This is how I play 'Happy Again' by Chet Atkins - one of his classics. As you can see there's a capo on the 2nd fret to bring the song up to B, but of course you could choose to play it in A if you like that sound better.

Many thanks to Greg B, one of my Skype students who commissioned me to transcribe this chord-melody jazz arrangement of Danny Boy from another YT video he sent me. I made a few small changes to the arrangement and decided to play it on an acoustic guitar, rather than on a jazz box, but other than that it's pretty much a note for note transcription.

Here's a great melodic solo guitar progression that I worked out from watching Mateus Asato play this in an interview on YT. I added some transition and ending chords, as well as some added embellishments to the melody with extra articulations when played the second time around.
I prefer to play this style of guitar with the pick and fingers in a hybrid style, as opposed to tucking the pick away and bringing it back out when needed, in the manner that Mateus does. It's also important to add some reverb to your sound to get a tone similar to Mateus, I use a Fender 'tre-verb' to do this, but any decent reverb pedal or amp should work.

Here are the various guitar parts to the Cream song 'Crossroads', as played and modified by John Mayer. I tried to make the tab as accurate as possible, but be sure to study the video and copy the fingerings, articulation etc. There is some left and right hand tapping in this tune, i.e. hammering on or striking down on the note(s), using only one hand. I have tried to indicate this in the tab with the 'T' symbol, the T with the circle around it indicates hammering on with the left hand and the T with no circle indicates striking down on the notes with the right hand, also the little squiggles above certain notes indicate vibrato. It's important to pay attention to the bend values as well. Some of the bends, i.e the 1/4 note ones, don't bend the note up to the next note, but simply bend it out of tune a little, which at tempo, does sound right! If you're having trouble seeing what's going on, I have included a part at the end of the video, where I play the Verse and Solo slowly, and if you need it even slower, you can always adjust the playback speed in the player settings.
Best of luck with this tune everyone, there'll be lots more videos like this coming in 2021 :)

Here's how I play the thumb picker's anthem; Cannonball Rag. I worked this song out many years ago, but recently I saw Tommy Emmanuel play a version for Guitar Centre which had a few runs, fills and embellishments that I decided to pinch and add to this version. As with all these tunes, I'd recommend learning it slowly, but once you've got all the positions memorised, a good tempo to build it up to, would be around say, 190-220 bpm. Having said that, this tempo is still a fair bit slower than the lightning speed Tommy plays it at!
Be sure to try and copy the chord shapes I'm fretting, as well as following the tabs, because some of the notes that the thumb pick catches on the down sweep, are not tabbed out, as it would make the tab quite confusing to follow. If you're having trouble catching all the notes for the fast runs, you can always slow the speed of the video down in the Youtube player settings (it's the little wheel icon you need to click on, then adjust playback speed).

Here's another fantastic Ted Greene arrangement of a classic 1960's song recorded by Dusty Springfield and composed by Barry Mann. As with all of Ted's arrangements, there's a lot of harmony in each chord and even sometimes, connecting the changes. It's a beautiful arrangement that uses pretty much the whole span of the guitar and builds in harmonic complexity throughout the tune. This version can be played on a jazz guitar, (you can search for Ted's version on Youtube to see him playing it on a jazz box), or even a steel string acoustic, but for some reason, I really liked the sound on a nylon string classical guitar. I had to re-arrange it slightly, to incorporate more open strings and more economical chord shapes in order for the tune to work on a guitar like this one, but even with the modifications, I'd still recommend setting your guitar up with a nice low action and using some medium tension strings, (if you're using a nylon string guitar that is). As always, have fun with it and best of luck :)

I saw the amazing Joe Robinson play this progression in an interview and decided to work it out and add few parts here and there including a short intro as well as slowing it down to make it a bit more digestible. Joe played it as a fingerstyle piece using a thumb pick, but I have adapted it slightly to make it work as a chord melody progression, using a flat pick. One thing to be aware of about the tab is that when a x is displayed on the string either above or below a fretted note(s), it simply means to play the notes with a slight attack to create a fret slap effect. For some reason I wasn't able to add the x to the correct strings in Guitar Pro, so this is the only way I could write it out. This is a fun one to play once you get it under your fingers anyway so best of luck with it :)

Here's another great Ted Greene arrangement of an old jazz standard that I enjoy playing very much. Composed by George Gershwin in 1937, this song and particularly this arrangement makes really good use of harmony like all of Ted's work! I really like arrangements like this that ascend and descend up and down the guitar neck as there's something quite satisfying about making full use of the fretboard in a linear fashion and moving harmonically through the changes at the same time. I hope many of you can appreciate that after learning this tune, so have fun with it :)
I'm aware that these arrangements of jazz standards are a little less popular with some of my subscribers, so if you're a subscriber that is more into my other videos, don't worry I will be uploading lots more acoustic and electric blues stuff very soon!

This is a great hybrid picking blues progression in E that I worked out from Tommy Emmanuel's Up Close DVD. I play it quite slow here, so you can see what's going on but a nice tempo for this song would be around 90-100 bpm, although I recommend learning the piece slow. For the lead part it's important to keep the bass pumping and palm mute the bass strings too.

All these Jerry Reed songs are so good for warming up your hands and developing technique and fluidity, especially when played with a metronome set to a nice slow tempo, at around say, 120/130bpm or even lower! Here's a great blues progression I adapted from watching John Mayer play a finger picking rendition of his blues song 'I'm Gonna Find Another You', from his Continuum album. I saw him play this progression on Periscope a few years ago and made some alterations throughout, including cleaning certain parts up, slowing the tempo down and developing a cleaner way to play it with a flat pick in a kind of Jimi Hendrix lead/rhythm style. Some of the bends are difficult to tab out as they sustain and pull off at specific times, so just try to study what I'm playing, and use the tab as more of a guide if you're having trouble. Best of luck with it :)

This is how I play Merle Travis' great fingerpicking tune 'Walkin' the Strings', from Merle's seminal album of the same name. It's a fantastic song to learn and add to your warm up routine, as it uses the whole guitar neck and enables you to develop right hand technique due to the fast paced picking patterns.
The key to playing this style authentically is to fret all the notes in each chord, that way when the thumb pick plays each bass note (that are all tabbed out), another bass note will sound as the thumb pick sweeps across the strings. As opposed to Chet Atkins' very articulated and neat sounding thumb picking technique, Merle Travis' style was far more liberal with the thumb pick, with it often contacting more 2 or 3 strings in one pick.
As always, please subscribe for lots more watch and learn guitar lessons and good luck :)

Here's a great Travis Picking song by Jerry Reed that I worked out a few years ago by watching players like Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins and Richard Smith. The original version of this tune was played on two guitars by Chet and Jerry, but Richard Smith found a great way to combine both parts into a single arrangement including all the harmonies!
Apart from sounding great, this song is a great exercise for developing fingerpicking technique as it utilises a lot of the guitar neck and has many different positions to move in and out of. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments section, and good luck learning it :) Also my cat Wolf decided to come in through the cat flap and make a brief appearance at the end of this video so I decided to keep it in :p

Here's a really fun to play arrangement of a popular jazz standard, 'Take Five'. Written by Paul Desmond and made popular by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, this song is perhaps one of the most well-known jazz standards of all time, due to it being used many movies, tv shows and commercials.
This arrangement is essentially like the Chet Atkins version from his 'Alone' album, but several parts have been slightly re-arranged by, (as far as I know), a great guitarist called Rick Allred. I saw him playing this version in an old CAAS video, and loved it so I decided to work it out. It can be quite tricky to play this song cleanly, so if you're having trouble, just take it slow and have fun :)

Here's a chord-melody arrangement of a 1940's jazz standard - My One and Only Love. This song has been recorded by many artists over the years and I've heard many versions, but I believe I adapted this particular arrangement from a book of standards, quite a few years ago. This version is very true to the original melody and chord progression, which I think is quite important for a chord-melody arrangement, and being in the key of C allows many open strings to be used throughout.

Here's a really nice jazz blues progression for the acoustic guitar, played with hybrid picking in chord-melody style. I worked this out from an amazing guitarist named Rory Hoffman who is actually one of my favourite jazz guitarists I've found here on YouTube. I immediately fell in love with his playing and this tune, so I just had to learn it, and hopefully now with this video so can everyone else!
To be completely honest, this tunes is quite difficult to play fluidly, i.e. having all the notes ringing in to one another. It will very likely have several new moves that you may not be familiar with, but with dedication it's totally possible to learn and play well. If you're having trouble I'd recommend just taking it bar by bar, without moving on until you've completely comfortable with the previous bars. If you like a challenge then why not give it a go! Good luck :)

This thumb picking arrangement is basically a combination of a few different versions of this song I've seen played by Chet Atkins, with a few of my own ideas thrown in. I believe Chet originally played it on a Gretsch electric guitar, but I chose to play it on my new nylon string acoustic, however it sounds just as good on a steel string guitar too.

This first video is a great, self-accompanied blues solo I saw played by an amazing young guitarist named Sol Philcox, who was playing in the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan. I worked this out a long time ago but I remember thinking that even with the tab, a lot of guitarists would find it tricky to catch all the licks, which is why I play a slowed down version in this video as well. Due to the popularity of my video 'Jazz blues Comping Chords' I thought I would make another video on the same topic, where I slow down another series of jazz blues chords. This time I thought it would be a good idea to show a few different styles of left and right hand technique you can use to get some different sounds.
I tried to keep this video even more succinct, but for all the people asking about the theory behind these chords, I do plan on making some theory videos on that specific topic in the near future! In a nutshell however, it's important to note that the form of this blues, as with any other is essentially a I, IV, V progression. I use many chord substitutions, extensions, and even some 'chord leading' to create more complex and interesting harmonic content.

Here's my version of Waltzing Matilda, arranged by Tommy Emmanuel. I chose not to make many alterations to this brilliant arrangement as I think this particular version really doesn't need it. Having said that, feel free to adapt it after you learn it if need be. This tune might actually be quite challenging to learn if you're new to this style of playing as it's quite long and has some fairly advanced moves. If you feel your hands hurting and you're having difficulty learning this one, I would recommend starting on one of my many other slightly simpler tunes. Either that or just become very determined and practice obsessively!
In this video I demo, break down and teach a great blues shuffle I got from watching the brilliant Kirk Fletcher. This progression might take a little practice to play fluidly and with the right feel, but once you get it, it's really fun to play and is a great exercise for right hand rhythm technique! I did my best to write the tab out in a way that accurately shows how the rhythm/strumming works, i.e. which strums should be downstrokes and which should be upstrokes, but if you till find something confusing then feel free to ask me anything in the comments.

Here's a great fingerpicking tune by Jerry Reed, (recorded by Chet Atkins) that's perfect for people who are just starting out playing fingerstyle guitar! I borrowed a few ideas from various versions I've seen played, but overall this version is pretty similar to Chet's original recording.
Here's a short Merle Travis tune called 'Fuller Blues'. Merle's style was never as articulated as Chet Atkins' style of playing so don't be afraid to play this song with a heavy thumb, strumming across two or even 3 stings at a time in order to get that stride piano effect on the guitar!
Happy picking :p

This is how I play Dixie McGuire by Tommy Emmanuel. This is a great song for developing strength in the left hand without having to make too many uncomfortable stretches! It does take a bit of getting used to, but it's a fun one to play once you have it all worked out. If you're interested in inspiration for learning this song, take a look at my favourite version of Dixie McGuire where Tommy manages to work in some incredible improvisation as well as a key change! He also talks a bit about the history of the song, which is quite interesting:
In this lesson I show you how to play my version of a Stevie Ray Vaughan style blues shuffle in E. It's one of those grooves that can take a bit of getting used to in order to play it with the right feeling, but once you do get it, you wonder why it took you so long to learn it as it's really only 3 chords and a few notes! The tab I've written out is meant as a guide, (as all tab is, in a sense), so try to follow what I'm playing to get a more accurate understanding of the right groove and feel. Also I intended for this lesson to be much shorter than it turned out, but ended up realising that it's important to go into detail about how to properly mute unwanted strings etc, so I hope it's not too lengthy for you.
