the spiral parts properly in this version, I could probably have gone about it differently, but a few people in the comments suggested a different approach which was to use a cam shaft to make the wave instead of the spiral parts. If the cam shaft is mounted above the track then it’ll also help with ground clearance which was a problem I had because I needed a pulley to drive the rotary motion.
To start with I’m not going to design the track, so we’ll just push some flat plates up and down and see if that drives it along.

I’ve built quite a lot of remote controls for projects in the past, and this is because I want to have custom controls for whatever I build.
There are mostly quite a few joysticks and buttons on them for various functions of the machine I want to control. It’s been really useful to send a custom data set for all the controls, but I’ve still not found a radio device that’s super reliable.
I started using Bluetooth devices like the HC-05 modules, but I found that these sometimes randomly disconnected. Since then I’ve been using the NRF24L01 modules which is what’s in my openDog remotes. These are ok but range is limited and sometimes they drop data. There is a long range version of these which I used when I worked with Mark Rober on his Autostrike Bowling Ball project. I found that we could get the radio to reach the length of a 60ft bowling alley, but it worked best with one long range version as the receiver, and a standard module for transmitting. That was pretty random though and I ended up swapping a few modules out before it worked.
I also built a WiFi remote with a Raspberry Pi in it to control ROS based robots. That involves either having some sort of WiFi base unit nearby for both the remote and robot to connect to, or making an ad-hoc network between the two. Then we’re also at the mercy of an TCP or UDP connection.
I can’t find any other specific modules that would work reliably with an Arduino so I can build a custom remote or that I can shove arbitrary into. Having a reliable low-latency connection is really important.
But when was the last time you heard that someone crashed their drone because the remote disconnected? Hardly every or never right!? Surely there’s a reliable radio solution here.

I found various robots on YouTube that can go upstairs, of course including Boston Dynamics Spot Mini. My openDog project isn’t really ready for that though, even though it can walk over lumps of wood. I also have these bends in my stairs which means there’s limited turning space in two places, so it’s going to need to be something much smaller.
I came across a few tracked robots and robots with multiple wheels on pivots so they can just drive up stairs. These look good on test steps, but they’d need upscaling significantly to get up actual stairs which tend to be larger and quite steep.
Then I found a stair cleaning robot which splits itself into three vertical sliding sections to lift itself up on each step. The middle section has four wheels to hold it stable, and it also looks like it has omni-wheels so it can slide sideways to clean each step as it goes.
This seems like quite a good design, although the stairs it’s climbing are fairly deep so all three sections can fit on one step. My stairs are a lot shallower than that which means the robot would need to be much thinner, and the middle section would be much less stable when it lifts the back or front up.
So I’m going to adapt this design with an extending section that will allow it to span three steps at once to keep it stable.

I decided it was time to make an automatic robot bin that can come to you when you ask it to! It used both dead reckoning and vision-assisted guidance to make it navigate autonomously. I used an NVIDIA Jetson Nano to do the vision recognition, re-training the deep learning model with transfer learning. I also used Deepgram for speech recognition. There's an Arduino controlling the motors and reading the encoders.

You’ve probably all seen AI generated images by now. There are quite a few videos on how this works, but simply put, an AI is trained on billions of images from the internet, and you can make it draw what you want from a simple text input.
But is this type if image generation of any practical use to us, besides generating art or funny pictures to laugh at?
I’m using Stable Diffusion for this project, which is open source, and you can try it for free – and I’ll put the links in the description. For the actual images in this video I used the dreamstudio.ai website, which is the same algorithm but much faster. You get some free credit, but after that it was about $10 for 1000 image generations.
I’ve been thinking about building something in real life that the AI draws for a little while, and I posted some of the previous results on my Twitter and Instagram. I started with ‘human making machine’ and ‘dog washing machine’, but the first results were too weird, and I don’t own a dog.
I also tried inputting words around practical things that could be useful like ‘Machine that helps humans make food’, and ‘domestic robot’. Most of the machines it drew just look like something from a factory, and the robots all look pretty generic. I guess that’s what all the source images were like it was trained on for those sorts of machines and robots though.
After some more experimentation I found that the phrase ‘experimental robotics equipment’ came up with some absolutely fantastic looking stuff, although it was hard to determine what the machines would actually do if I tried to build one.
So using that phrase combined with other things I got some more interesting looking project ideas.

I’ve built quite a few walking robots in the past. If you head right back to the start of my YouTube channel there are quite a few large robots that could just about hobble along made out of wood and driven by windscreen wiper motors and other parts I could get hold of. I built these early in this century in the room of a house share I use to live in, which is why there’s a bed in the corner of the shot.
I’ve moved on quite a bit since then to some robot dogs that I’ve built recently, but a few years ago I built some bipedal robots like RobotX and my Walking Gonk Droid. These actually had a sense of balance, using an inertial measurement unit to read how far they were leaning over and make the motors respond accordingly to keep them upright. That can be quite tricky though and most of what’s on YouTube is the good cuts of footage where it worked just about ok.
I’ve taken some of these projects to events like Maker Faires, and you’ll always find one person…
So in this video I’m going to build that simple sounding robot which just shifts is mass to one side and moves the other foot to take a step.

Star Wars B2EMO appears to be a practical effect rather than CGI. A real B2EMO was featured at the recent premiers of Star Wars Andor and several influencers have posted footage on social media.
As far as I can tell this was built by the same team that built BB-8 which includes Josh Lee and Matt Denton, and you can see the BB-8 internal animatronics reveal from Star Wars Celebration 2016 in the Star Wars YouTube channel.
At first Star Wars B2EMO doesn’t look like anything special - it’s a beaten-up looking salvage Droid. During the Star Wars Andor premier however, the first thing I noticed was that it had Mecanum wheels, which makes it omni-directional. I’ve done a few projects with standard omni wheels in my channel, but never Mecanum wheels. These wheels have little wheels around their circumference which are angled at 45 degrees. Mirrored pairs are usually installed on the robot, and depending on the combination of rotation on each wheel, the robot can move in any direction.
B2 is even more complicated than that though. Each foot can lift up and down independently, and also the whole wheel-base can extend to make it longer and presumably more stable. There are also a number of other features in the body, which can boost itself up to make the Droid taller. There are rotating parts inside the body, and the head can also move independently in multiple axes. And all of this is a real piece of engineering.

I found video from Akiyuki Brick Channel with a very interesting looking LEGO tentacle assembly. It looks like it has quite a lot of motion, and it only has four motors.
Each motor controls a stage of the machine – driving what is essentially a turntable, but with each motorised part set at 45 degrees.
Based on the combination of each rotary section, the tentacle is able to do some quite interesting motions as it reconfigures itself. There are lots of other really great builds in this channel, so you should check it out.
A similar mechanism has been used in the Rolls-Royce LiftSystem to thrust vector thrust a jet engine, and you can check that article out on Wikipedia.
I’ve built quite a few walking robots, but I really liked the way the tentacle moved, so this made me think about whether I could make robot legs that worked in a similar way, and how easy it would be to control them.

In the last few videos I’ve built quite a few vehicle projects. Most of these were made of steel, plywood and 3D printing, as well as the electronics. I generally recycle most of the parts from my old projects. The motors and electronics can be reused, steel can by cut up and welded together again to make something else, and 3D printed parts get mashed up by Handy Dan’s 3D prints and turned into flower pots.
But what if I could make a project that can be even more easily recycled?
I previously made a cardboard skateboard, which as pretty tough. It was made of five cardboard tubes glued together attached to some 3D printed ends which had normal skateboard wheels attached to. But could I make the wheels of a vehicle out of cardboard too?

I recently built an eight wheeled snake bike, and that was based on a smaller version I built some time ago. And before that I built a worm robot which moves by expanding and contracting. This is known as a system of Peristalsis, which from Wikipedia, is defined as a radially symmetrical contraction and relaxation of muscles that propagates in a wave down a tube.
While I was researching these projects, I came across another experimental robot which uses a wave motion, with the wave running down its body, to propel it forwards. This is a bit like how snakes actually move, Well, the ones without wheels or legs of course.
My original plan for this project was to make a surf board you can ride on the land, but using a mechanical wave like this to propel me along, and use a large set of mountain board wheels for steering. However, I thought I’d try to make a smaller version of this mechanism first so see where the potential problems could be.
It looks like the mechanical wave is formed by a thing that looks a bit like a giant corkscrew, which simply rotates inside a flexible track, so I 3D printed a former which I used to try to bend some wire around. I wanted this to be quite stiff though because in my version it has to support the whole weight of the machine, so I used 4mm diameter stainless steel rod. This was pretty hard to bend into shape by hand, and my resulting screw shape doesn’t quite match the former or the original CAD design, but we’ll see what problems that causes later.

Veritasium made a video about how bicycles balance. He had a special bicycle made so the steering can be locked so it only turns in one direction, or locked so it doesn’t turn at all: youtube.com/watch?v=9cNmUNHSBac
The conclusion of this video is that steering is the most important thing for balancing on a bicycle – essentially you steer to catch yourself as the bike tips in either direction, and bicycles can also steer to stay upright by themselves due to the geometry of the front wheel and steering position which leads in front of the pivot point.
With the steering locked, it’s impossible to balance for any length of time, even if you want to ride in a straight line.
But what about if we make a bike with two wheels that steer?
It seems like it would still steer and balance ok if the wheels rotated in opposite directions so they steer in the same direction, but what about if they rotated in the same direction so you could drift sideways – would you still be able to balance?

It's time to finish the snake robot and see if I can ride it. It has eight wheels and four segments with large servos between them that cause it to flex in both directions. It's modular - each segment is linked together with a serial bus and houses its own power and Arduino.

What about, instead of steering by turning the wheels, we bend the whole vehicle?
I previously made a snake robot which has multiple segments that could bend sideways and up and down. Each segment had powered wheels, and that meant it could bend in all directions to get traction no matter what the terrain was.
I really enjoyed doing that project, so now I’m going to make a much bigger one that I can ride on!

I’ve built quite a few omni-directional robots using various types of omni-directional wheels. Normal omni-wheels are a large wheel with smaller wheels around its circumference, allowing it to be driven in one axis, and slide passively in the other.
Using three omni-wheels allows a vehicle to move in any direction, although I’ve also built machines with one omni wheel.
Most of my omni-wheel vehicles worked ok on flat ground, but they weren’t great at climbing over obstacles. So in this video I’m going to build a omni-directional walking machine which should be better at stepping over things.

Normally drift carts have powered back wheels with less grip than usual so they can slide sideways, but in my case, I’m using an omni-wheel on the back which is like a normal wheel, but has lots of longboard wheels around its circumference.
That means it can be powered to drift the cart sideways, but drive forwards and backwards under power from the front wheels. The back wheel was originally made for the balancing omni-wheeled bicycle project which you can check out in my channel.
The front wheels are 10” hoverboard wheels which have motors built into the hubs, so this makes building front wheel drive with steering a lot easier.
Last time I got most of the chassis together including the steering assembly, and I got the omni-wheel mounted on the back, along with a motor and belt reduction gear box to drive it.
Altogether it looked pretty good, and I think it’s going to drift around just fine – and under power which should make it super controllable.
This time we need to get the steering column built, but before that I need to put the seat on so I can get the handlebars in the right place, and work out what angle I need the steering column to be at.

A drift cart is a powered vehicle which generally has drift wheels on the back which have less grip than normal tyres. This allows the back wheels to drift sideways. There are lots of examples of these sorts of vehicles on YouTube, but driving while drifting under control takes skill.
But what about if we were to make a drift cart where the amount of drift can be precisely controlled.
I previously built a bicycle with an omni-wheel on the front, facing sideways.
This allowed the bike to balance sideways like a Segway or Hoverboard, but still ride like a normal bike.
An omni-wheel has lots of small wheels around the circumference of a big wheel, so it can be driven in one direction and slide passively in the other.

Deepgram has a speech recognition API that lets developers get fast and accurate transcripts for both pre-recorded and live audio.
Deepgram has a whole set of SDKs to make it even easier to get started in your language of choice. Features include profanity filtering, redaction, and individual speaker detection to make your transcripts as useful as possible.
Deepgram can be run locally or using the Deepgram cloud service. I’m going to be using the cloud service with this Raspberry Pi computer to control some hardware. But first I need to build something!

It’s pretty hard to walk on a tightrope but I thought I’d have a go. I set up a bar which is a steel scaffold pole and tried my best to walk along it. Sometimes I could almost make it to the end, but most of the time I did far worse than that. It’s a bit easier if you crouch right down and use your arms to help you balance, but standing up tall makes it even harder. Standing still on the spot for any length of time is practically impossible.
But could I make a device that would help me balance?
I’ve built a couple of projects that used reaction wheels to make a device balance on the spot. This is a wheel which rotates and dynamically accelerates in either direction based on the angle of the device. Force equals mass times acceleration, so we only get a reaction force when the wheel is accelerating or changing direction.
But how big would a reaction wheel need to be to help me balance so I can walk all the way down the beam?

What about, instead of wheels, we make a vehicle which uses balls, and we make it big enough to ride on?
I previously made a smaller ball wheel robot which you can check out in my channel.
A few years ago, Goodyear produced a concept for a tyre, which was a ball. But are ball shaped wheels practical, and can we make a vehicle or robot with ball shapes omni-wheels? I found a video about research carried out at Osaka University, where an omni-ball wheel is made in two halves and seems to work well. But is there more to it?
Last time I made three giant versions of these wheels, and in this video I’m going to assemble the chassis of the vehicle and see if I can ride on it.

In this case though, it’s a ball. The wheel is split into two hemispheres which can rotate freely and independently, this allows the wheel to be driven actively in one axis and passively in the other.
There’s only one small issue though, which is what happens with the active axis is driven so the peak of the hemisphere touches the ground, because the hemisphere can no longer rotate. For that reason, there’s a little wheel in the top of the hemispheres. This does limit ground clearance when the wheel is in this position, but this is no worse than a standard omni wheel with little wheels around its circumference.
The probability of driving on the little wheel for any length of time is also pretty small, so we’ll live with that part of the design for now.

Last time I built a giant omni-wheel. An omni-wheel can move in multiple directions because it has lots of smaller wheels around its circumference, so it can roll like a normal wheel, or slide sideways.
Normally you’d use at least three omni-wheels on a vehicle so that you can move or rotate in any direction. But in this video I’m going to put my giant omni-wheel on the front of a bicycle, and with some clever electronics I’m going to control the wheel so I can ride it.
I’m using the back end of the bike from the Makers Secret Santa Christmas video which Colin Furze left on my driveway. I’ll need to modify the bike so I checked it wasn’t Colin’s bike from his childhood or anything and he said it sounds cool.
As I mentioned last time, the wheel is going to be mounted the wrong way around on the front of the bike so the two wheels make a T-shape. So first of all I need to make some modifications to the front forks of the bike.

Omni-wheels you can buy are normally not that cheap, especially the larger ones. I’ve seen some forklift trucks with mecanum wheels which have slanted wheels around their circumference, but I’m imagining that those are fairly costly. I really want to get hold of a large omni-wheel strong enough for me to ride on, and I’ll talk more about what I’m planning to do with it at the end of the video. So for now, it looks like I have to design and build one.

The Roataped tractors had normal front wheels to steer, but in my case I tried to make the Rotaped tracks into a two-wheel balancing robot. The idea was to make a balancing robot which could climb over obstacles. This worked ok, and it was pretty good at driving over things, but I found that making it balance properly was pretty hard because it wasn’t as free moving as it would have been with normal wheels, and also the sprockets settled into the tracks at certain points which meant that the response wasn’t linear.
So in this video I’m going to rebuild that robot, and try out a few experiments I’ve been meaning to try with balancing robots.

This is part 3 of the one-motor robot arm, which uses three continuously variable transmission clutches to translate the motor drive to three axes.
This isn’t a totally practical way to make a robot arm, but I wanted to see if it could be controlled electronically and if we can run inverse-kinematics on it.
Mostly it’s an experimental project, although it’s a little bit like a Hydraulic system which normally has one engine driving a hydraulic pump, and then multiple valves which switch the fluid to multiple hydraulic cylinders.
In my case though, my valves are actually continuously-variable transmissions which use ball-shaped clutches. As the ball tilts a larger or smaller part of the circumference runs between two wheels, giving either a reduction or enlargement in velocity.
There’s also a dead-spot in the middle so we can stop a specific axis with no friction. I’ve used worm gears to lock the axes in place while the clutch is at its dead-spot so they doesn’t free-wheel.
I’d previously made a two-wheeled differential drive robot using this system which worked well, but I’ve now expanded to three axes. The first one drives the whole robot around on its base which is made from a lazy Susan bearing - the clutch drives a spur gear around the inside of a large ring gear.
Axes two and three drive the shoulder and elbow of the robot. Two drive shafts exit the gearbox at the top, equally spaced from the centre of the robot. I then used a series of bevel gears to make a differential drive system that translates the motion to the shoulder and elbow axis.

Last time I built a device that balances using a reaction wheel. I described how I used a PID controller with an extra observation controller to make it balance, so check out the previous video for more info on that.
A reaction wheel moves a mass in either direction at a varying velocity, in order to balance a device at a set angle which is measured by an inertial measurement unit. The reaction wheel can only exert a force when it accelerates or decelerates, so if we try to balance off centre then the wheel would have to constantly increase in velocity until it reaches its limit, at which point the device can no longer balance.
I built a device with one reaction wheel which balances in only one axis. However, some devices use multiple reaction wheels to balance in multiple axes.
I’ve also built a number of robots that balance using Control Moment Gyroscopes. These are distinctly different because they use a constantly spinning constant velocity mass, which is actively rotated in a control axis. This exerts a force in a perpendicular axis which allows the device to balance. This effect is called gyroscopic precession and I also talked about this in lots of previous videos.
Although a reaction wheel and a gyroscope can both exert a controlled force in a set direction, they do this in quite different ways. However, the reaction wheel spins sometimes so it will also have some gyroscopic precession effect if it is rotated while it is spinning, and this may cause some unwanted effects.
As well as my previous one-wheel gyroscope balancing robot, I also built another balancing robot with one two-axis actively driven omni-wheel which you can check out in my channel. So in this video, I’m going to attempt yet another one wheel balancing robot using at least one reaction wheel.

It’s the next part in the series for openDog Version 3. This whole project is open source, and the CAD and code are already published on Github. All of the mechanical parts are designed to be printed in PLA, and the main motor drives, of which there are twelve, are cycloidal drives which I developed over a few videos last year, each drive has two cycloidal discs and a lot of bearings.
There are three videos in my channel about building the project already which you can check out, but in this video, I’m going to make some minor mechanical changes, and attempt to make it walk more dynamically.
The main mechanical change I’m making is to the lower legs. I talked about the inverse kinematics in part 3 of the series.
This involves being able to position the foot in XYZ cartesian coordinates, and work back the maths to calculate each of the three resulting joint angles per leg to achieve the required foot position. To move the foot on a path we interpolate between the positions from point A to point B which means we basically scroll through all the positions on the way, so the foot moves in a straight line.
At the moment, the dog is walking by moving the feet to fixed positions on hard coded timers. The time it has to take a step gets longer as the step distance increases, but it has no sense of balance.

I’ve built various balancing robots in the past. These include two-wheel balancing robots like my Sonic the Hedgehog robot, and my one-wheel balancing robot which used an active two-axis omni wheel to balance on a single point.
These robots actively move in the direction they are falling in order to catch themselves and balance.
I also experimented with gyroscopes which use a constantly spinning mass and the resulting gyroscopic precession to exert a force and balance.
A physical spinning gyroscope will exert a perpendicular force when it’s tilted in one axis. This means that if we actively drive the gyro in one axis, we can actively control the force in the perpendicular axis. This is called a Control Moment Gyro, and these have been used commercially to stabilise boats.
Using an Inertial Measurement Unit to measure the angle and a PID controller to control the active tilt, allows us to balance a device on a single edge, and I made this work quite successfully with a two-wheel in-line balancing robot, as well as the one-wheel robot which balances like a two-wheel balancing robot in the other axis.
These machines had two gyroscopes spinning in opposite directions, and being actively driven in opposite directions, in order to cancel out any unwanted gyroscopic precession.
The main issue with using gyroscopes is that they can only exert force when they’re being actively driven in their control axis, and so if they reach the end of their physical limit then the device can no longer balance.
When I built my BB-8 robots I made them be able to rotate on the spot. This was achieved by using a reaction wheel. This is a large mass that spins in either direction at a varying velocity but can also stay stationary when it isn’t required to exert any force.
I’ve seen various other balancing devices on YouTube that use reaction wheels to balance, but I’ve never tried to make one. So, in this video I’m going to do just that, starting with a simple test rig.

I’ve previously built various omnidirectional vehicles. Those included a machine I built to promote a LEGO set, which used three standard omni-directional wheels. We’ll talk more about the maths involved in calculating the wheel velocities later in this video, but using a combination of wheel velocities the machine was able to move in any direction as well as rotate.
I built another similar machine, but this one used ball shaped wheels which were inspired by a project at Osaka University. Each wheel is made up of two hemispheres and each wheel has one driven axis, just like standard omni-wheels. This allowed it to move in any direction or rotate.
Neither of these vehicles where particularly good at climbing over objects though. I built various other projects which were much better at climbing over obstacles. In some cases these used rubber tank tracks, or other weird wheels like the Pedrail machine which had extending feet around its wheels’ circumferences. Or just a lot of wheels like my actively flexible snake robot which could flex in two axes to get traction and also bridge gaps.
But what about if we had a tracked vehicle that was also omni-directional? In this video I’m going to attempt to make tank tracks which can also slide sideways, so we can make a vehicle with three of them arranged just like omni-wheels.

Last time I tried to make a robot which balanced on one actively-driven two-axis omni-wheel. This wheel is driven by two motors in a differential drive configuration so it can drive sideways as well as forwards and backwards like a normal wheel.
The design was mostly taken from a Honda Patent and Honda had showcased a proof-of-concept machine called the U3-X. The original design showed all the wheels around the circumference being driven together by a flexible shaft, but this is very hard to reproduce, so in my version I just attached all of the wheels to a central hub.
Those wheels are driven by two hubs with rollers mounted on them at 45 degrees. This causes the wheels to rotate as the hubs are turned in opposite directions on either side. It worked well during low-speed testing, but I couldn’t get enough traction while accelerating fast to make the device balance. This was largely down to slippage between the rollers on the hubs and the wheels around the circumference. There’s also quite a lot of friction between all of the rollers and wheels, so it’s probably not very efficient.
I’d also looked at another wheel design called OmBURo. This robot uses helical gears to translate the motion to drive the wheels around the circumference with a motor mounted in line with the main wheel axis. This design uses shorter flexible shafts so that each helical gear drives three wheels, although I guess more helical gears could be added, so there’s one for each small wheel.
This time I decided to make something totally different, using a twisted belt to translate the motion from a central hub to the small wheels around the circumference.

Last time, I started a project to build a robot arm which only has one main drive motor, and uses a series of clutches to drive three separate axees.
I’d built something like this before which controlled a differential-drive robot on two wheels. In that project I built two continuously-variable transmissions using a ball which rotates and binds on two wheels. One wheel is driven by the motor, and the other is the output wheel which touches the ground.
As the ball rotates a different length circumference of the ball runs on each wheel which gives us either a reduction or enlargement in velocity. If the ball is rotated in the other direction, we can go into reverse, and there’s a hole in the ball on its very end - so there’s a dead-spot which means we can stop the output. This did however mean that the output wheel could free-wheel in this position.
This time I’m driving worm gears with the output of the secondary wheel so that the axees can be locked in place when they aren’t being driven. I now have three outputs to drive three axees of the robot arm. One of these drives the main waist rotation which is made from a Lazy Susan bearing – and this makes the whole thing rotate in place including the motor.
At the end of the last video, we left the other two worm gears driving nothing, so today we’re going to build most of the rest of the arm mechanics driven by these two outputs.

I recently watched a video from Veritasium about how bicycles stay upright. A special bike was made for this video which allowed the handlebars to be limited in motion.
As well as preventing the handlebars from being turned in one direction, the handlebars could also locked entirely, so the rider could only go straight, but the bike was impossible to balance on in this case, even when just trying to go in a straight line.
Since watching that video I’ve been thinking about other ways to make a bicycle steer. There’s not really any need to make the design of the bicycle any more complicated, but I’ll discuss some ideas for further development of the idea at the end.
For now, I’m going to make a balancing bike robot which uses a wheel mounted perpendicular to the main drive wheel so it can drive sideways to steer.
